As a big collector of pop up books, I enjoyed the detail of "Spiders" without scary hairy legs popping out. The book pulled open like an accordian and showed more of the webs and the habitat along with information on spiders to make us really appreciate and respect them. Without spiders we would be overrun with ants, flies and other bugs. I plan on buying other Art L'Hommedieu books.

I've picked up a lot of children's books about Monarch Butterflies but this is by far the best. The scientific facts are skillfully woven into the story. The words are almost poetic, and the color illustrations are lifelike and breathtaking. The children will learn what flowers Monarchs are attracted to, how they journey to Mexico, what happens when they get there, and how the circle of life continues as the Monarch's offspring makes its way back north.

There are countless books about butterflies and Monarchs get a lot of press. What sets this book apart is its unusual format -- through poems. Poems that beg to be read aloud. Poems that make you want to write your own. Poems that make you think. The drawings are beautiful.
This book has an additional bonus. An introduction that talks about the various forms of the poems, and a section at the end that gives amazing facts about Monarchs.
A Gem!

This beautifully photographed book traces a monarch butterfly's journey from North Haven, Maine to Mexico. The close-up images are astounding, and the information is first-rate. I highly recommend this book - the perfect end-of-summer gift for a 7-10 year old to accompany a monarch caterpillar in a large jar with a fresh supply of milkweed.

For kids in the 3-5 age range who are learning to read. The sentences are very, very simple and are written in speech that rhymes. ("Big ship," said Chip.) No contractions, which is great. Helps with learning sentence structure, and gives a basic story of the trip on the Mayflower. The ants are enticed to board the Mayflower when they spy yummy snacks aboard. They wind up traveling to America where they make new friends and have a feast. A nice cast of characters and a fun read. (review by a homeschooling mom)

Tennyson weaves an enchanting tale of the delicate balance of life in the rainforest. Through the senses of a blue morpho butterfly, he charms readers into discovering the layers of the rainforest, its inhabitants and their importance in the cycle of life. He presents the question of human inhabitants and their role in the cycle, and sensitively handles the issue of deforestation. The story ends on a note of hope, as Morpha learns of conservationists, who are trying to preserve the rainforest with research and sustainable farms. In addition to the lovely illustrations, a glossary of terms and teacher help page are provided to aid in integrating this story with many elementary content areas.

I bought this book for my three year old grandson upon his request. I had given him another in the series, Cicadas, and after "devouring" that one, he wanted to know more about mosquitios so I ordered it. He loved the book. The book has clear, detailed photos and informative text just right for a pre-schooler. Young children love non-fiction.

Another heartwarming Miss Spider adventure!
This series is wonderful-- fun for kids, but also enjoyed by adults (I am a huge fan). The illustration style is very interesting and unique--bright colors, endearing characters, engaging stories-- you can't go wrong.
Both the books and the neat DVDs in the "Miss Spider" series are always based around caring about others, understanding their feelings, and being considerate. The characters are not perfect-- they make mistakes, etc. But in the end they learn important lessons about love, family, friendship, and how we should treat others.
Interestingly, Miss Spider was herself an adopted "buggie" (you may enjoy the Miss Spider original book). As an adult her own family includes adopted buggies, too. Most children who live with their biological parents will not think twice about this aspect of the series, but kids who have been adopted may appreciate the subtle way in which Miss Spider stories show that adoption is a wonderful way to make or expand your family-- and that what defines a family is love.
