This is a great book about Johnny's professional life. It is mainly a pictorial book, it contains lots & lots of pictures, copies of documents, copies of hand-written song lyrics, and more. It contains some commentaries about Johnny that were written by others. Plus, the main thing, it contains Johnny's last interview. This is a great book about a great American Music Legend!!!

FOR THOSE OF US WHO FOLLOWED JOHNNY CASH FROM ALMOST DAY ONE, THIS IS POSSIBLY THE MOST PERSONAL AND MOST FULFILLING BOOK EVER DONE ABOUT HIS LIFE. BILL MILLER, A CLOSE FRIEND OF JOHNNY'S SINCE CHILDHOOD, HAS PUT TOGETHER A SCRAPBOOK.COLLAGE OF THE VERY BEST OF JOHNNY'S LOVING AND CARING PERSONALITY. IT'S LIKE GOING BACK IN MY OWN CHILDHOOD, TO THE FIRST TIME I HEARD THE GREAT MAN SING. THAT VOICE, IT WAS LIKE NOTHING WE'D EVER HEARD BEFORE. LATER, THANKS TO MY UNCLE PLAYING ON VENUE'S WITH JOHNNY, I ALSO GOT TO MEET HIM, AND ALWAYS HE WAS KIND, CONSIDERATE AND TO A YOUNG PERSON, OVERWHELMING.

BILL SENT MY WIFE AND I A COPY AND IT'S JUST A TREASURE. EVEN IF YOU BECAME A FAN LATER ON, THIS IS A BOOK THAT GOES BEYOND ALL THE OTHERS. IT'S LIKE JOHNNY HIMSELF LEFT YOU SOME OF HIS PERSONAL BELONGINGS AND GAVE YOU A GOING AWAY PRESENT. WE LOVE THIS BOOK AND TREASURE IT AND THANK BILL MILLER, HIMSELF AN OBVIOUSLY KIND AND LOVING MAN. BUY IT, YOU WON'T BE SORRY AND 25 YEARS FROM NOW THIS ONE BOOK WILL BE THE ONE EVERYONE TRIES TO FIND. IT'S SO GREAT!

Excellent tribute

I am a legally blind man and and I usually get my books to listen to through the library, but after I saw the movie walk the line I felt I had to know more about the ledgend of Cash through an audiobook if I could find one. I was lucky to find this one. I love the way Kris Kristofferson reads the book. Since he was a friend of cash's, he put feeling into the reading like no other person can. Through the author's extensive research on Cash, I found out things I never knew about him. The Movie is good, but if you really want to know who Cash is, just by this and Listen to Kristofferson tell you about his friend. The man in black.

I learned a lot about Johnny Cash, as well as people like Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, and many others who were the ones that generated so much buzz about music in the 1950's. Toward the end of the book, I was sad because I knew that it would speak of his death. I found myself not wanting to hear about it, because I had loved learning about his life so much.

My favorite story in the whole book was about a prayer he prayed at dinner. His dinner guest recalled the story:

Cash prayed and said, "... and we thank you Lord for this food, and we ask that you would bless it to our body. We pray these things in Jesus' name, Amen. When he finished praying he winked at me and said, "I still miss the drugs though."

It is precisely that juxtaposition of piety and weakness that I think I love about him. It reminds me of another man who is known well for his writing when he said:

I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do ... What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?

In case you didn't catch that, the other man to whom I referred is the Apostle Paul. He happened to be one of Cash's favorite people for obvious reasons. I have wondered why I am so enamored by people like Johnny Cash and Paul; these men of such conviction, but at the same time so open about their transgressions. I think it is because they knew themselves well, and they never allowed the good in them to elevate them to a place where they could look down at others. They knew the darkness, and that it was always waiting if they would just relent and turn to it.

Cash turned to it a lot. However, like Paul, he also said:

Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!

At the end of his life, after June Carter died he hung around for a few months more. He could barely walk, was in massive pain, and was eighty percent blind. In this state, however, he still had the Bible enlarged big enough so he could read it. Others spoke about his love of Jesus, his kindness, his generosity, and his faithfulness to June.

So many want to be cynical about people who struggle, fall, get up, and fall again. They like to point and yell to expose someone else's flaws. I am more convinced that the ones who yell the loudest are the ones who are the most scared of having their flaws exposed.

One of my favorite lines in music comes from a song sung by Cash. It was written by Bono and performed with U2 (yeah, I know big surprise). The line goes:

I went out there,
In search of experience,
To taste and to touch,
And to feel as much,
As a man can,
Before he repents.

Isn't that all of our stories? I know it's mine. I also know that it is mine everyday. I walk around, and like a little kid test the boundaries of God's love. Some days, I may not go far, other days I may feel restless and I just want to run. Yet each time I return home to talk with God I find myself speaking the words of Paul:

Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!

I usually don't read many biographies, but I received this one for Christmas one year since I am a huge Johnny Cash fan. I was glad to see that this book was very well written and also a very easy read. I knew it was going to be good when the first chapter was pretty emotional, as it starts off with June Carter Cash dying. The book also focuses well on some key moments in Johnny Cash's life that made the most significant difference - the first being the death of his brother, Jack, and the others that revolved around June. Like other reviewers have stated, Walk The Line used a lot of moments from the book and I would recommend reading the book as well as watching the movie. I think what was great about Johnny Cash, and what we can all relate too, is how open he was with how he was a sinner and how he had made a lot of mistakes (ie. drugs, affairs, etc.), but he changed his ways when he fully committed himself to Jesus and his faith. I think this book can be a great tool to those who have struggled and have difficult pasts because Cash showed that it doesn't matter what you have done, that you have forgiveness and that you can always start over. Great message and this book has a lot of interesting and funny stories that will want to make you laugh, smile, shake your head, or make you feel sad. Steve Turner has done a great job and had made me rethink biographies. If you're a Johnny Cash fan, this a must-have!

Informative and In-Depth! A Good Biography to Start Learning About the Life of Johnny Cash.

Before I read this book, THE MAN CALLED CASH, by Steve Turner, from 2004, I had also read the 1997 book called CASH: THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY (with Patrick Carr). They both cover similar ground. The 1997 book seems more homey, like Johnny Cash is talking to you, but this book, by Steve Turner, seems more accurate.

Having know Johnny and his family for over a decade, author Steve Turner was actually hired to help write another autobiography, but June and Johnny died unexpectedly, and the book turned into an in-depth research research project, instead of just helping Johnny write with decent grammar, or whatever it takes two authors to do with an AUTObiography.

Both books seem to be equally long in content, though the page counts and page sizes differ between the hardcover of this book and the small paperback of THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY book that I read.

Though both books cover a lot of the same incidents from Johnny's life, this book, THE MAN CALLED CASH, features some highly interesting coverage of the last living days of June and Johnny, before they both passed on in 2003. There is also plenty of more in-depth coverage of events told in THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY, and there are also plenty of events from Johnny's life that are not mentioned in the 1997 autobiography. I recommend that you read both books, actually.

The author also points out that since he had to do research, instead of just typing out whatever Johnny told him, he has discovered that Johnny Cash never had trouble telling a good story, or making a good story even better! For example, Johnny Cash has written and talked about how rowdy he was in the Air Force, fighting with the military police, etc., but Steve Turner points out that the people who were in the Air Force with him don't remember any of that kind of rowdiness from Johnny, who never got into much trouble, and would have been widely known on the air base if he HAD fought with the guards, etc. This book also tells about how Johnny would play music with other airmen in his dorm, and Johnny was the worst of the bunch, learning a lot from the others!

There are many interesting b/w photos, although mostly small, but in high quantity! There is a photo of his brother Jack, whose childhood death affected Johnny for the rest of his life.

This book also has a chronology of major events in Johnny's life, and a discography of his primary releases, which is good to use as a shopping list, for me.

This book does have some distracting typos that I hope get fixed in future printings. On one page the same sentence appears twice in a row. In the Chronology, the death of his father, Ray Cash, appears twice on the list, in 1985 (correct), and then again in 1993 (incorrect). This is unfortunate, but these two are the worst distractions that I found without even trying.

It is also interesting to see how the movie WALK THE LINE compares to what is contained in both of these books! For instance, both books say that June Carter never really met or toured with Johnny until he was a big, established star, years into his music career, while the movie gives me the impression that they met on Johnny's first fledgling tour.

THE MAN CALLED CASH gives information about the the saw accident and his brother Jack. This book says that actually there was another 12 year old boy there, who witnessed the event, and Johnny suspected him of being involved in a bad way, though none of the adults thought so at the time, or ever! Both books mention how Johnny would see Jack appear in his dreams for the rest of his life, always a few years older than Johnny at whatever the age Johnny dreamed the appearance.

This book talks about Johnny's friendship with the evangelist, Billy Graham. I personally enjoy Johnny's Gospel albums and projects, but I am a little bit disappointed over the wasted years of drug abuse and family neglect from Johnny, who thought of himself often as a lost Christian, but a Christian none the less. What do you think about that?

The Bible says, "What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice." -- Philippians 1:18. Using this Bible verse as a model, it tells me that Johnny Cash's Gospel works, as good as they are, are also totally legitimate as long as they correctly preach the Word of God--regardless of the depths of sin and abuse that Johnny heaped upon himself and his loved ones.

As long as Jesus Christ is being preached correctly, the sins of the messenger do not negate the message itself (and we are all sinners, just not as extreme as Johnny was, I suspect)! I do not and cannot condone his sinful abuses, (though I have done most of them myself, before I got Saved 8 years ago), but I will let God judge his own servant, and I will continue to enjoy the many beautiful Gospel projects which Johnny Cash was always eager and happy to work on!

GOSPEL GLORY is my favorite Johnny Cash Gospel CD, so far. His movie, THE GOSPEL ROAD, is on DVD and is also really cool! My favorite Gospel project from Johnny Cash is his spoken word reading of the entire NEW TESTAMENT on 16 CDs, very affordably priced from amazon.com, and all three of these items come highly recommended by me!

I can recommend both of these books for anybody who enjoyed the WALK THE LINE film.

Bottom line: read CASH: THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY for a fun time spent with Johnny Cash in his own words, then read this book, THE MAN CALLED CASH, for the REAL story on how many of those stories actually went down!

Johnny Cash's talent for being a wordsmith doesn't stop at songwriting; he has written a great book that tells how Saul became Paul. One of the most interesting characters in the Bible. A man who set out persecuting Christians became one the most prominent leaders in the 'Way' in the New Testament. Cash discusses Paul's life in very detailed examination of the psyche of this tormented man. It is a page turner and gives far more understanding of one of the most famous apostles in the Bible.

This book did what The Shack did not do. It told a story of a biblical character based upon scripture accurately and on parts of the story that were fictionalized, were not so far-fetched or seemingly unbelievable. Mr. Cash tells the story of Saul/Paul and his redemption and awakening on the Damascus Road by the Man in White (God).
The story begins with a brief introduction into Sauls (temple) life while during the time he rejected Jesus and condemed anyone of the Nazarenes followers to jail or death. It proceeds to the conversion scene on the Damascus Road, and then on to Pauls instruction to teach and preach the word of god (the New Testament) unto all of the world.
Mr. Cash brings to life a real Paul, a real Damascus, a real Jerusalem, and so on. I felt like I was there while reading about Pauls journies. This was such a wonderful book. I feel Mr. Cash has stayed as true to following biblical scripture and as close as he could to keep his story of Paul both accurate and meaningful, and what an accomplishment. Thank God Mr. Cash didn't make God a black woman, Jesus a middle-eastern man, and the Holy Spirit an Asian woman just to tell a story about them while they all sat around and ate pancakes. While he would have been free to do so, I believe it cheapens Christianity severely in the eyes of someone who may find it difficult to believe in God to begin with or cause even more confusion at the very least. Mr. Cash did a GREAT job with his story of Paul and the Man in White so you won't have to worry about that kind of foolishness with this story. Great quality with this one. If you can find a copy (hardcover preferably) get it. You will see why I recommend the hardcover when you get a close look at it and feel it with your fingers. Sounds wierd, but trust me.

I checked this out from the library for my husband; he loved it so much I planned to buy it for him. Meanwhile my father-in-law came for a visit and loved it so much he wouldn't put it down... So, I ended up buying two books; one for each of them. Neither could put it down and said how they would want to read it over and over. My two favorite men in my life absolutely LOVE this book. Also, it is a great add to his growing collection of Johnny Cash books and music. It adds an important part of who is was. Also, it was very interesting to find out what an educated Christian he was; in detail.

JR Cash was one of the most fantastic men to ever live, and he gave the world the gift of his voice; through song, tv and now this: an audio recording of the NKJV bible.
I got this for Christmas and it really helps make reading the bible easier. Cash has the perfect voice for this, and it isn't all flashy, Johnny makes it fantastic without all that Hollywood crap.
I never thought I would own an audio bible until i saw this, and now I will never even have to think of getting another!

This is a great audio Bible. No distractions, just the Word of God being read aloud. I find it odd to have a Bible that is covered with pictures of Johnny Cash - I got it because I wanted an audio Bible that was not dramatized and did not have music. All the other voices I previewed sounded really annoying to my ears. Johnny Cash had an excellent reading voice and is easy to listen to.

Here's what absolutely amazes me about Johnny Cash -- and the reason that, after more than 30 years in journalism, I have to admit I still have such an emotional reaction to this country singer -- is that his famous struggles with temptation and faith have directly crossed over to the next generation.

There's something as honest as a razor blade about Cash. His "man in black" garb clearly wasn't merely a costuming choice for his stage act. His concern for the poor and marginalized clearly wasn't just another star's hobby. In fact, I went back and purchased DVDs of some of Cash's TV shows, because I'm so intrigued by this man, this artist, this man of faith.

I own dozens of Bibles and a half dozen audio Bibles -- but it's the Cash disks that keep winding up in my van with me when I'm traveling. There's nothing flashy in this recording, which was done back in the 1990s and doesn't have any of the Hollywood special effects that are popular in current audio Bibles.

This is the New King James Version so some of the phrases sound a little stilted to our ears, unless we've stayed with this majestic old rendering throughout our lives. But that's not a bad thing. I'm not a King James reader, on a regular basis, but there's something about the poetry of this particular translation -- coming to my ears in that voice of The Man in Black, knowing some of the incredible spiritual journey that he pursued through these years -- and the overall effect is mesmerizing.

This is the best and most easy to listen to reading of the New Testament I have ever heard. The soul of the man and the Spirit of God come through with every breath. A real Rhema experience!

He promised his Mum he would do this, she never heard it but before he died he kept that promise. Praise God that he did. For fans of Johnny this is an unmissable experience. For fans of the Holy Bible it too should not be missed. A real double blessing for me!

This is a great way to listen to the Bible. Johnny's chill tone and deep weathered voice makes this one of the best and most enjoyable audio bibles around. I would imagine that many of the most hesitant to bible listening could soften up to the surprise of Johnny's voice reading the scriptures. Cash's coolness, rough, and relatable history that many of us can identify with, helps most anyone have "ears to hear." It is awesome how Jesus can change anyone so remarkably. Johnny Cash's testimony of his radical change by Jesus' words can be read about in his book, "When A Man Comes Around".

No frills or fancy workings, just plain old Johnny Cash reading the New King James version of the New Testament. It's straight-forward and understandable, delivered in a matter-of-fact tone that leaves interpretation open to your own mind. Johnny Cash does his best to read without flair and dramatics, allowing the words to speak for themselves.

I enjoy unwinding after a long day by throwing on some headphones and relaxing to the soothing words of JC.

this set was everything i could have hoped for. it was amusing that someone reviewing this product would describe Johnny Cash's reading voice as "wooden" ... have they never heard him speak or sing ? if you have heard his voice you know what to expect. personally i find his voice rich, comfortingly real, and ideally suited to a project such as this

there is no annoying music in the background, which is ideal for people who suffer from diminished hearing, like me, or people who find such unwelcome additions to be nothing more than a distraction

his reading is often described as slow, but i think it might be better described as casual - about the speed he spoke in public or on TV : he typically seemed unhurried when he spoke, but having a "script" allowed him to talk faster than i'd anticipated. his cadence is not too fast, just faster than i had been led to believe

the books are broken up into chapter-length files (important if you wish to rip to MP3 files as i've done) and sometimes span from one CD to another (important if you're considering getting this for an elderly person who might need to search for the next CD, as well as possibly complicating the operation of a CD player for a person with visual limitations)

this is a wonderful product and i would gladly purchase it again. the only "improvement" i can suggest is offering an MP3 version for people who may lack the technical ability to convert the CDs themselves (they are Legion)

Greetings. May I congratulate you for finding your way to this book and to these few words.

This title, I STILL MISS SOMEONE, if from one of my favorite Cash-penned songs and the book was/is published by a very small mom/pop outfit in Nashville. They (the publisher) have no promotion or marketing or publicity savy, to speak of when promoting a book like this, so it has just layed here in obscurity.

This book, although it contains the input of over forty close Cash associates and a foreword by the Grahams (Ruth and Rev. Billy), has NEVER been reviewed by any press. In fact, the Nashville media didn't even give it one line. Small publishers suffer this snub, and in the end, so did this tribute book. Lost in the larger shuffle of all things Johnny Cash.

The only folks that know about this book are folks like you, that have searched, surfed and stumbled across it or maybe found it after hearing about it word-of-mouth.

To the point, if you get this book, I STILL MISS SOMEONE, and are not moved by it, touched by it, or feel it is more than worth the price, I will personally refund your purchase price. (hughwaddell@comcast.net)

Yes, I believe in this book with all my heart and soul!!!! In the few interviews about the book that happened last year (2005), I stated the same challenge, and have not been asked to refund one dime, yet. In spite of all the review snubs, the book stands on its own simple merit.

So screw the tiny publisher, the snubby-dub media and the self-serving Nashville "pompasses". This book does not need to be hyped or pumped by critics, anyway. I swear to you that you will enjoy this look at Johnny the Cash through the eyes and hearts of people who knew him best... his friends and family.

Thank you and God Bless!

All of us who followed the music and life of Johnny Cash;knew from the beginning of his musical career in the laste 50's that there was something special about this man. He came to most of us by his music and shows but we always knew he was a man who first of all knew and loved his God. The name Pilgrim was often associated with him;but the name Disciple would be just as fitting. I have followed ,listened to and read about him for about 50 years, but I can honestly say that the real truth about what Johnny Cash was really like is not any better shown than in this book. How he was seen and loved by those who really knew him, loved him, worked with him, family members, and people who considered him a friend and at the same time he considered a friend. Over 40 people got the honor to say what Johnny meant to them and what kind of a man and friend he was. One thing that is obvious from reading this book of over 300 pages and over 40 people,is that there must be thousands of others that knew him as well and if they had the same opportunity would have similar things to say.
It is so obvious Johnny loved life ,how much his family meant to him,and how much he respected those around the music business. If anyone in the public arena ever gave the impression that as he journeyed throuh life;his friend and Savior Jesus Christ was always by his side;it had to be him.
Millions of us admired Cash;but what a privilege it must have been to have been close to him. No wonder a great personal loss is seen in the stories each participant has to tell.
As we continue to listen to his music;this book will remind us what a Legend "The Man in Black" really was.
I am sure that when he finally met his God,he probably said something like;"Thanks Lord, for the privilege to have served you and my fellow man.I did the best I could ,and it's good to be home with you"
After you read this book, why not sit down and think or write about what Johnny Cash meant to you.

OK, with all the hype about the movie, Walk the Line, and living in Nashville as I do...and hearing Johnny Cash's name everywhere you turn...I hesitated going to see the movie "just because". Well. I somehow ended up seeing it, (long story for another day.) And let me just say that much to my chagrin, I LOVED the movie. So now I've been on a Johnny Cash rampage, listening, watching, and reading everything I can get my hands on. Yes, I succumbed. Call me weak.

This title looked interesting to me because it's written by people who knew him on a day to day basis. There's a chapter written by the guy who kept his farm, for gosh sakes! You just feel the love seeping from the pages. I wept, I laughed, I've read it again, and again.

For readers who might be wondering what all the shoe size business is about here in the reviews (I know I wondered before receiving the book)...Hugh says in the book that Johnny always said he had "itchy feet". He always needed to be doing something and going somewhere different. Johnny said "Everyone has itchy feet, some just itch more than others." So at the beginning of everyone's chapter is that person's shoe size. Just one more quirky little reason why this book has earned a place on my 'favorites' shelf.

As a Nashvillian, I would like to say: We are proud of our 'Cash heritage' and this book lays it all on the line.

Thank you, Hugh Waddell for such a wonderful gift that I'm sure even JRC's family will treasure for years and years.

How do you come up with a way to tell the Johnny Cash Story that hasn't yet been done? There are countless biographies out there (disclosure: I have consulted, resourced and been interviewed on many), and the mythic history of this great man has been told many ways. But Hugh Waddell, JRC's friend and confidant of longstanding, has produced THE definitive portrait. He did it not by another retelling of the great Redemption story of our times (although that never gets old), or by a mere chronicle of John's achievements. Instead, he spectacularly tells the story through the eyes of John's family, friends, colleagues and fans. He wisely, and accurately, realized that it was John's effect on others which made him Mt. Rushmore-worthy. His life and music spoke to us, for us and with us, and the impact he made on people great and small continues to take the breath away. Johnny Cash walked with presidents (they fawned over him) and he sat with the people (who worshipped him). Hugh Waddell captures the qualities which allowed this by pointing the camera not at John, but at those he touched. The lens is reversed, and we see The Great Cash as a father, a farmer, a friend. His importance is told through the countless small interactions, the kindnesses and generosity, the human fraility and the soaring triumphs. He gave voice to our dreams and aspirations, taught us what it was like to run the mortal race, to fall greatly and rise back up greater. In these touching stories we see the real man, but more, we see ourselves. I did not want this book to end. The real people and their real stories about a real man are gripping. Johnny Cash was a giant, obviously. In this superb book we get to see how giants get that way. If I want someone to know what Johnny Cash was like, I give them this book.

This is a fantastic audio experience.
I love audio books on road trips. I download them into my iPod so I don't have to fiddle with discs while I'm driving.
Even if the stories aren't that great, a reader can more than make up for it.
Not the case with Louis L'Amour, of course, so The Highwaymen were just frosting on the cake.
It's a shame they all aren't around to collaborate on some more good ol' westerns. The sound effects were a nice surprise as well.
I keep dreaming that Sam Elliot will offer up his voice for audio books....
Not to be missed.

What a gem!

Driving alot, I enjoy listening to the L'Amour stories of the old west while I drive. Much better than the talk shows and trying to get music I like. L'Amour is a great writer, and the stories, especially the short stories, are very well written and easy to get into while driving. Many of the tecno-thrillers are too complicated to listen to, but there are very few of his westerns that I have not enjoyed while driving. This is a nice collection of Louis L'Amour stories read by Jonny Cash and other great personalities.

After reviewing the Cash Family Scrapbook, I must say I enjoyed it!!! Seeing the old photos of Johnny, his boyhood growing up, his children and grandchildren...my only regret is that I wish I could have met him in person! He is and will always be my hero!!! I highly recommend this scrapbook to all those Johnny Cash fans. I only wish it was not so expensive!!

A MUST FOR THE CASH FAN!

This is an excellent buy for any Cash fan. The photos are great, the poetry is beautiful, and the family history is more than adequate for getting a good feeling of where the man in black came from. The early promotional photos from Sun Records are just awesome and from reading the poetry it seems as though everyone in the Cash family has a knack for words. This book really has it all, insight into the lives of each Cash family member, poems written for mothers, fathers, grandfathers, a family tree, and even photos of former spouse's children! Just a great book to have.

Great photos and information!

I used this book, for research during the pre-production on 'Walk The Line'. Having grown up in a southern family, the Carters and the Cash family music and lore were know and spoken of quite frequently.
The photos of the family and the insight into this unique and loving family will be of great interest to fans and serious students of the southern music tradition.

I must also HIGHLY reccomend Cash by Johnny Cash with Patrick Carr. Because of my parents and grandparents, I grew up with a knowledge of the Carter family and Johnny Cash. After reading Cash, I really felt like I really understood some of the journey that Johnny had been through. If you're really interested in what forces drove the man with the man with the venerable voice, read this book! Cash: The Autobiography

I stumbled across this book on a friend's coffee table and was just idly leafing through, as I have no real interest in the 1960's or rock music. But the incredible glimpse into the life of a young person in a Britain still recovering from World War 2 was absolutely riveting. The writing is very much "at the moment" and real time. Married with never-before-published photos of the royal family and film stars (including Richard Burton and Liz Taylor during the filming of "Becket"), the result was a book I could not put down. Required reading for any Anglophile.

To me, this isn't really about the world of rick and roll as much of the story as a talented, intelligent boy born into relative adversity. Through his pen and camera we travel back to an imperial power on it's slow but unstoppable way down.

As more and more rock and pop stars are putting down their guitars and picking up their pens to write best selling autobiographies, renowned international photojournalist Ian Wright has just published "On The Brink OF Fame, Pop Stars In The Swinging 60s," an expose' on the era from a different perspective. Wright's stunning photographs animate his fascinating and amusing anecdotes about the celebrities, social scandals and the political/economic landscape which many have already come to regard as a social history, chronicling the Swinging 60s.-

In 1962, Wright was a sixteen year old junior photographer for "Teenage Special" a new supplement to a newspaper in the North East of England. Too young to drive, Ian strapped the heavy plate camera equipment to his bicycle, pedaling to local ballrooms, theaters and nightclubs, photographing emerging pop stars and celebrities. "Photograph everyone on the bill; you never know who's going to become famous and keep all your negatives," was the brief given by his editor, the now illustrious editor/publisher, Sir Harold Evans, who wrote the foreward for this book.

Consequently, teenage photographer Ian Wright was unwittingly on hand to photograph the creation of the Swinging 60s. From his first picture, for the Teenage Special, of Ella Fitzgerald in 1962 to his last of Elton John in 1971, Wright photographed everyone on the scene. His intimate back-stage portraits show eager, young performers unsure of whether they would flop or ascend to fame and fortune. Some fell into obscurity while others ascended to indescribable success. Five became Knights of the Realm and many died too young.

Wright's collection of historic negatives, thought lost for 45 years, have recently been discovered in his old darkroom, bringing to light countless unpublished photographs representing a veritable who's who of the 1960's including, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Roy Orbison, Ike & Tina Turner, Marianne Faithfull, Tom Jones, Moody Blues, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Dusty Springfield, Dave Clark Five, Manfred Mann, Engelbert Humperdink, The Animals, Jimi Hendrix, Peter & Gordon, Johnny Cash, Elizabeth Taylor, Peter O'Toole, Jayne Mansfield, Sophia Loren, Peter Ustinov, Rex Harrison, Michael Crawford, and members of the Royal family.

As you look through this amazing book, I'm sure you will think of the first time you heard the songs and films made famous by the faces in the photographs. You may think of your first date, your first dance, and your first kiss. These photographs and Mr. Wright's reminiscences allow us all to keep those memories forever.

Wright's pictures of the photographers and the crowd scenes in Beatlemania, show a nation rushing into a new era when nobody wanted to be left behind. His lens captured the youthful naiveté of Mick Jagger in 1965 and again the dynamic performer he had become, live on stage in 1971. Wright has managed to vividly capture on film and now in this book, the enormity of what was happening in the 60s.

As Sir Harold Evans says in the foreward, "This stunning collection of photographs by Ian Wright, many never published, affords us a rare pleasure. Here we are, face to face, with the artists who created what we now call the Swinging Sixties and we are intimately back-stage with them. They cannot know what awaits them when they go out to perform, still less could any of them guess whether they would flop or ascend to fame and fortune."

This book, available May-June 1999, includes more than 2,600 song title entries and numbers some 1,005 pages in length. Each entry includes: composer, recording location, producer, session personnel, and the format (single, ep, lp, CD) of release. Most entries carry detailed annotations. Included in the book is a Foreword by Marty Stuart and a complete listing of liner notes, with contents, written by Cash for his CBS albums from 1958-1986. Cash kindly allowed their replication for this project. An index of some 70 pages details the contents of the song entries. This publication is meant to be an encyclopedia, of sorts, of the recorded works of a country legend.
