It is so sad that this book is out of print!! It is hilarious - and while it was aimed towards the Yuppies of the early 90's, it is all too relevant again, in this age of Bugaboo driving, Cookie-reading parents!!

This book wakes up every sleepless parent reading Goodnight Moon for the 1,000,000th time. You will get a kick out of it, and your kids won't know the difference (they can actually relate since it is all about their yuppie existance!)

brilliant and hilarious!

How did this one escape my notice when it was in print? Why is it out of print? One of the funniest parodies, (and not at all unkind), i've encountered. Especially perfect for those of us just coming out of endless recitations of the original Goodnight Moon (which is marvelous but does tend to leave a large dent in one's brain the eleventy-millionth time you read it aloud). Delightful read, superbly crafted parody.

This isn't a "male-bashing" book, honest! It just very sweetly glorifies cats. After all, a cat isn't better than Mr. Right, but a cat is sure better than Mr. Wrong! Enjoy! .....

This is a really cute book!

I love Bradley Trevor Greive books. This one is no exception. I bought it for my husband to encourage him on his path to be more healthy. I had to preview it of course. There were sensible suggestions and wonderful pictures. This book and all of his others are great. I would definately recommend them.

Every single one of these "350 foolproof ways to totally screw up your life" are hilarious and will make you laugh out loud. Most times you expect to wade through a bunch of lame quotes and jokes before you reach a couple of good ones, but not here! Every single page will make you literally laugh out loud. You won't put the book down! This book definately ranks among the best of the joke books.

I don't have a lot of time for casual reading, but this small work is one of the funniest and most entertaining book I have ever had the pleasure to read.

If you do a lot of heavy reading and only have time for an occasional leisure read, make sure this book is on your list.

Do you wander around aimlessly in your tweed jacket with the leather patches on the elbows? Do you live off of money made three or more generations ago by a soundrel? Does the term "Preppy" offend you as being much too nouveau and personally insulting? Are you a "Clubman"?

If any of these comments applies to you, or to anyone you know, then this is your kind of book. In addition to being hilarious, it is right on the money.

After you finish it, buy a copy of "Old Money" by Nelson Aldrich or anything by Lewis Lapham.

Gosh, what an amazing compilation!

I have to say that ever since I stumbled upon this book in a used bookshop my love for Homer has increased immesurably!

It features samples from The Iliad and Odyssey from just about every translator up until 1994.

Comparing various prose, verse and ryhming translations by famous and non-famous translators and poets of the past proves to be an incredible source of inspiration and wisdom!

"Homer in Translation" can provide anyone who is looking into Homer academically or personally with more than enough comparative translations to NOT have to go out and purchase a few different copies of the Iliad or Odyssey. (It is good to own at least 2 of each).

I find that comparing Homer gives me the utmost joy and pleasure, and now having a glimpse of excerpts on the art of translating, my joy is fulfilled, and I guarantee yours will be too!

Take care!

Ever since I read Keats' poem "On First Looking into Chapman's Homer," I've been looking for a copy or at least a sample of his words. Chapman was a contemporary of Shakespeare and his words are wonderful. But this book is more than a compilation of snippets from various translators. It includes related writings from Keats (the above poem, of course), Shelley, Chaucer, James Joyce's description of the young Homer and other authors. For Homerphiles, it is a nice book to have and a source that points to other authors who have also been smitten with the ancient bard.

Great poet, great series

This book is the centerpiece of Penguin's wonderful and now tragically out of print Poets in Translation series, featuring selections from many translations with brief introductions. Editing a volume for Homer is to tackle a great volume of translations, many of them famous in their own right. The cut-off year is 1994, so the book doesn't include one of my favorite translations, Stanley Lombardo's, although it does have Fitzgerald and Lattimore excerpts; their texts are the other ones popular in schools these days.

While the Middle and Early Modern English selections could have used glosses, and some of the introductions are less than informative, the editors have done a fantastic job at digging up rare translations and finding examples of Homeria, Homer-inspired literature from Joyce to Keats to Walcott's OMEROS. One gets a sense not only of how Anglophone views of Homer have changed, but also how writing has changed. It demonstrates why certain translations (i.e. Chapman's, Pope's, Pound's First Canto) are justly famed.

If you like the idea of the Poets in Translation series, but not Homer, I suggest trying BAUDELAIRE IN ENGLISH or OVID IN ENGLISH, two of my favorites, and neither so overwhelmed by excess translators as this book can be. On the other hand, there will certainly be more than one Homer in this book to please even the most picky reader, and the joy of discovering another fine translation or inspiration makes this book worth 5/5 stars. Homer lives!

A book that is just as funny for adults as it is for teens. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and could see where teens would cringe when well-meaning adults acted in what they thought were "cool" and "hip" ways. I've done it myself many times! A great, breezy read.

First of all, the book is funny as hell. It's just like a good matzoh ball: just heavy enough. But more to the point, you can really get some ideas here! After putting some of Mr. Shapiro's principles into practice, I saved over $4000.00 on my David's Bar Mitzvah.

Try it. You'll like it.

Hilarious - but gentle - send up of a big event!

Review Date: 1999-04-07
Shapiro does a marvelous send-up of every aspect of the American penchant for overdoing Bar Mitzvahs (as well as every other coming-of-age) celebration. He harpoons (and lampoons) the "My event can be better than your event" materialism and mentality which all too often masks the true meaning of the event. The cartoons match the over-the-top, rapid-fire humor of what seems the perfect monologue for a borscht belt comedian. This one moves even more quickly than the 100 pages leads you to believe. You'll be done with it in less than a couple of hours - that is, if you don't stop to chuckle or laugh out loud like I did throughout this book. A perfect gift for the parents about to "celebrate" or "suffer through it."
