Despite the suggestion here that this book may be available in 4-5 weeks it probably won't be. I waited nearly two months after ordering it and zlich. In addition, elsewhere on the site the hardback copy of this title is unavailable.

This is truly a book that delights all your senses - beautifully produced and illustrated it attracts attention just as an object of beauty. Written and illustrated by a talented British artist, the story is charming and quirky - all about a travelling Insect Circus with wicked wasps and pet ladybirds. We loved reading the well crafted and original storyline with our children but I have to say the book delighted all members of our family and has already become a favourite book - its on my christmas list as a perfect present to give to young and old alike. I urge you to buy it - its unique - you won't be disappointed!

Art and his family own and perform with their bug circus. The adventure begins when Art gets a spy glass from his grandfather as a birthday gift. While trying out his gift Art observes a wasp speaking with Seth Midden. Wasps are creatures that are thought to be shady by the other circus performers. Art must warn the others of the meeting and discover what those two are up to!

We got this book for my son when he was 8 months old. He didn't like it at first but now we have to read it for him every day. He will pick it out even though its under a pile of other books. He loves the short story and the colorful pages. He will touch the glitter spots as we read the story to him over and over and over again. A definite keeper!

Review Date: 2004-10-26
This is a poetic children's book that includes miraculous images of fifteen different butterfly species found throughout the world. Each page within this book contains an amazingly detailed poetic verse and displays a different beautifully illustrated butterfly. The author and illustrator were able to bring these fragile creatures to life through the brilliant use of words and realistic art. The last two pages contain a butterfly identification guide corresponding with each illustrated butterfly. Within this guide, each of the fifteen butterflies is identified by common name, scientific name, wingspan, a brief explanation of its habitat, and a description of the butterfly's history and life cycle. This book would provide a rich source of information in an elementary science class when studying different butterfly species. When the class is completing a lesson on butterflies and their life cycles, the teacher could take time to incorporate reading and science together by using this book. Also, the class could use some of the illustrations in the book to see how some butterflies use camouflage against predators. The text and art within this book will give each reader a detailed picture of the butterfly in its natural habitat.

Butterflies of Britain & Europe (Collins Field Guide)

Beautifully crafted - essential for identifying European butterflies
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-09-28
This is the best field guide to European butterflies and not just by default. Although there is currently no other decent European field guide to butterflies, this has undoubtedly set the standard for many years to come.

All 440 species of Europe and North Africa are fully described and illustrated with male and females depicted and - where there is significant variation - subspecies.

The text itself is accurate, concise and oriented at the field observer. A monochrome thumbnail map accompanies the detailed range / distribution section. Under "Description", it is heartening to see comparative comments rather than a re-hashing of what can be seen on the plates - something that used to occur often in field guides. Habitat is described in great detail. Life history includes a list of larval food plants.

The 104 plates do not accompany the text, but are found together in the centre of the book. They are, of course, superb. Extremely lifelike, wonderfully helpful for identification and pleasing to the eye, they are everything we have come to expect from Richard Lewington's brush.

This is a "must have" for anyone travelling to Europe and no British naturalist will want to be without it either. In 1970, Higgins & Riley were the pioneers. This book is the worthy successor to that groundbreaking first guide, taking the art of identification to even higher levels.

Well done book

This book has over 500 pages, about half of it is drawn pictures of butterflies (Rhopalocera). Each plate has a load full of butterflies, drawn in ground and side plan. Along with species there are possible forms or subspecies. The families are organized from Papilionidae to Hisperiidae. Quality paper, hard cover which is useful, due to common use out in the field. Along with a picture there is a portion of text for each species. The author gives information on range, distribution, variations, flight-period, habitat, life-history, conservation, behaviour, food plants... A map of Europe marked with distribution. Useful to hobbyist or a professional alike. Highly recommended.

The life of the monarch butterfly

Review Date: 2008-05-06
This is a heartwarming story about a little girl named Julianita, her family , community and the life of the monarch butterfly. I especially liked the role of the extended family in this book. This fine bilingual children's book tells the story of one girls excitement about going to school on butterfly day. Julianita tells us about the life cycle of the monarch buttefly. Her grandfather comes from a place(Michoacan) in Mexico where the butterflies invade and hang on trees every winter making a colorful spectacle. Julianita wants to see them one day with her abuelito(grandfather) in Mexico. In school she takes care of a caterpillar (Tiger), feeds it and takes it everywhere with her. One day she lets it fly away once it has come out of it's chrysalis. She is sad but happy. This is an excellent story to introduce young students to the life of a monarch butterfly and how it travels thousands of miles to Mexico. The bilingual text is excellent to help Spanish language students learn English as they can match up the words. The art work is filled with vibrant splashes of color that will captivate the young student/childs imagination. This is another beautiful book written by Monica Brown. You may enjoy for your children or students her other books like My Name is Gabriela/Me llamo Gabriela (Bilingual): The Life of Gabriela Mistral/la vida de Gabriela Mistral or her award winning book entitled My Name is Celia/Me llamo Celia (Bilingual): The Life of Celia Cruz/la vida de Celia Cruz (Americas Award for Children's and Young Adult Literature. Winner (Awards)). This book is highly recommended for community and K-6 libraries.

Butterflies on Carmen Street: Mariposas en la calle Carmen (Spanish and English)
Monica Brown has written a warm tribute to a loving family. Abuelito takes Julianita to school where she anticipates a lesson on butterflies. Her grandfather tells her tales of monarchs wintering in his village in Mexico. April Ward's illustrations are rich, vibrant, and bursting with life. I really like bilingual books and this is one of the best I have seen. Karen Woodworth-Roman, www.librarians.info
