LoLo and Red Legs is written by Kirk Reeves. This book takes place in Los Lomitas which is a town situated near Los Angeles, California. There are four main characters in this book. LoLo is the most important character. He is a Hispanic teenager who lives in Los Lomitas. Red Legs is the tarantula that LoLo catches from a hole near the fort that he and his friends built together over summer vacation. Frankie and Mario are LoLo's best friends who frequently get into mischief. The story is about a boy named LoLo who decides to catch a Tarantula and Keep it as a pet. When he asks his abuelo or grandfather how he can catch the tarantula, his grandfather tells him to take some meat, a jar, and a piece of string. After listening to his grandfathers instructions, they go together to catch the tarantula. When LoLo catches the tarantula he decides to name it Red Legs. Later in the story LoLo goes to a pet store called Animales Domesticales where he meets the owner named Mr. Verdugo who becomes friends with LoLo while teaching LoLo about Red Legs. Mr. Verdugo invites LoLo to show Red Legs at the county fair. A couple of weeks later LoLo realizes that he has lost Red Legs when he finds that the fort where he kept red Legs is destroyed. With Red Legs missing he begins to feel down. For a while in the story LoLo suspects a person named Joker and his brother Danny of taking his spider. But later LoLo finds out that Joker isn't the thief. He begins to wonder what really happened to Red Legs. Is he dead stolen or just missing? if you want to find out for yourself go to your nearest book seller and buy it.

The Nature Upclose Series is an informative and entertaining series consisting of 13 books for young children about various animals (and dandelions) that they're likely to come across. Pill bugs, luna moths, earthworms and slugs are just a few of the interesting creatures featured in these books by author and illustrator John Himmelman. In these books the species' life cycle and some of the roles that they play in nature are briefly looked at.

I particularly like this series because it features several species that our species is either ignorant of or despises. By educating children about the wondrous lives of species that we don't like or don't know much about, we are able to teach our children that all species are important and deserving of our respect.

Himmelman's simple text and full color illustrations will hold a child's attention. At the back of each book there is a "Words You Know" section where simple definitions are given for words found in the book. For example, in the book A House Spider's Life brief definitions are given for: egg sac, house fly, silk, spiderling and yellow jacket. This section can help an adult better explain certain terms to a child and also highlights some words that may need defining or emphasizing during the story.

What a Beautiful Book!

John Himmelman weaves his obvious love and knowledge of nature into something far more than just a beautifully illustrated, age appropriate story. His stories and paintings capture the essence of the creatures he portrays, and leaves the reader with intimate understanding and a desire to know more. This is a great book, as are all of Mr. Himmelman's works. I highly recommend this for your budding young naturalists. I commend Mr. Himmelman for setting such high standards in his craft! Keep'm coming.

I don't want to toot this horn again but man, Mark Millar just blows me away every time. I read his Wanted earlier this year and his run on the Ultimates has been amazing. But this Marvel Knights Spiderman run is just fantastic. He breathes new life and new excitement into a character with too many titles. He is an amazing character writer and Peter just leaps off the page as the tragic hero that he is. Aunt May and the villans and hottie Mary Jane just crackle and sizzle with life.

All I can say is that if you are an adult Spiderman fan, then you've got to be reading this book and the rest of the first 12 issues. This is good writing, dark characters, violent action, and nitty-gritty goodness.

'Nuff said!

Just plain amazing (no pun intended)

With Marvel pretty much letting loose on Spider-Man mania with a host of different Spidey-titles, this newly launched title, under the Marvel Knights banner, finds the web head getting the most brutal beatdown he's had in years, courtesy of Mark Millar. Next to J. Michael Straczynski's current unheralded reign on Amazing Spider-Man, Millar's Spidey title is one of Marvel's best top selling books. Beginning with Peter Parker finding the grave of his beloved Uncle Ben vandalized, and following with Aunt May getting kidnapped, it's become more than clear that somebody knows Peter's secret. Did the Green Goblin reveal to his fellow supervillains Pete's identity? What does the Owl have to gain? Why do Electro and Vulture have a rather large suitcase full of cash? And just who's side is the Black Cat really on? If there's one drawback to Down Among the Dead Men, it's that it leaves you on a heck of a cliffhanger after the wall crawler gets his keyster handed to him in a high voltage battle with Electro. Millar has taken villains like Electro and Vulture to heights the characters haven't been to in decades; we see them go to no limits to take out Spidey, even if that means taking out an innocent or two that gets in their way. The art by the same team Millar worked with on the Trouble mini-series (Terry and Rachel Dodson) is just gorgeous with Mary Jane looking like the knockout she's supposed to be. The book may be too short (this collects a four part storyarc) but it's definitely worth picking up, and by the time you get to the last page you'll be salivating for more.

I bought this book years ago because it was on clearance and I was interested in illustrating for children's books. The illustrations are just beautiful. Recently, I had my first child and we have begun reading to him on a regular basis. He is 6 months old and he is captivated by the colors and the cute bug characters. The stories are short enough to keep his attention span. We move some of the pages so it looks like the bugs are moving (flying, digging, climbing, etc.) and he laughs in utter delight. Some pages have leaves protruding out of the page and he actually tries to bite into them! This book has provided the whole family hours of entertainment. We plan on getting more of the books in this series.

My one-year-old just adores this book! It borders on obsession. He goes to it every time in his bookcase and my husband and I have to read it over and over to him. We enjoy it too, fortunately! The pop-ups are fantastic and the illustrations are intriguing. The story is told in a sweet little rhyme.

I purchased this book by Ted Fauceglia with the anticipation that his fine works were fully exemplified in this publication.
This book is an exceptional sample of Ted's work and I am immeasurably impressed by it. For the fly fisherman and fly tier this is a "must have" book, if not only to admire the beautiful insect images. The value in this book is not only the excellent images, but equqally the insect descriptions and distribution, along with the great fly patterns.
Don't hesitate to buy it, it is great value and a work of art.

Spectacular photography

This is a perfect gift for a maniacal fly fisherman, the kind of guy that checks out the spiderwebs by the side of the creek to see what bugs have been hatching. The photographs of the various mayflies in different stages of their life cycles are absolutely, jaw-dropping spectacular. The accompanying text is mercifully light on the Latin taxonomy, but contains just the right amount of natural history. As a plus, some examples of flies imitating nymphs, duns and spinners are included at the end of each chapter, along with material info. Of course, they're well photographed, too. A few tips about fishing the hatches and spinner falls are tossed in as well. OK, so if you know what I'm talking about, you want this book. One caveat - the author lives in PA, so it's mostly about Eastern mayflies.

Spider Jack, by Calvin Chimene, is a fun and unusual read like his other great book, Hot Nights in Houston. It is a collection of unique and interesting stories full of wonderful characters and unusual situations. I especially like the chapter called Strange Inventions, with poems written in the styles of the masters. My husbands favorite is the Pulviolava.

Spider Jack is an amusing and sometimes disturbed look at World War II through the eyes of Spider Jack Yates. It is almost as if one took Catch 22, Mein Kampf, and "Its a Mad Mad World" and tossed them in the Cuisinart. With great cajones, Chimene has managed to show us war in another light, and made it humorous and interesting in a way Stephen Ambrose never could.

This is an excellent book for children to learn about life cycles. The text and illustrations make the wonderful miracle of life come alive for the readers. Beginning with the egg and ending with the beautiful Monarch the author clearly explains the changes that take place. Information is also included about the migration patterns of these interesting creatures. The last pages explain how children can raise monarch butterflies so that they can observe this miracle of life first hand. I would highly recommend this book to teachers who teach life cycles as part of their curriculum
