A great Spider-Man story with a shocking twist at the end!

Review Date: 2002-08-05
Published in 1990, The Amazing Spider-Man: The Death of Jean DeWolff is a trade paperback collection that reprints Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man #'s 107-110 (October 1985-January 1986). This story was about the death of police officer Jean DeWolff, who was a recurring character in the various Spider-Man comic books at the time. Her unfortunate death was committed by the Sin-Eater, a crazed madman. Written by Peter David and illustrated by Rich Buckler, this story has a shocking twist at the end. It's also interesting as the events of this story unfold, Spider-Man himself ends up in some extreme fury and rage, which is usually not the case with everybody's favorite neighbourhood wallcrawler. One of writer Peter David's early comic book works, The Death of Jean DeWolff is a must have in anyone's library.

The Way Spider-Man should be done

This is some of the earliest comics work of Peter David, and is a great example of how Spider-Man should be written.

Jean DeWolff was a recurring police officer in the Spider-books. Her death at the hands of a serial killer named the Sin-Eater was a major crisis for Spider-Man. The webbed one is usually a fairly light-hearted guy, but this story had an edge to it that made it stand out.

If this book becomes available again, and you have any interest in the character, the author, or comics in general, pick this one up!

This book and its first volume are very useful both for amateurs interested in beetles, or for coleopterologist that seek a general handbook on beetles families.
Each chapter corresponds to a family, and have been written by specialist on that specific group.
The drawings could be better in some cases, but in general is a very helpful and user-friendly book on Coleoptera.

This bok provides an antomical key to identification of insect species. t is fun learning what is meant by the vocabulary! then research your species. For an inteelcetual but practical way to reach closer to an insect species, just beware that not all bugs are beetles.

My daughters (ages 4.5 and 2) had the extreme joy of seeing Len Cabral tell this story in person this past summer. This book is a great follow-up for us, and my oldest loves to sound out the words.

This book was such a delight to read to my first grade class. They enjoyed the humorous tale of why spiders have narrow waists. The repetitive story captured and held their attention. A must read for all first graders.

A rare find in current children's books as it teaches a practical principle for successful living. I'll get all the series for all my kids if they all are so pertinent and entertaining!

Another winner from Kingfisher Publications!I just bought this book for my 2 year old daughter and we love it! the pictures are beautiful. The text is well thought out- it is engaging and informative but still will not overwhelm a toddler. I am going to get the rest of the books in this series in hopes that they are all as good.

Food for the Imagination

Written as if the author is speaking directly to the reader, this wonderful book draws the reader into the world of the butterfly. It does a very appropriate job of explaining the life cycle of the butterfly in terms a preschooler can understand. The illustrations are also quite nice, not too detailed or flowery, not too plain. They complement the simple text very well. Especially nice are the ones near the end of the book of the little girl.

However, there are many nice books for preschoolers about butterflies. This particular book's special quality is in the way it invites the reader to imagine what it's like to be a butterfly. My preschoolers greatly enjoy "acting out" the book, starting as a caterpillar eating it's way out of an egg. The text is perfect for a simple preschooler "play". It gives them a creative way to move and physically explore what they've learned.

The ending to the book is very nice, too. Rather than just stopping once the caterpillar turns into a butterfly, or after explaining the common activities of butterflies, the book draws the reader back to reality. The reader doesn't look like a butterfly; the reader looks like, and is, a human child. The book briefly contrasts the differences between the butterfly and the human, listing good things about being a human.

The final pages list interesting facts about butterflies. Most are just a bit too complex for young preschoolers, but early grade school children should appreciate them. The admonition to not touch a butterfly's wings is well done and a nice way to end the book.

This whole series of Backyard Books are an absolute must for every early childhood classroom. The information is written in such a respectful, child-friendly form that the children ask for the books to be re.read. It is in a narrative form but filled with factual information The illustrations are exquisite! I have three of the series and my Kindergarten children are asking for the others! ! !

What a great book! My 2 year old was going through a fear of insects phase and this book helped tremendously. Not only did it educate her on the life cycle of the grasshopper, it did so without talking down to her. Now, she actually looks forward to going outside to "visit all her bugs".

Favourite 3 in 1 Book! Ratttles, chewable, clear pictures

We love this book! My 1 year old has happily played with this since she was 4 months old. It rattles, it has cloth pages and clear pictures. It's small enough to handle easily with chubby little hands. If ever there was a 3 in 1 book, this is it. It's chewable, noisy, clearly illustrated and colourful and readable. Quite frankly, this is her favourite book and comes along in the diaper bag when we travel. It is smaller than you expect from the illustrations so packs nicely!

Delightfully Appropriate!

The bright, simple, high-contrast illustrations and small, easily manipulated pages make this book perfect for the earliest learners.
The "handle" incorporates enclosed rattling beads. The large sliding beads enable counting as the book is read. The fabric is surface - washable.
This book/toy will be appreciated by the tiny ones and the adults
who love them.

What do you do on Halloween? Well if you want to know what the Doomsday family does then read Bat Bones and Spider Stew written by Michelle Poploff.

In the book there is a little boy named Henry. Henry gets hiccups whenever he is nervous. He has a new friend named Artie. Artie lives on Hollows Hill but people call it Haunted Hill. They call it Haunted Hill because they celebrate Halloween very spookily and the hill they live on looks very scary.

If you want to read this book then go to your local library. READ IT!!

Dedicated to my parents, my Aunts, my Uncles, my Grandparents, my Cousins, and my Brother.

Imaginative and entertaining . . .Loved it!

Bat Bones and Spider Stew was great reading for my 8 year old son. The book is chock full of kid friendly jokes about ghouls, ghosts, and goblins. I would recommend any kid to follow the adventures of Henry Hooper & friends as they make their way through Halloween.

Read this one to my kids and now grandchildren. A book which shows that spiders are indeed nice and useful creatures. A story told of a spider who lives in the zoo and the good done by that spider. I note that children love this book and a a matter of fact I am rather fond of it also. Highly recommend this one.

A spider's work is never finished.

Helen the spider finds herself a new home at the zoo. She finds plenty of flies to eat. It's too bad the zookeeper doesn't realize that her presence is a benefit to all the animals to the zoo. It's almost too late when the zookeeper finally acknowledges the need to take care of Helen because of her valuable work.

I remember my mother reading this Weekly Reader Children's Book Club book to me as a child. I have always remembered to "be nice to spiders." This is a fun little tale to keep kids looking for the value of small things in life.
