Get them outside!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-07
Instead of "plugged in" to computers, television, and video games all the time, children need to be outdoors exploring in natural settings. We know that children who play outdoors are happier, healthier, and smarter. It's not easy to unplug a child and reconnect to the natural world. Cindy Blobaum's book is exactly what parents need. This book teaches parents and children how to safely explore outdoors and open one's eyes to the wonders of nature. Children will be fascinated with their observations and will be thinking like a scientist. With home-made equipment and simple supplies, parents and children can find wonder and fascination in the world of insects. Teachers in formal and informal environmental or science education will also find the activities in Insectigations extremely useful.

World of Insects
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-23
This book is an excellent learning tool for all ages about insects. Within this book you learn about roughly seventeen different insects. You learn what insects are, what they eat, how they defend themselves, and other things. The part that I liked is how they try to bring to scale how big things are on insects compared to a human. For example, did you know that "if you were as strong as the world's largest beetle, you could lift up a heavy truck in your arms?"

At the end of this book, they list "fast facts" about some of the insects. Within that information they list where they live, the food they eat, worst enemies, along with other things. At the very end of the book they have a "puzzle" section, which tests what you have learned.

I bought this book for my young daughter, for when she gets older to learn from. However, I must admit I learned a few things from reading it first. I would also like to recommend the following books in the series: Dinosaurs, Sharks and Snakes.

I hope that this review was helpful to you. Again, this is a wonderful learning tool for a person of any age.

These field guides for the younger scientist are great. the pictures are so vivid and close up. The insects are larger than life and the details are clear and easy to see. The text is written in an easy to read style with words a child can easily understand. My children, ages 7, 6, and 4, and I love to sit with these and discuss the pictures and text. I would recommend these for any young adventurer.

How I liked The Magizine Insects 2

Review Date: 1999-02-22
It was a nice magazine although The first one caught my interest much more but most things are like that. I really like butterfly's and a searched the magizine for information and pictures about it and there was none to be found. the only thing I found was on the game sheet where they were comparing it to the moth. that was the only problem so besides that there were no problems at all it was a nice magizine.

I gave this book to some of my students when we finished a unit about insects and bugs. It is a great resource for children at the second grade level. The illustrations are accurate and the information is not overwhelming for children of this age group. They loved the books!

Dover never disappoints! Quality images scanned at good resolutions and the most common file types. The book includes both colour and b/w images of all kinds of insects printed on both sides of the page (so if you're looking for ready to cut decoupage materials you'll have to print out the items you want yourself.) The critters aren't indentified individually but are organized by scientific orders. Jime Harter's collections are full of marvelous images that drive one mad trying to figure out all the uses for them.

Ground beetles of Hawai'i, this thing's my bag baby.
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-10-01
This book covers most common the ground beetles of Hawai'i, in complete detail ranging from location on the islands to how to distinguish each species. Sketches of mandibles, pictures of the beetles and just about everything that you'd need to identify the bugs are included. It is an academic book and is excellent if you are trying to identify local species for conservation and census.
