Doug Mitchel has already photographed and chronicled other books on the topic of motorcycles and bicycles - and if his name sounds familiar, it's because it also appears on articles he's contributed to Hot Rod Bikes, Harley Women, and others. Here full-page color photos of selected choppers supplement discussions of design choices, specs, and features, including reviews of specialty makers who prefer unusual clients. Descriptions are as exact as tank making methods for unique designs, unusual powerful cycle systems by custom makers, and survey of companies on the cutting edge of chopper production. It's a chopper fan's dream guide.

This is another book in the graphic library series. The book graphically and with few words tells the story of the Apollo 13 Mission. Kids find this book exciting and it helps me teach English, American culture and history to my ESOL students. They like the series and this book very much.

If the Ar232 is what you're interested in, this is the book you've been waiting for. Really excellent drawings showing all external and many internal details. Great cockpit information. Lots of detail pix, but I could have done with fewer pix of models.

My Korean War Tank Bible

Review Date: 2004-02-04
I've had this book for several years, and I've turned to it so often that the poor paperback binding finally gave up the ghost and the cover and several pages came off. This book has so much information not only about armored fighting vehicles but about the war itself, that it wasn't until more recently that I realized the text does gloss over a good amount of detail. Jim Mesko's writing is very narrative, with a decidedly pro-American bent; looking past his obvious disgust with North Korean atrocities, he tells an often compelling tale of the major battles during the first year of the war.

The real gems of this book are the photographs, of which this book has no shortage. These photos cover almost every major vehicle and weapon used by the United Nations forces, even British and Australian carriers and softskins; however, every photo of an M26 Pershing tank happens to be Marine! No Army Pershings made the cut, and with the M46 Pattons appearing much later in the book (which is strange as they were there from September 1950 on), the casual reader may get the impression that only Marines had the heavy tanks and the Army used only Shermans and Chaffees until 1951.

Also included in the photos are M19 "Flak Wagons", M16 Quad Fifty halftracks, M39 utility vehicles, self-propelled artillery of all sorts, Jeeps and other trucks, British, Canadian, Australian, Turkish, and South Korean armor, captured North Korean vehicles, mine rollers, telephone line layers, flamethrower and bridgelayer tanks, armored cars, searchlights, even ambulance buses and a donut kitchen truck! The only thing I found missing was the M75 armored infantry carrier used late in the war, and precious little organizational information on the units that deployed and when they upgraded their tanks. Overall, I found this book very useful, with many photos I have not seen in any other source.

Worth Finding And Buying At Any Price

There have been many books published about the tanks and armored vehicles of World War II, especially the German vehicles. I own only about five or six of these types of books, but Crow's book rates as an easy favorite in my library because of its eloquent, organized style. This is not another "pictorial history" of armored fighting vehicles. Instead, Crow intersperses the historical and developmental history and technical data of tanks, armored cars and other armored variants with anecdotes about their tactical deployment. He also includes articles from other authors, such as an essay about the individual panzer divisions of WWII. The numerous photographs are first rate and they supplement the text perfectly by pointing out distinguishing characteristics of the AFV versions in the photos. Also included are a number of beautiful color drawings. Those who are familiar with the excellent book, "Encyclopedia of German Tanks of World War Two: The Complete Illustrated Dictionary of German Battle," will find Crow a worthy supplement. I tend to use the "Encyclopedia" as a reference manual only, given that it is dominated by photographs and technical data and not with much narrative. Crow's book is not as comprehensive as the "Encyclopedia," but unless you need to know about every German AFV variant ever made, Crow provides a more engaging reading and study of German armor development. It is unfortunate this book is now out of print but it is a classic worth searching for. Now, if I could only find an Allied counterpart by Crow.

DEFINITIVE !!!

This book is the first and only which covers in detail the complete history of all the tanks in the holocaust called "The great War".
Further, it is well illustrated throughout with quality period photos, and many full color plates.

Included is a section in color on the uniforms of the men who faught in the tanks.

Fully indexed, it includes a series of tables that list in detail British tank production from 1915-1919.

The team of authors and artists have produced a book that will be recognised as the definitive work on the Tanks of World War One.

Armored History

This book does for armor what English's _On Infantry_ does for them. Though it may be considered a little dated, it covers the development of tanks and armored units up to the earlier Arab-Israeli wars and may in fact have inspired them to give armor a try. The coverage of WWI and 2 is excellant. While the latest antitank weapons are constantly being offered as proof of the death of armor, please notice that the slingshot has not made infanry obsolete, but machine guns, etc. have changed their tactics. So it is with armor, as demonstrated in the recent US-Iraq War.

After dealing with many books dedicated to the "Arrow", I almost stumbled on this unique pubblication, and it was great surprise.

The book is a reprint of 1958 Aircraft Manual; actually the preliminary operating instructions of the J-75 powered Arrow's prototypes. In fact the procedures reported in the text are the provisory checklist , since the testing phase was in full swing and the civil and military pilots were expanding the flight envelope. Nevertheless, every main subject is presented ( similar to a final production aircraft manual ),along with noteworthy documents. Many technical details are available, covering aircraft systems, equipments, normal and emergency procedures, aircraft data and diagrams, perfomance charts and flight envelopes at 3 significant altitudes. Maybe this is the definitive book on Arrow's aircraft data and the best complement to any study describing this cutting edge design and his untimely cancellation. Indeed, the Arrow was exceeding the RCAF specifications during the test phase with provisionally powered prototypes , since the production was planned fitting with Orenda Iroquis engine. The new powerplant itself was living up with perfomance expectations, being successfully tested in flight with a modified B47.

Curiously, in the foreword the author explains that the original instructions were classified "secret" and iussued to both company and military pilots.Someone will speculate ironically that the classification was not intended to preclude intelligence by foreign agencies, but to hide the program achievements from Canadians to justify its demise.
