More information than one could dream of...

I first purchased this book back when the series was still in it's early days and was actively being produced and aired on a weekly basis. I sat down with this book after getting home and started reading... and reading... and reading. I couldn't put it down. I was amazed at how in-depth this book was. I was astounded to learn that many of the shipboard systems are based on actual scientific theory and not just some dreamed up "widget" to make it all work together. Sure they took a little license here and there to create devices to work with others but it's done in such a way that you'd actually believe it existed. But from other publications I've seen from Sternbach & Okuda, you would expect nothing else.

Also, As other reviews have stated, later copies of this book my not be as clear or well defined as this one... Make sure you examine before you buy.

Tech Manuals are rather dull as they go, but I enjoyed this book. I'm somewhat of a newbie to Star Trek, and indulge in the technical side. Which is why I bought it(not from amazon). I enjoy reading everything in it. I wish it were in full color though.

I bought the first book in 1991 and was very well pleased. Several years later, I lost it. I recently saw this one in a search and decided to purchase it. Much to my extreme disappointment, it was not what I was expecting. All of the color was gone and the text within the black ovals was hardly legible. There is a page which is supposed to have a picture of our spiral galaxy on it, it looks more like an ink smudge. The entire book looks like it was copied on a five year old copy machine.

If you're replacing a copy, find one published in 1991 that's in good condition.

A must have for Trekers

Highly recommended for freshmen at Star Fleet Academy (and for Trekkers everywhere).

For a couple of years I was a member of a local science fiction society in part just to see if there was any other science fiction comparable in quality to Star Trek (in whatever series, whether The Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space 9, Voyager, or Enterprise). The answer is No, Non, Nyet, Nada, Lo. If Star Trek is like graduate school, then most other science fiction is like pre-school. Or if Star Trek is like a blues master, then other science fiction sounds like the noise created by a hip hop "artist."

The attention to detail and the care in presentation of Star Trek are represented very well in this Technical Manual. There are 17 chapters: USS Enterprise Introduction, Spacecraft Structure, Command Systems, Computer Systems, Warp Propulsion Systems, Impulse Propulsion Systems, Utilities and Auxiliary Systems, Communications, Transporter Systems, Science and Remote Sensing Systems, Tactical Systems, Environmental Systems, Crew Support Systems, Auxiliary Spacecraft Systems, USS Enterprise Flight Operations, Emergency Operations, and Conclusion. There is a fine Afterword by Rick Berman, the Executive Producer of Star Trek. There is also an Index and Key to Acronyms, and a list of Units of Measure. Illustrations abound.

The logical consistency and logical extrapolation and creative imagination shown in Star Trek represent human beings at their best and brightest. If you like thinking about the far future, this Technical Manual is for you.

An important point in Klingon history

A scroll recovered from an archeological site throws into doubt the story of Kahless the Unforgettable, who is revered by the Klingons. The clone of Kahless enlists the aid of Captain Picard and Lieutenant Worf to prevent opportunists from using the occasion to effect a coup d'etat.

Although his prose is frequently clunky, author Michael Jan Friedman passes the test of a Star trek author, which is whether his novel would make an effective addition to the filmed canon. He has a firm grasp of the characters and his story fills an important gap in Trek history.

This Audio Book Made My Long Drive a lot Shorter!!!

I've decided to get some of the Audiobooks of Star Trek novels that don't peak my interest. I am not a big fan of Audiobooks anyway so only the books that I will probably never get around to reading are the ones that I am going to be listening too. A friend of mine can get Audiobook real cheap. So I downloaded Kahless on my ipod and I was on the road.

I have heard nothing but good things about Michael Jan Friedman and I even own several of his novels but I haven't had a chance to read any of them. So I figured this would be a nice introduction, and it certainly was. I am not a big Worf fan... he's okay... but every since he punked out in Skin of Evil during season one I have never been able to respect him to the fullest. So that's why this book about the klingons was not a must read.

It started absolutely fascinating as the legend of Kahless was proved to be make believe. A scroll was found that pretty much said that everything klingons believed about Kahless was not true. This bit of information could break up the empire forever. So the "current" Kahless who is a clone of the original sets out to seek the truth and keep the empire in one piece. However, he needs help so Worf feels it is his duty to find out the truth. Picard also joins in the quest to find out the truth of the legend of Kahless and the conspiracy that is threatening the empire.

As far as in the Audiobook the only characters from TNG is Picard, Worf (they are in it throughout) and Riker and Troi have cameos. All four are written extremely well. With the help of Kevin Conway (narrator) it was very easy to imagine the story that is playing out right into front you. The fight scenes were explained by the author and narrator with a lot of feeling. The other klingon characters were introduced and handled well too. As with all Audiobooks I feel that a lot was missing. I serously doubt that I would ever give an audiobook above 3 stars. However, I really enjoyed this adventure and if you are a Next Generation fan then I think you will too. I recommend reading the book. This story was actually to good to just do the Audio on. I have just purchased the book and will get around to reading it soon.

The Three stars is for the Audiobook I think the book itself will get a much better score.

This book begs for a sequel!

In this novel by Michael Jan Friedman we get to see the truth behind the legend. The novel is based on the events from the TV episode. The lie that is the legend and the truth are separated in this story. If you like Klingon battle scenes and history as it happened this was one of the first Klingon books of it's time. It's surprising to be that MJF wasn't allowed to expand on this concept. Currently, R. A. DeCandido writes about our favorite Klingons. However I'd still like to see a few by Friedman.

An untold story of a God

Klingon mythos are treated on the series as a footnote rather than an established fact. This Novel seperates the man from the myth.If you follow Star Trek closely like I do then you can easily recognized the legend of Kahless and instead of unknown references and stories about him, you'll get the truth from his own words.

It's amazing how well this Novel is written and how they really paid attention to detail. All the stories told always have a motitum of truth behind them as well as the actual truth inserted. You'll really see who Kahless was as a man and how he would in the coming centuries is remembered as a savior of the Klingon Empire and celebrated as a God.

Even the side story with Riker,Troi and Alexander Rozenko is really well done and doesn't suffers from the pitfalls of the side stories from previos ST Novels.

But the main plot will have reading until exhaustion. It's one of those rare Novels you simply can't put down. And if you're a huge Klingon fan like I am you have to read this Novel. One of the best Star Trek Novels in my collection and one that you can't aford to pass up.

Read and enjoy. You won't be disapointed I promise.

You had to know if Spock could meet the image of Surak, father of all the Vulcans now hold to be true, then we should not have been surprised that Worf would get to meet Kahless the Unforgettable. However, when the most famous Klingon of them all was resurrected via cloning in the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Rightful Heir," Kahless 2.0 became the Emperor of the Empire again and a symbolic but still unifying figure. "Kahless" is a "STNG" novel by Michael Jan Friedman (who wrote the comic book for DC), are purports to provide the truth behind the legend of the Klingon Empire's greatest warrior (and did you know they have trademarked the word "Klingon"?).

"Kahless" is a double-tracked novel, where we begin in "The Modern Age" of "STNG," and then go back to "The Heroic Age" in which the original Kahless lived. The story takes place in the eighth year of Jean-Luc Picard's command of the "Enterprise-D," which means it takes place between the events of the show's final episode, "All Good Things," and before what happens in the theatrical film "Star Trek Generation." Olahg, one of the clerics of Boreth, is part of a team excavating one of the sacred locations where Emperor Kahless had walked. He discovers a buried box that contains a scroll that purports to be the work of Kahless the Unforgettable, and written on the scroll are word that can only be considered blasphemy by the faithful in the Empire.

What the words on the ancient scroll do is through into doubt the ancient stories that have been passed down regarding Kahless. Of course, what this is really about is seeing the man behind the legends, and no one, not even Kahless the Unforgettable, can stand up to the mythology that has sprung up about him. For fifteen hundred years the Klingons have revered Kahless as not just their first emperor and the man who first united their people, but as the legendary warrior who taught the Klingons the meaning of honor. All Klingon children learn of how Kahless and his brother Morath fought for 12 days and nights because Morath had broken his word and killed their father, dishonoring their family. If the truth strips away the myths and fables, the Klingons might not like what is left.

With the Klingon Empire threatening to come apart at the seems, Kahless turns to the few people he can trust, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Lt. Worf of the starship "Enterprise." Friedman's book goes back and forth between the treachery, rumors, and possibility of civil war in the Modern Era with the story from the Heroic Age of the young Klingon warrior named Kahless who defied the tyrant Molor. The legend says Kahless forged the first bat'leth and founded the Empire after slaying the tyrant, a battle celebrated with the Kot-baval festival. But we learn that while Kahless was concerned with preserving his honor and the safety of his family, but once he reluctantly became the leader of the rebels, he had to make decisions on a more practical basis.

I appreciate the idea that myths and legends spring up around what we would call world historical individuals, and distort the "real" them. Abraham Lincoln was arguably the most hated man in America, in the North as well in the South, pretty much until the night he was assassinated. The problem, such as it is, would be that we only know bits and pieces of the legend and lore of Kahless from a handful of episodes, mostly from "STNG" and usually involving Worf because the big irony is that the one Klingon officer in Starfleet is probably the most ideologically pure follower of Kahless around, which is why the cloned emperor can trust him. But this gives Friedman plenty of space to flesh out the story so he gets to stack the deck the way he wants. Still, those who are particularly interested in the Klingon culture will have to at least check this one out and see what they think of what Friedman came up with. Just remember, "qaStaHvIS wa' ram loS SaD Hugh SIjlaH qetbogh Ilod" (I know others have said it here, but it is so true).

The information in this book is wonderfully helpful for planning before dining out. However, it is mostly fast-food information, rather than actual restaurants. Though the difficulty in assessing dietary exchanges in restaurant settings was explained, I hope that a future edition of this book would include more information from restaurants.

Even though fast food gets a bad rap, there are ways of eating healthier when having to eat out and this book shows you how. Sometimes foods may look better or worse than they seem because of hidden ingredients or factors you may not think of. This book helps you find the real numbers for a large variety of chain restaurants/fast food and takes the guesswork out of carb counting. I have my favorites marked with paper clips. I don't eat out without it.

I consider this book to be a completely indespensible resource for a diabetic. I've found this book to be useful in two different ways: #1 for just browsing through some of the restaurants and menu items to give you an idea about nutritional information in general. For example, you can peruse through a listing like "Starbucks" and learn how many carbs are in their various beverages, and then common things like bagels. Maybe you don't even like going to Starbucks, but such information is essential to know wherever you do go.

The second way this book is useful is to just pop in your suitcase or in your car when you travel. That way it just takes all the guesswork or awkwardness out of situations where you need to eat out, perhaps at restaurants you are not so familiar with. Just a quick glance at this book will tell you what will work for you and what won't.

the Mirror Universe Worf is a really cool thing for all fans to have in their home. It makes a great looking decoration. What I like most about it is that Worf is in a Klingon uniform. The only real problem with it is that he doesn't stand on his stand that well. He'll stand on it, but his feet hang off the edges. Overall, a really cool thing to have, but be careful because he can fall off.

I am writing this review on the "Nemesis" Worf. I recently bought it at this mall here in NJ, at this great Comic and SciFi store I always go to called Zapp Comics. This figure is literally impossible to get at regular stores (K-Mart, Walmart, Toys R Us), because New Force Collectibles only sells this and all there other Star Trek toys to certified comic book retailers and websites.

The detail in this sculpt is unbelievable, as Art Asylum has always done with there Trek items since 2002. But out of the three here this was the one that caught my attention the most because it not only had the phasers from First Contact and Nemesis but also from Insurrection (Isomagnetic Desinegrator). I highly suggest you get this set because these are going fast. These are some of the newest TNG toys in almost 4 years. Also check out the "Nemesis" Troi and Riker 2-Set coming out in a couple months.

I purchased this book as a gift to myself after reading a few chapters of my friend's book. What a wonderful book to pick up at start of a new year. It's arranged so each week for 52 weeks you have a fresh activity to inspire and guide you. Titles such as "Give your brain a vacation" or "Finding your lost self" give you an idea of the topics.
You don't have to start this in January, as the weekly format can start at any time of the year. You can even sample it randomly as the mood strikes you. I found the advice and activities so empowering, I couldn't wait for the next week to read further.
Each week you have an essay to read on that week's topic. It's accompanied by a TAKE ACTION CHALLENGE and a list of resources. The actions usually involve answering questions, making lists, or in some other way commiting your action to paper. I really liked the first one where I had to list 25 things I was most proud of accomplishing in the past twelve months. Then I had to select my five most important ones. The next part was to name three ways I've grown over the last year.
What a much better way to start a new year by focusing on the positive instead of thinking of all the things that are wrong with you and making resolutions around those.
The action items give you assignments to work on and the web pages and books listed in the resources will keep me busy all year.

I am so glad to have this book! I had been meaning to buy it for some time and I'm glad I finally did. The chapters are short, and really helpful and practical for making improvements to your life. The most refreshing concept is that of "extreme self care". What a concept! You mean I'm allowed to take wonderful care of myself without feeling guilty? This has changed my life!
Also, at the end of each chapter is a list of references and other sources covering that particular topic. This is as helpful as the book itself.
Cheryl Richardson is a very good writer. I really recommend this book.

This book is loaded with resources. Each week busts apart an aspect of life that needs rev-ving up. Cheryl Richardson doesn't just talk, she tells you how to walk the coaching with plenty of practical resources for the serious player of life. Best for those who are saying YES to a life makeover and committed to doing the work it takes to make it happen. If you're passive instead of passionate about transforming your life, Life Makeovers is your acres of diamonds. Like the folk tale, it is right under your nose and you won't see the treasure that is staring back at you.

Depending on how many self-help books you've already read, this book could be a huge disappointment, or heaven. I think it'd be great for someone just entering the world of self-help. It compiles everything I've read in other books in short, easy-to-read paragraphs with a Take Action section at the end of each week. Most self-help books could care less if you take action or not. This one at least gets you to start. However I think anyone who needs the reason why to do anything or how it would affect your life to get motivated on taking action will be disappointed, and thats why I gave the book only 3 stars, because it lacks the substance and reasoning to get moving.

I didn't expect much from this book, since it was aimed at young readers, but decided to buy it anyway since it was written by Peter David (one of my favorite authors).

Gene Roddenberry used each episode of Star Trek to tell a morality tale, and Peter David followed that same path. He did not "dumb down" the story just to please his youth market. Instead we find a story that tackles issues of race, prejudice, distrust of the enemy, and even a little sibling rivalry. This story may only be 133 pages, but it goes far deeper than its short length suggests.

If Star Trek TNG were still an active show, this story would make an excellent "flashback" episode..... and most likely become one of the fan favorites.

This is more the wrong book. Ok the story was not that bad, it moves fast and there is a lot of action, but it is a little thin. The author did not spend enough quality time working on the characters, why they did what the did etc. If you read a number of books in the genre you were guessing the end of the book about a quarter of the way in. The author really tries to get a Clancy type converging subplot structure but it seems forced, it almost aggravated me with the hard cuts from one to the next. There is not a lot of subtly in this book. It does provide a story that is at least average.
