21 & 22 The Cross-Time Caper continues, as the team jumps into a world where the American Revolution failed and the English Empire is still strong, as is Prussia. Cap's alternate is a Native American who is called Crusader X, and is the leader of the X-men who are officially a part of the British Intelligence agencies. They participate in stopping an attempt by the Shadow King and Iron Man to assasinate a large meeting of ambassadors. A good, tight story, with excellent artwork, even though Davis is again absent from the book. Perhaps my favorite episode of the Cross-Time Caper.

INFERNO! Issues 6 & 7 are tied into the major X-men event called Inferno. The members of the team are drawn into the event when Rachel flies to New York in response to a mental cry for help from the baby, Nathan Summers. Some are trasformed or captured by the demonic magics controling New York, while those left fight to free them and to simply stay alive. The excellent art by Davis, and the full and complete storytelling by Claremont continue. As always in Claremont's storytelling there are hints for the future. Excellent Issues.

A meaner nastier Excalibur....meet Lightning Force

While issue 8 seemed a little like filler, 9 &10 jump right back into the strong storylines, and do so with a vengance. The opening panels, revealing the presence of Nazified alternates of Excalibur, set the stage for a conflict lasting through the end of issue 11, and leading directly into the Cross-Time Caper. Widget and his dimension switching abilities is strongly featured, as is W.H.O. (Wierd Happenings Organization), and Sat-yr9 as Courtney Ross, but the alternate Excalibur team know as Lightning Force really steals the show. They are remarkable in concept and the artwork to bring that out is excellent. Issue 10 again has a guest artist, and loses a little bit, but not much, artistically.

My 4-year-old daughter really enjoyed reading this book. And I mean over-and-over again! Plus, she's now playing more with colors - food colors, painting, etc. It's a great book!

A fantastic--and somewhat frightening--book for young readers

There are 31 pages of absolutely fantastic pictures and illustrations of spiders in this book. Each page is rich in descriptions of what a spider is (don't you dare call it an "insect") and the various specific behaviors and idiosyncracies of different kinds of spiders. There are facts galore available on each page! From spiders with 3-inch bodies and 10-inch leg spans to small blind spiders, kids will be delighted in the sinister behavior of black widows and frightening looks of tarantulas to the motley camoflage of the crab spiders and the incredible agile feats of the spitting spider. In future edtions, a glossary and index in the back of the book would be helpful. This is the definitely a bad gift idea for arachnophobics (although a spider in a box would be worse), but perhaps a great gift for future arachnologists!

my children loved this book. with the pictures not being colored they were able to color them in for themselves. I bought 3 books, 1 to keep the way it is and 1 for each of my children to color. reading this book made me feel like the author really knows how to relate to children. thank you very much, it helped my children through a difficult time with moving to our new home.

One of the Best in the Patent/Jubb Series of Books!

Review Date: 2004-08-04
In a series of books that are placed in the "Children's" category, even when they are by the uniquely matched team of author Dorothy Hinshaw Patent and artist Kendahl Jan Jubb, there is usually a tendency for the initial impact to wear thin. Not so with FABULOUS FLUTTERING TROPICAL BUTTERFLIES! Patent writes with wisdom and excellent teaching skills, while Jubb is obviously in love with the subject. Jubb is a painter of nature and when required to include the human species in her works she is less successful. Oh, they LOOK like the people under scrutiny, but turn you attention to the actual butterflies and their various forms for morphing and you'll see the difference. This little book flies off the table with dazzling color: when Jubb is illustrating the owl butterflies of South America, she subtly includes paintings of owls to make her artistic point. And her phases of caterpillar to chrysalis to emerging butterfly are stunning. This little book reads well and is bound to be a favorite with children of all ages.

The book tells the story of Karen Strier's 20 year long research among the muriquis, the largest primate of the Americas, on a rain forest conservation unit in Caratinga, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Karen's findings have enabled her to write a very influential article criticizing the "myth of the typical primate". It is a solid work of primatology and yet very much readable. It contains scholarly work without pedantry. It documents an exemplary scientific carreer dedicated to research and the environment.
