This is the easiest and funniest writer about wine west of the Hudson! She has been hanging around grapes and writing for the Rocky Mountain News longer than most wine writers and has stomped on grapes and a few inflated heads of others who talk and write about wine. This is a 200 page booklet that will satisfy those just beginning and even those who think they are aficionados! An example of her wit and not taking any of the business of wine too seriously is her chapter (I think all are articles which have appeared in the News) on dessert wines: "Just Desserts, Cressing The Bellybutton." You may think this review sounds like I know Jennifer Rosen, but I have never met her. But, I have been in the high-end restaurant business in Chicago and Florida for 25 years, and know a good thing when I read it!

A very funny vintage

Jennifer Rosen's latest book is wonderful . . . unless you prefer your wine writing to be stilted, boring, stuffy, and hidebound. She writes much more about the experience of wine than trying to pin it down with odd and obscure flavour and scent descriptions. That, plus her off-the-wall sense of humour make this one of my favourite wine books.

An excellent and enthusiastically recommended giftbook for wine lovers of all seasons.

Not just for breast cancer

This book is empowering, and I know what I'm talking about - this year I was diagnosed with a nasty cancer (kidney cancer, stage IV (metastasized), grade 4 (aggressive)), so I got to experience fear like I'd never known. The book does a great job of weaving the cancer experience into the rest of life, and Ms. Monique makes it VERY clear that howEVER she feels about it is absolutely okay with her! I don't have breast cancer, but I gobbled every word and I recommend it to everyone involved with any cancer, without exception. (I'm doing very well now, btw.)

After I was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer (really bad), lots of people sent me books - some very spiritual books and some science-y. This book was a breath of fresh air and made me laugh out loud. Send it to the women you know with BC, they will love it. I have given it to many.

As one who is symmetrically challenged, breast-wise as Spencer is, I promise this is a terrific book to read if you or anyone you love is diagnosed with breast cancer. In fact, even if no one you know has the disease, which is unlikely these days, it's a tremendously funny guide for getting through any of life's daunting little challenges. I'd say it is an absolute scream, but I don't want to scare you; it is an hilarious trip, packed also with good information about your diagnosis and what to expect. The humor shines through, a good thing in the worst of circumstances. Speaking of screaming, it put me in mind of a regular day after work when five of us ladies were hooked up to our portaports, getting our dose of poison, I mean chemo, when a four-inch cockroach scurried out from a corner and under a chair. We all hoisted up our legs (as best we could in those recliners) and started screeching and hollering for help. It was like, "Cancer smancher, this friggin dangerous beast just ran across the linoleum!" So, there are indeed laughs to be had--and more than fair are in The Courage Muscle. A great comfort.

This book is very interesting, part cookbook part Hollywood scandles.

Laurie Jacobson delves into some of Tinsletowns most interesting stories.
From the murder trial of Spade Cooley (who killed his second wife in the 1940's) to the untimly death of the orginal Edna Turnblat (Divine) Lauie Jacobson tells about the scandals and then shows a recipe connected to that person (After talking about Roman Polanski she shares a recipe for the nachos he at before fleeing to Europe during his rape trial.)

A very interesting book.

I had so much fun reading this book! The stories are great and Miss Jacobson clears up a lot of false Hollywood rumors. The best part about this book is that it includes chapters about some forgotten stars like Carole Landis, Dorothy Kilgallen, and Lupe Velez. Anyone who is a fan of classic Hollywood and loves juicy gossip will want this book.

I fortuitously fell into this little gem the day after xmas.....a belated "BEST" present to myself.
While I already own Jacobson's two other books and hold her in high regard, this book proves that she is only getting better as a film historian and writer.
She assumes a slick, quasi-cinema noir persona in her narrative and mixes in a Sandra Lee-like easy 'recipe' that takes a not too subtle slam at each of the scandals/stories she relates. The vanity of the 'dish' (aka scandal/tragedy/hard luck story) only enhances the general readability of this book. This is a novel approach that makes an already interesting product even more appealing. I kept thinking that the author did a terrific job with the material she was presenting.
Aside from the kidding around, this book is really rather fair and factual. The author knows her stuff and relies on knowledgeable sources to substantiate or refute claims made in the book.
My only criticism of this book is that I wish it had been longer and had covered some other stories that I find interesting and want to know more about. Hopefully there will be a follow-up to this book which will do that.
Anyway, this is a very good read and worth the $ and time spent reading it.

I love Laurie Jacobson's books and this one is the best yet!!! I love her "juicy little tidbits" about the stars of yesteryear. The stories are very entertaining and I love the fact that she also included recipes to match the stories. A very clever thing to do!!! It's almost like 2 books in one, a gossipy book and a cookbook! I hope she continues to research Hollywood and to write wonderful books about the stars!!!! My only complaint---it's not long enough!!! I am ready for a "Dishing Hollywood II".

I highly recommend Dishing Hollywood The Real Scoop on Tinseltown's Most Notorious Scandals. Laurie Jacobson really knows her stuff and serves up heaping portions of scandal and intrigue of Hollywood's most notorious stars. I have read all of the author's books and Dishing Hollywood is Jacobson at her best. Jacobson brilliantly spins tale after sordid tale, "sprinkles" famous film quotes throughout each chapter and "tops" off with a recipe of the star's favorite dish (or, in some cases, their last meal!). Dishing Hollywood is a tasty treat, and I can't wait for Jacobson's next book!

We run one of the most popular daily adult joke websites on the net, and as such we often feel like we've run across every tired old wheezer of a joke that's ever been written.

This book proved us completely wrong; this is a TON of the best and funniest jokes now circulating, and none of the garbage. We only wish we'd thought of this first!

I have collected all the dirty joke books from their debut in the middle 80's. The ones that have been coming out in the last 6 years or so, have been a rehash of the old ones. This one is DYNAMITE! It's gross and excellent. The jokes are new and extremely good. Any of the older jokes (Which represents the ones frome the older joke books are the best ones of the bunch.) I hope they come out with edition II.

I was fortunate enough to purchase this book while dining in Japan's finest mexican food restaurant. The owner says he is good friends with Mr. Goatskin and Mr. Foreskin.

If you hate getting constant Forwards from friends with jokes that you have to muddle through the 50 times it was forwarded before it got to you, due to the fact that most internet and computer users are oblivious to this thing call cut and paste, look no further. Our research team tells us that this book has every joke forwarded from person to person all over the world in it.

So when you get that email from a friend where the subject line reads; "FW: Ha-ha" or "FW: Thought this was funny" or "FW: LOL", delete it and buy this book and you will have all those jokes.

These jokes are funny. There are one-liners, stories, battle of the sexes jokes. It is just like the title says. This book is way better than Drew Carey's.

A Consciousness-Changing Experience

Review Date: 2007-12-25
I received this book as a gift, sent to me by my friend Carol Howard. After putting it in the mail, she sent an email to let me know "a special book" was coming. She didn't want to spoil the suprise by telling me the name of the book or its author, so here (with her permission) is how she described the book:

"It is a great book by a very famous author and by the time you finish this book your consciousness will be changed forever. You will never look at the world in the same way ever again if you sit down and read the book all the way through in one sitting especially. But beware, you will experience small tremors and convulsions in your body as you read through this book for it has a profound effect on the consciousness and really gets the energy going. I don't want to tell you the name or the author because I want it to be a surprise. But he is very famous and has a cult following and is hailed by critics as one of the most original thinkers of our time. This book definitely lets you see into parallel universes and stimulates creative thinking among other things. So I really hope you like it and I also hope you save this email so you can tell me if I described the book accurately to you."

Next day she added: "...don't worry, even though the writer and the book have a cult following and it is very cathartic, the followers are not too rigid because it is about stuff that everyone can relate to, and also has a lot in it about animal communication and their view of our world that is often revolutionary and startling."

Well, I was surprised, to say the least. Although her description was completely misleading, it was also completely true! As she'd warned, I indeed experienced "tremors and convulsions" (of laughter) and all the rest. I laughed out loud. Then laughed again when I re-read Carol's email description.

By the way, of all the cartoons in this volume, I had only seen two before. But your mileage may vary.

In summary, this is a great book that I was lucky enough to get from a great friend with a great sense of humor.

The Far Side Galleries are literature's version of greatest hits CDs. This edition is even forwarded by Stephen King.

The artistic masterpieces in this one come from the books Brides of The Far Side, Valley of the Far Side and It Came From the Far Side. It may be cheaper to buy these books individually instead of this gallery so compare prices before purchasing.

The advantage of owning the galleries is that some cartoons are full page size which is three times the size of the original books. Not all cartoons are full size though just some.

Classic cartoons contained in this one such as dogs looking at slides with one pointing to the screen, "Now in this slide we can see how the cornered cat has seems to grow suddenly bigger, Trickery! Trickery! Trickery!" Another has a guy waking up with a post it note on his left foot where his toe should be with the words "Went to market" on it. The classic human parody of nagging where a bear demands of her husband who has No. 8 shaved into his fur, a huge tag with no.8 on his ear and a needle sticking out of him "Late Again! This Better Be Good!"

Is this book better than other galleries? Well that's a matter of opinion, different ones appeal to different people. Should you buy it? Yes!

Gary Larson is a twisted, demented personality and we are all better for it. His cartoons are some of the most absurd, yet hilarious concentrations of humor that have ever existed and this collection is no exception. Review Date: 2007-01-15
Gary Larson has created the funniest cartoons in the history of mankind. Unlike other comics you do not need to read them in a series as each individual cartoon tells its own hilarious story in a stand alone fashion. Therefore you do not need to have read the previous volumes to enjoy this edition to its fullest.

Fourth in the series of Far Side collections, the 1994 originally released Gallery 4's cartoons come from the smaller books Wildlife Preserves, Wiener Dog Art and Unnatural Selections. This volume is forwarded by Robin Williams who gives a four paragraph opinion on Larson and his work. Far Side Gallery 4 also have a unique cover where the lenses of the woman's glasses have been cut out, meaning when you open the cover, still viewing the exact same drawing, the glasses are on their own on the next page. This however does mean Gallery 4 has the most fragile cover of all the galleries.

A mixture of four comics to a page and full page comics make up this volume, most are black and white but with the occasional coloured pages every now and then. Classic Far Sides in this volume include aliens with the moon landing astronauts in a jar about to shake the jar to see if they'll fight, the hospital for mothers whose children stepped on sidewalk cracks, the famous Mr Ed verse Francis the talking mule debates, punk accountants and many more hilarious cartoons such a chicken reading a sign on the other side of the road saying Why Do You Need a Reason?

This like all Larson's work is a must own!

A different meaning for "All Creatures Great and Small".

This book is a real HOOT!

I guess the thing that makes Larson's cartoons so different is that his mind is just a little further off in space than where most of ours dwell.
Reading a whole book of these cartoons is a very different thing from looking at individual cartoons over an extended period. After 10-15 pages your mind tends to get climatized to this thought process and his cartoons almost start to feel like the normal ,rather than perverse, way to look at things.
We all need this exercise in mind-stretching and it is great to do it with humor.
I strongly recommend it to anyone who is not already a fan of Larso;myself for instance,at least until now.
If there are a few cartoons in the book that you did not "get";it simply means your mind is not totally warped yet.Just keep at it,you'll make it!
Enjoy !

Refreshingly Honest and Unsentimental! Brava, Shelley Lewis!

Last year, my husband was diagnosed with an incurable cancer at just 35 years of age. As we went through this devastating ordeal, the last thing we wanted to read about was how we should be having some great epiphany. I can assure you that cancer is not the best thing that ever happened to our family, nor did it make us better people. I often felt guilty for the sort of resentment I felt towards the cancer hype portrayed in the media. That is, until I read Ms. Lewis' book and discovered that I wasn't the only one with this reaction. How liberating to read thoughts, which mirrored my own, within those pages!

When I first found this book on Amazon, I read the synopsis and excerpts to my husband. We were both in tears from hysterical laughter! I anxiously awaited the book and immediately dove into the pages when it arrived. I read most of it aloud to my husband, who laughed along with me, giving us a much needed therapeutic break. As my husband and I further discussed excerpts, I learned details about his perspective, about which I had never thought. I was able to see I had unknowingly been insensitive in certain instances. This book served as a wonderful catalyst for discussion.

Ms. Lewis states her case clearly and adeptly. The writing is exceptional, and the read is easy and light. As a writer myself, this book served as a wonderful source of inspiration. It certainly tops my list of favorites!

I want to thank Ms. Lewis for having the guts to be honest about this very sensitive topic. There is an immense amount of pressure on patients, "survivors", and caregivers to "sugar-coat" the realities of cancer. In my opinion, her candid approach is much more therapeutic and helpful in the end. I encourage anyone going through a cancer experience to read this book. It is a valuable resource for patients, caregivers, family, and friends.

Is it possible to be this sardonic and compassionate at the same time?
Shelley Lewis opens the windows in the stuffy room of bumper sticker spirituality. Funny and caring in a Nora Ephron way and yet full of useful info. I read it as a story, not as a way to face breast cancer, and I recommend it to doctors and patients. You don't have to have breast cancer to enjoy this book. Another book I recommend to anyone facing a "devastating diagnosis" is Jessie Gruman's Aftershock.

Being a 3 time breast cancer repeat offender, this book rang more true than any of the others I have read. I was beginning to feel guilty about not having a spiritual experience until I read this book. Also I was getting quite peeved about "the race" because they don't interview people with multiple occurences. They only show happy, happy, happy faces of those with 1 occurence. What are we, chopped liver?
This book has made me rethink my advice to first time offenders. It is certainly the most honest book I have read about this awful disease. I highly recommend it to any breast cancer patient or family member of patient.

Part memoir, part how-to book, "The Five Lessons I Didn't Learn from Breast Cancer" has universal appeal for all sorts of cancers, even the "non-female" kind like my non Hodgkin's lymphoma. Though there are plenty of how-to tips for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients, I enjoyed this book because of Lewis' take on the "Tyranny of Positive Thinking" and the pinkapalooza cartel. I respect her choice not to call herself a "survivor," though I wonder if it's really because, as she says, Death wasn't at her door, but rather sent her a "Thinking of You Card." (For me, Death had pulled into the driveway and parked the car.) Never whiny and often downright funny, this book is a must-read for anyone who has been sucker punched by cancer.

In reading this book (and being a native Texan) I found that every word in the book is true. There is not one lie I can find. It is a great read if you are thinking of moving to Texas. It will let you know what you are about to get yourself into. It is also a great read for native Texans who want a great laugh! If you are from Texas, you can find at least one line in the book that describes your life in the wonderful state of Texas. :)

It wasn't my choice to go into exile, my family moved to New England when I was a kid. I've lived here since, but Texas has always still held my heart. This book is a great tribute to the great Texan way of life. It's a fairly good illustration of Texas and Texans, and it does contain a few good chuckles, I wish there were more though.

I bought this book for my mom, a proud Texan who hasn't lived there since shortly after she got married, some 50 years ago. But she related to everything in this book and laughed so hard she couldn't talk. Over the years, I've bought my fussy mom countless presents, but this is the first one I felt she really liked.

Even as a non-Texan, I found the book to be hilarious (my mom called me up and read the whole thing to me over a few nights). I don't even like Texas (too hot and buggy for my taste), but after hearing this book, it kind of made me want to move there! This would be a GREAT present (or gift to yourself) for anyone who loves Texas, anyone from Texas, and anyone about to move there (fixin' to be Texan).

I loved this book!!

We are thinking about making a move to Texas from California, and I wanted to learn a little about the culture. This book teaches you everything you will need to know. I couldn't put it down. It was hilarious!

Helen Bryant has summed up everything you need to make the transition from being "from someplace else" to being a Texan, all in a compact and witty book. I lived in Houston and San Antonio for 17 years and I'm fixin to go back (from California) so I thought I'd better brush up. I feel ready, now.

After I finished the book I wrapped it up and gave it to friends, native Southern Californians who are soon to make Fort Worth their home. If you are bound for Texas, read this book first!

This is a good FRIENDS book on series 1, although it needs more stuff about the actors of FRIENDS. It would be a lot better if we were given a behind the scenes look at the sets etc. However it's got loads of quotes, and in depth episode guides for series 1.

PERFECT!!!

This book brought all the fun and laughter you remember from the episodes it covers, and more! With absolutely beautiful color pictures of the stars, as well as black and white pictures of some of the scenes from the episodes, and also candids of the stars themselves, a true Friends fan/addict can't go wrong with this one!! Every time I pick it up, it brings a smile to my face and heart! Fantastically written, I enjoy this book from first page to last no matter how many times I have read it. Just like the shows re-runs, I can't seem to get enough!! Thank you David Wild!! and the creator, director, and cast of Friends!

It was packed with all different pictures and side information that normally people wouldn't come across. This book was entertaining and was a lot of fun. I am really looking foward to reading the next one.
