A Great Adventure Story
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-07
I loved this adventure story. The previous reviewer did a good job of summarizing the storyline. I found wonderfully diverse characters, a rollicking story of the high seas, pirates, love, vengeance, courage, survival on a deserted island, and more. I was shocked to have the story end "in the middle" with no resolution!! I immediately found "Martin Conisby's Vengeance" and for another 80 cents I had it in my Kindle in minutes and continued. His writing style reminds me a bit of Robert Louis Stevenson, particularly Kidnapped, with the bond between David Balfour and Alan. I will write a review of the second book, but if you like adventure stories (Haggard, RL Stevenson) you should find this a roller coaster of adventure filled with cliffhangers. Accurate historical details (they prime their flintlocks, patch their musket balls) and ships, ships, ships and life (and death) aboard ships. Courage, fighting, honor -- all in wonderful profusion.

A great find ;)

"The Frenchman beside me had been dead since dawn. His scarred and shackled body swayed limply back and forth with every sweep of the great oar as we, his less fortunate bench-fellows, tugged and strained to keep time to the stroke."

Mr. Farnol brings back the pirate days of the Spanish Main in this stirring book filled with picturesque characters. It is a full-blooded, wholesome novel that captivates the reader.

Martine Conisby, Lord Wendover, embittered by his five years of slavery on the Spanish galleon Esmeralda, escapes during a sea fight to an English ship and makes his way back to England, determined to avenge himself on Richard Brandon, who was the cause of his father's death and his own ill-treatment. Broken in body and spirit, he arrives home one night disguised as a tramp, just in time to save from the hands of robbers a beautiful girl, Lady Jane Brandon, the daughter of the man whom he has sworn to punish. In a tavern he meets a pal, Adam Penfeather, who unfolds to him the story of Black Bartlemy, an infamous pirate, and his treasure buried on an island-- treasure of fabuous value that has been the dream and hope of roving adventurers along the Spanish Main for many years.

The engrossed reader will eagerly follow the adventures of the treasure seekers who set sail on the good ship Faithful Friend and the unique experiences of Martin and the fair Lady Jane - whose family the hero hated - as they found themselves alone on the island which contained the buried treasure. He will encounter some rogues as bloodthirsty as any pirates who ever sailed the Seven Seas, and discover love episodes that stir the emotions. Mr. Farnol has never made a wider appeal than in this, his first sea story.

Among the Very Best "Unknown" American Novels
Helpful Votes: 17 out of 17 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-21
William Attaway's BLOOD ON THE FORGE powerfully depicts both the Black migration to the industrial north after WWI and the startling hell-like environment of the vast iron & steel works of the era. No other writer--novelist, sociologist, historian--has ever captured so well the compelling, visceral experience of the humans working these sacrificial jobs. As Attaway walks us through the vast furnace & forge areas of the works, our own skin scorches along with that of his worker-protagonists. We become party to the daily struggle to survive the most appalling working conditions.

This novel deserves a place on the highest level of our American esteem. It's tragic Attaway was unable to produce more work, since both his vision of the American experience and his fictive language were intense, revelatory and precious to anyone wishing to know and acknowledge this nation's true industrial and racial history.

I have not read my grandfather's books, but i am planning on doing so this summer. I love to write as my grandfather did, i am currently writing a science fiction book, the subject matter is very different to his books, but when i write it remineds my father of his father when his father would write. I never met my grandfather but i feel he is always with me.

Excellent book for shelf and wards

Review Date: 2005-01-28
I only used this book for the entire clerkship and I was not only well prepared for the qeustions that came up on the wards, but also well prepared for the shelf exam. I aced the shelf by reading this book twice. If you don't have the time or the motivation for reading the actual Blueprints Ob/gyn reveiw book, I recommend studying from this book and you'll be set.

At least 10 Shelf questions...

Review Date: 2004-03-17
I used this book in preparation for the Shelf exam in OB/GYN and it was extremely helpful. Several questions on the exam were straight out of these vignettes. The varied style- some case info, some reading, some questions- for each vignette helped to maintain focus, and for me provided a much better prep than just the short questions found in many other books.

book small enough to carry around with you. has a good amount of material, not too sparse, challenging questions.

Great case review for the medical student
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2005-02-24
I wish I had this earlier in my Peds rotation. This book presents 50 vignettes, gives you the information step by step (like it would unfold on the wards) and prompts you to think about the differential, what labs to order, and what treatment to give. It's great because it has 50 common presentations (limp, fever with V/D, etc) and makes you THINK through the case instead of you simply reading the entire vignette with the diagnosis and treatment laid out for you. Additionally there are some case-specific questions at the end of each vignette.

Easy reading and Great pics!! If you want to be one up for procedures, get this text and read before your clerkships and/or subI's start. You will truly inpress your seniors who are teaching & pimping you on the wards!!

Cheers, Doc Todd

Perfect for all clinical rotations

This book is a perfect reference to have for all third and fourth year medical students (interns too!). Great illustrations and step by step instructions on all of your basic procedures. If your intern is too busy to show you how to throw a double mattress, just learn yourself. If you know a paracentesis is coming up, read up on it with this book and you'll know exactly what's going on. This book teaches as well as some interns! While it won't boost your grade on any shelf exams, it will certainly impress any interns, residents, or attendings who let you do any procedures. It is a bit bulky and you can't carry it around, but keep it in your team room and use it to practice suturing at home. You'll be ages ahead of everyone else.

Blueprints is an excellent pocket-series review

The Blueprints 5-volume series is an excellent review source for the third- or fourth-year medical student preparing for Boards part II. Each book is a small paperback that are just small enough to fit into a white coat pocket. The illustrations are black & white, and are primarily drawings. The series is organized by discipline: Internal Medicine, Surgery, OB/GYN, Pediatrics, and Psychiatry. Each book presents broad major concepts, has a number of helpful mnemonics, and does an amazing job of covering the discipline in a little over 100 pages. I would definitely recommend this series to someone who is looking at review texts that s/he can carry with them on the wards. The only negative is that the books are still in their first edition (originally published in 1997) so some of the newer treatment modalities are (obviously) not mentioned. Overall, however, an excellent series which has been well worth the investment.

This is a concise, complete, relatively in-depth, portable and essential little book to have with you if you are interested in becoming knowledgeable in common urological topics. For the medical student, knowing and understanding the contents of this book would really make you stand out from the pack during 4th year clerkships in urology. In short, highly recommended.

This [...] book is loaded with a ton of numbers and a lot of data analysis. All this analysis is very unique as writers split a lot of data into individual segments so that it can be easily applied to a lot of people. 60 Interview answers are good and give you a method of thinking which is very unique. Overall a very comprehensive book!

Admissions Mystery Book: Brutally Honest and Straightforward!!

Review Date: 2006-08-22
In past 3 years, I have purchased multiple books on medical school admissions. This book is undoubtedly the most extensive and detailed book I have seen on the subject. Writers are out on a mission and expose exactly what different cogwheels of medical school admissions are doing to restrict the supply of doctors in the US and then they empower you with information to beat the system in its own game. 50 Interview answers are in-depth and essays are multiple as well as articulate. Strongly recommend!!

To be read slowly...

I found this book to be an incredible compilation of poetry, if time is taken to read each work slowly. Each reading of In Cisco reveals something new to me, whether an image or a thought, and can stop me in my tracks for a moment. The author shows himself in each poem and by the end of reading them all, you want to seek him out because he feels like an old friend. I suggest this book to those who have time to consider each word, each line, each poem.

Rattan writes with a robust imagination

The Border showcases the poetry and lyrical style of Cleatus Rattan, a former academician (he recently retired from the English Department at Cisco Community College) and a Texas rancher (a hundred miles west of Fort Worth near the small Bible Belt community of Cisco). Rattan writes with a robust imagination, a compelling sense of humor, and an artist's eye for detail that readers will find as entertaining as it is thoughtful and thought provoking. In Cisco, Texas: Here, no one comes to visit/to see the sights. In San Francisco,/well scrubbed guests arrive at the door,/bags in hand, sheepish smiles/on their faces, with plans to scamper/in well known directions. Fewer friends/arrive now, but those who come/have no plans, their hands reach/for the dog's head. They see sheep,/mesquite, scrub oak, the smile/on my face, and stars meandering/to nowhere known.
