An Essential Book for Educators and Computer Accessibility!
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-13
I've used this book or versions of it for a couple of years now...I've often been asked in regular science education classes or in neuroscience or biology situations, "How do we make this stuff accessible to those with disabilities?" Thank heavens for all the tremendous work done by this group and other innovative inventors who strive to put Deaf people like me and those with learning, visual, and orthopedic disabilities on an equal footing with everyone else. This book has more than served its purpose and paid back its price many times over. Teachers and professors are always amazed at the amount of work that is ongoing in this area, as well as the amount of money out there for developing computer technology for the disabled through the National Science Foundation, the Department of Education, and the National Institute of Health, as well as individual companies.

We will never make this country totally computer literate if we exclude specific populations. As the push for inclusion of students with disabilities in regular schools and acceptance of these students becomes stronger, it is absolutely critical that teachers be aware of both hardware and software that can make their curriula more accessible to both disabled and 'normal' students.

I fully endorse and encourage teaching universities and educators and librarians to make sure an updated version of this book is made available so that all students have an opportunity to achieve their highest abilities. Karen Sadler Science Education, University of Pittsburgh

An absolutely essential, "user friendly", core title.

The Alliance for Technology Access is a network of community-based resource centers dedicated to providing information and support services to children and adults with disabilities. Toward the furtherance of their mission that have produced Computer And Web Resources For People With Disabilities, now an expanded and thoroughly updated third edition. Computer hardware and software provide children and adults with an unprecedented opportunity to interact with the broader world of work, education, recreation, and socialization. Featured in this superb instructional reference are recommendations for making use of conventional, assistive and information technologies; illustrative personal stories of people using technology in their daily lives; details about state-of-the-art computer technology (including screen enhancements, speech synthesizers and customized keyboards); new and extensively updated listings of Internet resources, publications, support organizations, and vendors. Computer And Web Resources For People With Disabilities is an absolutely essential, core acquisition for personal, professional, academic, community library, health center, and community center disability resources library reference collections.

The High-Performance Computing Act of 1991 by Vice President Al Gore Jr when he was just a young Tennessee Senator is one of the forces behind expanding the US Defense Department's ARPAnet into a personal and professional network of the people. Authors Leslie H Nicoll and Teena H Ouellette show how nursing has taken advantage of the different parts of the people's Internet: File Transfer Protocol, for fall prevention support and handicap; Gopher sites, such as the pioneer Nightingale site; about 300 Listserv health-oriented discussion lists, such as NURSENET and NRSING-L; Telnet, with specific health science libraries accessed by the associated University home page; Usenet health- and nursing-related newsgroups, mostly among the alt.support and sci.med groups; and the World Wide Web, with the AltaVista and Yahoo engines searching for free and with the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research uniquely searching and downloading full-text clinical practice guidelines. COMPUTERS IN NURSING: NURSE'S GUIDE TO THE INTERNET is a one of a kind book that works well with Robert Kiley's MEDICAL INFORMATION ON THE INTERNET.

Implementing Win 2000 technolgies in the real world
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-11-19
This book is about implementing the new technologies of Win 2000 in the real world. The author's exposure and experience in the industry makes this book full of tips in practical implementation. Despite being a Win 2000 MCSE myself, I am enjoying and immensely benefiting reading this book as I go by its pages.

This one sails you through executing the new and difficult-to-implement technologies of Win 2000 like IPSec, NAT, DNS, Certificates services, Terminal services etc. through its nice walkthrough(s). Even basics like MMC have been explained in great detail. Such detail work e.g. devoting 63 pages to IPSec definitely helps concept building.

In summary, an excellent book for the dollars you pay. I hope the author soon attempts a book on Configuring Win 2000 with Active Directory: I for one will keenly look forward to it.

Congressional Directory 2007: 110th Congress, 2nd Session, 2007, Standard Version, State-by-state

Very handy, sprial bound - Great for C-SPAN junkies!
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-23
This Congressional Directory has black and white photos of Senators and Representatives, plus good biographical background info, names of the most important staffers in each office, maps of the congressional districts for all states, email addresses for staff, district/state office information, and much more.

In the front of this wire spiral-bound directory are a very useful legislative process flowchart, a list of the frequently mispronounced names of members of congress, and a handy guide to finding congressional documents online. Has sections on contacting and writing your elected officials.

This is great for C-SPAN junkies and also for anyone who is visting Washington, DC, to meet with their Senators or their Representative - it has a fold-out map of Capitol Hill.

The publisher of this great little book, TheCapitol.Net, also offers live courses in DC about how Congress works and also good research courses for those new to Washington. Their web site, thecapitol.net, also has many pages with thousands of useful links for Congress watchers and visitors to DC.

They also publish the Congressional Deskbook, which is the best single-volume reference on Congress I have seen.

Highly recommended!

An Essential Tool for Getting the Most out of Kansas City
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2002-01-08
This book is a must-have gem. I've been acquainted with Kansas City, my mother's hometown, all my life, and never had any idea of the richness and diversity the city has to offer. This book is an extensively (one could even say obsessively) researched tool that has chapters on every conceivable topic, from the outdoors to religious organizations to fine cuisine. Volunteer opportunities and other ways to really engage in the community abound. Connect with Kansas City is a truly unique resource that will improve your experience in Kansas City whether you are a first time visitor, an infrequent visitor (like myself) or a lifetime resident. The author's insights about the value of "social capital" were clearly a guiding force in both the conception and the implementation of the book. Worth its weight in gold!

The bible of consumer health information
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-25
As a consumer health librarian I can say that this is the absolute bible when it comes to selecting health-related materials. Not just a list of books, this is a wide-ranging source of well-written, well-considered reviews of almost all types of materials (books, CD-ROMs, databases, pamphlets, magazines/newsletters, Spanish-language materials, and more) for the layperson, plus selected sources written for the health professional that would be helpful in the well-stocked consumer health library. There is an extensive section of reviews of complementary/alternative therapy materials, something the faint-of-heart might not have wanted to tackle, but Rees accomplishes it with aplomb. Conspicuous by its absence is a list of consumer health videos, but this would be a huge task in and of itself!

Rees knows his stuff (more importantly, he has known his stuff over time--this is the 6th edition of this book [2000]) and he doesn't play it safe: many of the books he reviews are concerned with controversial theories or therapies, but he reviews them impartially. Most public libraries, all medical/hospital libraries, and many academic libraries can benefit from owning a copy of this book, for collection development purposes and also for patrons to browse. The interested layperson, either a patient or family member, would do well to consult this book when looking for the best books/other materials on your particular topic.

Unique and highly focused guide for non-technical humanists
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1996-11-17
Mike Clark's book is itself a "cultural treasure." It provides beautifully clear and succinct explanations of how to navigate the Internet and the Web specifically so as to harvest the wealth of material that is of interest to humanistic scholars and the culturally committed public alike. Mike is not a computer geek by trade; he's a university professor of humanities, and his knowledge and experience as a scholar, writer, and teacher accrue to make this book highly readable and easy to use. It has an excellent index and table of contents, and the addition in this new edition of an interactive CD-ROM, with narration by Mike, means that even the Web novice can use this book to locate and explore the riches of Cyberspace--literally within minutes. I recommend this book highly to anyone who wants to use the Web to access materials in the arts and humanities...and especially to those folks who don't have the time, patience, or interest to plow through lots of irrelevant and confusing technical details. This book is fun to use! I'm giving it as a Christmas gift to friends who are writers, readers, teachers, and researchers, in particular to those who see themselves as technobumblers and who need this kind of friendly guide to assuage their Cyberphobia. Note: It even leads one to Amazon.com, and a wonderful new way to find and buy books
