One of our clients recently hired a contract engineer from China and The New Lean Pocket Guide (Chinese Edition) is exactly the tool they needed to help the new engineer grasp the lean concepts. In our global economy, language can be such a huge barrier. Everyone else in the company was using the English version of the New Lean Pocket guide and to find the book with a Chinese version was a Godsend. The translation is absolutely accurate and the engineer now feels truly part of the team. When he returns to China, he's planning on using it to implement lean initiatives in there. The New Lean Pocket Guide has become the client's bible. It's outstanding; clear, direct, and comprehensive. We highly recommend it to all of our clients going lean.

Great for home schooling

I think that this book has been a life saver for our homeschool history needs. It is written at a level my 5th grader understands and sparks many conversations that I had not expected to have until high school history. It has sparked his interest to learn more about the people and places of history. I love the shorter sentences and all of the thinking questions. Even the chapters are short so we can take one step at a time. It defines words that he would have asked about in the margin and gives great pronunciations to difficult words and people's names. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to read history with their child

Library media consultants Ruth Toor and Hilda K. Weisburg present New on the Job: A School Library Media Specialist's Guide to Success, a compendium of tips, tricks, and techniques drawn from experience, gathered and presented for school librarians in general and school library media specialists in particular. Chapters cover how to secure a job, connecting with students and teachers, dealing with advances in technology, career ethics and standards, and much more. Written in plain terms, with numerous "write your answer in the blank" questions for personal insight (such as, "What is the procedure for opening blocked websites? Who has the authority to do so?" with a blank underneath so one can learn the answer and write it down for quick reference later). A "Key Ideas" summary reinforces the lessons of each chapter, in this enthusiastically recommended supplementary resource for library media specialists, sure to prove useful to veterans in addition to its target audience of career beginners.

New Testament Theology: Magnifying God in Christ

A first-class NT theology
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-15
This is certainly the newest and perhaps most comprehensive New Testament theology to come from the conservative/Evangelical camp. Other recent volumes include those by Achtemeier, Green and Thompson, (Introducing the New Testament, 2001); Marshall (New Testament Theology, 2004); and Thielman (Theology of the New Testament, 2005).

Older but still helpful volumes include those by Ladd (1974); Hasel (1978); Guthrie (1981); Morris (1986); and Caird and Hurst (1994). Of all these volumes, Schreiner's is certainly the most extensive, reaching nearly 1,000 pages.

Most NT theologies approach the task in a book by book examination. Some take a more topical/thematic approach. Schreiner combines the best of both worlds. He looks at major NT themes, such as God, the Kingdom, Christology, sin, salvation, eschatology, and so on, but does so by focusing on main author clusters, such as the Synoptics, or Luke-Acts, or Paul, or John, etc.

Thus all the main themes of the NT are capably dealt with, but the canonical structure to the NT is not lost. As to the centre of NT theology, Schreiner states his view in the opening lines: "NT theology is God-focused, Christ-centered, and Spirit-saturated, but the work of the Father, Son, and Spirit must be understood along a salvation-historical timeline; that is, God's promises are already fulfilled but not yet consummated in Christ Jesus" Indeed, the subtitle of this book is Magnifying God in Christ.

Schreiner is of course a leading NT scholar, and relatively youngish (54). He lectures at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and has penned a number of helpful volumes in the past, including an important volume on Pauline theology (2001), a major commentary on Romans (BECNT, 1998), and various volumes on issues in Pauline thinking.

Indeed, like Frank Thielman, he has written much on the place of the law in Pauline thought. His The Law and it's Fulfillment: A Pauline Theology of Law (1993) is an important contribution to this debate, as is Thielman's 1994 volume, Paul and the Law.

Thus his understanding of the place of the law in the whole of the NT is quite helpful, and his discussion on this vital topic - like that of other topics in this volume - is informed both by the latest scholarship, as well as pastoral concerns. Indeed, his examination of NT ethics is also very useful, dealing with how the NT writers inform us of how God's people are to live in God's world.

Theologically, Schreiner is conservative and moderately Reformed. But he is judicious in handling varying points of view, and does a good job of allowing the NT writers themselves to determine the flow of theology in this volume.

That he is not a hard-core Calvinist is evident in various ways, including his treatment of the warning passages in Hebrews. For example, he takes it that those being warned about falling away are in fact actual believers, and that they can indeed turn away from their salvation.

His conservatism is seen in various places, for example, in his treatment of women in the church and in the home. He takes the complementarian (or traditional) position here, as opposed to the egalitarian (or liberationist) view. Of course such controversial issues will result in differing opinions, but as mentioned, Schreiner is fair to his debating partners in these various discussions.

Altogether, this is really an outstanding volume, covering all the bases, and providing both theological detail as well as the big-picture framework. It is a solid work by a solid NT scholar, and well worth a careful read. Pastors, students and scholars alike will benefit greatly from this tremendous work.

Fantastic Resource!

Schreiner's NT Theology is simply excellent. He takes a thematic approach with God magnifying himself in Christ through the Spirit as the center of the NT. I found the thematic approach particularly helpful. Thielman is also a great resource, but the book by book approach reads more like a NT Intro text. Themes that were especially clear and helpful were Schreiner's work on righteousness, already/not yet (Part 1), Christology (most of the book), faith and obedience, and the Law in salvation history. I've only read chunks of Ladd, but if I could own only one NT theology, Schreiner's is the one I'd want to have.

Paul Zimmerman has an advantage over other profootball writers because of two facts. First he was a player, in college and in semipro ball; where he played on the line of scrimmage no less. And second his devotion to covering the game. There is no writer that covers football that has his historical insight into the game, and meticulous analysis of the strategy underlining it. Zimmerman, also known as Dr. Z to Sports Illustrated readers demonstrates this knowledge in his 1984 book The New Thinking Man's Guide to Pro Football. While football is often seen as a game of brutal force, and violence, beneath this are strategies and planning that make it seem more like organized chaos. Every running play to gain a few yards is planned carefully in blocking schemes, the reading of a defense by a quarterback if further appreciated when realizing the pressure put upon the man. Each position of a team is divided, and then broken down by Zimmerman. From the offensive line to the scouting department, he gives the reader a careful understanding of each section that makes up a team. While this book will appeal to the die-hards, it will also appeal to the casual fan; not only in what may be learned, but in the human element as well. There are characters throughout the book, from Conrad Dobler's maniacal play to Joe Don Looney's loony lifestyle. Zimmerman does not forget that while football is a carefully planned sport, it is also a game, and there are many characters over the years that are just that, characters. Also established is the dynamic nature of the sport to show how football is reactionary; where a style of play is established and then acted upon by opposing defenses and offenses, to create a sport that is in constant change. Unlike baseball, basketball, or hockey football is a kinetic sport that is prone to new directions and changes over time, changing in style of play due to minor details and this makes it wholly unique. No other writer has captured this than Paul Zimmerman in writing about football.

First rate handbook on using the media to promote social change

I use this book for a graduate course I teach called Media Advocacy and Social Marketing. It very clearly outlines the various strategies and techniques involved in promoting changes in public policy through the use of mass media, including the internet. My students find the information both intriguing and easy to assimilate.

Larry Wallack, the lead author, is a long-time practitioner of media advocacy and a recognized leader in the field. His earlier book, Media Advocacy for Public Health, is also very useful as a course text and I recommend both publications highly.

Excellent guide for advocates

Larry Wallack, Katie Woodruff and Lori Dorfman are recognized experts in media advocacy. This book was a textbook for my media communications course in a graduate school of public health. I would recommend this book for anyone who would like a better understanding of how to work with the media to support advocacy and policy issues, in any subject area. It incorporates a workbook style, with examples of press releases, letters, etc. It's a how-to for hands-on folks. There are also other books focusing on media advocacy, written by Wallack and Dorfman, that I would highly recommend. But News for a Change is an excellent starting point for anyone who needs the media to cover an advocacy/policy issue.

Essays by more than a dozen of the country's top media scholars, critics and journalists discuss how the corporate ownership of the media holds dangers to the American democratic process itself, from issues of standardization in program content and party lines to the demise of local interests and the nationalization of the news media itself. Recommended as critical reading for any college-level student of journalism, News Incorporated: Corporate Media Ownership And Its Threat To Democracy considers the underlying dangers in how the current news delivery system is structured and regulated, and how it could be fixed.

A must for the democratically minded

Elliot Cohen's new book, News Incorporated, is an extremely valuable contribution to contemporary discussions about the failure of the American media to promote American interests. The book is scholarly, but accessible; it is provocative but suitably practical. If you want to understand what's happening in America today, you need to read this book.

This is a wonderful book for beginning news journalists. The price is a sticking point, however. The cover is marked, "You asked ... We listened! A truly affordable workbook for your students!" A $60 workbook isn't exactly "affordable."

Rogers has a wonderful ability to communicate the essence of deadline writing and it is on display in this book. The exercises are incredibly helpful and it is evident that they sprang from the mind of someone with real-world journalistic experience. This is a must have for journalism students. There is nothing on the market right now that will teach them one of the most important and least taught skills: writing under deadline pressure.
