Review Date: 2008-07-09
I developed an appreciation for Handel's Messiah over 60 years ago, and to this day I listen to recordings of it frequently. While in college I became a participant, singing in the chorus, and have done so many times since. A while back I gave my vocal score to my daughter for her use, not realizing how much I missed having it at hand. Since I recently purchased a replacement I feel complete again as I refresh my readings of this great work, truly an all time classical composition.

The Messiah: An Oratorio Complete Vocal Music Score

Review Date: 2008-01-12
The Messiah is, by far, my favorite piece of classical music. It has been a Christmas tradition for me to attend singalong Messiah concerts for many years. This score has been the choice of the choral conductors and organizers of the concerts of which I have been a part. I bought this book to give to my son-in-law for Christmas, as part of a package that also included a recording of a radio program about the Messiah and Handel, and a CD of the music. He is an musician, so I knew he would enjoy it, and I wanted to provide him with material to share with my granddaughters, so they could also become acquainted with this great piece of music. He was very pleased to receive the gift.

Trapping Love

Review Date: 2007-06-10
Thaddeus Rutkowski's moving novel TETCHED chronicles the dilemma of a character who feels so unlovable that he tries to get women to agree to participate in his inept bondage sessions in order to be sure they will actually have sex with him. Beginning in the character's bizarre childhood, the novel gives an account of his life with an abusive, alcoholic father and a hardworking Asian mother who tries to help her children by quoting Chinese proverbs that seem to have little bearing on their problems. Horrifying though the events are, they are made palatable by Rutkowski's deadpan delivery and his unfailing ability to find elements of humor in them. I highly recommend this novel and will be on the lookout for other work by this author.

An edgy, twitchy tale about not fitting in

Review Date: 2006-01-31
Rutkowski's style may seem easy on the surface--a series of snapshot narratives related in a deadpan, matter-of-fact tone--but the scenes he chooses to evoke are very precise and focused, the way a photographer composes his images within a frame. This is concentrated angst, potent stuff, but with humor often peeking slyly through the keyhole. An edgy, twitchy book about not fitting in, and ultimately carving out one's own uniquely-shaped space.

Tetched leaves the door partially open on every bedroom in the house. Through small intimate vignettes, No-Restraints- Rutkowski's narrative leads readers down dark hallways and around shadowy corners to come up with a no holds barred portrait of coming of age in America in a biracial family. A sometimes humorous and always stimulating read.

A vibrant story of self- discovery and learning what it means to become a well-adjusted adult

Written by a finalist for an Asian American Literary Award, Tetched is a coming-of-age novel from the first-person perspective of a biracial narrator, who grows up in rural America yet escapes the repetition of country life for new experiences in the city, pursuing a college career. Far from his father's floundering struggles with alcoholism and unfulfilled art career, and his mother's confusing brand of Eastern wisdom, the protagonist struggles to live life on his own terms, a difficult task indeed - until he learns how to put the past in perspective. A vibrant story of self- discovery and learning what it means to become a well-adjusted adult.

Constructing Meaning Through Song
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-04-03
What is the role of music in advertising? When the music swells as a mother cradles her dying child in a film is it the music of the moment which captures our attention and emotions? These are the type of questions dealt with by Nicholas Cook in this intriguing journey into music's role in multimedia.

For something to be a medium does not mean that it is 'just' a medium. Cook rightly asserts that "the idea that anything can be 'just' a medium has... look precarious since the days of Marshall McLuhan"(pg. 261). Rather Cook upholds the value of the medium in the construction of meaning: "my argument [is] predicated on the assumption that media such as music, texts, and moving pictures do not just communicate meaning, but participate actively in its construction. They 'mediate' it." (pg. 261). According to Cook meaning in multimedia lies in the encounter between music and other media (pg. 270). If these ideas interest you, read this book.

Wonderful coming-of-age story for young teen & adult readers
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1999-08-30
Based on a true history of her husband's family (and illustrated by her artist husband, Gene Powell), Ms. Powell's first novel is a sensitive and gripping tale of a boy learing to deal with his personal fears and his place in society. He must guide a horse team sled loaded with lumber across a thawing lake. During the crossing, we learn of his history and why his family has treated him as an outcast.

It's particularly appropriate for pre-and teen readers, although adults will certainly enjoy it as well.

from website:
"Bob Chilcott and Susan Knight have searched the globe for vibrant, exciting music representing a wide range of choral traditions and styles-from a powerful arrangement of an old Armenian hymn to a percussive Dominican "villancico," a carol in the style of Nigerian art music, a Polish folk carol, a new arrangement of popular Canadian carol, and much more besides. Each piece may be sung in its original language or in English, and pronunciation guides are provided for those who wish to sing the original texts. This collection will help to refresh the repertoire of choirs the world over, with most pieces suitable for choirs of all sizes and abilities. 31 carols for mixed voices."

I'm addicted to V.C. Andrews now

Review Date: 2001-12-09
I must say that I was rather fascinated with this novel. I never took the oppurtunity to read any V.C. Andrews books and am glad to have done so. I feel that Eye of the storm is the best of The
Hudson Family Series. I feel Rain is a Heroin. To be as strong and faithful no matter what card she was dealt is so inspiring. Despite all her hardships she pulled thru. This was a real page turner for me. I read it in 3 hours. I was so impressed by this that I would strongly recommend any true V.C. Andrews fan to read this particular series if they haven't already. I'm now in the process of reading The End of the Rainbow. After that i feel that there are many more V.C. Andrews novels i'll move on to reading.

Much better than Lightning Strikes!

Review Date: 2003-10-27
After being disappointed with Lightning Strikes i was a bit skeptical with reading Eye of the Storm. This book was much better than the first two, focusing more on Rain than her family members. Alot of people in Rain's life were removed in this book, however, a few new people came into it. I was pleasantly surprised how quickly i read the book and look forward to finishing the series.
