Compulsively purchased MANY books on Illuminations, Calligraphy and Decorated letters. This is by far the most useful. Pleasantly surprised to find it had a CD included. While not using any of the illustrations exactly, the clear, black and white designs and the ability to "reverse" them and size them on the computer gave me a head start on an alphabet carving project I am undertaking. Will definintely use this publisher for research again.

Wow! Another great publication by Shambhala. 1,000 black and white images of fancy, decorated initials make up this fat little volume. Most of the initials are florid Victorian and Art Nouveau in style, but there are some nice black letter and gothic styles as well. Better still, the companion cd-rom contains all 1,000 initials in hi resolution format for both Windows and Macintosh platforms. The PC images are saved as tiffs, a format that is supported by just about every graphic and desktop publishing software out there.

The Graphic Workshop book has been a lifesaver for me in my InDesign class! As a beginner in the Graphic Arts program, this book has guided me through the steps needed to create letterheads and the logos on them. It has been so helpful to have this book along with my InDesign workbook. It was delivered in a very timely fashion and in excellent condition. Thank you so much!

Design (Crash Course Series) [Thomas Hauffe] is a condensed history of design from the 18th through 20th century. Hauffe's writing style is interesting, informative and well thought-out. The book itself is visually stunning (a design feat in itself) with high quality images and an intuitive layout. Through the text, Hauffe explores the external influences - the developments and effects of technological advancements throughout time and the implications on design.
As a software engineer and an admirer of design / architecture, I find this small pocket book an excellent source of inspiration and an intriguing read. The factors influencing design also impact the realm of software design (a subset of design in general).
Technical, economic, aesthetic, and social developments along with political, psychological, cultural, ecological, and global influences will continue to impact software design (and all types of design). Throughout the text we can see that design is an integral part of history, and that innovation has been happening for centuries (designers have been constantly improving existing ideas). We can also observe that design is iterative (cyclic) and often occurs in patterns (similar to design patterns in the software realm).
This is an excellent book, a great source of inspiration. Many parallels can be drawn throughout this text and applied to any specific type of design.
We can learn more from history than we may think. Read!

I am an engineer with a love for design and architecture This book itself is well-designed and is printed in a handy 4-3/8" X 7-1/2" size that makes it ideal for carrying in a jacket pocket to read on an airplane or to use as a reference during a museum trip. It's richly illustrated on every page in color and printed on heavy, semi-gloss paper. The 192 pages cover the period 1750 - 1993 but are limited to European and American design. The book was originally published in Germany, and German designers have coverage that is perhaps disproportionate.
The appendices include a useful chronology, an ample bibliography, an index by subject, and an index of the more than 400 names whose work is mentioned in the body of the book. The glossary unfortunately is far too brief.
I have a very large library and prize books like this which can be repeatedly browsed with enjoyment or quickly used for reference. It would also make a nice gift for a young person with an interest in art who does not yet realize that art is all around us in things we use each day.

It is reminiscent of the huge Doodle Art posters that I colored as a kid. I recently bought another one of those posters at a drug store, and loved it so much, that I looked for similar items here on amazon.com. If you love coloring in detailed patterns, and enjoy the almost meditative state it can put you in, then buy this book right away!

This is a great book to color that will hold your interests for a long time.Designs are very complex bordering the realms of geometric designs ,floral patterns , and stained glass window all rolled into one page of intricate detail, printed on a non-bleeding , high quallity paper.I started coloring this book with my girlfriend one day out of boredom and before I knew it , I was starting the next page and then the next... My only possible complaint (had I any to offer ) would be the fact of not being able to locate more publications by Christine Dymond . Definitely a good choice.

I agree wholeheartedly with the review below and would like to add that
this book far outstrips its predecessors in the series (I haven't seen DGTC 5 yet).
The initial sections are divided by color type (pales, pastels, brights, neutrals, greys, deeps, darks), while the follow-up sections show combinations of colors, often matching colors from one section with another. I found myself thinking "I would never have thought to put those colors together but, wow! they look great!")
It would be hard to over-endorse Designer's Guide to Color 4. This book is wonderful for anyone who works with color, from the fine art student trying to get a handle on color harmony, to the mom attempting to teach her pre-teen son how not to leave the house looking like a demented clown.
Whether you need a basic reference on tried-n-true color groupings or fresh new design ideas, this book will fit the bill. Thank you, Ikuyoshu Shibukawa!

This book is a treasure when searching for innovative color combinations. Just when I thought I had run out of ideas, I found this book. It helps you use color in ways that you would not have thought of using them. The listing of the CMYK color is useful for print and can be transposed with the use of any graphics program into the RGB color. It is a great reference for web as well as print designers.

The architecture of modern MIT

continue to be seen as a lackluster urban university scattered among classrooms, office buildings, and dormitories in Boston's Back Bay section. The architect chosen for this unprecedented, highly-visible, and risky large-scale architectural undertaking was William Welles Bosworth, a MIT graduate in architecture recommended by John D. Rockefeller. Yet, Bosworth continually had to reckon with the influence of other prominent architects who had put forth their own visionary plans. Among these were Ralph Adams Cram, who had designed West Point's campus; Steven Child, a student of Frederick Law Olmstead; and the chairman of MIT's Dept. of Architecture, Desire Despradelle. Jarzombek tells the story of how Bosworth managed to remain true to his own plans rooted in his neoclassicism while accommodating the ideas of other architects and the preferences of the powerful patrons. This complex, historic project is followed with plentiful old photographs and architectural drawings from MIT's archives. The author, a professor in MIT's Dept. of Architecture, gives equal treatment to the diverse individuals who had a role in the shaping of the project, the architectural concepts of the time, and Bosworth's work and resolutions of issues along the way. Needless to say, the architectural project succeeded in putting MIT into the forefront of U. S. science and engineering universities. And Bosworth's cluster of impressive buildings continues to play a central role in MIT's staying in this position.

The book was a little pricey for my budget - but turned out to be well worth the expense! The range of school designs and locales provide great examples and were extremely helpful to me as I am working on a dissertation about school design. Finding up to date school design information - especially high performance school design, is quite difficult. This book made that so much easier. I also recommend the Prakash Nair Design Patterns for schools book.

Good for architects and for clients.
1)Architects:
This book is an excellent resource for sustainable architecture in general in addition to sustainable school design. It looks at 40+ buildings from around the world and in various architectural styles, discussing natural lighting, innovative HVAC systems, rainwater capturing and re-use, siting, natural ventilation, solar heating and cooling and many other systems. The buildings range from a community built clay brick building in rural Africa to modern high design.
A great resource when designing your own project (house, school, whatever building type) in terms of brainstorming how to incorporate sustainable design systems. Also excellent for taking the next research step of comparing a variety of approaches to each individual system, and the book ends with a list of websites for further info. A valuable and inspiring find!
2) Clients:
A very helpful review of a wide variety of sustainable systems, it covers buildings of all budgets and styles. There is a list of the architects of each of the buildings, but the book can also be used for getting some useful background to help in working with an architect of your choosing.

I have done a great deal of reading in the area of leadership and this has to be the best thing I have read, to date, on the topic of leadership on a global setting. McCall and Hollenbeck draw some valuable conclusions and make a few statements that any leader in a global setting absolutely needs to know.
Some of the most valuable information on derailment of global executives out there. McCall and Hollenbeck discuss a number of factors that stunt or completely derail the development of budding leaders and then offer some hope on how to avoid some of the pitfalls.
