A must read for anyone serious about their freedom. The history of copyright of the world is covered. Larry makes this accessible to anyone and puts copyright and fair use in the context of the original creation of copyrights.

A must-read for anyone interested or concerned about copyrights

This book is not only a history lesson on copyright, but it shows how big corporate enterprises obtain and used material, through the same methods they now want to deny the general public, in order to get to the powerful presence they are today.

Example: Disney using lots of old fairy-tales which were in public domain. And today they fight for everything never to go into public domain in order to keep profit to themselves, while at the same time going after creative use that would expand our culture and art.

Fascinating

This book is worth the price just to hear the constant process of American culture - be a pirate, fend off "the man" to build your industry, become "the man," then go after the pirates who are presumably cutting into your business. Money makes hypocrites of us all. Please, RIAA, don't sue me for reading this book (although I'm sure you'll find a way, if there aren't any grandmothers or poor college students you can harass).

Everyone should read this

This book is excellent. Lessig's argument is thorough and well-developed, showing why the copyright laws affect all of us, from producers of copyright material to consumers and creative innovators building off of previous work. A great, and important, read for anyone, especially those interested in learning how Big Media in bed with Congress has successfully limited the freedom of typically law-abiding citizens to empower the old corporations and enfeeble the upstarts.

Whether conservative or liberal or anything in between, the book should really "strike home" and make you understand just how important it is to have a free culture.

A must for anyone online

I heard Lawrence Lessig speak at a conference earlier in 2006 and it was one of the best presentations I'd ever heard. So it will come as no surprise that his book is written in the same to the point, easy to follow and conscise style.

It's historical research sets the foundation for a look at things to come on the Internet as new technology threatens established media, much the same way as Lessig points out it did in previous centuries. The pirates of yesteryear are the corporations of today who threaten the pirates of today. He is humble as he describes his defeat in the US Supreme Court and proactive as he puts some suggestions forward to resolve the current crisis affecting copyright on the Net.

Couldn't put it down and have already purchased Code 2 by the same author.

This is not a religious book, no hell and brimstone when you turn the pages. I was not a Christian at the time and I had just witnessed my best friends death. When I read this book but I was searching for answers.

This book saved my life at a most desparate time. David Wilkerson knows tough times and his words of encouragement had me weeping in public as I was reading it. This man has been an bright light to many troubled people. He will be greatly rewarded for his compassion and servants heart.

I bought this book over 20 years ago when I was at my lowest point in life. Nothing could bring me out of it until I read "Have You Felt Like Giving Up Lately". David Wilkerson has a powerful way of empathizing with you. No matter how terrible your problems may be, he convinces you that God understands...kind of a "been there, done that" with love. And realizing that you are not alone in your struggles is a great comfort to your hurting heart. David gently and lovingly helps you see your life through God's eyes and the end result is a long term, positive "attitude adjustment".

I realized that I pulled this book off my shelf when again at a low point in life, literally 10 and now 20 years later. With this most recent read, I didn't even get through 1/2 the book before I found myself well adjusted again (heh, heh, kind of like chiropractics). This is one book you'll want to hold on to. And it's a much healthier way to pull yourself out of depression and hopelessness then any antidepressant drug!!!

this is the best book I've ever read

America's Funniest and Most Irresponsible Film Critic Was Also Pretty Astute.

Review Date: 2007-10-12
"If You Ask Me" collects 61 of Libby Gelman-Waxner's (aka Paul Rudnick) comedic movie columns from Premiere Magazine's first 5 years, 1988 until her 5th Anniversary column in 1993. Balancing roles as Assistant buyer in Junior's Activewear, East Side yenta, and "American's most beloved and irresponsible film critic", Libby lambasts movie cliches, aging movie stars, and directors who suffer from Auteur's Syndrome. She swoons over hunky actors and fixates on actresses' coiffures. She keeps us current on the movie-going adventures of her orthodontist husband Josh, perfect daughter Jennifer, tragically single friend Stacey Schiff, and cousin Andrew. Libby is laugh-out-loud funny.

Those who followed Libby's career until the demise of Premiere Magazine in spring 2007 can see how she became the critic we know and love and revisit some long-retired features like "The Libby Awards" and "Letters to Libby". It is amazing and hilarious how seriously some readers took her. Libby's first five years were more manic and plagued with run-on sentences than her later years. This book witnesses the point at which she hit her stride as a critic, about 2 ½ years in, with an article entitled "The Entertainment Factor". Before that, Libby was scattershot and not quite a reviewer.

Of course, Libby's foremost intention was always to entertain. But in those cases when more serious reviewers all got it wrong, which occur like clockwork twice a year, Libby set us straight. Those columns are among her best, and they earned her my respect as a critic. Libby's gossipy wit was also on hand to observe the cinematic transition from the 1980s to 1990s in her column "Making Nice". Her scrutiny of '80s Greed versus "'90s New Niceness", i.e. hypocrisy, is another example of incisive commentary in a deceptively shallow package.

"If You Ask Me" is a wonderfully entertaining volume that no movie buff should be without. Libby could get away with saying what other critics couldn't, because her comments were shrouded in humor. She got even better than this, so it's unfortunate that the other 14 years of Libby are not available as a book. The Introduction refers to this as "Volume 1", so I hope that Paul Rudnick has not completely forgotten about that implication and we can expect the rest of Libby soon. Although the movies are listed under the article titles in the table of contents, an index of movies would have been helpful, as would dates on the articles.

Time for an UPDATE.

If you ask me, Libby is the best thing - and sadly often the only thing - worth reading in Premiere. This book is a collection of some of her earlier columns.

I remember picking it up in a bookstore, and reading the part about "Rain Man" and laughing so much I was helplessly bent over and terrified that I would be thrown out or carted away by men in white coats. Luckily, I wasn't.

Hollywood badly needs someone to prick its enormous bubble of egotism, and Libby is always up to the job. Many movie stars are in desperate need of a reality check, a reminder that their hangnails aren't on the same level as say, world peace.

In addition to Libby, we meet her adorable children, Mitchell-Shawn and Jennifer, her friend the terminally single Stacy Schiff, her husband Josh (like Bill Clinton he can balance a budget, then jog over to pick up a bag of donuts), her mother, and her shrink - all of whom contribute columns.

Equally funny if not funnier than Dave Barry at his best, this book is a worthy addition to anyone with a slightly warped sense of humor's shelf.

Hysterical, brilliant, and incisive

You'll come for the hysterical observations, but you'll stay for the depth of thought. In reviewing Field of Dreams, for example, in between tart and hysterical observations about Kevin Costner's ambit, we get the incredible telling and onpoint observation that James Earl Jones' character seems oblivious to the fact that baseball was segregated in 1919. Whoa, Libby, you snuck that one in on us. Libby's humor is premised in her unabashed shallowness in movie tastes--she doesn't want to see Calcutta, she wants to see a cut up Patrick Swayze (one of the studs of her era)--and in her understanding of the Hollywood culture that movies reflect. In noting that the jobs women have in movies shift from art gallery director to caterers, she observes that these are great things for Hollywood wives of movie executives to do for "fulfillment" for a month or two, but not the way that the average woman in the real world will be pulling in the bread. Well, she makes that observation in a less heavy handed and much more hilarious way. Libby, forgive me, I lack your craft.

The most important thing about this book is that it is always fun and never self-important. Paul Rudnick, the man behind Libby, had fun with it, and so will you. In Libby fashion, I should note that my adorable mother, Mary Christine Motes, recommended this book to me. Thanks, Mum.

If one is a previously biased reader, this book will doubtlessly contain some documents that are upsetting to read on grounds of including inciteful material. However, the only real criticism that I have is that the 3rd edition has several documents that are of interest to those seeking to research the early Mandatory period, such as documents by Ze'ev Jabotinsky, the Revisionist Zionist and ideological founder of the Irgun Zvai Leumi. It is understanable though, that as future editions come out the length could get phrohibitively long without pruning some data. As a basic and intermediate level documentary text it is one of the best I have come across.

Almost the Perfect Reference

I will not spend a lot of time writing about how valuable a reference this is - the other reviewers on this site have already more than done it justice. Aside from the relative lack of material on early Zionism (also pointed out by one of the other reviewers), this book has most if not all of the relevant documents. I have only one major criticism (the reason I gave the book four stars instead of 5): the almost complete lack of information about the original sources. Apart from a one-liner preceding each document, no information is given regarding 1) the citation of the original work, including page numbers, where appropriate; 2) the language in which the original work was written; 3) if the work was not written in English, credit for the translation, the date thereof, etc. While these may not be of interest to the casual reader, to anyone doing research in the field, if only for a college paper, these details are critical. Furthermore, in an area as controversial as the Arab-Israeli conflict, the ability to trace documents back to the original and verify translations is everything.

Essential reference to the whole Arab-Israeli issue.

I write in relation to the sixth revised and updated version of this work. My purchase was based upon the recommendations of others here and I was certainly not disappointed with my acquisition of this book.

It really is a priceless reference and guide to the way in which the Middle East has taken shape and how the whole Arab-Israeli issue has developed since it's inception. Indeed, references are quoted with effect from 1882 through until the present day.

We are treated to a seemingly endless accurate list of letters, speeches, reports and articles from a considerable cross section of sources, both in the international arena and in the region itself. This latest version even contains sections on the Camp David negotiations and their subsequent failure in 2000/2001.

One is able to see from the direct quotes of the parties concerned, exactly what was said, and moreover in it's true context, making this an indisputably essential asset to understanding the conflicts and `peace-making' in the region. This level of understanding is made accessible not only to the Camp David talks but also to virtually every other episode of significance relative to this ongoing issue throughout the many decades.

A highly recommended read.

An excellent source of info

The book is simply a collection of documents on the Arab-Israeli conflict, dating back to the British Mandate in Palestine. The editors included all the important papers such as the Balflour Declaration, the "White Paper," various UN declarations, and speeches made by both Arab and Israeli leaders. The latest documents it contains are those covering the Camp David meetings between President Clinton, barak, and Arafat near the end of Clinton's presidency. While it is not a history of the conflict (merely a collection of historical documents), it certainly can provide you with plenty of info on the subject.

This book has saved me hundreds of dollars, since I always cross-check claims by commercial companies that sell complementary products--and who usually provide artfully deceptive ways to make it appear as though vitamins, herbs, and other supplements are the "answer" to everything from arthritis to herpes zoster. Clearly presented with an impartial and reasoned conclusion regarding the efficacy of a vast number of natural healing consumables. It provides recommended doses when a product is given the thumbs up, and warns against common assumptions many of take for granted owing to media overexposure. When research is presented that purports to support the medicinal qualities of a product, the authors provide a careful analysis of the strength of the reserach, whether its been replicated, and whether other research has been done that has had less stellar findings. A brief history of natural products is provided whether its an herb used for thousands of years or a current fad that is prevalant in other health care systems, particularly in Europe. I do have ONE MAJOR disappointment, however. Where is the UPDATED edition? This book is now six years old; much has happened in the world of conventional and natural medicine in that time, and without such a reference guide it would require endless searching to learn of newer findings.

Truly an indispensable reference!

I feel it is very important that I have a good source of information aside from that which is available from the company for which I sell natural supplements. I'm often frustrated by the limited acceptance of herbal supplements and remedies in the U.S., especially those which are widely used in Europe, China, and other parts of the world. This book states "principal proposed treatments" (those which have been tested successfully in the U.S.) and "other proposed treatments" (those not tested in the U.S., but are often used in other countries). It gives details about recommended dosages, safety issues, medical interactions, etc. So far, it has provided me with information about almost every ingredient I've searched for, and has made me feel much more confident about recommending the products I sell! There is a section regarding health problems and the recommended products for treating them, then another section of herbal substances and their recommended uses. The information is alphabetized, with shaded tabs on the edges of the pages for quick look-ups. It is so organized and easy to use, it's not only the first book I reach for when I need information, often it is the ONLY book I need!

This book was great. Raymond is so strong, manly, mysterious and sexy and although Elizabeth seemed painfully naive and stupid at times, I realize now she was very strong...and lucky with the way things turned out for her. You really feel a sense of the Middle Ages which is why I picked this one up. All in all, I thought this book was so great I went and bought it after reading it from the library. This might not have the detailed historical details of some but nevetheless it was a really nice story. Both characters were strong in their own way without overshadowing the other. And FINALLY!- a story where the hero and heroine DON'T hate each other. That alone was a nice change. I also liked the fact that Elizabeth was strong and knew how to take care of herself without taking away from the hero. And Raymond was a caring, non ego based hero who didn't spend the WHOLE book wallowing in his initial mistrust. They worked together well to make an interesting, good story.

Another wonderful Medieval romance by Margaret Moore.

After thirteen years in a convent, where she was starved and beaten, Elizabeth Perronet will do just about anything to escape. When her cousin Genevieve breaks her betrothal to run off with another man, Elizabeth's uncle comes to the convent and offers Elizabeth an ultimatum. Elizabeth must marry the man Genevieve was promised to, or spend the rest of her life in the convent. Elizabeth quickly agrees the marriage, even though she has never met Raymond D'Estienne, Genevieve's former betrothed. Elizabeth doesn't expect to find love in marriage, but longs for children and hopes to find happiness as a mother. Raymond is not looking for love either. His first wife betrayed him, and he is only remarrying to provide an heir. I really enjoyed this love story about two people who don't expect much from marriage finding out just how wonderful love can be. Margaret Moore is becoming one of my favorite historical romance writers. I'll definitely be reading all her books.

This is the first book I've read by Margaret Moore. I'll be looking for more of her work. Her writing is refreshing in the fact that her leading couple (Raymond and Elizabeth) is so completely devoted to one another, neither of them treats the other badly because of simple suspicions. Even though they both have had very harsh pasts, and they are afraid of what the world holds, they lean on each other and show affection openly. The hero needed a bit of time to learn to trust... but once he realized what a gift his wife was to his life, he poured his heart out to her. To quote the book, "He closed his eyes and silently offered a fervent thanks to heaven for sending him Elizabeth, who could understand what he had endured..."

Raymond's first wife died several years ago. She had broken his heart and destroyed his trust in women. Attacking him in his sleep, his wife damaged his throat to a point that his voice is permanently raspy. People fear him because he rarely speaks. When he does, it is a frightening sound. With his castle falling into ill-repair, Raymond knows he must remarry himself to a woman with a good dowry.

Elizabeth has lived in a convent for over 13 years, suffering starvation and severe beatings at the hand of the Mother Superior. Her parents dead, she had lost hope of ever having a family of her own. When her uncle desires an alliance with Raymond, he gives Raymond Elizabeth's hand and dowry. Having been a homely child, and not having seen a mirror since entering the convent, Elizabeth is sure she is an ugly woman. When her husband seems cold towards her, she believes he is ashamed of her.

Raymond fights the demons of mistrust. He also is protecting his home and people from his first wife's angry brother, Montross. Elizabeth is doing her best to make her husband proud, despite her homely appearance. She is determined to prove that she can be a worthy and helpful wife. Elizabeth's unflinching devotion and support of her husband against his enemies cause the walls around Raymond's heart to crumble. Once he gives in, he brings Elizabeth a mirror to prove how beautiful she is. Together, they take on both of their nemeses. They will see the Mother Superior removed from her position, and Montross's threats put to an end. Through their work and powerful love, they will build the family that both have only dreamed of.

Her characters are so well developed it's difficult to remember they aren't real. She has a remarkable ability to create a world both vivid and believable. I found myself caring about more than just the main characters but secondary characters as well, and delighted in the interweavings of the story within A Reputable Rake and with other books she has written, namely The Mysterious Miss M and The Wagering Widow, though all the stories stand alone. I now own all five of her books and have bookmarked her eHarlequin The Diamond, for rereading whenever I'm in the mood for intelligent heroes and heroines with heart, and stories that are intriguing with exciting twists and turns, not to mention the well placed clever humor. Brava! Encore!

In his earlier days, Cyprian Sloane was a less than reputable gentleman. He embraced the life of a rake, gambler, smuggler, even though some of those deeds were committed as a cover-up while spying for the crown during the war. Now, he wants respectability, not so much for himself, but to rub it in the face of a father who has always despised him. As he took steps to gain his rightful place in ton society he crossed paths with the caring, determined, and outspoken Miss Morgana Hart. Without choosing to, he became embroiled in Morgana's latest madcap scheme of turning four destitute young woman into `courtesans'. If discovered, any inroads he'd made for a successful entrýe into ton society and a suitable betrothal to a respectable but boring young woman would all be for naught. Sloane would have to make a decision as to whether retribution for the cruelty of his childhood was worth losing the remarkable woman he'd come to love.

Ms. Gaston is a remarkably gifted author of extremely well written regency tales which encompass an amazing zest for creativity. I find her stories original, bringing to life well-developed characters that will remain in your thoughts long after the last page has turned. This latest, after such stellar releases as THE MYSTERIOUS MISS M, and THE WAGERING WIDOW clearly show this author has what it takes is one to watch, enjoy, and savor as well as put on `auto-buy' status!

I enjoy giving deserving books 5 starts, because then I feel like I've added a valuable collection to my library thereby getting my money's worth.

Everything I needed to pacify my reading appetite (I can never satisfy my appetite for reading) was placed so eloquently before me with this book.
Ms Gaston/Perkins took her time to develop the characters for us, giving us glimpse and hints of the novel's unfolding plots and twists.
The synopsis has been described in detail by other reviewers and I am glad to stand up with the majority here, to say that this is a very well written Regency Romance novel.
From Dialogue to humor to accuracy to passion and even drama, page after page made the book a page turner.
Two thumbs way up.

Diane Gaston has won me as a fan!

Cyprian Sloane has a wretched reputation. A known rake, gambler and smuggler, he also worked as a spy. But those days are over. Sloane is determined to be accepted by society and gain respectability. Unfortunately, he meets Morgana Hart, whose altruistic nature is bound to ruin her reputation and his respectability.

All Morgana wants to do is save her maid from prostitution. Unfortunately, in doing so, she has acquired a house full of ladies of the evening. Morgana's plan has gone slightly awry. Now, she has placed her reputation in jeopardy. And Sloane's as well.

Sloane is faced with a decision. His goal of respectability or Morgana. Unless he can find a way to have both, he must chose one over the other.

My favorite part of reading A Reputable Rake was the way in which Ms. Gaston drew me into the story. I was unable to see a tidy resolution to Sloane's dilemma and that's what makes this such a great story. You are turning every page with anticipation to see HOW these two will find their happily ever after. Because, after getting to know Morgana and Sloane, I was desperate for them to find happiness together. Ms. Gaston did not disappoint.

I'm a big fan of historical romance. And, I have been missing out on a really great author. If A Reputable Rake is typical of Ms. Gaston's writing, Diane Gaston writes really good historical romances. Now that I've met the characters in A Reputable Rake, I want to go back and read The Mysterious Miss M and The Wagering Widow. Diane Gaston has won another fan!

Once you meet this Reputable Rake, you're going to want one of your own! Sloane and Morgana are fun, sympathic characters who run into trouble trying to do the right thing. A can't-put-it-down page-turner just perfect for summer reading.

The Success of Open Source in a not a just wistful paean to Linux as the title would suggest. Rather, it is two books in one.

The first book is one of the very best recapitulations of the open source movement and all of its predecessors. The second book is about how something that just seemingly shouldn't work, works so well, and how those principles behind its working extend to more than just the open source movement.

The author, a university professor, draws liberally from the traditions of historians, economists, sociologists, and psychologists to paint a compelling picture of why the forces behind open source are not going to go away any time soon. Read in best companion with The Cathedral and the Bazaar, which IS a bit of a wistful paean to Linux, it illuminates its subject wonderfully.

Steven's book brings a rich articulation of the social practices innovations unleashed by the Open Source collective: a new understanding of private property that better fit the tech forces and the challenges of the present. His book it is not a model; it is not the list of the 10 reasons why...; it is not the defense of an emerging theory; but an historical account in which anecdotes, facts, historical moment, tentative hypothesis, set the background to allows the reader to reshape her/his own questions. The book gave me a perspective I have been testing with IT architects, programmers, software designers...I feel myself much more prepare to engage in conversations about the future in a meaningful and effective way. Thanks to the author!

For the serious reader (and who indeed thinks open source is hilarious?), Weber provides a detailed history of how this idea developed. He traces it from the advent of unix in the 1970s, and the generous (ie. low fees) licensing terms by ATT. Which led to the BSD Unix that flourished in the 80s. Also during this time, GNU took off.

But the bulk of the book deals with the 90s onwards. Especially as linux grew from Torvalds' seminal contribution. Its intellectual roots in unix and GNU are studied. We also see the rise of the Free Software Foundation and Apache, as articulate enablers and promoters of open source. All of which was aided by the invention and meteoric growth of the Web. This played a vital role in enabling a global audience of programmers to hear of and contribute their efforts.

I'm a commercial software developer, and found the author's history of the UNIX culture and the story of its evolution into what we now call Open Source to be fascinating. That alone made it a good read for me. Add in the thought provoking analysis of the "whys" (the real point of this book), and it's a killer combo.

Warning: the book is *full* of sentences like "Pluralism at many different levels is being enabled by communications technologies and by experimentation with property; together, these are reducing the marginal cost of adding voices toward an asymptote of zero." Despite that, I've been able to read it at the pace of a thriller, not a textbook.

I am buried up to my nose in work but I had to come in and give my review on this one. These are great great stories, written by a man who believed in things he told you about and knows how to tell them good. I have not even completed the book, but oh man, it is so good... "By the waters of San Tadeo", "Beyond the great snow mountains", "Meeting at Fallmouth", "The money punch" and "The gravel Pit"...they will leave you to wonder at the versatile man who wrote them and the fact that he is known as a "great western writer" ? Western, my foot! He is a GREAT WRITER - Period ! And oh, for the fans of Jeffery Archer (I am one too) The Gravel Pit,The Money Punch and Meeting at Fallmouth will delight you for sure, although Louis always has his flavour in what ever he writes ( and I am glad of that) And for hard core louis fans - it has a Ward McQueen story too.

Vintage L'Amour that keeps on pleasing, great read!

I started with Louis L'Amour when I was 13. I'm 50 now and he still gives me immense satisfaction. His books, all of them, grace my small home library and they are somewhat dog-eared from the many times I've re-read them. "Beyond" is a small compilation of short stories that are pure enterntainment and L'Amour at his best. He takes you to places you will probably never visit, introduces you to people and circumstances of intensity and all in the comfort of your favorite reading chair. I look forward to the promised release of several new works.

I Love L'Amour!

This review refers to "Beyond The Great Snow Mountains"(Short Story Collection) by Louis L'Amour.

L'Amour fans, this short story collection is fabulous. Ten captivating classic stories that will have you turning the pages, as fast as you can. Each story is a fresh new experience. Adventure, Mystery, Intrigue, Suspense, Action and even a little romance. The action takes place on land, in the air, and on the water. And yes, some Western adventure as well. The main characters and heroes are always charismatic. Some are even based on real life adventurers he knew.

L'Amour's own turn at being a miner and a boxer(as told in the Afterword by Beau L'Amour), is put to good use in some stories revolving around those subjects. The mining story "Under The Hanging Wall", is a suspense packed murder mystery, with all the usual suspects, and the action taking place in an abandoned and dangerous part of a mine. "The Money Punch" is the story of a young fighter with lessons to learn.

In "By the Waters of San Tadeo" and "Beyond the Great Snow Mountains", women are the main character and heroines of the stories. One has a woman trying to escape danger and the other a woman torn between the Tribe she has become a part of and a chance to go back to her home.

The stories range from 10 pages to 40 pages. And in that short time, L'Amour manages to tell great tales. Other works included are "Meeting at Falmouth", :Roundup In Texas", "Sideshow Champion", "Crash Landing", "Coast Patrol", and "The Gravel Pit". A Dedication, and Afterward by Beau L'Amour and a short informative, "About Louis L'Amour" is also included in the book.

I was delighted with every story in this collection. Louis L'Amour fans will love this one.

Enjoy....Laurie

It has been some time since I read BEYOUND THE GREAT SNOW MOUNTAINS, but I checked to see what I wrote on the first page of the book, something I always do when I finish one. This is what I found " some excellant stories" to be excellant in my opinion a story (or book) must have a good plot, good characters and get to the end without losing the reader. These stories I will read again and again.
