There are no real faults with this book. The Introduction is interesting. An essential book for those seriously interested in the Daoist Perspective.

An excellent translation of a very important document

In my opinion, this document is of equal standing with the Chuang-Tzu and the Lieh-Tzu in importance, and as a compilation of thought, in a way more important as these documents as an overview of Taoist thought.

Having read a more obscure translation earler, I found this translation to be delightfully accessible and clear. There are excellent notes, summaries, explanations, and histories to compliment the document. I wish they had been present in the earlier translation I had dug up.

After reading the Tao Te Ching, read this before moving on to the Chuang-Tzu, Lieh-Tzu, or any other Taoist document. It's worth it - and in the spirit of Lao-Tzu, not too long or wordy.

Historically important and impeccably translated

Besides the Yuan Dao's enormous historical and philosophical value, the introduction to the Yuan Dao is the most important introduction to taoist thought that has been written in many years. It clearly defines the essential differences between the way Taoist and Western philosophies think.

First of A Three Volume Epic: Getting There
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1999-09-21
This is the first of three volumes in which a huge number of personal recollections have been carefully sifted and appropriate extracts selected, and then merged into a continuous narrative. The result is a masterpiece. "The March", the opening volume, describes a military machine and supporting administration unprecedented in human history, but just past the peak of its power, embarking on a vast undertaking that has been wholly underestimated in logistics, strategic and political terms. The most surprising revelation, for this reader at least, was the extent to which the disaster commenced almost from the moment that Napoleon's vast multi-national force crossed the Niemen into Russian Territory. Supply breakdowns and outright hunger were significant factors from the outset and the Grand Armee's route eastwards in summer heat was littered with the pathetic corpses of troops from a dozen countries who found suicide preferable to the continued misery of the march. The capture of Smolenko caused heavy losses, but these were minor compared with the hecatomb of Borodino, a horrific slugging match at which Napoleonic tactical genius was most notable by its absence. The first volume ends with the French entry into an eerily deserted Moscow. Readers who enjoy this volume - a feast for all Napoleonic and "War and Peace" enthusiasts - will want to go on immediately to the two subsequent volumes dealing with the occupation of Moscow and with the Retreat itself.

This is the first of three volumes, in which Mr. Britten-Austin paints a riveting picture of Napoleon's Russian Campaign in 1812. The concentration is on that part of the campaign aimed at Moscow, and the activities of other forces, detached to address different targets, are only covered in so far as they impact on the march on, stay-in and retreat from Moscow. A huge number of personal recollections have been carefully sifted and appropriate extracts selected, and then merged into a continuous narrative, linked almost seamlessly together by Mr.Britten-Austin himself. The result is a masterpiece. The feeling of immediacy is very pronounced and indeed at times the events, harrowing in themselves, are so graphically described by the participants that the reader has to pause, all but overcome by the horror and pathos of the narrative. Classic Year, Classy Magazine
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-02-03
Sport Magazine set the bar for all others. This collection of reprints celebrates the year of 1955, a year of anti-dynasty where championships were celebrated in Brooklyn, Syracuse, Cleveland and Detroit. Most of the articles are from 1955 or 1956. The one on Arnold Palmer is from 1958 and two articles are from the sixties. This gives the collection a touch of historical perspective in keeping with the spirit of Sport Magazine which usually had one article per issue looking at the past. There is a nice color portrait preceding each article and all are reprinted word for word.

Each entry is worth reading. My favorites were Frank Graham Sr. on the Brooklyn Dodgers, the great Arnold Hano on Doak Walker and John M. Ross on Sugar Ray Robinson. The memories of going to the candy store with my allowance in hand to buy Sport Magazine on the date each new issue came out returned to me as I read this book. I was just as excited to see the names of the writers as the athletes they were writing about. A most rewarding experience.

Sport magazine got it right; I could read it as a kid and yet never felt talked I was being talked down to. This anthology captures the spirit before "Moneyball." The Doak Walker chapter practically carried the book to the cashier for me; I'd been interested in the Texas legend since Dan Jenkins' "I'll Tell You One Thing," and it's very instructive for like me who had assumed the NFL began with Johnny Unitas. The Mickey Mantle piece is very interesting, and I recommend it particularly to Jason Giambi for this challenging coming season. The tinted photographs make the book worth coming back to, and it fits in your pocket for road trips (unlike Underworld).

Review Date: 2001-03-21
The Graphics Draw program provides the source code and documentation for a fully functional and tested graphics application. A broad range of graphics procedures are included that are available for study and reuse. Procedures include various 2D algorithms such as 2D line clipping using the Sutherland-Cohen algorithm, 2D circles using the Bresenham algorithm, 2D plot rotation, 2D polygon fill using the Seed Fill algorithm, and 2D line clipping using an arbitrary polygon window using the Cyrus-Beck algorithm, among others. Moreover, several 3D algorithms are integrated including 3D parametric lines, various 3D transformations including world to center-of-projection and canonical-to-perspective transformations, along with other useful options. In addition, seven types of splines are included, namely, Hermite, Bezier, Basis Spline, Tension Spline, Tension Bias Spline, Catmull-ROM Interpolating Spline, and the Cardinal Tension Interpolating Spline.

Greater Respect for American Pioneers
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-30
After reading "900 Miles from Nowhere" I am amazed at the pioneer spirit, and their toughness and tenacity. Settlers of the Great Plains suffered hardship upon misfortune living in crude huts and sod houses and breaking ground in an often inhospitable land. Their prize was 160 acres of free or inexpensive land given by the United States government to help populate the drier lands of the middle west. "All" they had to do was improve their land for several years, during which time they experienced some or a combination of the following natural disasters: drought, tornadoes and high winds, extreme heat, plagues of locusts, and blizzards, as well as personal torments in the form of isolation, scarcity of food and funds, unsanitary and uncomfortable living conditions, disease, and death. That anyone managed to hang on, let alone prosper, in these conditions boggles my "modern day" mindset.

The letters and diary entries in this book showcase the actual thoughts, experiences and emotions of many pioneers between 1860 and 1910. Their stoicism is inspiring and their work ethic is astounding. The optimism and sometimes the bleakness of some excerpts really tugs at your heart. The photographs are amazing, collected from many historical museums in the midwest. You see formally dressed families proudly posing in front of their sod huts, and in the background the flat prairie seems to stretch to infinity, looking more like Mars than somewhere on Earth. It's fascinating to study the faces of these people, and know that you are looking at some of the builders of America who gave it their all.

Several of my ancestors lived on claims in Montana during that same period. Now I know what they must have experienced in trying to get their share of the American dream.

Great history lesson

If you're one of those people who think hardships mean your computer is down or you've lost a cell phone call or maybe your morning coffee isn't just the blend you prefer, this book should be a wake up call. Steven R. Kinsella 's "900 Miles From Nowhere," is a compilation of letters, journal entries and other documents in which the settlers of the Great Plains describe in their own words the immense hardships they faced as they established homes, farms and towns on the vast American prairie.
Kinsella, a former press secretary to U.S. Sen. Tom Daschle, now lives in St. Paul, Minn. He is a great-grandson of Great Plains homesteaders. Kinsella did hours of research for this fascinating book which offers insight into the courage and determination our ancestors faced as they struggled to make new lives for themselves in the frontier.
The book's title comes from a letter written by a new bride whose husband had taken her to a sod house in western South Dakota. Still, the 23-year-old woman was cheerily optimistic as she wrote about the construction of her "other house," a two-story frame structure that she was more than anxious to occupy. Her determination to succeed despite being "900 miles from nowhere" is a common theme among the writings, and is a pretty good indication of just how this a large part of this country was settled - by people who refused to be defeated.
History buff or not, most readers will find this a very good read. I received it as a gift and ordered a copy to give as a gift.

An excellent job of narrating the recovery of lost material from existing documentation. The footnotes are well researched. The topic is fascinating, and the insights of the editors very useful. However, I would have liked to see an additional index with entry using English terms as well as the existing index of Taino words.

In addition, in analysis of a culture so intimately linked and so knowledgeable of nature as the Tainos, one should also take into account biological reality. For instance, it seems clear to a biologist that Mácocael, "he of the lidless eyes:' page 6 of the text may well be the great rainbow boa, Epicrates spp., Ma-ja, the great snake, since this serpent, like most boas, has lidless eyes.

Required Reading for Bush Apologists

You won't find many of the usual right wing nut jobs reviewing this book, because it is very hard to libel documentary evidence. In law, we say "res ipsa loquitor," or "the thing speaks for itself." And this book has delivered the goods: documentary evidence in spades. If you don't come away from this book convinced that at the very least there is a prima facie case for indicting the US military high command, up to and including the shrub and Darth Cheney, on charges of aggravated war crimes and crimes against humanity, then you just haven't paid attention, or, worse, you are part of that portion of humanity--Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Pinochet, Pol Pot, etc.--that thinks there is nothing wrong with torture and that, in fact, we should use it more. If that is the case, you will find plenty to warm your heart here.

Very Informative

This book is a great collection of the records of the Bush administration's torture policy. Seeing as it is a collection of documents obtained through FOIA some of it is redacted. This redaction lends the book that air of "what are they trying to cover up." This book would be great for research.

The introduction sets it all out in a nice brief synopsis. Thus, this book has little author influence as to opinion. It allows you to see for yourself.

To be privy to a set of diaries such as these is indeed a rare opportunity. I was loathe to read the last chapters, because I felt as if I was bidding farewell to a man, not only of great courage and determination, but a loyal and devoted friend as well. His travels and experiences are there, open to all who care to share thoughts and frustrations with a man bent on saving human beings, no matter what the cost.
The world would be a different place if his words had been heeded. I eagerly look forward to the next volume of his diaries.

This carefully annotated collection of diary entries and letters is an excellent exploration of the Western response to the rise of the Nazi party and its policies, especially towards its Jewish citizens. It provides much information and insights that would not be present in general histories of the 20th century and even in more specialized histories of the period.

My only complaint is the omission of the prolific St. Augustine, but his work is widely available elsewhere.

The book is an excellent source of African and Diasporian thought, scholarship, and epistemology. The authors do and excellent job juxtaposing the various creation stories using content analysis to show the parallells between the various creation stories. In addition, the authors do an excellent job of highlighting the various talented African scholars across the globe. The book is appropriately named and the content in the book definately lends itself to erudition.
