How J Edagar Hoover was allowed to be in charge of the FBI for as long as he did and under many presidents is astonshing. This book explores one part of the terror Hoover unleashed during his reign. The author notes,"although Bureau agents in the 1930s walked through submachine gun firestorms when going after John Dillinger, agents in the 1960s wouldn't take a baseball bat from a Klansman, even as the bat turned red with the blood of the person(black or a sympathizer)being beaten".FBI started the 60s passivly observing racist violence and ending by egging on racists.
The book documents the FBI's war on civil right well and I highly recommend.

I read a book about the Black Death over 20 years ago .I can't remember the name of the author;but I recall that it was a good sized hardcover about an inch or so thick with a fair number of illustrations. What I remember was ; I thought it was very good ,but the thing that remained with me was the effect it had on the feudal system.Until the 1350's people felt that the upper class, aristocracy, feudal lords, etc.;were special and the common people were beneath them. When the Plague devastated Europe people saw the disease took everyone regardless of station in society and they realized they did not have to be subjugated to the rulers;therefore the feudal system collasped, never to return. In other words the Black Death created the birth of the free man.
When I saw this book by Nohl,I thought it would be much the same.Actually this book shows the Black Death affected much more. It affected everything, how medical practioners were helpless, lawlessness, morality ,witchcraft, religion, family life cannabilism, persecution of others, children, music and dance;and
then after it had run it's course an explosive recovery occurred. The population increased rapidly, music and dance exploded, clothes became colorful, elaborate hair styles were everywhere and life became victorious again. This rapid recovery bore testimony to the indestructibility of the human race.Believe it or not;no matter how far humanity descends, there's always a light at the end of the tunnel.

I'm working on my MA in history and working on a project about free blacks in the Antebellum South. This is a great book I have been using for my research. This book has proved to be an invaluable source of reference throughout the project. What I like most about this book is the charts and tables that Cramer provides.

Ellen Whitney's work regarding Illinois' contributions to the conflict is "exhaustive" by definition. Typescripts of numerous orders, communications, newspaper accounts, diaries, journals, etc. from numerous leaders, communities, and common folk are provided in a readily usable format, in chronological order. Not stopping there, Ms. Whitney's extensive footnotes often add gems of information for the historian, researcher, or geneologist sometimes literally found nowhere else. Numerous maps help find obscure locations, rivers, etc.
One volume is a complete reprint of the Illinois muster-rolls for the volunteer militia, complete with index.
If you can only afford one comprehensive look at the Black Hawk war 1831-2, this is it!

I bought this book to prepare for a writing workshop that I was giving for a group of homeschooled third to fifth graders. I had seen the third grade version and was very impressed with it. It was also interesting to see that my fourth grade student who does not enjoy writing could be seen peeking at pages in the book and then actually picked it up and started to read it!
I find Write Source to be an excellent resource for teaching the fundamentals of writing. It goes through the writing process - Prewriting (Outlining), Writing, Revising, Editing (Proofreading) and Publishing and also shows the student how to properly organize their writing and how to make his/her writing interesting for the reader. It goes through the traits - ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency and conventions. The book also has rubrics to help the student (and teacher) judge the writing.
The only complaint I have has nothing to do with the book, but with Great Source, the company. They have a software program that looks like it would be great for having an independent eye to look at your student's writing; the software is not licensed for homeschoolers and the lady I spoke with seemed to have an axe to grind with the fact that I am a homeschooling mom. If I hadn't already seen the quality of the book from another homeschooling mom, I would not have bought it. I was happy I was able to buy it from Amazon and not have to have any more dealing with the company.
If you're looking for a writing resource that you and your student(s) will enjoy using, try this - I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

The Book of Mormon as a hidden text

When it was first published, critics, such as Martin Thomas Lamb, claimed it was inane for Mormons to claim than the ancients used metal plates for recording their history. Since then, however, ancient documents have been discovered written on metal plates, sometimes stored in a treasury (hebrew - genizah [see i Nephi 4]), stored in a depository in a hill (think the original Cumorah) and stored in a stone box (the drumlin in New York). The Book of Mormon has been vindicated on all counts of the coming forth and preservation of the text according to the claims of the Prophet Joseph Smith.
This book is perhaps the best book on this topic. Notwithstanding the fact that ancients writing on metal plates have been discussed by many scholars in the past, and many Mormon apologists such as Cheesman, Tvedtnes, in his typical style, is erudite and scholarly, taking each point and discussing it in great detail, always presenting strong evidence conducive to the ancient mileu of the most basic aspect of the Book of Mormon in ways that neither Joseph Smith nor anyone from the 19th century could have possibly fabricated.
As with all his texts, this book by Tvedtnes is highly recommended.
