It is not meant to be a teach-it-all book. The best thing about this book is that it summarises the work of 20 of the best
Adobe Illustrators out there. Each illustrator has his/her own unique creativity style, which is highly inspirational! It
also provides a list of these illustrators' personal websites, which the reader can check out for more sample work. Some of
these websites also offer links to other illustrators not featured in this book. Their work is equally impressive.

When buying this book, I was not looking for a "teach me how" Illustrator book. There are many of those that you can purchase.
The main goal when purchasing this book was to familiarize myself with the top Illustrator experts out there. Although,
it's not the typical huge books you are accustomed to as a designer, it's worth buying IF you want to see the artistic creations
from some of the best Adobe Illustrator Experts out there. Some experts show you how they designed their popular designs
and advertisements. Check it out!

Everything you need to see about the design proposals for the WTC site. It provides the visual aspect, that combined with
"Up from Zero: Politics, Architecture, and the Rebuilding of New York" (ISBN: 1400060176), presents a comprehensive picture
of who, what and when. Hundreds of illustrations showing also tech. details are beautifully printed in color on glossy paper
on a very high level. They reveal brutally the shortcomings of proposals including the winning one and its evolution from
the unrealistic wish that could not have been built at a reasonable cost (incl. the grim pit and gigantic free standing, enormously
expensive spire for... coffee drinkers and directly in front of office tower windows) to its more feasible shape and surrounding
changed (by others) so much that the overall plan stops resembling the winning proposal, as if the award was only a pretext
to install the predetermined winner, and to have the actual planning done by others.

The architectural designs for the Ground Zero space were imaginative and inspiring. This book treats the various solutions
comprehensively and respectfully. The solutions fell into 3 catagories, a memorial for the greatest American tragedy since
Pearl Harbor, a huge transportation hub, and the rebuilding of office, retail and residential space. This book displays unofficial
and unrequested designs to each or all solutions. A favorite was Hani Rashid and Lisa Anne Couture's skyscraper which reminds
one of interlocking links of chain, and therefore conveys a feeling of security. The memorial should be at or near street
level to maximize public viewing, so the ones that were many feet underground were not appealing.

Enhanced with an informative Foreword by architectural expert and author Victor Papanek (who once worked with Frank Lloyd
Wright), In Search Of Natural Architecture by London-based architect David Pearson is a world wide survey of buildings that
embody the new ideas about the impact of architecture upon the ecological environment, as well as human health and spiritual
well-being. Ingenious technological solutions to architectural problems ranging from the use of solar panels to sculptured
designs are showcased with 300 illustrations -- 200 of which are in full color. In Search Of Natural Architecture is a seminal
and enthusiastically recommended work, especially for its architecturally visionary ideas, imageries, and insights.

This is a wonderful, landmark book. Ypma successfully reinterprets traditional Indian design for modern contemporary living.
The book provides knowledgeable updates on various Indian craft traditions (sectioned cleanly into distinct chapters)and
traces the historical roots from which these traditions have evolved. Perfectly straddles the ancient and the contemporary
without stereotyping India. The pictures are great but what really sets this book apart is the accompanying text which is
nothing short of illuminating. A great introduction for those interested in Indian design as it is practiced today.

I wish it was available in a larger format, as the limited space does just so much justice to the vibrant colors, moods, and

This is not the Fluff and Baby Powder of other Industrial Design books. It actually explains how things get made. Strongly
recommended reading for Designers, so you have some notion of what goes on inside the factory. It isn't an engineering text,
but it give designers some strong insight into their world.

As an industrial designer, I highly recommend this book, not only because it gives a broad look at history of Industrial
Design, but also because it uses very sophisticated and rich in expression language. I have read this book in French, but
the English version is equally well written and is one of the few excellent sources of research information about ID available
nowadays.

Practical models for Corporate Environmental Strategies

Review Date: 2006-11-20
I bought this book while writing my under-graduation final project in "Corporate Environmental Strategies", which was later
published in a Brazilian magazine called Industrial Ecology. The book changed the way I see environmentalism in a very important
way: it made me stop discussing about the real state of the world and start worrying about improving it (in those times I
had read 'The skeptical Environmentalist' by Bjorn Lomborg and 'The Ultimate Resource 2' by Julian Simon, which are great
books in my opinion). I started to understand that the most important is not to define where we stand, but to make the world
a better place.
Graedel and Allenby propose practical and detailed strategies in order to 'green' the production process. They start the book with a really unbiased discussion about environmentalism and slowly provide the context for the introduction of environmental processes into the industrial world (full table of contents below). The text is written in a very clear and didactic way, and the technical terms are explained from A-Z.
I strongly recommend this book for engineers, environmentalists, managers, biologists, and people who want to improve the world's environment.

artists or graphic designers who create designs to communicate ideas to people should like this book.
The summary on the preface accurately describes this book and I'll quote it here.
This book:
- Leads you through the mindset and kind of thinking that support good information design.
- Gives you an overview of the type of processes and tools you can use to create effective information design.
- Shows real-world examples of successful products
- Presents interviews with some of the premier practitioners working in the field today.
This book talks about high level concepts to give an overview to information design. The first four chapters explains the need for effective design and provides lots of examples where they are used, and how helpful they are. Some examples include direct mail, litigation graphics, etc. Interviewees relates on what works and what doesn't through their own experience.
There are several tools include to help designers. They include personas and scenario simulation, research and testing and even mundane stuff like using plain language. Of course not all might relate to everyone. I'm a newspaper artist and I don't do testing for every graphic that I produce. But they do give results for tests conducted, which can be applied to different fields.
One chapter is devoted to design principles with examples from all medium.
The last five chapters are the case studies. Each touches on a different medium and each comes with 6 real life success stories. That's 30 set of experience from the industry you can learn from.
I'll like to conclude that this book practices what it preaches. The information on the pages is laid out nicely and easy to absorb.
Here's the table of contents:
Preface - Approaching information design from a user-centric point of view
1. About information design. What is it? Who is doing it? Why is it important?
2. Process: Discovery. A step-by-step look at the research and discovery process
3. Process: Prototypes and Testing. How user research and testing help to ensure successful design
4. Design Toolkit: Visual devices to help communicate information
5. Printed Matter Case Studies. Magazines, packaging and corporate communications
6. Information Graphics Case Studies. Maps, charts, and diagrams
7. Interactive Case Studies. Websites and other screen-based projects
8. Enviromental Case Studies. Wayfinding and exhibits
9. Experimental Case Studies. Information design that pushes the envelope.

I have had the pleasure of working directly with her co-author Jill Vacarra, and the two of them make a dynamic team - exceptionally
well able to explain and illustrate the concepts they are chronicling - both for the professional and the student of graphic
design. BRAVO!

This is an absolute must have for Univ. of Illinois alumni who appreciate good photography. In talking with other alumni who
have seen and/or own this book, the images bring up memories from their time on campus. It also tweaks the curiosity, because
Hamerman shows a penchant for finding new perspectives (close-ups, etc.) that can be overlooked in the rush of campus life.
Compared to other photography of the UI campus I've seen, this is very original. And Ebert's introduction is a nice read --
it ties in wonderfully to the book. I highly recommend!
