Michele Serros successfully encapsulates the inner conflicts and frienship demands of adolescents with a dash of conflict and a Latinidad twist. Clever Spanish slang weaved in between teenage "hip" lingo makes for a fun read about how one girl, Evie, struggles with the pressures of high school. Her socio-economic status, surburan family lifestyle, and beachside residence illustrates a different Mexican-American youth than we are used to reading. It's refreshing! And necessary. The emphasis on Mexican culture underlying the message in this book clearly demonstrates Serros' ability to unite experiences. You will find many similarities to the characters in this book, regardless of where you're from or how long ago you were in high school. Satisfy your curiosity and buy this innovative and thoughtful novel. Read the book then buy it for your daughter, your niece and all of the Latina youth you know. They will thank you.

"Honey Blond Chica" is a very thoughtful and insightful book that succeeds in offering an honest portrayal of teen-age life, and doesn't talk down to the reader. The pressures of sex are discussed openly in a chapter that articulates the fears and anxieties, but also the potent cocktail of emotions, which make up teen-aged life. Young readers will enjoy this book whether they even know what a "chica" is or not, as the teen-age experience if fairly universal. However, young second and third generation Latino readers will find bits of life with which to relate that are sorely lacking in the literary field (especially young adult novels!). Michele Serros is an excellent writer and young readers will quickly consume this novel as they anticipate the second in the series which will soon be on shelves. Kudos to Serros for writing a novel for the young Latino audiences in America. Usually books are only written that shoot for extremely young audiences or older audiences, completely missing the untapped teen-aged Latin audience. Here's to hoping that this novel is the start of a trend of young adult Latino novels!

Ahhh, to be a teenager again; the friendships that can turn on a moment's notice, the puppy love, the parties, the self discovery... all universal themes but written about with a twist in Honey Blonde Chica. It's very refreshing to read a young adult novel where the main characters are Latino, yet the focus isn't on discrimination or financial hardships, but rather just being a teenager. Like another reviewer said, those books certainly are important and have their place, but Honey Blonde Chica is a nice change.

A great example of being true to yourself

Michele Serros has always been my favorite writer, since I read her book How to be a Chicana Role Model. So it was natural for me to read her new book Honey Blonde Chica in less than a week just like I did with the other two. I love this story because anyone can relate to Evie(The main character) because I think that everyone has gone through that stage in your life where you want to be cool and fit in and sometimes you let peer pressure affect you. I love this book because it shows another perspective of Latinos, a different culture, a little bit mixed with living in the U.S. but staying true to yourself and your culture. The humor that Michele Serros uses is so cute because she speaks from a teenager point of view. I also wish I had this book when I was 16 to read and be guided by. I strongly recommend this book to everyone because it's a great book and you will have fun reading it.

Being that I'm a older hispanic girl, I really enjoyed this book! I would have liked to have this book as a teen.

The girls were true to form. About how they talk and treat friends. I thought this was just a good read. And am looking forward to the next book.

Transforming, Humorous, An Amazing Testimony

Review Date: 2007-04-03
In this no holds barred narrative Burton Barr bares his soul in hopes that the reader will be spared some of the heart ache he experienced and caused others. He writes in an intimate conversational style that draws the reader into his life as he shares his testimony. For over twenty years Burton struggled with the results of his bad choices.

Like the prodigal son of the scriptures Burton remembered his (heavenly) father's love and the call of God on his life. He again responded to that call. His life has turned around. Instead of pursuing a life of drug abuse and drug dealing he is now heading up a ministry to prisoners.

Hoodlum preacher is the story of Burton Barr's full circle from the call to preach as a child, a period of rebellion, restitution, and reunion. This is a book for the person in the street or in the pew. It warns of the danger of Satan's snares in contrast with the message of God's love, His grace, sufficiency, and peace.

For fellow readers who love a little bit of action and intrigue combined with a spiritual uplifting at the end, this book is for you.
Full of pain and anguish, The Hoodlum Preacher, is a story of a journey of a young man who was able to change his life, his way of thinking, and eventually, his salvation. Rev. Burton essentially became a real-life "Prodigal Son".
I highly recommend this book to anyone struggling with anything and who wants to find a better way of life. This book is also good for anyone who just wants to read a good book. :)

Burton Barr, Jr. felt he had been called to preach at the tender age of nine. He preached to a captive audience, his little brother, Ralph. His mother told him he'd have to wait for God's calling but he continued to practice his sermons. As a teenager, he joined the church and actually begins to preach. Then things took a strange turn and he began to drink, smoke marijuana and cigarettes. Not too much later, he began trying cocaine, heroin, PCP, crack and whatever else he could get his hands on. He stole from his employers, wrote bad checks and conned his relatives which resulted in numerous arrests. In an attempt to turn his life around, he joined the Marines but continued his behavior of stealing, conning and drugging. The Marines sent him to the brig and eventually to Leavenworth. On many occasions, he attempted to get clean, get his marriage back on tract and keep a good job but each time he met with failure. At last, on one of his stints in prison, he met a preacher who had that certain "something" that he couldn't put his finger on and as a result Burton Barr, Jr. began to see the light.

THE HOODLUM PREACHER is the amazing story of one man's descent into the hell of the drug world and his ultimate redemption at the hands of God. The lessons he learned are good for all of us. Even if we aren't guilty of Burton's vices, we have all done something that is not right. Barr lets us know God can see good in us and we can be saved from ourselves. Barr does all this without being preachy or overbearing. It is a very good book and so very uplifting. I enjoyed every word, even as I cringed when Barr sank back into his abyss. It is well worth picking up.

This book is so good it's scary it teaches stuff from poses to move ment step by step so you can get it really easyly. At first I was terrible at drawing movement so every piture I drew was a charater standing but then I got this book at the libray. And now I know how to draw people jumping running and much more. Very helpful and useful it should have ten stars. Cool as it gets the person who made this book worked for Studio Ghibli!

I must say, I really enjoyed this book. I love how the book displays the body in different views and in different positions. This is especially useful when you can't draw a character from a certain sitting position. For those who are a little concerned about nudity, don't worry. There is some nudity, but it's mostly the guys. I really wouldn't call it nudity though, since they do not draw the nipples on the females at all. It's merely a silhouette of the naked form. Other than that, this book is a must have. It really shows daily activities (like the book suggests)it also has some activities like karaoke. I wouldn't call that a daily activity, but that pose can come in handy if one wishes to draw a karaoke scene in their manga.

Another excellent book

The third book in the series picks up right after the last with perspective. The first chapter is dedicated to it, and provides many great tips. It then moves on to basic character movements such as walking, running, sitting, sleeping, and much more. From there it even goes into greater detail by showing you variations of the previously mentioned movements, and a lot of them. After all, no two people are made the same. This is a great book for any artist period who wants to learn the different poses of the body.

A book worth your money

Ozawa does a wonderful job again! He inititally starts the book on drawing your character using perspective giving a numerous amount of pointers and examples. Then giving basic action poses (walking, running, sitting, standing, laying down, etc) and going into variations of those actions by using multiple examples of characters. A typical example page consists of a stick figure in a particular pose, a block figure, and the actual finished character in the same pose. Front and back, or other view of the pose is common and he even gives pointers and tips of details to look out for.

Besides teaching you how to draw real believable characters, this book is an excellent edition that you may later use as a reference book for poses. Like his earlier books, Ozawa covers nudity tastefully and this book can be used by young artists without fear. A book well worth the money, imo.

Christopher Hart's how to draw books are all wonderful. I own this one and a couple others and I often go back to them when I just can't get my sketches perfect. When I first received them I couldn't tear myself away. I was drawing up a storm 24-7. I've drawn realistic pictures all my life, but until buying these books, I'd never been able to whip out anything cartoony. Unexpectedly, his instructions and tips on cartoon drawing also helped me out in my realistic drawing and creativity.

I can't say enough about this book! You won't be disappointed! It's well worth the price and more. One great thing about it is that not only does the author really know his stuff, he's managed to present it wonderfully. It's a fun & easy read!!!

This book is by far the best one in my collection:) It's stuffed with inspirational pictures and it's very easy to read:) It took me only about a half hour to create my very own cartoon character after reading a bit in this book:D

The step-by-step drawing guides in here are so easy to follow, and the book also show you different degrees of hardships in creating a character. You have the easily drawn characters, the medium hard-to-draw characters, and the really hard-to-draw characters:S

I'd say i was already in the "Medium" category when i bought this book, so the easily drawn characters were just to simple for me to even bother with. But still, they make good reference::)

If i am to say something about what audience this book is aimed for, then i'd have to say it's for beginners and people like me(A bit past beginner:p). There are VERY few hard-to-draw pictures in here, so i'm gonna have to buy another book soon if i keep progressing like i do:p

Different animals you can learn to draw from this book: Cats, dogs, horses, sharks, elephants, lions, tigers, bears and a few other critters...

I love this book :) I do not regret buying it at all:) I can actually REALLY reccomend this book to people who are out for learning this subject:)

How to Raise Your Child's Emotional Intelligence: 101 Ways to Bring Out the Best in Your Children and Yourself is the best parenting book we've read. As new parents of a toddler, we have found the tips and practical ideas in this book to be extremely helpful. We also liked the 101 short chapters, which made the book a delight to read. The book is filled with ideas on how parents can encourage the development of emotional intelligence through simple child rearing techniques & also through their own behaviors which model emotional intelligence. How to Raise Your Child's Emotional Intelligence also uses poetry, short stories, and quotes from men and women from all walks of life -- from Albert Einstein, Mother Teresa, Hellen Keller, to Antoine de Saint-Exupery's "Little Prince" to cleverly reinforce the concepts in an entertaining and often inspirational manner. We really loved this book. While we have already given other books away, this is one book we intend to keep and use throughout our coming years as parents. It is a book for everyone, from all walks of life. Don't miss this book!

Are you looking for a book, which will provide you with help in raising children who will behave, as you would like them to, and grow into emotionally mature adults and improve your emotional intelligence at the same time? Then, this is the book you have been searching for. I have never written a book review before. But, after reading this book, I felt compelled to do so. Why? Because I have read a lot of self-help books over the years and never got anything out of them. Either because I felt the suggestions in the books were impractical or were not necessary. However, this book not only presents the principles, which will help to improve the emotional intelligence of you and your children in a practical, fresh, new, humorous, and imaginative way. It reached out and touched my heart in such a way that it inspired me to do what it suggests. For example, in Chapter 2 - Choose Love Over Conflict in Your Relationship With Your Children and Spouse, the following question is asked. If the world were to watch a 10-hour video of the last ten hours of your interaction with your spouse and children, would you be proud of what they saw? Furthermore, the point is made that the world will never see that video, but your children will watch hundreds of real-life hours of such interaction - will you be proud of what they see? These words touched me so profoundly that every so often I re-read this chapter. I do so to remind myself to set a good example for my children and to behave in a way that my spouse and children can be proud of. This is just a small sample of the many insights the book has to offer for improving the emotional intelligence of you and your children. I highly encourage you to buy this book. You will be happy you did.

I love the Dame Frevisse series, and this new book in this long-running series is just as meticulously written as any of the others. The story is a little different because Dame Frevisse is not sought out to solve a murder, even though a murder has been done. She and her fellow nun from St. Frideswide's (Dame Johane) are visiting at a manor house and are serving as comfort and moral support to the lady of the keep. But even though this lady has lost her husband, and she and her sons and daughters are trying to put their life back together, there is no mourning here. Dame Frevisse though can't let it lie. Murder has been done, and she must find out what happened. On her quest for the truth she finds a family with many, many secrets and deceptions. Something is terribly wrong here, and she doesn't know at first how to handle it. She does manage to figure out the secrets and deceptions, and she solves the case, but it's not a solution that can be shared with the officials. Margaret Frazer has done her usual exhaustive research, and that is what makes this series so wonderful! I recommend it hightly.

"The Hunter's Tale" is another superbly written entry in Margaret Frazer's series of medieval mysteries featuring the crime-solving nun Dame Frevisse. The year is 1434, and the reader is immersed into life on the small manor of Woodrim, where the master of the manor Sir Ralph Woderove has been brutally beaten to death while hunting on his own land. At first, even Sir Ralph's family is not too distressed by his death, as the reader quickly learns that Sir Ralph was a dispicable person who cared more for his hunting dogs than for his family. One of the key plots of the story is how Sir Ralph tries to control his family from beyond the grave by the terribly restrictive terms of his will. When a second death occurs, Sister Frevisse and another nun, Sister Johane, accompany Lady Anneys, Sir Ralph's widow and her daughter Ursula back to their manor, in order to provide some comfort to the family. Even though several weeks have passed since Sir Ralph's murder, Dame Frevisse can't help but get involved in trying to identify the murderer. The plot is well-written, and I was quite surprised by the ending of the story.

In addition to the intriguing mystery, I enjoyed the meticulous details provided on everyday life in 15th century England. The theme of this story, as indicated by the title, focuses on the English hunt and there is a lot of information given on the breeding and training of the hunting dogs. This story is an extremely enjoyable read.

Start at the beginning, with this series, but definitely start. It is a worthwhile trip! The characterization is believable, the plot, too, and every time, hands down, the villain of the piece ends up being the one I did not want it to be! How does she do it? They are thought-provoking and entertaining at the same time. A terrific series.

We used Steve Fry's book, "I Am: the Unveiling of God" as the focus of our Bible study during the past year. Reading ahead, I was able to link each chapter into corresponding Bible passages to strengthen the concept. What an amazing year we have had. We celebrated an earnest seeking of God and witnessed huge changes in the lives of the group members. We all read the two chapters early in the week and then allowed God time to let it sink in before the next meeting. As the year started, most were new to the group and a little aprehensive over the prospect of being drawn too closely in relationship with God. As the year progressed, the sessions became electric with shared experiences and reports of how the Holy Spirit had used each person since we last met. We have come to expect to see God in every aspect of our daily experience and He has shown Himself amazing in our lives. I would recommend this book strongly for people who feel a little dry in their Christian walk and need a new dynamism in their lives.

Steve Fry's incisive insights made me understand many things from the Bible that I read before but never truly grasped. I felt much closer to Jesus by the end of the book and trusted Him more.

A must-read for anyone with a heart for God

In this book, Steve Fry has given us a wonderful eye-opening to the nature of God. Drawn from his keen sense of theology, which comes from a knowledge of the Scriptures (see 2 Timothy 2:15), Fry helps the reader to understand different facets of God's character, in addition to how He relates to us through them.

In this day and age, so many of us Christians have lost sight of the wonder of God in our daily lives. This book suggests that the root cause of that is our lack of a true relationship with God, and thus our watered-down knowledge of who He truly is. If you are desiring more of the fervency and joy in your life that the early church had, this book is for you. I would also recommend it to anyone who already does possess that passion, so that he or she may continue to develop it further.

As you read this book, don't approach it solely as a theological work on the attibutes of God--also let the Scriptural concepts of God change your heart and life as you read it. If you do this with an earnestly seeking mind and heart, I believe God will use it to draw you closer to Himself by showing you more of Who He is.

If your a Garfield fan this book is a must! It's great!! It gives you lots of info on what's become of Garfield over the years. Jim Davis is the "King of Humor" to have come up with so many funny ideas. I was a fan when I was growing up and now my step-kids are all fans thanks to all my old books.
I bought this book for the kids but I ended up reading it as well. This book is the link of where Garfield came from, and celabrates his wonderful 25 years.
Thanks for making people laugh for so many years all around the world Jim Davis!

If there is one thing from my childhood that has remained a part of my life as an adult, it is my love for that fat, orange, cranky tabby cat named Garfield. I recently received "In Dog Years I'd Be Dead: Garfield at 25" as a present. It is a coffee table book that looks back at the history of the fat, orange tabby. This book is an extremely comprehensive look at everything Garfield. It goes into details about everything from commercial ads to the classic cartoon series "Garfield and Friends". As a diehard Garfield fan and an artist, I appreciated seeing the earlier, rough sketches of Garfield strips. This book may be a couple of years old but it certainly covers pretty much everything that the fat cat has given to the public. I especially loved seeing some of the more sillier photos of Jim Davis and Garfield. Another favorite moment is the section with all the counterfeit Garfield products. For some reason, I find something fascinating about something as ugly as those counterfeit products. "In Dog Years I'd Be Dead..." is the ideal coffee table book for diehard Garfield fans. Great intro by columnist Dave Barry.

I found this book to be a very entertaining read however I do get concerned at the way Mr Herman disposes of his main characters when they no longer suit his purposes.

In real life people do retire and live happily ever after-not every person has to suffer a horific death to keep readers enthralled in the tale being told.

GREAT & EXPLOSIVE ACTIONS !!!

This is an action-packed thriller for readers who like fast actions and war scenes. Unlike Tom Clancy, (who slow down the actions with too much tech-data), Richard Herman does not waste too much time to bring the readers right into the actions. The flow of the story is smooth and the writer keeps readers interested at all times. I would recommand reading Dark Wing before reading Iron Gate (although the story is not as smooth, it gives you more information about the main characters).

Every bit as intense as the new WWII airwar novel I just read, "The Triumph and the Glory", and as action-packed as any of Clancy's best, "Iron Gate" is a super book, I was very impressed with it.

Dale Brown and Tom Clancy are great, but Richard Herman is the best! His only equal is Stephen Coonts. The only problem I have with Herman is that he kills off his main characters (eg., Muddy Waters and Jack Locke). I am presently reading Iron Gate and cannot put it down. Keep up the good work Mr. Herman!

Delightful true story!

This book is a cross between "Tuesdays With Morrie" and "Father Joe." It is a memoir or narrative nonfiction about a young girl who is in an abusive environment at home and seeks comfort and saftey in her pastor's study.

The book is so well written and so easy to read. I liked the short chapters, each covering a different topic that the author discussed with Pastor Rogahn. Ms. Ludwig doesn't try to make herself look good and gets into some of the same scrapes and confronts many of the same dilemmas in the 1970's as teenagers do today.

If this book was not published by an unknown publisher and if it had a more appealing title, it would most likely be on the NYT best-seller list. The only disappointment was that the author only covers conversations from the first three years of her 12-year friendship with Pastor Rogahn. My only hope is that she'll write a sequel that picks up where this book leaves off.

If you liked "Tuesdays With Morrie," you'll love this book. It's honest, uplifting, and keeps you thinking long after you've turned the last page. And it's not just for teens. It's for anyone who enjoys a heartwarming story of friendship.

I loved this book!

I really loved this book! It seems like all the Christan books for kids my age are about obeying your parents and not going to far on a date and all that stuff. I learned alot from the paster and the auther without the book being so churchy or religous. This book was fun. I wish the auther would write another book continueing where this one leaves off.

Great book for teens

The reference to "books" in the title is a lead-in to topics of a more serious nature. The book is aimed at teenagers and the problems that may confront them.

The author, a teenager in the 1970s, came from a troubled home. In desperation, she reached out to her pastor for help. He was the Reverand Kenneth W. Rogahn of Messiah Lutheran Church in St. Louis, MO. The story is about the many types of issues--guilt, forgiveness, gossip, parents, and others--that faced her as a teenager. It shows how a very compassionate pastor responded from a Christian perspective, with answers framed in a way that makes it easy for teenagers of today to apply them to their own challenges, stresses, and doubts.

This book should be of much interest to teenagers who are reluctant to seek counsel from their parents or to those whose parents have been of no help.

An Excellent Resource for Youth Leaders

This book is one that I wish every teen would read. The person who wrote it is one of their own, so she knows exactly what it's like to be them. Pastor Rogahn reached out to young Judi when she needed help the most, he gave her wise guidance in a non-threatening way, and she is now passing his wisdom on to the next generation. What a wonderful tribute to such a Godly man!

Powerful book about a Christian gentleman and troubled girl

These are the brief memoirs of Judi Hayes (now J. Taylor Ludwig)--a girl from a dysfunctional home. She is the fifth (and youngest) child of an alcoholic and abusive father. Between the ages of 13 and 16, Judi was employed by Rev. Dr. Ken Rogahn, the pastor of Messiah Lutheran Church and School in Saint Louis so that the many books in his office might be dusted, arranged, and re-arranged. As Judi would find out, the purpose of these years of employment is not so that Pastor Rogahn would have his books arranged in ridiculous fashions (e.g. arranged by color, arranged by size, etc.), but so that he could be a friend to Judi--mentoring her, giving her a positive adult male role model, and teaching her about her Christian faith (both the doctrine, and what faith looks like in action).

This is a brief, yet powerful 106 page book, divided into three sections ("Eighth Grade," "Ninth Grade," and "Tenth Grade"), with each section divided into 7-10 chapters of 2-6 pages each. Each chapter is an excerpt of summary of a conversation between Judi and Pastor Roghan. Some chapters contain brief epilogues about things like Judi's father's death in 2002 or her divorce and remarriage.

As previously mentioned, "It Was Never About the Books" is a powerfully written book. Both Judi and Pastor Roghan are three-dimensional characters who the reader quickly cares about. The topics of conversation are wide and range from the Lord's Supper to homosexuality; from borrowing and returning to a physical fight between Judi's father and brother. Taylor captures the teenage thought process and manner of speaking so accurately that I cannot help but picture some of the teenagers I've had the privilege of knowing during my years as a coach and teacher. She asks tough questions, she "gets it" at times, and is clueless at others. As this reviewer is a new pastor, Pastor Rogahn is a bit of an inspiration. He shows love as well as compassion, he shows wisdom as well as a willingness to learn, he shows empathy while he stands firm in his beliefs. This reader wishes the brief excerpts would have gone on further or that Judi wouldn't have quit, or that she would more fully flesh out her own spiritual development.

In all, this is a book that I would not hesitate to recommend to anyone. It's a simple book, but it is by no means simplistic. Although I read it in a couple of hours, I will return to it quite often. It is a forceful, yet easily-accessible book that deserves the widest readership. Highly recommended.
