In Westville, South Carolina, everyone is shocked when someone stabs to death the mother of two children, nurse Frances Callahan in front of her home. Shannon McPherson's best friend Maggie Wells is watching the kids, but fears for her own life. Shannon drags her therapist boyfriend Caleb Knowles to Maggie's home to see how they can help her. His friend Detective Claudia Briscoe heads the investigation so Caleb, who has worked with law enforcement before agrees to let her know if the kids say anything useful.

The next morning Caleb's boss Dr. Matthew Ryker calls to tell him to get over to Tindall Manufacturing where they provide employee assistance counseling. Apparently, worker Murphy Lumford killed floor supervisor Buck Swygert and severely wounded machine operator Sally Weston and electrician Beard. Along with Matthew and psychiatrist Dr. Grey Lazarus, Caleb has his work cut out as the firm's workforce is stunned and badly in need of grief and fear counseling. The cops asks Caleb to interview Murphy to learn why while also providing assistance to Frances' four year old daughter Emma, who has haunted him from that first night when he saw her eyes just after her mom was murdered.

The cast makes the tale must reading for fans who want more than the murder investigation. Readers accompany Caleb as he tries to help battle fatigue syndrome victims get through the shock of murder at "safe houses" like the plant or the nurse's home. As with the delightful KEEPING SILENT, Carla Damron provides a deep thriller that concentrates on the relationships of an everyman struggling to help others cope, but wondering who will help him cope with their haunted eyes.

What an amazing tale! A murder mystery told in the unique perspective of a social worker. Carla Damron beautifully weaves characters together to create a quirky and fragile community. Caleb Knowles interestingly stumbles upon one clue after another while caring for the emotionally troubled clients he's hoping to help. Immediately I found myself drawn to and caring about all of these well visualized people.

This little gem is totally enjoyable. It's one of those fun finds that is actually as entertaining for the parents as it is for the kids. The pictures are hysterical and the story is totally comical. As a person who constantly harassed my father growing up to "come get rid of the spider for me!", it was really humorous to see that apparently I wasn't the only one afraid of creepy crawlies in the shower.

My mom picked this up for her grandson (my son) over the holidays - a totally random purchase. And it is by far one of the cutest books on his bookshelf. Love it.

I gave this book to my sister for her college graduation last year because she is so special to me, and this book puts those feelings into words. It's written about a set of twin sisters, but any sisters can appreciate it...it's about the sweetest book I've ever read! The illustrations are photographs of the clay characters and they are precious! A WONDERFUL book that is difficult to find but worth the search!

The illustrations in Spider Sisters are so wonderful and creative (clay and real objects). John Trent uses spiders to describe the wonderful love and friendship that sisters share ('fuzzy armed hug', many arms to share toys with). There's such love and care in every word; i am buying one for each of my two sisters (and one for me--since i am using a borrowed copy). Get one!

My girls love this book as much as I do. It teaches them how to love each other and be there for each other....always. My girls have memorized many of the lines and refer to themselves as Spider Sisters a lot. Sweet as pie...it brings tears to my eyes every time I read it. We give it to other little girls with sisters all the time as a gift.

This is a charming narrative told by a young spider concerning the good, the bad and the ugly of growing up with a sister. Differences between the sisters are pointed out; however, the similarities which bond are also delightfully revealed. My young daughters, ages 5 and 3, as well as myself, thoroughly enjoyed this story amidst the detailed and colorful illustrations. Even in their early development, my girls came to recognize within the story that they have differences just as the spider sisters did, but that they too "will always have each other."

This is a great book. The Green Goblin is one of the greatest villains ever created, one of my personal favorites. It's a good compilation of Spidey's encounters with the Goblin, showing some major points in Green Goblin's attacks on Spidey. It's a nice compilation book to look at and hold in your hands. I recommend it highly.

Spider-Man has fought many villians, but none so evil as Norman Osborn aka the Green Goblin. This collection contains Amazing Spider-Man #17; one of their early battles, Amazing Spider-Man #96-98; the famous drug addiction story, Amazing Spider-Man #121-122; the death of Norman and Spidey's first love, Gwen Stacey, and Spectacular Spider-Man #200; the death of Norman's son after he takes over the guise of the Green Goblin. The latter story remains one of the most powerful comics in comic history, and the book is worth buying just for that. But you also get 3 other great stories.

The comics reproduced here are Amazing Spider-man #s 17, 96-98, 121-122 and Spectacular Spider-man #200. Check out the appearance of the Human Torch in AS #17. Classic Spider-man that's not to be missed. If nothing else, it'll save you the trouble of pulling out your priceless copies of these masterpieces.

A Great Story About a Great Character
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-03
The first part of this book deals with the death of Captain Stacy, which is a lovely Doctor Octopus story which features Ock at his deadliest. Penned by Stan Lee, and drawn by legends John Romita and Gil Kane, these are the pinnacle of classic Marvel Comics.

The second part of the book deals with the death of Gwen Stacy. There's no way around it: These issues are beautiful and touching. Filled with emotion and drama, you're drawn right into the story. This is what makes Gwen one of the most important parts of the Spidey mythos. NEVER read SINS PAST. It's complete crap and destroys the image of Gwen, and further more twists this story into total dirt. If you have read it, forget the story or this volume will be ruined for you. The issues in this collection are how Spidey should be. This one's a keeper!

The end of the Silver Age
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-22
What made Spider-Man different from the very start was the adversity he faced as Spider-Man and as Peter Parker. Even in the more innocent time known as the "Silver Age" he had to learn early in his super-hero career that even with all of his amazing powers he could not stop tragedy from befalling those he loved. What started with his Uncle Ben continues here with the deaths of Captain Stacy and his daughter Gwen.

Collected in this volume are the stories that marked the end of the Silver Age and the beginning of the more grim Bronze Age. Gwen's death in paticular is one of the watershed moments in comic history. And that death is followed the very next issue by the death of Spider-man's arch enemy, the Green Goblin, another shocking death in it's time, one that has lost some of it's significance with Norman Osborn's return in the 1990's.

What's also included in this volume is insight from the man who killed Gwen Satcy, Gerry Conway. In writing about her death, he tells us Gwen died not become of some grand plan, but rather he didn't like her, and he like Mary Jane Watson better.

I't amazing that in almost 35 years since Amazing Spider-Man #121 was published Gwen Stacy has managed to stay dead all this time when just about everyone else has come back to life. Hopefully this will remain as a classic story like this should not be cheapend to make a buck as part of some compnay-wide crossover epic.

Definitely worth picking up and adding to your collection!

Great Quality...

Having just read this story makes me realize how die hard comic book fans had so many problems with Spider Man (the movie). Basically the first Spider Man movie takes this horrible trajedy of the death of Gwen Stacy and turns it on its ear by making it happen to a different girl (Mary Jane Watson), and making it a rescue instead of a trajedy. What a slap in the face to the fans who know how it really went down!

I am a new fan of Spider Man, so I am trying to catch up on my 40 plus years of being behind (and I aint even forty yet:). I feel this story is a milestone in my understanding of the character, and perhaps a milestone in my understanding of how great ideas can transform an industry.

This is my first Marvel Premiere book and it wont be my last. The quality of the pages is excellent, and it makes all the difference in my overall enjoyment of the story. The story is great, and surely pivitol in the life of Spider-Man, and perhaps the catalyst for many super hero stories who have had to deal with a dark chapter in their lives. If you don't know the story, then please get this book. You wont be disappointed.

The most pivotal Spider-Man story ever told
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2007-04-28
Just about every big name super hero in comics has at least one pivotal moment that always gets remembered by fans. For Spider-Man, what's collected here in Death of the Stacys is THE pivotal turning point for Marvel's celebrated character. The death of Gwen Stacy, Peter Parker's first true love before Mary Jane, meets her demise thanks to the Green Goblin, which leaves Spidey blaming himself for her death. This story alone makes Death of the Stacys worth picking up, and it begins with the death of Gwen's police captain father and mentor to Peter. After that, poor Gwen meets her maker, and the story concludes with the final (well, it was at the time) battle between Spider-Man and Norman "Green Goblin" Osborne. Though the dialogue may be dated, the overall story is ahead of it's time, thanks to the talent of the legendary Stan Lee, and the underrated Gerry Conway, who took over Amazing Spider-Man with big shoes to fill, and only ended up scripting the most pivotal event in Spidey's history (and would also create the Punisher to boot!). Not to mention artwork by the legendary John Romita Sr. and Gil Kane, and well, you get the idea. All in all, Death of the Stacys is the absolute pivotal event in the Spider-Man mythos, and for fans new and old, this handsomely designed hardcover is a must own. Just remember to ignore anything that was attempted to be undone with this story by J. Michael Straczynski's Sins Past storyarc in his Amazing Spider-Man run.

From www.DeCandido.Net

Spider-Man: The Gathering of the Sinister Six by Adam-Troy Castro Quite simply, the best Spider-Man novel ever written. Adam wrote "The Stalking of John Doe" in Untold Tales of Spider-Man, which is one of the ten best Spidey stories ever, and he doesn't disappoint with his first novel-length tale, which is the best use of Mysterio I've ever seen (certainly better than Kevin Smith's overrated twaddle in the Daredevil comic). Adam does right what every Spidey comic lately has done wrong. The rest of this trilogy will be published in 2001 by BP Books, and you should definitely keep an eye out for it. I can't recommend this book strongly enough.

This book is incredible! Every poem is written in a way that makes each word basically stand out in your mind! Almost every poem in this book deals with self-hate, the troubles of the world and the lack of God in it. It's sad but true. The author is about as true as it gets with the way this world and society are. Even though it's 70 different poems, it's all one trip...which makes it awesome cause everything is tied in together. This is one of the best poetry book I've read in a long time...not just for its brilliance but also for its originality. The truth hurts...and that's what you get. Give this book a chance, you will NOT be disappointed!!

Dr. Kain's science books provide marvelous supplemental activities for children to experience the excitement of science. The activities are great for kids with learning handicaps and offer them the opportunity to enjoy and learn outside of a more rigid curriculum. Children are introduced to the concept of the scientific method in a fun and hands-on fashion. Teachers are given ideas for extending the activities into other academic disciplines. And finally there is a wealth of additional resources available in the back of the teacher's manual for those who wish to expand upon the concepts introduced in the books.

I heartily endorse the use of these books by educators of children in grades K through 5.

As a second grade teacher at the closing of the school year, I found it difficult to keep my students on task and learning. However, after obtaining two Science Spiders books, I was able to provide the children meaningful and fun activties that kept them engaged and learning. The last week of school, we made salt and flour volcanoes, put in the baking soda, and added red food colored vinegar to watch them erupt (as outlined in "Surprise Explosions"). The children were delighted with their volcanoes and took them home. Then out of the "Secret Tricks" book, we tried to lift a yardstick with a newspaper covering it (broke the yardstick), and the kids just roared as kid after kid and finally me, tried to blow a piece of paper into a bottle. I now plan to purchase the rest of the series for use in September. I'll also be recommending this series to our district science committee.

Great pictures and it has a pretty good section on different tarantulas in the hobby (talks about the temprement, housing, etc,) which will help you to choose what tarantula is right for you. Whether new to having a pet tarantula, or a little further along in the hobby, this is a great book to have on hand. All the basic questions/concerns about keeping a tarantula are well-covered in this book. There are also many beautiful color photos of tarantulas that will make you want to keep expanding your collection! There is far less information on keeping other spiders and scorpions, but it is still very helpful if you are starting out.
