What a super book. If you are interested in postcard history, or a lover of the adirondacks, this book has both.
The book includes 8 chapters, with 6 of the chapters giving biographies of postcard photographers of the 19th and 20 century,Mandeville, Beach, Kollecker, Ameden,Wooley, and Cassen
It was hard to put this book down.

Author has produced an interesting book of those early twentieth century photographers, whose works can still be found on early postcards. Much more than a coillection of post card images, the author has produced a book with much historical significance.

Gorgeous book

Review Date: 2002-12-19
This book, by David Freedberg, tells the fascinating story of Freedberg's discovery, on a tip from the notorious spy and brilliant art historian Anthony Blunt, of a group of amazing antique drawings stashed away in an obscure cupboard in Windsor Castle. The images, gracefully drawn and beautifully colored, depicted a bizarre range of flora and fauna: deformed lemons with claw-like legs, flamingoes, dramatic portraits of badger faces, strange plants...

The discovery marked the beginning of a great adventure told in the book--of Freedberg's search for and discovery of the source of the drawings: a 17th-century gang of noblemen and eccentrics based largely in Rome who took as their mission nothing less than the discovery, analysis, and visual record of all natural knowledge. They called themselves the Accademia Lincea, or Academy of Lynxes. This was the age of Galileo, who was in fact a member, and whose work the Lincea edited and published. With the aid of microscopes, telescopes, and other instruments, the Lincea and their peers began to develop a picture of the natural world in all its details that profoundly challenged traditional views of Heaven and Earth, supported by the Roman Catholic Church.

Freedberg's manner is at once learned and accessible. He tells a gripping story of a group of fascinating characters, some brilliant, some insane, and their grand projects, including a decidedly obsessive interest in bees. Lavishly illustrated in color and black-and-white, this is surely one of the most attractive, novel, and important works of history this year.

A MUST-HAVE FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN SCIENCE AND ITS HISTORY

Rich in breathtakingly beautiful illustrations (83 color plates, 89 halftones) "The Eye of the Lynx" is a must-have for those with a penchant for science and its history.

We are told that author Freedberg, an art history professor and director of the Italian Academy for Advanced Studies in America at Columbia University, once happened upon a neglected cupboard in Windsor Castle holding hundreds of intricately precise drawings of plants and animals dating from the Old and New Worlds. He was acting on the word of Anthony Blount, an art historian and British spy. These drawings had been hidden and forgotten since the days of King George III.

Later, after coming across countless more throughout Europe, Freedberg discovered their provenance - a small 17th century scientific group. Based in Italy it was called the Academy of Linceans for Lynx-eyed.

This optimistic organization set as their goal the representation of all nature in pictures. The mighty task of the Linceans is recounted for the first time in English in this wondrous book. They, unlike their predecessors, focused on internal structures rather than external appearances.

For its time, one of the most outre ideas proposed by the Linceans was the microscope. They simply turned Galileo's telescope around and exposed a once invisible world.

Freedberg has rendered an enormous service in bringing to light this integral portion of the development of visuals as related to natural history.

A Stunning Book

Wonderfully presented book examining the history and production facility set up by Carl Faberge. The research is spot on, as are the sumptuous colour photographs of many of the pieces produced, and I have seen few works on the subject as comprehensive as this one. As with the designers and craftsmen at the Faberge workshops this book is an inspiration, and I can thoroughly recommend it to anyone interested in the subject. A visual and intellectual feast for the mind and soul.

This book is an exhibition catalouge for what must be one of the most amazing exhibitons held on Faberge in the World, in Vienna in 1987. At the back of the book there are hundreds of illustrated items by the firm. Most of the pictures are in colour, and the book is gorgeous, and covers everything from Imperial Easter eggs to jewllery and hardstone figures.

In additon to it's stunning photos the book also has as great deal of information about the firm and it's manufacturing techniqes that many other books on Faberge don't cover.

If you can find a copy of this book - Get it! I've only got a library book but if I ever get the chance to own a copy of this I will. Shame it's out of print.

Well-written Reference Work

My spouse is an avid quilt enthusiast that has for some time wanted to delve more into fabrics, their manufacture and individual characteristics. My gift to her of this standard reference work gives her the long awaited opportunity to really understand the materials before she designs a new quilt. She can now also select new and different fabrics for their inherent characteristics rather than only select "off the shelf" fabrics usually found at most fabric shops.

A must for anyone who needs to understand textile basics

The Fabric Reference, along with the Fabric Glossary provides the best comprehensive reference of basic textiles that you can obtain anywhere in today's market. To make it a perfect reference set, you can purchase the Fabric Glossary Swatch Set directly from Ms. Humphries, which provides fabric samples to be taped into the Fabric Glossary while giving the history, manufacturing (weave, knit, lace, etc.) description and fabric content for each swatch allowing for a realistic study of fabrics. This Fabric Glossary can be continually added to as you find new fibers and fabrics - keeping an updated reference at your finger tips.
These boks are a must for fabric designers, interior designers, pattern drafters and anyone interested in fabrics or textiles, this is a three part set, which when purchased becomes all inclusive. It is rare to find any books on textiles where you can actually touch the fabrics, providing a realistic knowledge of specific make-up and texture of the fabrics. I searched for years to find a book which I could use to give a compressive overview of the textile industry, before I found Ms. Humphries set of books, and I have been using it for the past three years as the foundation of my college course. Please note that in the fall of 2003, the third revision came out and it provides a wealth of information about the new micro-fibers that are found in today's market.
This three part set (2 parts you can purchase from this company and the swatch set you need to purchase separately - information to do this, is in each book) is the best reference of textiles available.

I am buying this book for a friend's new baby. I have a very old copy of the same book that I recieved when I was just three years old. It has always fascinated and excited me. Children love it for the wild and surreal drawings. Adults love it for the sheer beauty in the artwork. I highly recommend this collection for anyone who wants something a little different. You won't be dissapointed.

But seriously, folks, this is just about your only printed choice for 121 regs besides the ones from Jeppesen, which are ONLY available by subscription (not printed in any book format). Of course you can download them from the FAA.

I have been very pleased with my FAR/FC from ASA. The two-column format and readable font are easy on the eyes. What more can you ask for? There certainly aren't many pictures! You might as well order it from here, preferably sharing the shipping cost with something else that you really want, and save yourself the tax + the $... markup at your local FBO.

I was mesmerized by each gripping page of CFRs, deffinitions, specifications and leagal poetry. I especially identified with the main hero, "Administration." Page after page I joyfully sobbed at 100 hour inspection criteria, identification number specs and general flight rules. Just thinking about 800 pages of Federal Regulations makes my heart race! It also makes great bathroom reading!

I have always loved the writings of Colin McDowell: from "The Designer Scam" to "Man of Fashion" and "Galliano." His latest, "Fashion Today," is truly the crowning achievement. Each chapter can be read as an individual essay. The writing has the same combination of criticism and appreciation--and true understanding of fashion--that is characteristic of McDowell. And the photographs--some are rare even for a fashion devotee such as myself (I thought I'd seen most, if not all). This is another beautifully designed book by Phaidon--an instant collectible!

"Fifteen Thousand Useful Phrases" by Greenville Kleiser contains a powerful and dynamic method that may be used to attain a larger repertoire of words. If applied correctly, this prodigious book will not only increase your inventory of words but will introduce you to an innumerable and serendipitous wealth of words such that your writing and speaking could become the envy of your readers and/or listeners.

It may very well be the longest book title ever. "Fifteen Thousand Useful Phrases: A Practical Handbook of Pertinent Expressions, Striking Similes, Literary, Commercial, Conversational, and Oratorical Terms, for the Embellishment of Speech and Literature, and the Improvement of the Vocabulary of Those Persons Who Read, Write, and Speak English." But it's a wonderful resource for writers. I downloaded the e-book version of this (Sorry, Amazon!) and then downloaded the file (in many parts) to my iPod, to use during essay writing at school. I use it at home when I write my own short stories. I use some of the phrases in my speech, and I can assuredly say, everyone needs a little pizazz in their speech. I would recommend downloading it for free (can't beat free) but I would GLADLY pay $25 dollars for this book. It's irreplaceable.

The Best of the Best Era of Movies
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-08-26
This is by far the greatest collection of the essential movies of the decade series. The 80's created blockbusters like The Terminator, Friday the 13th, Poltergeist, Fletch, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Raiders of the Lost Ark, ET, Rainman, The Breakfast Club, Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, Beverly Hills Cop, Robo Cop and Rambo to name but a few. They're all inside just begging to go up on your wall and be admired along with heaps of others.

You could either keep this intact as a collection of posters in a book to show and discuss with friends, or cut the book up and actually have a vast number of posters up on your wall. This book is about a third the size of your standard film poster and most movies are full page colour. Any of them would look great up on the wall. If there's a better poster collection out there then it must be really good as this is sensational!
