Beverly Jenkins is awesome. Not only are her love scenes hot but you are given a wealth of historical knowledge regarding the reconstruction and subsequent jim crow period in our history. She is able to make you proud of our contributions and especially proud of our black men and the way they treat their families and women. She is great and the stories have plots that hold your interest and keep you wanting more.

Do as you say, and make me a believer....

Indigo was indeed a wonderful novel and I enjoyed reading every page. Reading this story made me want to hold on to the fact that true courtship/love still exists, and it will find you when you least expect it. I loved the way Dragon took it upon himself to make Hester feel completely assured and comfortable in him and her self. Because of situations beyond her control, Hester was left with a lifelong brand and unbeknownst to her, it would be that very imperfection that would become a loving moniker. A lesson in history and in love. There is triumph after every struggle, perserverence is key. Worth reading, you won't regret it.

Great Read!

This is a wonderful book. I was a little skeptical with the first few pages, but once the "Black Daniel" arrived I couldn't put it down. His and Indigo's battle of the wits kept me laughing and his persistent pursuit of Indigo was humerous and loving at the same time. This read will not disappoint you.

Beverly Jenkins' books are burning into my soul! I just can shake the stories. I would love to see Indigo and Through the Storm become a movie. How terrific would that be??? Galen is my hero and Hester (La Petite Indigo) is beautiful. I am definitely not a romance reader but my mother read Through the Storm first and after telling me the story, it was more like a history lesson. Needless to say, I have read this book and gone back and re-read the book many times over along with Through the Storm, Vivid, and Winds of the Storm. I love the story and I love how she creates strong, black, caring, affectionate men, she makes the brothers proud. I just want a whole series on the Vachons (Galeno and Hester) and the LeVeqs (Raimond and Sable, Archer and Zahra) and the Brats. I can't get enough. I have passed this book on to many of my friends (I owned two copies that I keep just for me) and they are all hooked on Beverly Jenkins now!!! I just need to know when is the mini-series coming to T.V. or the Big Screen. Tyler Perry, Oprah...we need some production on one of the most beautiful love stories ever written.

This novel brings you to the late 1700's and offers the drama of a modern romance with all the trials of war while in another era and country.
Twists and turns along with an easy/quick history of early Poland will keep the pages turning. Quickly went to buy the sequel before starting a new book b/c I was up in arms to find out the happenings of these compelling characters.

Couldn't put it down!

This book is a page-turner right from the beginning. I loved reading in this time period when men spoke to women like this (from page 23):

"See the two meadow flowers, the yellow and the violet? One is as different from the other as day from night. Yet who will say that one is more beautiful? Oh, a fool might. But only a fool... But do you know what may determine the desirability of one over the other?... The fragrance!"

Be still my heart! If you love that kind of subtle romance, you will love this book.

Anna shows such strength despite the overwhelming tragedies (one after the other) she faces in her young life. And even though she is a Countess, she is very down-to-earth and sensitive to those "under her" although it was a no-no for those of such high society. Her tenderness and innocense makes her so very likable.

The book goes back and forth between family life and what's politically going on in Poland during the late 1700s with the underlying romance throughout. You're always wondering about what will finally happen with Jan Stelnicki. At no point was this book boring!!!

I loved it.

I loved this book. There are so few novels on the market about Poland and Polish history (I don't know of any others!). This is indeed a rare find. The characters are well developed, the descriptions of locations and activities are wonderfully detailed and passionately written. The setting and content about the significant historical moments are woven in expertly. It really is a history lesson embedded in a very fast-moving and dramatic story. Yes, sometimes it may be a bit overly dramatic, but I really enjoy that rich, gossipy style. So cool that it is based on REAL journal entries. These characters come alive and will stay with you well after you are done reading. Great ending, too.

Looking forward to reading Chrimson Sky.

I found this historical fiction text to be absolutely enthralling! It has not only provided me with hours of enjoyable, page-turning reading, but has also given me great insight into my Polish ancestry and heritage. The strength, spirit, and heart of the Polish people--MY people--is wonderfully portrayed within the pages of this book. I'm so looking forward to receiving Mr. Martin's sequel, Against a Crimson Sky. I'm sure I'll not be disappointed!

...the sweeter the juice! T.Styles pens a tale that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat. This book was a quick, action packed, page turning read. It tells the story of four friends and their trials and tribulations. Will they remain friends? Will they turn on each other as they go thru growing pains? Will the lessons that life teach them allow them to see the growth that is evident of the lesson? Or will it all be for naught? Take this trot with the friends who may or may not learn that you reap what you sow!

I don't agree with the negative reviews of this book. I read a lot of fantasy and sci-fi and can promise you this is one of the best series.

Ruin Mist Chronicles is four books: Keeper Martin's Tale, Kingdom Alliance, Fields of Honor, and Mark of the Dragon. Elf Queen's Quest is the first dark path story, an alternate telling of the happenings in Ruin Mist.

The books have enjoyable characters. The plots have numerous twists and turns. I would highly recommend this series to any one even slightly interested in fantasy.

Robert Stanek's Ruin Mist books are fantastic. The books are available in adult and children's editions. For adults, the books are the ones in the Ruin Mist Chronicles:

Keeper Martin's Tale
Kingdom Alliance
Fields of Honor
Mark of the Dragon

Elf Queen's Quest is the first book in the Ruin Mist Dark Path, which is an alternate telling of the story. Read Elf Queen's Quest only if you enjoyed the previous four and can't wait for the new Lost Ages series.

If you've read the Ender books by Orson Scott Card, you probably understand how good an alternate telling of a story can be. In Stanek's Elf Queen's Quest, the differences in the telling are more subtle, but if you've read the other books, you can see the differences, and can guess at the direction of the dark path.

Anyone notice all the strange negative reviews of this and other books by this author?

Has anyone else noticed how many strange negative reviews/comments Stanek's books have received on Amazon and other places recently? They're all similarly worded and use similar phrasing. Most finish by basically telling people to go read George Martin instead. That's very strange. Even stranger is I found the same similarly worded negative reviews/comments when I want back through the old reviews of this book and Keeper Martin's Tale. Again, many reviews end by telling people to go read Martin or other authors but more times than not Martin is also included in the list.

Strange also how, Keeper Martin's Tale had three small reviews, basically one or two lines, in the 2 months after it was published and then a fourth review in April from "Bifford the Mage" that says this:

--
I've Been Had., April 7, 2002
There is something fishy going on here. This is nowhere near a 5-star book. The writing is extremely amateurish, with awkward phrasing, stilted language, and grammatical errors throughout. The style seems more suited for the 9- to 12-year-old crowd than adults... Save your money and skip this poorly-written book.
--

The second review of Elf Queen's Quest says this:

--
Not that good. April 11, 2002
I have read many times how people compare this book and "Keeper Martin Tales" to the "Ice and Fire" trilogy by G.G.Martin. Let me tell you something: Stanek's books are NOTHING like Martin's masterful works. "Elf Queen" and "Keeper Martin" are not even as good as "Wheel of Time" by Jordan, and I got sick of "Wheel" a long time ago! It is not as these are bad books, but certainly not what I expected after reading those glowing reviews.
--

This book, Elf Queen's Quest, had exactly 1 review when the above review was written. Many similarly worded reviews have been submitted since. Seems like some people (or more likely one person in particular) write bad reviews of books to get their kicks and push other authors, and that's just plain wrong. It takes a special kind of psychopath to keep writing bad reviews of an author's books under a variety of pseudonyms. Since this pattern has continued for the past 3 years here on Amazon, on forums, on other sites, this person or persons seem to still be at it, and that begs the question why?

The answer is probably this simple: Stanek has written a worthy epic fantasy and it had strong positive word of mouth. His books were probably pushing down some other book or author that was trying to a) break in to the market or b) compete in the market. So how do you kill the success of good books? You repeatedly bad mouth them on Amazon and other review sites, in a variety of forums and discussion boards post nasty comments, you get your friends and other people to do the same. Also, I'm not convinced it's George Martin fans doing this. Martin may just be the point and shuffle scapegoat.

Problem is these books are good, and they have continued on, but modestly and not with the success they started with. When I first saw this book and Keeper Martin's Tale, both were on the Amazon SciFi bestseller list. They remained on the list from about Feb 2002 to about Oct 2002 and then dropped off after several months of dirty tricks and negative publicity campaigning. There can be no doubt the dirty tricks and outright lies abouth these books have had their affect. They've tarnished the image and reputation of a good author, and probably ensured that the success of whatever competing book or author was trying to make it.

I picked up this book and the others in the series when I saw the same dirty tricks being used to harm sales of this author's books on Audible. At Audible, it was the same story. I saw this author's books on the bestseller list from about March 2005 to early October. The same dirty tactics of flooding the books with negative reviews, bad mouthing the books on discussion formums, and elsewhere was used to knock the book down. I haven't seen it on the bestseller list since. I guess it's mission accomplished for the dirty tricksters who for whatever reasons don't want this author's books to be successful. Problem is, these are good books and they continue on because of this, but the author will probably never get the critical success he deserves.

I read a lot of fantasy and sci-fi, and I can promise you that this series of books is among the best. This tale takes place mostly in the Kingdoms and the Reaches, lands of men and elves. The history of these kingdoms is expertly blended into the plot, and you effortlessly become emersed into the world. I can't overstate the skill with which the author draws the reader into his world. It feels as if this land, with its people, traditions and history is as real as our own. The series is supported to be four books - Keeper Martin's Tale, Kingdom Alliance, followed by The Fields of Honor and The Mark of the Dragon. Elf Queen's Quest is a retelling of the story in what the author calls The Dark Path.

A Significant Achievement and a series that deserves more praise and understanding.

Stanek has made and continues to make significant contributions to fantasy. He had a vision of a world with alternate histories and he put these alternate histories down in print in the form of alternate paths for readers - a novel idea of pure genius. Original ideas that good always are copied (and so this novel idea has been copied), regardless the genius and the implementation of this novel idea is hard to deny.

Stanek writes openly about the dark and light paths through the story. Elf Queen's Quest represents the start of the dark path. Keeper Martin's Tale represents the start of the light path. This was clear in everything I read about the early releases of both books, and should have been clear to early reader such as those 1-star reviews have been plastered at the top of this book's product page for almost six years now. Such reviews or not only unfair, they are tacky.

As others have said, the proper reading for adult readers of this sequence is Keeper Martin's Tale, Kingdom Alliance, Fields of Honor, and then Mark of the Dragon. Elf Queen's Quest is meant to be read last as a start to the dark path. In the years since this was released, I have waited expectantly for the sequel dark path books. I can only hope Stanek will listen to fans and not naysayers and soon publish the dark path sequels.

This is a fantasy series that renewed my faith in fantasy. It has made a new fantasy lover out of me, and every fantasy reader should give it a chance. Overall, this is a very impressive series with depth and realism.

Ruin Mist Chronicles is an excellent series, but you need to read the books in proper order. It goes Keeper Martin's Tale, Kingdom Alliance, Fields of Honor, Mark of the Dragon. The Ruin Mist Dark Path if you've read it, provides an alternate telling of the story of Ruin Mist. I have an original edition of Keeper Martin's Tale and Elf Queen's Quest. Both begin with a preface that explain this, but a friend of mine who got the books recently has a different edition and there's no preface.

What the Keeper Martin's Tale preface says is:

In 15 BD, the Watcher, Xith, is recorded as saying that "History belongs to the teller and is only as reliable as the teller's recollection of it." This is the truth of the matter, and why Keeper Martin, head of the lore keepers, chose to pen his own version of the histories of Ruin Mist before and after the return of Dalphan the Wanderer. Through Keeper Martin's gathering of history from various individuals, the story of Ruin Mist is retold in these pages. Keeper Martin would like you to think that his version of the history is the only truthful and correct account but then again, history belongs to the teller and is only as reliable as the teller's recollection of it.

The Elf Queen's Quest preface doesn't tell where this version of the story originates. The preface is about Queen Mother and the book's prologue does begin with Seth, so that may be a hint.

If you read and liked the original 4, this is a good follow up, but it's not a sequel series.

I use this book as a way to teach my first graders describing words/adjectives. Each page in the story as at least 2 describing words for the kids to identify such as color, shape, and feeling words. The kids then draw their own monsters (I give them wiggly eyes) and writing to share. A fun activity for sure!

This book has easy to remember text and is perfect for reading aloud. Children can "read" along and feel proud that they have power over the monster. My co-workers and I have used this book in preschool, PreK, and even younger classrooms.

Reading this book aloud is beneficial because it helps children learn the connections between pictures and words. It also shows them that reading is fun, and can be a starting point for a lifetime of reading.

My daughter received it for Xmas when she was 1 year old, and she's loved it ever since. I think she has always understood that it was pretend, and she enjoyed being in charge of the monster.

As I often (probably too often) do, I just checked the ranking of MY young reader's novel, "Hubert Invents the Wheel," against others in its category and was delighted to find "Mad Scientists' Club" one slot of ahead of "Hubert." What great company to be in!

40 years ago, I read this paperback so many times that I wore the cover off and had to re-attach it with duct tape. I didn't realize it at the time, but Brinley gave me a HUGE push in the direction of my current writing career, by combining highly accurate and detailed scientific know-how with crackerjack tales of suspense, action, and humor.

I dusted off my copy of MSC a few years ago and was astonished by how up-to-date it still felt. Much of the scientific equipment mentioned is still used today (gastroscopes, thermocouples) -- one only wonders what Brinley would've had to say about the Internet!

Like several other reviews, I first read this book in a Scholastic Book Club edition as a kid, which I enjoyed and kept. I somehow later found the second book as well.

Now I've replaced them with these new hardback editions, and can now read the 'new' (to me) volumes.

As a scout, I also liked the stories where the club was shown to be Explorers. And, as a long time viewer of the Wonderful World of Disney on Sunday nights, when they showed an adaptation of one of the stories, I knew where they got the story from (which I was able to verify as an adult).

I loved these books as a boy, and I still enjoy them now. Yes, the science is a bit dated in a few places, and yes a few of the stories don't stand the test of time quite as well as others. However, the fact remains that these books mix fun, curiosity and scientific exploration in a way that is still very appealing. Get these books for your kids and for yourself!

In fifth grade we were introduced to an illness called AIDS. We also learned about a boy named Ryan White. I took an interest to this story because I have an illness called diabetes and have to deal with how different people react and treat me because of it. Just like Ryan and AIDS diabetes is not contagious and there are no know ways to prevent or cure it. I have heard many different reactions when they find out that I have Diabetes. The most commom being "Did you eat too much sugar or something?" Most of the time I just laugh at this and explain that you have no control over getting Diabetes. I took an interest in school that year and by doing so I found myself a role model...Ryan White.

When I was young I remeber a copy of People magazine that my mom had lying around with Ryan White on the cover. For some reason I always took an interest to him, and his life, and all the article that I could find on him. In high school I remeber reading part of it to do an exta credit project. Finally 2 year out of high school I decided to reread the story of his life. It is amazing how people really are. It really hit home, not living too far from Kokomo, Indiana where he was from, that people in my community would treat people this way. It is also amazing how much determination he had to be who he was and not let anyone or anything get in the way. This book is great!!!! Everyone should read it and put themselves in this families shoes!!

Today is World AIDS Day and each year I remember my childhood friend, Ryan White. His sister and I were both Rollerskaters and skated in the same skating rinks. Knowing Ryan personally and having his book for years now, it is still a story that resonates with me. It is true, thoughtful, and in his own words.

I'll never forget the hatred the spewed from the city of Kokomo against him. It was such a devastating blow to his well being. Not only did he have this death sentence, but the entire town was treating him worse than what you would treat a pig going to slaughter. I am not joking. I remember seeing him at the skating rink one day, it was a time when he wasn't as sick so he was able to be a kid. I went up to him to give him a hug because I hadn't seen him in so long and he said, "You want to hug ME?" He was shocked that someone would want to touch him. That's how bad it was.

Read his book. He is the reason people with AIDS are accepted now. This friend of mine had more courage than anyone I have ever met.

I read this book upon entering seventh grade. Ryan's story was so empowering and so honest that I often feel the need just to sit down and read a chapter by random. Everytime I read it I cry. This auto- biography has inspired me to help in the relief and research for AIDS. I have done reports on the disease and Ryan and teachers often comment about how passionate I am about the subject. This book changed the way I veiw life; a treasure that should'nt be wasted. Thank you Ryan.

Not one of the worst books I've ever read but pretty close. Sorry I bought it and am not passing it on to friends. Perhaps it was the subject matter that first intrigued and in the end alienated me but I had to force myself to finish because I couldn't believe the plot. I kept hoping for some relevant message. Mary Magdalene, the original feminist and Mary the Mother of God, the worn out, bitter, stay at home Mom? I won't even try to describe her take on Jesus. Not my cup of nectar. I'll certainly make every effort to keep this book a "secret".

It's embarrassing to say this, but I was told to read this book by a friend who gushed about it. Normally, I run away from books that are gushed about. But I had to read it. She stood over me until I did. Now it's my turn to gush. Read this book. If you're looking for everything in a book: a great read, beauty, real characters, adventure, action, secrets, and deep meaning, well, you've found it. Now I'm gushing.

Too convenient explanations for my liking

Though the cover states "What the DaVinci Code only hinted at, this brings to life" is only partially true. Yes, it shows Mary Magdalene as Jesus's companion and intellectual peer, but no, it doesn't reveal any more of their relationship. In fact, it shrouds in diffucult prose what their relationship was, how they spent their time together (other than walking everywhere silently), and how they collectively orchestrated Jesus's resurrection to fulfill prophesy and give the people the Messiah they so desperately needed and sought. Through Mary's voice, it turns the miracles, the parables, and the events described in the Bible as basically misunderstood by the disciples, and therefore calls into question their historical and spiritual validity. This viewpoint, though creative and well-composed, made it all too convenient for me. I'm no Biblical scholar, but I do know some of the pivotal points in the Gospels, and what's more miraculous to me is how Mary Magdalene, whether clothed as herself or as John the Less, is at every one of them and has an explanation as to how they each came to be that's at odds with what's recorded in the gospels. I would agree with an earlier reviewer who found the ending a disappointment. I won't go into it, in case there's a reader out there who doesn't want me to give it away, but be prepared - it will let you down. DaVinci code went further than this, without going into all the details of Mary's (Miriamne's) life. Read it for the interesting perspective, but don't read it for salacious and informed details regarding Mary's and Jesus's relationship.

I can't count the times I cried reading this book. Or the times I laughed. Or the times I wondered at how the author made such perfect sense of all the stories, interpretations, arguments, historical events, warring religious factions, as well as getting under the skin of each and every rich and delicious character. My understanding of what might very well be a true "Truth" as I read got clearer and clearer and if I wasn't crying or laughing, I was going aha! yes! could be! why not? never thought of it that way! wow!

The theology is brilliant. The philosophy is brilliant. But it's also a brilliant read. This is a historical novel so it has all that those who read historical novels could want: an Alexandria, Egypt when the Great Library still beckoned, the Holy Land when the temple was the center of Jewish belief, Rome when Tiberius was emperor. It has adventures and quests and love and despair and thrill and danger and derring-do and, best of all, Meaning. The story means something that will stay with you long long after you close the book.

I've read a few reviews that loved the book but said they had a little trouble at first with the style of writing. But that's perfect too. It's like reading Gone With the Wind, the King James version. It's literature on a high level but in no way does this mean "difficult." It means this is a real writer telling a real story that needs to be told.

New Testament discredited

Although well written, this book takes all the writings of the New Testament regarding Jesus the Christ and his followers as not only ordinary, but, provides a story line that discredits any miraculous happenings, including the resurrection of Jesus. The book provides information on the times and geographical areas mentioned in the New Testament and develops the personalities of various followers of Jesus in ways that are most interesting. However, I would caution anyone planning on reading this book to know that all miraculous events will be given a non-miraculous context.

More of the same from Jude Watson. The series is actualy intended for younger readers but I find the stories on an adult level. This book starts off where the last book finished and concludes the Merrida/Daan story ,with a twist!
All in all a lovely short read.

My First SW book! Jude Watson is truly talented.

I read this book a few years ago because I had just seen Episode III in theatres and I was interested in anything Star Wars. At the time I did not realize thet this book was the sixth book in the series and as soon as I finished this book, I went back and started with number 1. Anyway, I LOVED this book. It made Obi-Wan my favorite character and even the sub-charaters were great. The relationship between Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan is truly special and this book will give you chills. I can't wait to see if/when/how Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan's relationship is mended. Even though this is a short and simple read, this book is great for any age. The emotion in this book was so well described and portrayed. I recommend this whole SERIES to anyone who has the faintest interest in Star Wars or good books in general.

I am liking this series. I read the first 5 books last year, and started again just this week. I am a nut when it comes to reading a series in order, so I wanted to start with these books to see how Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon interact together before venturing into the prequels and follow-up novels to the movies.

This series is set towards young readers, but I find the story on an adult level. A good and easy read for someone wanting a short story.

Jude Watson brings to life the choices we face everyday. It shows how Obi-Wan Kenobi had to mkae one deceision between his home and when his friends on Melida/Daan needed him most.
When his friend is murdered and all his other friends, except two who remain loyal to him, turn into his enemies. He has no where to go and his former Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn isn't availible to protecthim, Obi-Wan must learn to be on his own with no one to help him.

Overall, I've greatly enjoyed the Jedi Apprentice series. It's not Harry Potter, but it gets the job done. Defenders of the Dead was a highlight, with an ending that left this jaded, cynical adult gasping with shock.

Unfortunately, The Uncertain Path leads to too much boredom. Obi-Wan mopes and Qui-Gon sulks, while the Youth on Melida/Daan regress into the children that they are. A few things salvage the book. Yoda giving Qui-Gon a chewing out (sorry, "Yoda a chewing out giving Qui-Gon, hmmmm?"), a touching scene with Cerasi's father, and the lack of quick resolution to the Obi-Wan/Qui-Gon conflict. Hope remains high for book 7.

Helaine and Score travel to the nightmare planet of Zarathan, in search of their kidnapped friend Pixel. It's a place where a person's nightmares and fears become reality, and to fall asleep means certain death. John Peel adds some new twists into this installment in the Diadem series by adding some elements of horror with a little science fiction thrown in. Very well done.

This whole series was a hit, it kept me reading and since it abruptly ends at this book (#6) I've been reading the 6 books over and over again, hoping for a change in heart by the author and a real ending, mind you that not rushing an ending in one book would be nice. Yes it is good for us, the readers, to use our imaginations a bit, but this was a complete cliff-hanger. The imagination/creativity is breath taking, never a cheezy moment. Mainly this book takes the story more towards an fantasy/horror story plot. Pixel is in trouble and of course Score/matt and renald/heliene jump right in to save him.... there seems to be little chance for sucsess.... what will happen?

The Diadem series has been my favorite book since I was ten years old. I am now fifteen and still remember almost every little detail. To bad he finished the series so abruptly, right?

Then again, he didn't. John Peel has written the seventh book and is still working on book eight. The only reason why the series is not sold in stores is because the publishing companies refuse to publish the new books, saying that it did not sell well enough to make more, and they discontinued the already published ones.

I found a website that has a petition that you can sign to put the books back on the market as well as the seventh and eighth. The site is:
