One winter, Debbie finds herself bedridden with a cold. She has a dream of dancing with a snowman, who invites her to go to the land of the winter king. She is understandably upset when she wakes up and finds that there is no palace of ice or trees of silver, but is comforted by her Grandpa's words "dreams sometimes come true - but not always in the way we expect."
Her Aunt invites her to come and see the "trees of silver" in her garden in spring time... Debbie can hardly wait.

18 gorgeously illustrated pages of story by Belgian artistic geniuses Gilbert Delahaye and Marcel Marlier, provide a heart moving backdrop to a story all about the changing of seasons, patience and holding onto the joy of dreams. This will always be one of my favorites and I hope to share it with my kids.

My binding with this ISBN is a 12"x9" hardcover.
Other books in this series that I liked are:
Debbie Learns to Cook and Debbie's Birthday Party.

This is going to be my new "baby shower gift" for all the expectant mothers. Such a FUN, easy book. You don't need to make a million trips to the craft store, as most of the stuff I have around the house. It's broken up into seasons, holidays etc. Such fun creative things to do with the kids! Each activity also focuses on certain "attributes" if you will. Self esteem, working in a group...etc. Love it...did I say I love this book? :)

TERRIFIC TIME TRAVEL TALE...
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-06-12
Winner of both the Hugo and Nebula Awards for science fiction, this book is a tour de force that is sure to captivate all those who love time travel themes, as well as those who have a deep appreciation for medieval history. The author masterfully melds these two genres, creating a novel that is riveting and highly entertaining.

The year is 2048 A.D., and a young history student named Kivrin is preparing to do an on site study of the turbulent fourteenth century. Her mission has placed two of the University's professors at cross purposes, as the proponent for this study, Mr. Gilchrist, finds himself pitted against Mr. Dunworthy, Kivrin's mentor, who believes that this trip in time is far too dangerous. Mr. Gilchrist, however, is in the position to have the final say on the project.

Kivrin is scheduled to land in the rural English countryside of the fourteenth century some twenty years before the Black Death savages England. Armed with the knowledge of fourteenth century customs, dress, languages, religious practices, and history, Kivrin is raring to go back in time. When she travels back, however, an unforeseen crisis in the present places Kivrin in a potentially deadly situation upon her arrival in the past.

The book alternates between what is happening in the present and what is happening in the past, as those in the present work to unravel the mystery of what went wrong. Meanwhile, Kivrin struggles to overcome the anomalous situations she encounters that run contra to her expectations. Believing herself stranded in the past, Kivrin artfully maneuvers around the precarious situations in which she finds herself, never losing her humanity despite the horror of her situation, given what went wrong.

Steeped in well-researched medieval life, it is the story of Kivrin's sojourn in the past that captures the imagination of the reader. This is a stunning book that is totally gripping. The spellbound reader will definitely keep turning the pages of this wonderful book, which is clearly written by a master storyteller. Bravo!

Low Carb has long and positive past

I found this at a second hand store for $1 - the original price was $0.95! But it has been a great program for me. Simply stated, cut carbs of all kinds (except fiber) to 60 grams a day, and eat some protein 2-3 times a day. Easy, well defined. He says to do it in 6 meals a day, but I don't worry too much about that, and the weight is coming off.

One of the coolest parts of the book is that he outlines the history of low carb diets. He includes a reprint of a pamphlet from 1863 of low carb diet followed by a guy in England, and he mentions others. Funny how little has changed in medicine since 1965 when this little gem came out.

Buy it and enjoy.

Years Ahead of its Time!

SPI's DragonQuest really is a landmark role-playing game. It provided one of the first points-based character generation systems, where random stat rolling was reduced to a minimum - and provided a rich skill/profession system that still stands close scrutiny by the modern gamer almost 30 years later. The combat system betrayed the "hex and counter" wargaming heritage of the publishing company, but again provided an option rich subsystem for mayhem that still stands head and shoulders above the masses. The magic system was based on colleges - each themed to a specific "type" of magic, ranging from the mental, to the elemental, to the demonic (although the latter was removed from the 3rd edition rules). Magic was fun in the sense that a spell had a cast chance, that came with a possible "backfire" result if you were drastically unsuccessful.

The bottom line. This was, and still is, an excellent game - that still supports a flourishing on-line community. If you can find a copy, grab it, you'll be glad you did! It remains my favorite, not because of the rosy lens of 80's nostalgia but because it still is superb!

This is the book that got me hooked on the entire RPG genre. It is very well laid out and provides very clear instructions. Compared to AD&D, this would be a little complex. A wonderful book and game.

The Spirit Of Youth

I think that this is a fabulous childrens book about the life of a young child an how she grows up through life. Her vibrant youth starts in New York City where her father is a wealthy man and builds them a nice house. The book then continues to follow her childhood until she is at marrying age. I feel this book is a perfect childrens book and shows what life and spirit that children can have. Hattie's almost non-stop spunk characterizes how children lived back then and how important childhood is. The main theme in this story is the spirit and vibrance of youth.

In recent years a number of book awards have established to acknowledge those books which have special relevance to Jewish, African-American, Latino, Caribean and Asian-American cultures.

In part one (very short) of this book, background information about these various awards is given. This includes the awarding organization and the things that they look for.

In part two Ms. York has collected into this one reference book all of the books that are award winners and are honor or commended titles. Publication and brief summaries are provided for the titles. While all of this information may be available on the Internet, here it is contained in a quick and easy to reference manner.

The intended audience for the book includes librarians and library media specialists to use as a tool for selection and acquisition of high-quality books to increase diversity in library collections. Classroom teachers can use the book to locate worthy books to supplement classroom instruction.
