This book covers very well some of the most important people in American History. N.C. Wyeth,Howard Pyle, Dean Cornwell,Harvey Dunn, Frank Schoonover and Philip Goodwin have illustrated the turn of the 1800's to 1900's with the same spirited passion that bred our great country. It's this great passion that is given to the pictures that they created that seperates their work from photographs which are just taken. Looking at the Illustrations shows you that Pyle was successful in creating an American art which will always be a foundation for Illustrators to follow.

Incredible collection of paintings and the stories that go along with them. Colorful with spectacular detail of the famous paintings of a time gone by. Amazing how the author was able to put together a collection of this magnitude. A must have for anyone who appreciates art. It is perfect as a gift to that special person you care about.

Just finished reading this book and have to say its amazing.

very insightful cross section of the Vj community. Much to be learnt about the wide range of VJs out there.

It has a good mix between articles on specific issues, looking at the world of VJs, and technical articles explaining how established VJs have their setup.

The DVD has been produced to a very high standard, and like the book lots of informative content is on it.

The book looks beautiful with all the UV pages, and so much design work has gone into it.

anyone who has not got this book yet is missing out big time, recommended to the highest degree.

I was contacted by D-Fuse for an interview for a book a few months ago. I am a VJ as well and I was expecting some sort of paper bag book when it came out. I got it yesterday, a day after my birthday in fact and I have never seen a book (if you can call it just that) with so much detail and so much artistic value.

The audio-visual art + vj culture is one of those books you need to have in your livingroom for your friend to look up despite its content yet. Tp make it better there is so much information inside, even a graphic on how many VJs are per country.

Is a book compared to those of Frank Lloyd Wight. Is one of those books that make you feel like having one even you do not know what is about. The best thing is that you will learn a lot because of the way all reference are managed. And you know what? I'm on page 160!!!

Really good work regarding content and desing, I am very very impress. I am about to get another one, one to show to the people and another one for me.

A great resource for beginning and established VJs

This book is a brilliant piece of art as much as it is a great resource for beginning and established VJs. The presentation of pictures and graphics is stunning, and looking at all of the eyecandy in the book can be inspiring.

This book does a great job of showcasing the best talent in the business in the form of interviews and articles. There are also some really great tips and how-to guides that even the most experienced VJ can learn from. Equipment hardware and software is covered thoroughly and explained in detail.

This is truly a book all VJs should add to their bookcase because it will always serve as a great reference tool as well as entertain and enage you as a casual reader. I highly recommend this book to all VJs and people that have a passion for motion graphics and live performance art.

This book was several years in the making, and I admire the dedication of those involved in getting it to print.

Unfortunately, that means that in such a rapidly-moving field, it's a bit out of date. Several of the acts featured have disappeared off the radar by now, and there are some quite glaring omissions - such as the EyeWash DVDs, Resolume software (currently used by around a third of the world's top VJ's) and uh... PC's. This wouldn't bother me as much if not for the tagline on the back cover which touts 'full details of the hardware and software available for VJing are provided'. I'd suggest that 'examples of hardware and software available for Mac-based VJing are provided'.

If you get the impression that you need a pair of Mac Powerbooks to VJ from the setups and info given in this book, don't worry - that's not the case. The scene featured in this book is just one aspect of international VJ Culture, and it's been curated from a particularly Mac perspective.

It's a graphic-design triumph - you couldn't ask for more beautiful, slick presentation. The background of Faulkner and other members of D-Fuse as print-based graphic designers with decades of experience between them really shows. Personally, I find the layering and shiny panels a bit distracting and hard to read at one sitting, and I feel like I should put on gloves every time I pick it up as the slightest touch leaves great grubby fingerprints on some of the shinier pages. But it's a stunning, jaw-dropping book, which is just what the scene needed.

To be honest, I don't see this as a book to read so much as to show-off. VJing is a very visual artform, so what better way to communicate what it's all about than in gorgeous, awe-inspiring imagery? Even if it's a bit of a struggle to actually sit and read it cover-to-cover, it's the PERFECT coffee-table book. You couldn't ask for a better showcase for potential clients, newbie wannabes or... well... your Mum... to show what VJing is and why you're dedicating yourself to it despite the bad pay, the expensive equipment, the long hours, etc etc.

A friend of ours runs a Band House, where touring members of bands stay when they're performing in her town. She's a VJ, and so in a good position to plug 'have you thought about using visuals?' on a daily basis. She said this book's been the perfect way to do that - she just leaves a copy lying around and the muso's thumb through it over their breakfast.

The DVD is a huge improvement over that provided with Spinrad's 'the VJ Book'. There's a load of great material on it, and most of it's of an equivalent standard to the imagery in the book - the glamour, high-end of the VJ scene. Positively wow-worthy, and the most impressive DVD collection of live VJing I've seen to date. Some of my favourite parts though were cut very short - eg just a minute or two long - and then there's the bizarrely out of place inclusion of long swathes of content by Elliott Earls, most of which has little to do with the VJ scene - eg a long mockumentary called the Saranay Hotel. Given that there was so much other great VJ content that could have gone on there, I can't work out why Earls' doco was included. It's got nothing to do with VJing or audio-visual art, and the quality is so vastly different to everything else on the DVD.

Like Spinrad's VJ Book before it, I've bought multiple copies of this book/DVD to give away whenever I can afford it. I take a copy to meetings with new clients, and I lend copies to newbie VJs that come along to our Plug n Play nights. The real problem is keeping a copy for myself, as everyone wants to take it home.

The VJ scene is really still very young - maybe equivalent to the DJ scene of two or three decades ago - and we need some impressive look-at-me Superstar VJ's to get the public to take notice, so that the rest of us can get on with doing what we do with hopefully a bit more attention being paid to what's going on behind the scenes on the screens.

I think this book is probably the single biggest factor so far in that process of getting the public to take notice. It's a lush, visually stunning celebration of a new phenomenon. Thanks so much to Faulkner and the rest of D-Fuse for giving this to the scene. Every VJ should own a copy. Or three.

i saw this book at a financial advisor's office and immediately came home and purchased it. it is a fabulous melding of text and photography, beautifully rendered. if you have visited this part of new york, you will enjoy the memories....if you have not been there yet, look at this before you go and it will greatly enrich your experience.

This book is a pleasure to read and to keep around for others to enjoy. I keep it on my desk at work so that my visitors can enjoy the incredible photography. The book also gives a unique insight in to the history of the many firms on Wall Street and how consolidation has led to our current list of players. Many find it interesting to see how certain firms came to be what they are today.

One example of an interesting foreshadow is that the author has included a picture of the Banker's Trust building reflecting off of a Deutsche Bank conference room table. The two frims merged several years after the photo was taken.

Since buying this book I now enjoy walking around lower Manhattan. While before I was caught up in the rat race, I know see the beauty of the arcitecture and can better appreciate the history of Wall Street. This book is full of insightful anecdotes which lead to interesting stories for me to share.

This book is a must for anyone who works in the finacial world for its insight and to keep around for others to enjoy.

I was happily surprised when I saw one of the authors books on Nantucket while on vacation there. I bought the book and was again happily surprised at its combination of photography and narration. I would rate Nantucket Island five stars as well.

You can stop looking for books on business law. This book it the definitive guide to business law. West's is synonymous with business law, and this text proves why.

Just a tremendous wealth of solid info. I only wish I had the most updated version, and not one a few years old. (I bought a used copy on Amazon to save some money.)

I recently purchased this book since it was directly related to my job (Purchasing). My friend went to a college that used this same book and it had looked interesting.

After I bought it from Amazon (lowest price, believe me), I was very satisfied. The author explains all topics in a clear manner and provides interesting case examples. This is one book that I will use as reference over and over. I can't imagine myself without it now. I also can't imagine a better business law book.

My wife and I purchased West's Business Law, 7th ed. through the University of the Pacific bookstore and were generally pleased with it. We have referred to it on numerous occasions to understand legal concepts at school, as well as in our private lives. However...The copy we received was defective. It was missing everything between appendix page 212 and glossary page G-11. I have e-mailed the publisher, but received no response. I will probably order ANOTHER copy of the book (this time through amazon.com) and hope that this copy isn't defective. Because of the difficulty in getting a response from the publisher, I recommend ordering through a reputable retailer like amazon.com (which focuses on customer service as a priority).

the book was really helpful for preparing myself for recording dates and auditions. it has many useful techniques in it that work amazingly well. I recomend this book for all voice talents cause its a wicked rad book.

"A camera does not lie," say the authors, "and neither does a microphone."

That's why this book is so valuable. Although trying to teach voiceover skills through a book is inherently challenging -- sort of like trying to teach driving, or violin-playing, that way -- this book is the most successful one I am aware of. It is without doubt the best single resource on voiceover work in print today.

The key is the authors' relentless focus on the internal process of creating great readings, which they call "The Basic Process."

"Ad copy is more than just a bunch of words strung together to promote a product," they write in Chapter 2. "It is very much like a miniature play, with a beginning, a middle, and an end. One or more characters are involved, and it takes place at a particular time and place. You need to discover all those elements and more to act out the copy."

To get in touch with the reality of the copy, the authors detail their Basic Process: "Focus - Visualize - Commit." Using this process "allows you to make the copy your own little drama or comedy with its own life and vitality." Without it, "all your readings will sound alike -- and that sound will be mechanical and lacking in conviction." I don't know how anyone could lay out this crucial principle more clearly. The detailed suggestions for how to follow the Basic Process are both helpful and understandable.

The book offers a wealth of other information as well, including discussions about refining your reads, developing other voices and characters, preparing for animation work, producing a demo tape, finding an agent, handling auditions, and promoting yourself in your market. Throughout the book, voice actors, casting directors, advertising writers, and other industry experts are quoted extensively with helpful advice and entertaining war stories. Practice copy in various genres is provided. And the appendices contain numerous listings of workshops, agencies, and other resources of interest to voice talent. Every chapter offers tremendous value, all of it written with charm, elegance, and a sense of humor.

Anyone serious about a voiceover career should get this book and devour it.

I always recommend this book. Susan Blu has the credentials: she's an accomplished voice talent, a casting director and a voice acting teacher. Along with tips and tricks, there's a great regional listing of agencies, schools and studios with addresses and phone numbers. She knows her stuff and you'd be doing yourself a favor by following her advice in this book.

Word of Mouth is a must-read for anyone interested in voiceovers as a hobby or profession. Susan and Molly hit the target on this one. I had a hard time putting it down on my first reading. In fact, most current VO folks should read this book just to renew their base. Many good observations, suggestions, avenues of interest, etiquette and a good number of leads on several agencies and studios. Plus** Good suggestions on auditioning, making your demo and more!

If you're on your way up - add this reasonably priced referance book to your libary. If you're an established pro - get this anyway to hon your skills and memory.

I'm a children's book editor, and run a web site called "The Purple Crayon," where I review this book in detail. Here are some excerpts from that review:

Children's Writer's and Illustrator's Market has established itself as an inexpensive "yellow pages" of children's publishing for authors and illustrators in the United States.... This year's edition seems to me to be at least as good as its predecessors.

As usual, the core of CWIM is the Markets section, which includes listings of publishers of books, magazines, greeting cards/puzzles/games, and plays, with a special sub-category for young writers and illustrators. The Book Publishers part is just over 100 pages long, as it was last year, with short profiles of 9 "insiders" (writers, illustrators, editors) interspersed throughout. This year, a sub-section of Canadian and International book publishers has been added.... The magazine section is also quite sizable.

Before the Markets section come 19 articles, of which the first four--"Just Getting Started?", "How to Use This Book...," "Before Your First Sale," and "The Business of Writing and Illustrating"--appear every year. The remaining articles cover a wide variety of subjects, such as writing query letters, how to deal with rejection, whether unknown and unagented authors can get published, and self-promotion for illustrators. Two I particularly enjoyed--though everyone will have their own favorites--were "Writing Through Rejections: Advice from Jane Yolen & Vivian Van Velde," and "When Size Matters: The Synopsis...."

Comments: As I have said before about CWIM (this quotation actually appeared on the cover of their 2003 edition): "You need a market guide with detailed information you can't find elsewhere. This book is the best available." CWIM remains the leading market guide for children's writers and illustrators with the 2004 edition. All active US children's writers and illustrators should get this guide, and should strongly consider buying a new edition every year. Yes, you could gather much of the information you'll find in it on your own, through diligent searches online, phone calls, and guideline and catalog requests to publishers. But the time spent doing that is time lost from your real work.

My wife asked for this for her birthday. She absolutely loves it. So much so that we recently purchased 6 more as gifts for her friends in different crafting groups. She insists that 4000 Animal, Bird and Fish Motifs has inspired her with tons of quilting/craft ideas. This book is a great gift. We also purchased the other 4000 book of Flowers.

There is, indeed, an encyclopedic amount of creatures in this book, all arranged ark-like by kind; that is, fish are together, birds together, and etc. The images are in black and white making them very usable for a variety of arts and crafts. The images also come from many sources, both historical and geographic. This is a useful collection for artists and a great reference for those interested in the history of image. The only improvement I can think of is in terms of usability: a spiral binding would have been welcome. Recommended.

This is an excellent publication for craftspeople, artists and teachers of all artforms. The beautifully presented fauna motifs of all our major art "epochs" will not fail to inspire. I have recommended this book to other artist friends who have also purchased it.

I find this to be a very useful, thorough advertising design / marketing student's resource. As with most printed ads in award books or publications, you wish the images were a little larger but the ideas are there as well as the layouts. I'm still going through it with a fine tooth comb and am very happy with my investment.

I have to take exception to Jon Shell's editorial comment about the author. It is totally irrelevant and disrespectful of the thoughtful and compelling treatment Mr. McArthur gives to Canada's airline industry.

However, that said, I actually had the opportunity to meet Mr. McArthur at a book signing. He has a very strong grip, an icy stare and a boyish shock of blond hair reminiscent of Robert Redford circa 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid'. I suspect Mr. McArthur will go far in the entertainment industry.

Excellent historical perspective

I bought this book the first day out and read through it in about 3 days. I found it quite exceptional for its historical perspective, but not particularly insightful. The author spends the entire book trying very hard not to put any editorial spin on anything which doesn't really make it very readable, but becomes a great reference material down the line.

My initial thought when I finished reading it was that this book may become the Canadian equivalent of "Hard Landing", the book by Thomas Petzinger which has become the de-facto mass market textbook on the impact of US airline deregulation.

This book is definitely a must-have for industry professionals and hardcore airline affectionados, but a casual reader is probably better served to wait for the paperback or deep discount.

Everyone claims to be an expert on airlines. Frankly-some of these so called "airline history" books are dead wrong. The Canadian saga has been going on for about as long as the Star Wars series, except here thousands of people's livelihoods and the economic wealth of a nation are at stake. Air Monopoly is balanced, well told and VERY interesting.

the book binding and photo quality could be better.

An Overlooked Classic That Put Airbus on the Map

Some three decades ago, when a group of European companies proposed building a twin-engine widebody aircraft, most people in the aviation world thought the idea would be a commercial failure. The A300 is now admired on every continent. Some two decades, Airbus proposed another twin-engine design, this time a single-aisle aircraft, which would compete against Boeing 727 and 737, the best selling jet airliners of all time; again, people were sceptical of the plane's ability to sell. The A320 family of airliners (which includes the short-body A319 and stretched A321, along with the scaled-down A318) has now sold over 1,000 airframes, bestowing on Airbus as the world's number one seller of airliners.

Tim Lamming and Robert Hewson's book contains a wealth of detail about the development of the A320, touching on its stablemates, the A319, A321, and A318. Technical specifications also abound. Photo captions are detailed and informative. My only complaint with this book, and others in Airlife Airliners series, is the lack of interior photographs: two flight deck pictures, economy class cabin view, and picture of the rear galley. I really would have likes some views taken from inside the aircraft, especially of the wing flaps upon landing.

Between the time the book was published and the writing of this review, a great deal has happened, and even more airlines have purchased or leased this increasingly popular aircraft, most notably jetBlue. Nevertheless, the book is up to date and thorough, offering the aviation enthusiast a good look at the overlooked classic that put Airbus on the map.

Excellent A-320 Overview

I have been lucky enough to fly many different aircraft in my airline career (A-320, L-1011, DC-9, MD-80, B-727, B-737, B-747-400, B-757, and B-767) and of all of them my favorite is the A-320. OK, I admit it, my VERY favorite is the L-1011, but unfortunately the old girl has largely been put out to pasture now. But after the TriStar, there is no question that the A-320 is the one I would rather spend my time in, hands down, bar none. It is a pilot friendly machine, and the only people I know that badmouth it are the people who haven't ever flown it. It is an honest, forgiving, and easy plane to fly, and is smart enough to do the things you want it to do for you (like shutting down the air conditioning packs prior to engine start, and turning them back on when the engine is stabilized on speed), but is still a joy to hand fly. This is one airplane that has the competition beat, hands down. (I can say that since I have flown the 737, too.)

Now that you know how I feel about the airplane, let me tell how I feel about the book: it is a great introduction to the Airbus A-320 series. It has scads of beautifully shot color photos, useful production and operator lists, and an excellent general history of Airbus and the A-320 family specifically. There is a nice section on technical specifications for the series, and although it doesn't get into pilot level systems descriptions, what the book does say is pretty much on the money, and easy to understand. They even have a nice diagram of PFD/ND/ECAM data and symbology found on the six CRTs. There is a very general discussion on the benefits of Fly-By-Wire (FBW), but I suspect most readers would have liked a bit more on this remarkable technology. (Yes, I prefer the side stick to the yoke...)

This book is great for pilots, enthusiasts, or for that matter, aerospace historians. My only (tiny) nitpicks were a couple of explanations that are less than completely correct in the accident section, particularly in the Lufthansa Warsaw accident. The errors mostly concern omitting a few crucial details, and unless you are an A-320 pilot or an accident investigator you won't really care anyway. I realize that being concise is something the editors require, but sometimes another line or two can really clarify matters.

All told this is another in the excellent "Airliner Color History" series, which are generally great. For someone who wants an introduction to the greatest airliner family in the world (and here I include all the FBW Airbus family members from the A-318 to the A-380) with lots of outstanding photographs and excellent background text, this book can't be beat.

Each volume of this British series covers a unique commercial aircraft type from its design, production, entry into service, its usage by airlines, and in some cases eventual demise.

Each volume features plenty of color and black and white photographs of the subject aircraft along with a complete construction list (accurate to date of publication for aircraft types still being built).

This volume discusses the design and development of the Airbus A320 series of airliners ... from their advanced design to their almost futuristic flight-control systems ... as well as the ususal around-the-world look at the aircraft type's operators.
