Practical Guide to Data Quality
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-03
This books brings a perspective to the data quality issue that I had never truly appreciated. More importantly it gives the reader suggestions as to how to understand the impact of poor data on their organizations as well as specific techniques to make it better. I would recommend this to any person who is looking to improve any aspect of their business as most issues will eventually come back to ensuring quality information to internal and external customers.

For both business leaders and information professionals

I found a lot of great material in this book, appealing to my interests in both business leadership and the more technical aspects of data quality. From the perspective of business leadership, I find it to be a very helpful tutorial and overview of the subject of data quality. It covers a lot of ground, ranging from discussions of data quality management concepts to specific suggestions for implementing data quality programs. From the perspective of a consulting professional, I find it to be an excellent reference, with depth in key topics of interest to process, information and quality professionals. In particular, the discussions about the "data life cycle", the technical definitions of data and the "dimensions of data quality" gave me new insights into data quality management and improvement.

A must read for any technical manager who is responsible for a system that uses replication or is planning to do so. Technologists (DBA, SA, DA, Developer,..) will also gain valuable insight into the world of data replication that the vendor documentation does not provide. The decision tree (pg215) and the case study take this book over the top.

"The Only Game in Town" situation keeps it from being a 10

Review Date: 1997-09-08
It's tough to find an entire book on the subject of replication. Most database books give only a chapter's worth of lip service to the topic, if that much, and then move on to the other "important" chapters. I can't even count how many "advanced" database books I have that devote an entire chapter on introducing SQL, yet skip this advanced topic. Distributed apps require distributed data and this book defintiely covers a lot of ground in the right direction.

The only thing that kept me from giving it a 10 is the hope that something better may come along. But even if it does, I'll still thumb through Buretta's some more. The Case Studies are a particularly good feature, and one actually applied to the situation I needed resolving when I picked this book up

Anyone who has read Brackett previous books knows that his contribution to the data quality arena is fundamental.

This books is important because it states the business case for quality data in clear terms and also provides tools and guidelines to succeed in that long (very long ) journey

Thanks Mike - Great book!

Once again Michael Brackett does a great job. I've often thought that Michael is a perfectionist. However, I see more clearly now that he is a wounded soldier that has experienced the battles of data administration.

You will find this book exciting - I mean is you love the topic. Michael dictates the "right" way to set up data administration and the ramifications of not doing so.

The book is full of suggestions and pointed comments. I believe that Michael knows the subject as well as anyone, and has a vengence to correct the chaos that is currently prevalent in this area.

Buy it! Read it! Then re-read it! Wait about 6 months and read it again until it sinks in. He's right on target with this one.

This is the best Filemaker book ever written!
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 1999-04-25
Unlike many other Filemaker books, this book explains how to use a database to get work done. The author explains how and why to design a database and not just how to create a layout, etc. By now the book is out of date, having been written for the flat file versions of Filemaker. It is still absolutely useful especially for someone who needs to accomplish real work with Filemaker.

Good book with a different way of using FMPro
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-10
I liked this book because Mr Singer persents a different way of thinking when using FMPro. I especially enjoyed the parts about how to use boolean logic to make FMPro do what you want with a minimum of overhead. This is not a beginner FMPro book. The advanced nature of the book is not so much explaining FMPro's features, but rather, how to use logic when scripting and performing calculations to make FMPro do what you want. Definately a good book to read and understand. Then perhaps, you can pass it on to a friend or co-worker. It's not really a reference as much as a paradigm shift on how to use FMPro.

There are few authors write about Database Development. So it's too hard to find the book like this. I needed and bought the book but got a little useful. The reader's feeling, for sure,is not good. So the author must know their feeling. It's you. :)

this book surprisingly combines good introduction to databases in general and to Borland's DBMS. Very good for all experienced programmers who want to use databases in their own programs.

A MUST-READ IN CLIENT/SERVER BOOKS!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1998-12-17
This is a great reference to understand the client/server database model and some brief data warehouse architecture. I really appreciate the author's vision to see the system building like a "industrial factory" involving world-class manufacturing concepts like Just-In-Time, Success Circles, etc. It's a new perspective of the system life-cycle. Covers very well aspects of relational database concepts, not focusing on a single vendor, with finance and manufacturing concepts. Anyone who was to understand client/server computing MUST READ IT. I didn't find any similar book in the market. Very professional.

Excellent foundation for database design!

Review Date: 2004-03-13
I used this book and even had a class from Gary Hansen. This book is well written and has been the foundation of my early career since I have been designing and building a corporate e-commerce site for the past several years. I can't count how many meetings I have been in where the concepts in this book have come into play. I'm even more baffled by those that are programmers that lack the skills and concepts taught in this book. The book has great examples and walks through explaining some potentionally confusing concepts in a manner that is understandable.

I'm now looking to buy a copy so that my co-workers can learn the database skills they really should have.

Very clear, lots of samples

I was using some database products in an "informal" way
since 10 years ago. This book helped me to clarify several
concepts needed for a good foundation in database design.
The examples are very well designed, most involving "classical"
situations, but presented with several degrees of dificulty.
The style is a bit dense at first, but easily readable.

This recommentation is obvious, but not always followed: read
this kind of material before trying to learn from the database

"concepts" included in the specific product's guide.

A beautiful mind

I am just buying this book today. So why am I writing a review? Because everything said about Chris Date by Data Guy is absolutely right on. I too have all of his previous books, including his gold standard text book on database systems and his previous "Writings" books. Reading CJ Date is why I learned to love database. He's brilliant, and his logic really is a beautiful thing to read. There is no t uncrossed, no i undotted. One of my favorite writings and one I recommend to everyone is called "A Table Without Columns". We all get that you can have a table without rows. But when you understand that we can have a table without columns, and why, you begin to understand the brilliance of the relational model.

I agree with Data Guy - buy all of his Writings books especially. They are self-contained and every one you read will give you a better and deeper understanding of the relational model. And yes, it does matter in real life. Just think about the myriad failed or limping applications that exist because people so readily dismiss these important principles.

Another Great Compilation From Chris Date

Review Date: 2007-02-05
Chris Date's new book is essentially the best of Chris Date's recent musings on database management and the relational model. The book anthologizes Date's prodigious output over the past seven years.

Anyone who is working with database systems ought to be familiar with the work of Chris Date. He is an independent author, lecturer, researcher, and consultant specializing in relational database technology. His outstanding book, An Introduction to Database Systems, is a standard in the field and is used by many universities to teach database management. His impact on the field has been profound.

Anyway, this book is a treasure. The book gallantly gallops from subject to subject covering many pertinent issues related to databases and DBMS implementation. The book tackles subjects both familiar and not-so-familiar in an authoritative and easy to read manner. If you think you completely understand SQL you owe it to yourself to read the chapters on SQL and relational misconceptions.

Yes, some of this material can be found for free on the web. But not all of it. And, even if all of it was freely available I would still want to own the book to have it readily available, all in one place.

This book is basically the latest in a series of books that Date has written like this for Addison-Wesley under the title Relational Database Writings. Date has moved to a new publisher (and a new title), but the content is as vital as ever. I own all of his previous titles and I heartily recommend this new one, too. If you work with databases, Date on Database will surely enlighten, entertain and educate you. You owe it to yourself and your career to read this book, as well as Chris Date's many other books.

Review for DB2 9 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows Database Administration: Certification Study Guide

This is the best book for preparing for Exam 731. I have used Roger Sanders' books in the past (viz. for v8 exams - 700 and 701). This book, like the other ones, is lucidly written and easy to understand. Also, since this is an exam preparation book; he has sample questions after every chapter. There is a 150 question set at the end of the book for practice that goes through all the main concepts (with answers too !!). If you preparing to get DB2 v9, buy this. (Also, for reference purposes you can check this out: Understanding DB2(R): Learning Visually with Examples (2nd Edition) )
