Learn SQL Fast.....
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-06
In over 8 years I've never found a SQL book so thoroughly complete for SQL beginners. While the examples are specific to Oracle version 6.0, the principles are still as pertinent for version 8i. Approximately 90% of the teaching and information from this book can be applied to other dbms's. This is a must have for anyone who is just beginning to learn the Oracle SQL language.

It is easy to read this book. The book is well organized. The explainations of concepts, examples, tips are clear and in logical order. I am an OCP DBA with 2 years experience. I have understood Oracle much better and learnt many tuning tips by reading this book. It is especially good for DBAs who have basic tuning knowledge and some experience, want to know more.

This is a good book for everyone!

"Oracle 9i for Windows Handbook," is a good book for me to learn Oracle 9i in Windows environment. When I suddenly found this book in Borders, I was very excited to read it for 1 hour. And then I ordered it online.

I like the author's writing style. Before I read this book, I was very confused about how to create a oracle 9i database manually in Windows 2000. I don't know the commands and registry key in Windows 2000. After reading this book, I get all the answers in this book.

In this book, you will find it very clear to learn how to create a database using DBCA and how to create a database manually. This book also gives me a good idea about how to upgrade from oracle 8/8i to oralce 9i using database migration assistant or using export and import command. The author makes a comment on when is the best time to use them separately. I also learn how to backup the database using cold backup, hot backup and recovery manager.

If you want to go through Oracle 9i and have a hands-on experience in your own PC, I recommand that you use this book as a reference. This book covers a lot of topics, but maybe you will find that's not enoght for you to know Oracle 9i in detail. I still recommend that the beginners read this book.

Starter kit for new DBAs

This collection of scripts is a great starter kit for new DBAs because it contains highly useful code for nearly all of the basic administration, tuning and troubleshooting tasks encountered on the job.

What I like is this isn't just a collection of code on a CD ROM, but each script is carefully explained in the text of the book. For someone like myself who is still in OCP training the explanations are almost as valuable as the code. Although the title claims that the scripts are for Oracle 9i, they also work with 8i, and the book covers what modifications (if any) need to be made to use each script in earlier versions of Oracle.

Words of Wisdom

Reviewed by Dr. Carol Hoyer for Reader Views (1/08)

Author R.W. Klamm is a man who is filled with humor, wisdom and insight. His ultimate goal with "Outfox the Kids for Fun and Profit" is to let parents know that we can make mistakes with raising our children, but not all is lost. We learn from our mistakes. He reminds us that parenting is not always about the desires of the parent(s) (materialistic) but of raising children who are independent, good problem-solvers and emotionally stable.

Klamm starts his book by stating the obvious-- if you want to raise healthy, well-rounded children you need to relook at your parenting style and relationship with your children. He gives the reader basic principles on raising children. These are not anything new to parents, but are things we sometimes forget.

Through humorous stories, poetry and real-life examples, Klamm discusses peer pressure, sex, problem-solving and many other subjects that we as parents will encounter when we become parents. All of the stories in "Outfox the Kids for Fun and Profit" are interesting to read and have humor, but the undertone is one of providing guidance and problem-solving skills. At the end of each story there are words of wisdom.

Outstanding reference for an outstanding database product.

The venerable Paradox for DOS set the standards by which all database products are measured today in terms of power vs. ease of use. This even includes the newer Windows-based tools. If you or anyone at your office still uses Paradox for DOS today then this book MUST be part of your library. I was the technical editor for the 4.0-based edition of the book and the quality and quantity of useful information in this text has to been seen to be truly appreciated.

This is a definitive book about a difficult subject by one of the people who knows the subject best. Clear and well-written, it is just as relevant to the most current editions of Paradox as it was to the version for which it was written (v5). It's not aimed at beginners, but rather at working developers who will appreciate learning about "things you can't do with queries, and how to do them!" and similar topics from someone who really knows.
