Excellent basic resource

Notice that I said "basic resource". This pamphlet won't replace a good course or book on Photoshop, BUT it has lots of plusses --

+Comprehensive. All of the menu items are listed and basic information about how to use them are included. For example, what a workspace is, how to set one up, save it, select it, or delete it.

+Each tool (including the hidden ones) in the toolbox is explained.

+The toolbox shortcuts (using control or command + another key) are summarized in one panel on the last page of the pamphlet. How convenient is that??

+Examples of some of the items (like swatches palette) are included.

There is one downside - not all of the filters are explained or described. However, given the huge range of filters available it's not surprising. I think the filters are something you just have to 'play' with and see what you like.

In sum, this is a great resource to keep by your desk while you're working with Photoshop.

Advanced DOS: The Microsoft guide for Assembly and C prog
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-01
Correct me if this is not the book I mentioned. I am talking about the book "Advanced DOS: The Microsoft guide for Assembly Language and C programmers", written by Ray Duncan, from Microsoft Press. This book shall be out-of-print, as it was published on 1986.

If you are studying Operating Systems, and you are required to write a very primitive systems, I think you can get quite a lot of ideas from this book, as it is talking about the operating systems of 15 years ago. That shall fits your assignment very well. You learnt about its organizations, and the data structure required, so I suggest that you shall try to get one either from library or from the old book shops.

This book is a fantastic source for scholars especially those with deficient or non-existent Latin skills. It contains four of Aelred's most important works, Lament for David King of Scots, The Genealogy of the Kings of the English, the Life of St Edward the Confessor and the Battle of the Standard. In some cases it is the first time that an English translation of the work is available. The translations themselves are excellent, being the work of the well respected scholar/translator Jane Patricia Freeland. Marsha Dutton, herself an expert on Aelred, provides an excellent introduction to the works covering topics such as Aelred's biography, a comentary on each of the works, the historical context and the extant manuscripts. It is a great book that makes the major works of Aelred of Rievaulx far more readily available.

Great method of seeing both sides

I'm using this excellent book to teach my Black studies class right now. Primarily, it provides each side of debates of famous issues in Black history. For example, Thomas Jefferson's theories of Black inferiority are compared with Benjamin Banneker's beleifs in the equality of all, Booker T. Washington's "bootstrap theory" is compared with WEB DuBois's belief in social protest, MLK's veiws on the inclusion of Blacks in American society is compared with Malcolm X's views on Black Nationalism, etc. Complete lectures, speeches, and wirings in the own words of the people who are discussed, are given so that the reader/students may make up their own minds. Teachers, take note of this and consider it for your classes.

"Nothing should diminish the fundamental value of this resource book for hard-pressed teachers, penniless students and underfunded libraries involved in the study of African history. Here is a ready-made text of readings to splendidly set a teacher on his or her way, and thank the initiative of Robert Collins therefor."

A new edition

Review Date: 1999-12-03
I am the author of this guide. After many inquiries, it has been decided to update this work with a new title, not yet chosen (I am no longer affiliated with Salem College, which became Salem-Teikyo University a decade ago). The new book will be published by Scarecrow Press in early 2001. The compilation is being built to emphasize materials published since 1985, but it will also include references to items missed in the earlier outing and perhaps (it hasn't yet been decided) will include up to 10 of the most important titles from each of the many sections of the earlier edition. It pleases me that copies of the earlier work were purchased throughout the airline industry, by enthusiasts, and are found in most major university, government, and large public libraries. I am working diligently away to make certain that the next installment is as well received. If you want to offer suggestions for material inclusion or other comments, please direct them to me in care of Scarecrow Press.

The Alabama Confederate reader

Excellent, As One Would Expect Of McMillan
Helpful Votes: 18 out of 18 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-13
The late Dr. Malcolm McMillan, Head of the History Department of Auburn University, offers the only thoroughly-researched documentary of Alabama's role in the Confederacy. Utilizing the painstaking research for which he was well-known, Dr. McMillan manages to assemble a multitude of primary documents in a highly readable and valuable history. Providing his own short narratives as a segue, he produced the most comprehensive work on Alabama as a Confederate State. Just as his "Constitutional Development In Alabama" remains the most authoritative work on Alabama's six constititutions, his "Confederate Reader" is of such value that its mere existence has warded off foolhardy attempts by modern historians to duplicate or enhance it. This reviewer would also recommend Dr. McMillan's last work, concerning Alabama's three Civil War governors. Together with the "Confederate Reader", Dr. McMillan managed in his lifetime to achieve that level of pre-eminence occupied by Thomas Owen and A.B. Moore. Today's historians would do well to emulate the devotion of Dr. McMillan to research, the fundamental element of quality in historical writing.

A thorough account of the events surrounding Saramaka life

"Alabi's World" is thorough (some note about that, later), captivating, and educational. To go to the cliche': "I have not been able to put the book down." I must qualify this by saying that my roots are from Suriname and therefore I have much interest in the material because of my familiarity with the settings. However, anyone interested in colonial history, African history as it pertains to the Western Hemisphere (slavery, slave rebellion, African customs of Maroons), will be thoroughly enlightened by the accounts charted in this book from the 4 perspectives listed above.

Richard Price has painstakingly arranged his research in such a matter that you get 4 different perspectives of life in Saramaka (Maroon colony located in the interior of Suriname): German Moravian (religious sect), Dutch Colonist, Saramaka, and his own. It is neatly arranged so that the information flows like a captivating story in which you follow these historical characters and get caught up in their lives, motivations, changes...

Because he has made one character the focal point, you get a more centralized view of what it was like in 18th century colonial Suriname and you can take away more detail from these individualized accounts.

I have discovered a great source for Maroon history in Suriname and will be seeking out all of Richard Price's titles to get the complete story about the Maroons.
