Excellent Roadmap for IT Linux adoption

If you're considering expanding the use of Linux in your organization, this is a must read. Mr. Teter succinctly and accurately notes the pro's and con's of moving into an open-source Linux environment. Using his book as a roadmap saved our company time, pain, and money.

Great Book for Exec's

Review Date: 2006-06-01
In his book Paradigm Shift, Mark Teter shows corporate executives and IT Directors how to assess their companies and judge whether or not Linux is right for them. He starts the book off with a general road map of Linux, where it has been and where it is heading. Mark believes that most, if not all companies can take advantage of Linux and the Open Source community to gain a competitive advantage over their competitors.

It is clear that Linux has matured and come a long way since its inception. Under the right circumstances, I would have to agree with Mark that a company could simplify their environment and reduce their TCO by switching to Linux. Granted, this switch is not for the faint of heart. If you are coming from a UNIX environment, the switch should be fairly easy. However, if you are attempting to migrate from a Windows environment, it may be a longer road to a full switch. This is where Mark's Seven Keys take hold.

The Seven Keys give you a standard process that will help guide you to a successful migration. These Keys are critical to any IT project but they are especially prudent when making a switch in operating systems. Following these keys from Identifying Business Objectives all the way through to Practicing Process Improvement will ease the transition, but Mark is very honest and speaks truth to potential failures.

this is the most wonderful story of the Persian painting, including references, both pictorial and textual, to pre-Islamic greater Persia.
The images are of great quality, listed in contextual order, from everyday life to mythology and literature.
Printing quality is great and colors are nicely reproduced.
In sum a must for anyone seeking a concise yet scholarly account of the history of Persian miniature. Chapeau bas to Mr Marshak, the author, and company.

Photographic Cases: A Must-Have for Collectors & Dealers
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2001-11-03
This book is a visual delight packed with absorbing, well-written text, a generous sampling of over 460 illustrations, descriptive captions, and values. Adele Kenny infuses her subject with lively and energetic writing and approaches case art from both historical and design perspectives. Thus, the book is a valuable and important resource for photographica enthusiasts, Victoriana and Americana collectors, dealers, artists, and interior designers. This book is impressive for its readability, its content, and the quality of its illustrations.

A MUST-HAVE BOOK, ONE OF KENNY'S BEST

Review Date: 2001-11-03
The outstanding production on this book and several hundred gorgeous

illustrations are matched by interesting, informative, and highly readable

text. The author's focus on mid-nineteenth century design styles includes

not only a wide range of daguerreotype cases, but their component parts as

well (pads, mats, and preservers). The book is about case art, but it also

includes the case makers and photographers, the design styles of the time,

and a historical perspective on life in America from 1840-1870. This unique

approach to case art is a departure from the norm and makes Kenny's book an

important reference text for photographica, Americana, and Victoriana

collectors along with artists, historians, and designers.

I picked up Karmel's book yesterday and found that I could not put it down. I am neither an artist, nor an art historian, but I found Karmel's explanation and analysis of Picasso's cubism both accessible and fascinating. I would highly recommend it not just for art buffs, but for anyone who is at all interested in Picasso's work. Setting aside the craft of Karmel's words, the book itself happens to be a work of art in its own right. It is beautifully bound with fantastic images.... This is the first book that I have felt the need to write a review of on amazon. Let me assure you that there is a reason...

An efficient volume for novice and expert

Review Date: 2008-06-27
Highly recommended! This volume has much for the novice, and many useful tidbits for the expert. Do not read this expecting great depth on all the technologies or all the energy policies affecting our country. It is a short book that provides an excellent overview from a balanced and experienced perspective.

Although the book does not give great weight to the role of competitive markets, it highlights regulatory and policy barriers that led to our current situation. We can turn out attention to changing those policies. Ms. Tombari provides insight into the direction the country is likely to take if we establish a balanced and comprehensive energy policy in 2009 and beyond.

Huge Info in a Quick Read, and Scary Implications!

Power of the People: America's New Electricity Choices (Speaker's Corner)

An easily understandable overview of our electric generation situation, and sad commentary on the U.S. electricity future which few people or government agencies are dealing with. The author is clearly an expert, and rarely does one find so much information in one place. I wish our Congress and EPA would read it.

This is a wonderful way to study Benedict's Rule and learn to apply it to today's modern and complex lifestyle. Ms. Vest is able to look beyond the ancient text and pull forth the wisdom of Benedict, making it alive and vital for today's Christian. A definite read for the person interested in achieving a balanced and Christian life.

Though targeted for an audience of Benedictine oblates, or lay associates of Benedictine monasteries, _Preferring Christ_ will find a welcome among any serious seeker on the spiritual journey.

Written 1500+ years ago, Benedict's Rule is still a fresh commentary on the applied Gospel and Christian living. Because of its monastic context, the Rule is often bypased by all but the most intense disciples. Vest has written a beautiful, practical commentary on the Rule that can be applied by anyone looking to live the Good News. Herself an oblate, Vest comments not out of theorhetical platitude, but out of lived experience.

The book is laid out with the text of the rule, commentary, and space for the individual to write their own reflections. (The text of the Rule is a relatively new translation by Dom Luke Dysinger, O.S.B)

A General's Plan for Peace-Everyone Should Read this Book
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-11
General Jack Kidd has written a very important book, one that should be read by every thinking American. One thing that distinguished General Kidd throughout his long military career was his ability to 'think outside the box', and come up with original, practical and fiscally sound solutions to problems. He originally showed his skills as a young B-17 pilot who rapidly rose through the ranks of his bomb group. After the war, he continued to rise through the ranks due to his practical problem-solving and leadership skills. When Gen. Kidd retired, he did so as a Brigadier General. In this book, Jack Kidd makes a strong case for the peaceful solution of world problems instead of war. He spells out in detail just how this could work, culminating in what he calls his Starlight Intitiative, and I would not do it justice to try to outline it in a brief review. The final chapter of the book is by far the strongest, and would stand alone in its eloquence and persuasiveness. Now past his eightieth year, this great American has left his nation one final legacy, and it could quite possibly be his most important. He wants to see war as he knew it and fought it rendered obsolete. Don't think it's possible? Read the book first, digest its arguments, and then decide. As a high school teacher and historian myself, I have learned much from the book and have used Gen. Kidd's arguments to stimulate my students--the next generation of Americans--to think about a world where peaceful solutions can replace the horrors of war--horrors which General Kidd speaks first-hand and which he has dedicated his life try to end forever. I recommend this book highly.

Great Tool for the Classroom

World War II is an important time period in history but a diffcult one to teach middle school students about. There is so much to cover and much of the material is to difficult for middle school students to understand. This book solved those problems by giving Social Studies teachers a variety of wonderful primary sources to use. Each source covers one aspect of the the war. Including the war effort at home, songs from the 1930's and Hitler Youth. Great book. Great help in the classroom. The book keeps the history simple without dumbing it down or making the time seem to cheery or to depressing.

All books in this series are wonderful!

I ran across this book in a political science course that I took this year and I have to say that it was a revelation. I had no idea of just how complex a phenomenon was fascism, not to mention of its cultural dimensions. This anthology gives you the full information set and is very elegantly translated, despite the sometimes windy prose of the materials included. I'd recommend it to anyone who really wants to understand the radical right in depth.

A big step forward

Most anthologies on this subject have been made up of a superficial smattering of articles. Here one gets the real thing: a full-scale corpus of writings from fascism's beginnings to its catastrophic end. The translations are excellent, the selection of texts diversified but coherent.

I like Griffin's anthology as well, but this one gives you far greater depth. I doubt anything will ever take its place, at least in English.
