While this book offers an excellent collection of images related to the Bauhaus, it traces the history and the development of the Bauhaus comprehensively as well.
This book, alongwith Eva Forgacs' Bauhaus Idea and Bauhaus Politics can give you a general idea about what the institution was all about.

Bauhaus was one of the most important movements in design-history.
Magdalena Drosta describes the ideas, the people, the work and the spirit of the Bauhaus. The best thing: It is never boring. The book does not only concentrate on the art taught at the Bauahaus but also describes its political problems.
A lot of excellent pictures in a good priniting quality (especially in relation to the price) make this a book, you always like to look at.

If you want a comprehensive historical information as well as tons of full color photos of all sorts of Bauhaus inspired works -from architecture to practical objects - this is the book you should have. Open it and read a single article, think about it and close the book. Or browse through the photos and marvel at the teapots, the furniture, the architectural style.

You can savor this one slowly (and I think you should) rather than trying to read it through all at once. If you do that, you'll start to get a sense of the Bauhaus style and how it fits into the particular period when it came into being - and how it grew and evolved from there.

To know about Bauhaus deeply...

If you are a civil aviation buff, this book has a wealth of detail on the latest version of the venerable 747, the series -400. The book contains a wealth of information on the design, construction, and operation of all versions of the -400, both outside and inside the aircraft (including the cockpit). Operators of the series -400 are surveyed, and a history of the type is presented. I find myself looking through this book over and over!

The Airlife's Airliner series of books cover individual commercial aircraft types in an interesting, in-depth manner.

Each volume of this British series covers a unique commercial aircraft type from its design, production, entry into service, its usage by airlines, and in some cases eventual demise.

Each volume features plenty of color and black and white photographs of the subject aircraft along with a complete construction list (accurate to date of publication for aircraft types still being built).

This volume covers the most recent incarnation of the Boeing 747 ... the most successful widebody airliner ever built. The 747 may be credited with bringing air travel to the masses ... making airfares affordable to the general population due to the large amount of seats available.

The 747-400 ... while technically similar to its older sisters ... is in fact an almost brand new aircraft ... featuring newer technology and a more advanced wing. Regardless, the 747-400 still carries the same sweeping, unmistakable lines of its earlier sisters ... making it one of the most recognizable shapes in the world.

Ok this book is a great general guide to the 757. It contains details of design, flight test, airline operations and more. It doesn't delve too much into technical details but you do learn about the engine choices and such. As well you see photos of every origional operator and some secondary operators as well. This book was published a few years back so any new operators and paint schemes won't be here but it is a great starter book if you like this particular model.

This is an in-depth look at one of the most successful commercial aircraft ever produced, the Boeing 757. Beautifully illustrated with numerous full color photographs, there is also quite a bit of history and information concerning the design, development and production of the 757.

The Rolls Royce RB.211-535C was the initial power plant offered on the 757 airframe, specified by both launch customers, British Airways and Eastern. The history, photographs and schematic drawings of this engine, as well as the Pratt & Whitney PW2037 turbofan which would be utilized later, are a welcome addition to the book. Photographs of the airliner in the livery of many different airlines (including a superb America West "centerfold"), as well as a comprehensive listing of the production run of the 757, including aircraft serial numbers and the airline each was placed into service with, make this a must have book.

The Boeing 757, in my opinion, is the most beautiful commercial aircaft flying today, it is reminiscent of the Douglas DC-8 Super 60 Series (with two engines instead of the four the DC-8 had). Sleek and elegant, it's look is only surpassed by the two classics produced by Lockheed Aircraft, the Constellation "Connie" and the L-1011 Tristar (nothing could ever surpass the Tristar).

One of the best books on the L1011.

All About The Magnificent Boeing 757!

Review Date: 2004-11-09
All of the books in the "Airliner Color History" series are definitely worth a good hard look if you're an aviation enthusiast. This 128-page paperback volume is all about the Boeing 757, and will give any 757 lover all the information he/she could possibly need with regard to this sleek-looking twin-jet, which first took to the skies on February 19, 1982 (on a 2-hr., 31-min. test flight).

It seems hard to believe that the last 757 has now rolled off of the assembly line in Renton, Washington. The 1,050th, and last, 757 to be built was unveiled on October 28, 2004. It was a 757-200 model in the colors of Shanghai Airlines.

The 757 has the distinction of being one of just seven airliner models that has sold more than 1,000 units. And the first 926 of them are listed in the "Production History" chapter of this book, which was published in 2001.

I still regard the 757 as being a "new" model of commercial aircraft. To me, it still has a kind of "futuristic" look to it. As far as narrow-bodied aircraft, I'd say that the B757 is the best-looking airplane in the world's skies today. It would rank second only to Boeing's mammoth behemoth, the 747, on my list of "Favorite Aircraft". You simply cannot beat the 747 for awe-inspiring gazes every time you watch one of those 800,000-pound babies take off or when you see one of them perfectly plunk down its huge collection of 18 wheels onto an airport runway. Simply amazing every time I see one.

But the 757 isn't far behind. The '57 has a certain "bird-like" look to it that just makes it "perfect" in my book (from a "plane-spotter's" point-of-view). Interestingly, too, you might have noticed that Boeing's newest airplane project (to date), the Boeing "7E7 Dreamliner", will have a similar "757 look" to it once it is produced.

Besides listing detailed stats on every single Boeing 757 ever built (through early 2000), other chapters of interest in this book include -- "Evolution", "Design And Development", "Production", "Technical Specification", "In Service", "Customers", "Accidents And Incidents", and "Chronology".

Many, many top-quality full-color photos are included in this volume as well. Plus: there's a goodly number of graphs, charts, schematics, and behind-the-scenes pictures of 757s in production.

It's kind of sad to know that Boeing has rolled out its last 757. But, at the same time, it's a virtual certainty that this magnificently-built aircraft will still be flying many, many years down the road.

If you'd like to see the very last 757 ever produced, you can visit the webpage below. .............

This volume of the series follows Boeing's replacement for the venerable Boeing 727 airliner. The book discusses the various design ideas that Boeing was considering as well as the various efforts that were combined into one of the most successful commercial aicraft programs of the 20th century.

Unfortunately, with the recent collapse of the world airline industry the days of the 757 seem to be numbered ... and this aircraft model may very well follow its parent the 727 into history.

Being aware of the work of Vargo as musician - Nox Arcana - I felt curious about his production as visual artist. After going through the book - text and pictures - I was left with mixed feelings. Not being an art critic I nevertheless sensed there was a unbalance in his art production. His depictions of the human figure are weaker than his backgrounds and monsters. I know he didn't go to an art school and that's perhaps what's missing in his drawing of the human figure: depth, proportion, reality. Now his monsters are something else. His gargoyles are magnificent, and he masters the drawing and painting of stone as very rarely seen. So the latter seem much more alive than the human figures.
All in all it is a good choice to get introduced to Joseph Vargo artwork.
And it made me willing to wait and see the following publications of the kind.

Vargo's work is hard to describe, stunning, romantic, dark, sensual, are just a few words that come close to the images. This book has a collection of well known Vargo images along with never before seen images.

If you love gothic artwork, then this book belongs on your bookshelf!!

A terrific book for everyone in the post-9/11 world

Review Date: 2004-07-05
This outstanding book is easy to read and useful to everyone who wants to build security into their region, city, community, home, workplace, design and construction projects, and daily routine. Topics are clearly divided into sections and chapters. Sections include achieving transparent security (the opposite of designing fortresses and building bunkers), planning and design of buildings (including commercial, institutional, historic, and religious facilities, schools, health facilities, single and multifamily residential, and many others); engineering, technology, construction, cost estimating, codes and liability concerns. A who's who of experts in the design and construction world, government and nonprofit organizations, along with the author/architect, write about security for many situations and building types.

A series of lessons learned from benchmark events, such as September 11, 2001, the Oklahoma City bombing, Khobar Towers, and major natural disasters, are found throughout the book, reflecting extensive research about what went wrong in the past, and how we can learn from previous mistakes. Rarely has such a comprehensive reference been compiled for the public.

For those concerned about home and business security, there are dozens of handy checklists, charts, and illustrations for disaster planning, emergency response, disaster recovery, and even how to handle public relations and the media when your organization is caught in the middle of a crisis. Homeowners, landlords, families, and those involved in residential design and construction will find information about design and emergency management techniques to minimize damage from fires, tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, blackouts, and natural disasters.

Readers will be pleasantly surprised with many impressionist pen and ink architectural drawings illustrating the topics, injecting a creative, artistic touch into serious discussion. Hundreds of checklists, diagrams, top 10 lists, website resources, and photos simplify important concepts and summarize key ideas at a glance. Examples include how to recognize suicide bombers to safety checklists for building personnel dealing with intruders, hostages, suspicious packages and workplace violence.

Not to be missed are the very moving photographs of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon taken on and immediately after September 11, 2001, by those on the scene. They serve as a chilling, yet poignant reminder to readers everywhere why this remarkably comprehensive book is so essential and immensely valuable to everyone concerned with building safety, freedom, democracy, and maintaining a free and open society. Highly recommended, as a must have, must read!

Tad Crawford has written a whole series of books out of his expertise in the law and creative arts, with a special focus on photography and visual arts. I'd suggest looking at Tad's other books, too, since this one is more action-focused without extensive explanations of the whys and wherefores of it.

"Business and Legal Forms" has the documents you'll need, such as model and property releases, copyright transer forms, publishing contracts and other stock art forms. His descriptions are very helpful. Of greatest practical use, though, is the included media containing MS Word documents of all of the forms.

If you're just getting started in the arts, you need this book!

He has thoroughly covered practically every situation a commercial artist is likely to face. This book contains 21 complete tear-out forms appropriately prepared for specific business matters such as estimates, collaboration, illustrator-agent agreement, consignment and sale of artwork just to name a few. This new revised edition conveniently includes forms on a CD-ROM. It also includes a detailed explanation on how to use each form. The legal advice found in this book will surely save you a great deal of time and money which is invaluable to any working artist. Unless you are a ''starving artist'' who works for food only, this informative legal guide will no doubt prove itself very useful and effifcient. This is truly an essential book for commercial artists!

This is an excellent text at various levels of interest, desire, talent and time. The text is arranged that given the time, the Instructor can dig deeper and deeper into thorny topics. Additionally, curious students can rely on numerous web sources for enhanced views and greater depth.

Further, there are additional sources for the Instructor available through test banks and outlines. This is my favorite text to teach from. It is neither dry with enough cases to stir the imagination of the younger students nor MTV'd and contains sufficient current cases to give older students and retired students pause to consider. 5 stars. Stare decisis is a doctrine that prescribes following earlier
judicial decisions in deciding a current case if the facts and
questions are similar. Courts attempt to be consistent with their
own prior decisions and with the decisions of courts superior
to them. Stare decisis is important because part of the function
of law is to maintain stability. If the application of the law
was unpredictable, there would be no consistent rules to follow
and no stability.

I am using this textbook in several of my classes, and let me just say- it has everything I could have hoped for. The chapters are laid out well, many cases are cited, and the student is given actual cases to figure out, with the citations given at the end so he can find the actual outcome. I've found this to be among the best textbooks. It is so good, in fact that I've reccomended it to several of my friends who are going into business for themselves. This covers nearly everything they'll need to know regarding contracts, secured transactions, warranties, etc.
Love the law!

I was given a copy of this book for my birthday several years ago and spent hours pouring over its prose and its historical narratives. I never grow tired of this book.

Credit for this work goes to its author who has accomplished the near to impossible - an engaging and personal history of Washington DC told through the destroyed architecture and the people behind the buildings and their creation. The illustrations are gorgeous, but its Goode's way with worlds that allows the reader to lose themselves in the history of the buildings profiled.

I would imagine that this type of book in the wrong hands would become an academic tome, dry and technical. Goode brings the people of the District to life for the reader, and compels the reader to look for more.

If the book fails, it is in the lack of a comprehensive map of the whole District of Columbia. If you are not familiar with the streets and layout of the city (itself genius) then the book can be confusing.

Ideally, I would suggest this as a gift to anyone interested in history, city planning, government or historical architecture.

Now in an updated second edition, Capital Losses: A Cultural History Of Washington's Destroyed Buildings by Washington history expert James M. Goode is a carefully presented documentation and chronicle of the great architectural and cultural edifices of Washington, D.C., which have been lost to the endless grind of urban renewal in the years prior to 1978. That was the year in which crucial preservation legislation was passed. Packed from cover to cover with black-and-white photographs, enhancing a text which is extensive in detail, history, unique historical insights, Capital Losses is an exceptional architectural tour and a unique resource offering a kind of "window" into the architectural past of the nation's capital.

As you pour over all the wonderful black and white images and run you eyes over the artistry and talent it took to create most of these long gone structures you can help, but pause and take a deep breath. This book has scholarly, exhaustively researched text that enlighens and educates the reader. I agree with one articulate reviewer that stated that the author did not make allowances for market forces and changing times, but having said that, I do believe that most of these buildings could have been saved and used for other purposes, I mean the retrofited old buildings in NYC and Boston, why not Washington. The destruction of so many buildings is unconscionable, and when you see the buildings that replaced them all you do is stare. I was not around in the sixties so i didnt witness the worst of this senceless destruction, but i know that here in Houston, even today, great old buildings are never totally safe, it's no wonder Europeans don't get us, as an American i don't get us either. Highly recommended..the book and perservation.

The Non-Tourist's Historical Washington, D.C.

Unique and engaging, "Capital Losses" is a scrapbook chronicle of Washington, DC-- not as the "nation's capital," but as a collection of neighborhoods, people, and activities.

The book memorializes dozens of buildings lost to the wrecker's ball. Each edifice is featured in a one- to two-page chapter that includes splendid vintage photographs. The accompanying write-ups always discuss design elements, thanks to the authors' encyclopedic knowledge in this area. The story of each structure is then expanded into a discussion of the designers, builders, and notable inhabitants. "Capital Losses" is a survey of history, intrigue, gossip as well as architectural styles. That's what makes this book so fun.

The authors' sympathy for historic preservation is to a fault. Narratives hardly attempt to recognize the social, economic, and technological forces that so often make demolition inexorable. For example, the advent of central air conditioning initiated the doom of many hotel and office structures that could not be economically retrofitted. In addition, the post-war demise of downtown commercial areas also accelerated the decay and eventual destruction of many classic structures.

To be fair, an analysis of causal forces was not the intention of this volume. It pays homage to Washington's folksier history in an elegant manner. This is a wonderful coffee table book.

In this fascinating book, De Dampierre brings a fresh perspective to world history by describing it through one of the most ubiquitous items in our daily lives: chairs. In doing so, she has produced a highly enjoyable read for both the sophisticated antique collector and the general student of history.

I have read Chairs; A History and find it to be fasinating from two view points. One is that it is more than a history of furniture, it is a social history of the people who sat in the chairs and their times and their culture. Secondly I will retain it for years as one of the most complete reference books on the cultural periods discussed. Finally it is beautifully illustrated and written and should be in everyone's library.

A Simply Fantastic Book!

No one who has seen my home would expect me to have anything to do with a furniture book. But some perceptive friend gave me this book and now I get it! Under Ms. de Dampierre's tutelage, I have grown to understand how pieces of furniture are a reflection of the times in which they were created. This study of chairs is no less fascinating than any great work of art history and the author does an incredible job of detailing changes in social and political currents which impact the design and use of each chair in her exhaustive chronology. As importantly, the pictures are beautiful; the book is worth buying for them alone.

the ultimate book on chairs

Florence de Dampierre has produced what will certainly be not only the definitive guide to the chair itself but also a witty and learned look at how modes of communication in differing cultures governed the kind of furniture people invented for themselves. The scope of the book is huge, ranging from the cradle of civilization in Mesopotamia and Africa to the chair as modern art. I recommend it highly, both for serious collectors as well as anyone who has ever thought twice about the provenance of the place they've just sat down in. The book is copiously and beautifully illustrated, so it makes a lovely gift.
