John Lithgow is a genius! I purchased this book along with his other children books and activity items, as well as his CDs. I love them all - great songs, educational for children to learn about instruments, love and lots and lots of fun to dance to!! I highly recommend his books and stuff.

Lithgow has done it again with another great book to keep you kids both entertained and creative. His rainy day tips range from origami folding to mud painting to "po-art-ry," and there are so many that even the most obstinately bored child will find something to stimulate her mind. The book comes with a kit that contains all the hard-to-find items required for the projects, so parents won't have to drive around and hunt them down. I would recommend this to any parent with kids who love to have fun.

Like visiting a world class Museum exhibit on the brain.

When I picked up this book I was floored as to the detail and the depth with which this book covers the subject. I felt like I had just entered the exhibit room of a world class museum. The book takes you on a tour of the brain the way a museum exhibit would. It has all the best features, including: being interactive; covering the history and developement of the field; and being up to date and accurate. The book is as much fun for the brain expert as well as the brain neophyte. It may be too detailed for children under 12 but with an adult helping I think children down to 7 or 8 can get alot out of this volume.

Great tool for psychology students

Brainpack, while not incredibly detailed, is a wonderful introduction to the structure and function of the brain and an enhancer of text material. Provides a great overview, is accurate, visually appealing and offers lots of fun with the activities. Students love it.

Broadband Entertainment is an excellent book. It gives a thorough explanation of both the trends in home entertainment and the digital technology that is making them possible. It is written in a very interesting style and covers material ranging from the generations of entertainment and distribution technology to the politics of broadband access and digital rights management. There are also a lot of interesting tidbits about some of the technical details, such as audio and video coding, capacity of storage technologies, etc. This book is worth the price for its large, informative, full-color illustrations alone.

Excellent reference, very timely and packed with information

I found this book to be extremely packed with many of the details that flood the digital entertainment and gaming world. It is a very useful reference as well as an extremely easy read that itself entertained me while providing clarification on many aspects of the confusing technology in the broadband world. This book can save you literally hundreds of hours that you would spend trying to find this kind of information online and in reference books. It ties all of this together into a comprehensive whole that is very accurate and on the mark.

This is a great purchase for those who really need a foundation in the world of broadcast design. I have purchased other material from rich and glen before and they have really helped me out in alot of directions so once again my hat goes off to them. You get so much more for the price they charge and this book needs to be on your shelf. Great tips and insights!!!!!!!

Great Nuggets!

The latest On The Spot book from CMP Books titled Broadcast Graphics, their very informative and short book of the hottest tips, was very informative with great nuggets of useful information. Not too much in any one gulp yet still gives you the "aha" factor. This book focuses mostly on Photoshop and After Effects in the broadcast arena (hence the title) and they even say this book is for those in television. However, the book also delves into keying, Illustrator, and script automation - so there's a little something for everyone. Let's face it, as a filmmaker you need to have a solid understanding of just about every facet of production and post-production and this book, with it's quick tips, can be helpful in a pinch. It's another arsenal in your toolbox. I only wish they had a quick index listing their tricks so when I'm really in a pinch I don't have to search thru the book trying to remember what chapter I saw the helpful hint. All in all, a great productivity time saver and quick read.

Outstanding Collection of Multimedia Learning Research
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-13
This is the single best collection of articles from today's leading researchers in multimedia learning available to date. The book provides an excellent sampling of research associated with how people learn through the combination of words (text and/or audio) and images (still illustrations or photos, animations, and/or video) available. Anyone working in multimedia learning will benefit from gaining a firm understanding of the principles presented throughout this book.

The book is divided into five parts:

Theoretical Foundations: Foundational learning theories, including cognitive load and how multi-modal message delivery (text/audio and graphics) support learning.

Basic Principles of Multimedia Learning: Research supporting key principles in the development of multimedia instruction and achieving multimedia learning, including split-attention principle, modality principle, redundancy, segmentation, coherence, signaling, spatial & temporal contiguity, and personalization.

Advanced Principles of Multimedia Learning: Research on the incorporation of multimedia products into a learning approach, including guided discovery, worked-out examples, collaboration, self-explanation, navigation, and prior knowledge.

Multimedia in Content Areas: Articles containing guidance for developing multimedia learning environments in various content areas, including reading, history, mathematics, chemistry, meteorology, physical systems, second language acquisition, and cognitive skills.

Multimedia Learning in Advanced Computer-Based Contexts: Focuses on multimedia in emerging technologies, including pedagogical agents; virtual reality; games, simulations, & microworlds; hypermedia; and e-courses.

I gave this book to my 2 1/2-year-old granddaughter for Christmas and it was an immediate hit. She asked to have it read to her right away and had great fun listening to the rhyme on each page and finding the answer to the rhyme in the artwork. The mix of paintings gives her lots of new images to look at and think about, very different from most of the pictures in her other books. The masterpieces pictured are definitely mind expanding while the rhymes are fun and their focus fun to find in the pictures.

A Graphic Titanic Story!

Review Date: 2008-02-15
This is part of Capstone's Graphic Library. I use these books to teach my ESOL students to read English and American History. The Titanic story may not be an essential turning point in American History but students find it a very exciting story. I do too! It brings history to life for these kids and much better than the old black and white graphic novels that teachers had to deal with. Very nice!

I first read this book when I was in the seventh grade in Sunday school class. I now use it in teaching my own students about the Spanish Inquisition. When the students rate what they liked best about the school year, Kenneth Roseman's choose-your-own adventure series always gets the highest ranking from the kids. I still remember my fall from grace as the advisor to the king of Spain 15 years ago!

A "choose-you-own-ending" book on the Spanish Inquision!
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 1998-12-07
The setting is Madrid, Spain in 1492. The Spanish Inquisition is demanding that Jews convert to Catholicism or leave the country. Based on the decisions that the reader makes, the protagonist might end up a wealthy merchant in the Ottoman empire, as a "Secret Jew" worshipping covertly in Spain, or even as a high ranking Inquisitor! Of course, many of the choices lead to the death of the protagonist.

Because the story-lines are relatively brief, after reaching the outcome of a series of decisions, readers will often return to a prior decision and follow the alternate path the story might have taken. In the course of a half-hour to an hour, a reader will have had the opportunity to explore many different places and situations. It is generally impossible to guess which decisions will turn out to be the more prudent, emphasizing how surviving the Inquisition was as much a matter of luck as of wit or skill.

By placing the reader directly into a fictionalized story, history is brought to life in a very personal and meaningful way. By forcing the reader to make the kinds of ethical decisions that Jews would really have faced during this period, the book tackles not only the history, but also such deeper issues as conversion, martyrdom, and personal responsibility. The Cardinal's Snuffbox is fun to read.

One of the best books on animation I've ever read!
Helpful Votes: 21 out of 21 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-06
I've bought a lot of books on 3D animation over the years and most of them are either full of information that I don't need (how to build sky scrapers or how to spin my name in letters) or don't have anywhere near enough information on how to animate (usually only one chapter).
This book has everything I need to learn how to animate!
It starts by showing how to do an exercise using 2D traditional skills and then goes on to do the same exercise in 3D (if you want to skip the 2D bit and just do the 3D, that seems to work fine). Most employers today want to see evidence of traditional animation training and this book gives you all that!
It covers everything; weight and balance, timing, walks, birds, fish, snakes, four legged animals, acting and lip-synch.
I'd rate this book with Richard Williams' The Animator's Survival kit. In other words one of those books that every animator should have.

So if you want to learn how to animate or if you want to improve your 3D skills, buy this book!

I have read all of the give yourself Goosebumps and I find this one to be the most entertaining(even if its not that Frightening it is still a worth while read). In the book you are trapped in a hotel full of ghosts and you must then find your way out alive.
I think R.L. Stine has written a inovative series but sometimes the story and the scares get lost in the mad confusion of the constant choices. That is not the case in this book. So if you like the series or are curious about reading one of them, I highly recomend this book.

GREAT! =)
