Somewhere, I have a copy of this side-splitting parody. Few books have made me laugh as much as this one; the jabs at Charles Dickens, especially A Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations, will have you rolling on the floor.

Help for Domestication (and for humans that want to laugh)

Review Date: 2000-03-13
Accepting Domestication is the third collection of Kevin and Kell comic strips, covering September 1997 to August 1998. The online comic strip is about the Dewclaws; Kevin, a rabbit, Kell, a wolf and their two children, Rudy, a wolf and Lindesfarne, a hedgehog. In a world where you next door neighbor could be your next meal, this "mixed" marriage subjects the Dewclaws to a number of inconviences: being looked down upon by Rudy's girlfriend Fiona's parents, a pair of foxes (though it doesn't help that Fiona's father, a fennec fox, is mistaken for a rabbit because of his ears), and occasional threats to Kevin's life (though not serious) by Kell's brother Ralph. That is not to mention the usual tribulations of modern life: trips to school hunting championships, predator retraining at Herdthinners, Inc., threats to be downsized, and getting invited to the Jerry Springer-Spaniel Show. Mr. Holbrook is able to create great characters and stories, while balancing the dictates of the familiar yet unfamilar world that his animal characters inhabit. As an added bonus to this collection is a 10-page "pamphlet" covering Domestication, a dreaded condition when wolves are proud to be decended from the Big Bad Wolf.

If you have an amorous cat and a sense of humour, this is a must buy book. Richard Smith's witty writing marries up nicely with Susann Ferris-Jones Persian effected illustrations. For cat lovers whose cats love.

I don't play golf, but this little book is definitely worth reading. It kept me in stitches all the way through! I imagine that a golfer would even get more out of it than I did. I've given this book as a gift to several friends who do golf and they also give it an excellent rating. Lelsie Nielsen is at his best! Enjoy!

Li'l Abner: Dailies 1954

The Genius Of Al Capp
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2003-04-05
Al Capp was on the verge of reaching his peak- a peak he would maintain for many, many years- in these great 1939 newspaper strips. The drawing style is getting bolder and funnier and Capp's visual and narrative satire is beginning to hit a stride that put him at the top of his medium and at the forefront of American popular culture. "Li'l Abner" is a great American work of art, and boy, is it funny stuff. This beautiful series of books is a Godsend from revered publisher Denis Kitchen, and reestablishes Capp's important place as a twentieth century artist and writer.

My favorite sequence here has Abner posing as a college student ("Oh,Happy Collidge Days!!") as a couple of equally-disguised gangsters try to kill him. While being shoved off a cliff and into a river, tied to a boulder, Abner enthuses "This is mah first collidge hazin'!!" Buy all 27 volumes of this priceless series and take the phone off the hook for a few months.

An Exposition of Style and Content

I tend not review books, especially those that I have not read, but in this case, I am prepared to make an exception. Mr. Candappa has, once again, shown us that his grasp of what sells is extraordinary almost to the point of the supernatural. I was astounded, at least had I read the book I would have been, by the depth of knowledge of his subject matter and can only conclude that a great deal of energy and bodily fluids must have been expended by the author and his research team in pursuit of accuracy and a reasonable advance. Bravo.

I acquired this book sometime around the 1st grade. I'm not sure when I actually got around to reading it for the first time, but I have been enchanted ever since. Buy it for yourself or, if you need an excuse, to read to your children.
