Ann's book is profound yet simple. A tale of one person's personal journey. An inspiration to all of us who have come to a crossroad and seek guidance and courage to overcome fear and seek spiritual enlightment. Reading about her experiences was an inspiration. "Truth from the Source" is such a gift for the Spirit, from the first glance at the cover to the moment you begin it again-
I read an average of 20 books a month, and have been a Seeker of inspirational literature for over thirty years- THIS BOOKS SPEAKS IN EVERY LANGUAGE-
Something enchanting has happened in Dr. Ann's life, and having applied that magic in such an enjoyable narrative brings a long-needed gift to anyone led to experience her loving gift of this book.
Many authors attempt to translate their own awakenings and fail because there is a selfishness and commerciality present in their sharing, I can honestly, from my Soul, encourage EVERYONE who wants to be reminded of their own depths and value to make this book their new "The Road Less Travelled"- (Which I have read 11 times and am now retiring from.)
Congratulations to Dr. Ann for her continued bravery of the Heart, and leading the way on a level never before accomplished-
This book makes my world an even more remarkable place, and it was pretty fantastic already!

Of course, I kinda knew who Eliot was! I was TOTALLY waiting for the big reveal. Anyway, this book kept me on my toes, and I totally wanted to get the whole story. Kinda like a cliffhanger all the way. But yeah, all those stupid relatives were a bunch of nasty people! Can't believe they wasted five years of the hero/heroine's lives!!! Yay for happy endings!!! (Obviously I loved the book, gave it four stars only coz I wanted the evil villains to have suffered more)

Vanessa James at her twisted, twisted best.

Vanessa utilises her two most effective devices here. The heroine with (selective) amnesia. And the thoroughly evil manipulative relatives. In my opinion American romance writers cannot do evil relatives. I mean. The heroine forgets about the man she loved, the fact that he married her and the baby she lost. For what? To live as a moonling companion to a malicious step-father. The entire plot hinges on the serendipitous death of the step-father. And if that hadn't happened neither Isobel nor Eliot would have found happiness together again. I just wanted to shake the pair of them.

Strictly speaking this story involves TWO doormats. Isobel and Eliot are abominably abused and lead by the nose by their jealous relatives. Both of them are supposed to be intelligent people. Eliot was a lawyer. Pardon me. But when a man marries, he becomes the legal guardian of his wife doesnt he? So why does Eliot allow the step-father to refuse him access to Isobel when she is injured in the car accident? Why does he get himself banged-up on a trumped up charge? Because he's a masochist who loves being a martyr. Thats why.

That Bobbi. What an abomination. That Edmund. What a perv. And let me just explain the 2 sets of parents relationships to each other. Hang on, I don't think I can.

Brilliant story. Beautiful ending.

One of the best!!!

"Turtle Wisdom--Coming Home to Yourself" by Donna DeNomme is a book that is clearly written from the heart. There is a teaching that says, "What come from the heart, enters into the heart." Ms DeNomme peppers her book with wisdom from Native American teachings. She was voted Colorado's "Spiritual Health Guru." She survived childhood trauma so she knows first hand how to heal and rise.

"You get... You!" is the theme that Ms DeNomme builds in this book. She teaches how to take care of your self along the way in the journey of life. The drawings throughout the book are sweet and whimsical. The author's words are encouraging and confident, sprinkled with a lighthearted tone. She shares thoughts and techniques as tools for life. Here is one technique I especially liked, quoted from the text:

"Cancel! Cancel! Each thought, every action has a vibration and impacts our life experience. There are times when you think, say, or do something that is not aligned with your genuine intention. Be aware of what you put out there. When you express yourself from that `off' place, you can neutralize your faux pas. ... This canceling approach is not meant to be an excuse for you to say and do horrible things, thinking you can then cancel them afterwards. You are responsible for the way you interact with others. ... Cancel! Cancel! Is a quality control technique for conscious energetic living." ... It is an attitudinal shift."

Here is another gem of wisdom the author shares:

"Where you are right now and who you are at this very moment is absolutely unique and precious. No matter what may be happening in your life, there is nothing about you that is truly broken. You do not need to be fixed. There is a part of you, which always remains intact, unscathed. The healing is in bringing forth the part of you which is always well."

This is a book that can help facilitate healing for the reader. If you crave the comfort, love, and guidance that's like a friend or sister whom you can curl up with, grab a cup of tea and snuggle up with "Turtle Wisdom".

Donna DeNomme's book is an eclectic mix of wisdom, encouragement and strategies for adapting and thriving when life gets tough. Quotes, poems, and particularly creative and amusing turtle drawings amplify DeNomme's writing. Her description of how one turtle adapts to protect itself from predators was especially informative, and had great relevance to the book's topic. A wonderful addition to DeNomme's work- perhaps as a follow-up volume- could focus on stories of how different types of turtles adopt to the unique challenges they encounter in the wild, and how their reactions to adversity offer lessons we can apply to our lives.

Strongly recommend....You MUST read this!

I do believe in Divine intervention and Turtle Wisdom was sent to me at this particular time.

After raising four boys, leaving a full time career for a part time job, and seeing my body shift, fall and spread when I turned 50, the question "who am I?" keeps bouncing around in my head.

From Turtle Wisdom, I gained inspiration, encouragement, guidance, and most of all -- me.

The format of this great little book is wonderful. No wasted words, no reading through excess fluff to get to the meat of the subject. It can be read as a whole or in parts; by chapter or by topic.

Turtle Wisdom is re-readable, perfect for beginning and / or ending the day. Turtle Wisdom is a must read for anyone who wants to embrace life. It is an easy read full of wisdom, quotes, and simple instructions for becoming YOU!

Thank you, Ms. DeNomme. I anxiously await your next book, Turtle Wisdom: The Companion- A Motivational Playbook and the Turtle Wisdom deck of cards.

Let's setup your own Apache Web Server!

This book is here to help the beginner in Apache, PHP, Perl and MySQL. If you have always fancy in setting up your own web server but have no idea of how to do it, this book is for you.

The author teaches you step-by-step from installing Apache web server, PHP and Perl to writing applications like database-enabled web applications using Perl, PHP and MySQL. He also touches a small portion of SSI (Server-sise Includes).

This book is indeed very good for beginners. However, please be warned that you may get frustrated by the typos and mistakes found in this book. Refer to the previous post, he mentioned some configuration issues which are helpful. Other than that, this book is definitely worth reading as you may learn a lot especially when you have no idea of what and how to use Apache, PHP, Perl, and MySQL.

For advanced readers, you may want to look into other books :)

I want to congratulate the author for writing such an excellent book for beginners to open-source software like Apache, PHP and mySQL. On windows platform does not bother me as it is the predominant operating system platform and easier to relate to, although I do hope the second version of this book might include a Linux-version.

The CD software includes the latest version of PHP, MySQL, Apache and Perl, although personally I think Perl should be less covered since PHP is much better. Also the section of IIS installation with PHP kind of distract the attention from Apache in the whole book.

Some typo errors in the book's codes, as well as installation errors not mentioned in the book could frustrate non-technical people: e.g. Not able to set up on my Windows XP (Home) for virtual host / Server Side Include / OpenSSL / Preventing Directory listing...also on PHPMyadmin (Chap 8), the book missed out a step to uncomment in PHP.INI the line extension=php_mysql.dll in order to get the nice result of Fig 8.30, otherwise you would contantly get this error "cannot load mysql extension'.

Overall the book is recommended to read through in one session (I spent 3 hours in one single night), then follow by practices in few other sessions on Apache, PHP and MySQL in sequence.

It has been an enriching and enjoyment experience for me. I highly recommend to all new commers in web-database application developers.

Eric Hunley's USING OPEN SOURCE WEB SOFTWARE WITH WINDOWS addresses some common issues with open source documentation, from Linux/UNIX focuses not easily accessible to Widows users to adapting these focuses to Windows environments. Chapters tell exactly how to adapt open source software to Windows environments, using four of the most popular Internet programs as examples. The focus on how to reduce costs in the process is also a welcome one.

While there is an awful lot of software available on the net, this book concentrates on software related to setting up web sites on systems running the Windows operating system. This includes the Apache web server, PHP to provide web/database interconnectivity, MySQL database, and Perl to provide more flexibility to your web sites. The CD-ROM included with the book includes copies of all of this software, so here is really all that you need to put up dynamic web sites.

I gues the question I would have to ask is that if you are using a system for a single application such as being a web server, why wouldn't you go all the way and use a Linux operating system under it, it would be faster, more reliable and less expensive. But if you gotta use Windows, here's all you need.

A good look at Escher's tessellation research.

Doris Schattschneider's book takes a look at Escher's research on the regular division of the plane.

1/8 on an iceberg is visible while 7/8 is hidden. Escher's prints are like this. The visible image is only a small part of the thought and preparation that lies beneath the surface. Schattschneider takes us beneath the surface and shines a light on this hidden behemoth.

This volume is more demanding and difficult than other Escher books. But it is rewarding to delve into.

Meticulous, tenacious, thorough, playful. My adjectives for Escher are driven home even more forcefully by this book.

Ms Schattschneider did a fine job putting this book together.

The definitive book on Escher's repeating pattern work.

As a child, Maurits Cornelis Escher fitted together irregular pieces of cheese in his sandwiches so that they would completely fill the space between the slices of bread. From the very beginnings of his career as an artist, in 1921, he devised ways of interlocking images so as to leave no empty space, and then of making these images repeat infinitely in increasingly complex ways. Professor Schattschneider's magnificently illustrated volume analyses this critical aspect of Escher's work, focussing on a series of 137 symmetry drawings and watercolors created from 1926 to 1971, which the artist kept in five folders throughout his lifetime and which he used as references for his continuing work on the regular division of the plane. Included are analogies from each of these works (which now sell for tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars each) to his original prints and projects. As owner of and dealer in the main body of Escher's original prints, drawings and watercolors, which were previously on loan to the Hague Museum, I make extensive use of this book and commend it to all. Some of the text is written for the layman; other portions of the writing are technical and will be of interest to mathematicians and crystallographers. In addition, the quantity and quality of the full-page color illustrations, few of which are to be found in any other publication in print, contribute to making this book, which serves as a catalogue raisonné of the symmetry drawings and watercolors, eminently collectable.

The other key books on Escher are M.C. ESCHER: HIS LIFE AND COMPLETE GRAPHIC WORK; THE MAGIC MIRROR OF M.C. ESCHER; THE GRAPHIC WORK OF M.C. ESCHER; and ESCHER ON ESCHER. Persons technically inclined may also be interested in ART AND SCIENCE, which constitutes the proceedings of the 1985 Escher conference in Rome.

An excellent example of the method to the genius

It also includes anecdotes told by his friends, and reproductions of all three of the metamorphosis. Truly Brilliant! You can't go wrong with this book, be you mathemetitian, or artist

Henry Hampton and Steve Fayer have collected a small sampling of civil rights oral history that has yet to be duplicated in a modern book on the era. They have included all of the key figures involved in the movement, Dr. King and Malcolm X, along with Stokely Carmichael, John Lewis and Andrew Young. What they have also done is give readers the non-famous persons perspective on the various events surrounding the movement. This has been invaluable to me in my research and a truly enjoyable read. It should be a must read for everyone!

VOICES OF FREEDOM: AN ORAL HISTORY OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT FROM THE 1950S THROUGH THE 1980s shows readers the steps that were taken to achieve equal rights for African Americans and all American citizens. All of the important actors, activists, politicians, and average individuals who attempted and succeeded to change a society that had been blinded for hundreds years, are mentioned and heard who helped many American citizens to gain the respect they rightfully deserved as citizens and human beings of the United States of America, and not ambiguous written clauses of the US Constitution referring to property.

Henry Hampton and Steven Fayer along with Sarah Flynn compile a host of significant people of the civil rights era of the 1950s to 1980s. With their testimonials and eyewitness accounts they share their collective memories of the past to clarify misconceptions and misinterpretations that involved the activism that existed to spearhead the civil rights movement. They also revealed the disjointedness and lack of effort to keep the momentum going and the bureaucratic ramblings hat slowed and deadlocked the movement during the late 1960s. Key figures and activists are mentioned, such as Martin Luther King, Jr. and his many cohorts who led the way toward a peaceful and non-violent movement as did the Black Panthers who were portrayed as militants, and who's history has been misconstrued with controversy. Indeed, both movements shared a common goal, which was to achieve freedom and equality.

The book begins with one of the major incidents that jump started the civil rights movement in the 1950s, the Emmett Till incidence in 1955. Other monumental events proceed, such as the discussion and explanation of Brown v. Board of Education, the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955-56, the Little Rock Crisis, the March on Washington in 1963 and a list of other significant events. The book ends with issue of Affirmative Action that occurred in Atlanta from 1973-1980. Thoughts come to mind while reading about these events -- some things change, and some things never stop being an issue.

The Civil Rights Movement has not gone away. Every decade in American history has had a movement led by average citizens who wanted to make a change. But books such as VOICES OF FREEDOM helps readers identify the movers and shakers of American society who helped bring the truth of freedom and democracy, which are embedded in the Declaration of Independence as well as the Constitution of the United States, as a reality. Possibly now may be a good time to revisit these voices of freedom.

A Treasure! One of the most moving books about the Movement

Starting with the murder of Emmett Till and ending with the political activism in the 80s, this book gives a moving overview of the civil rights movement. Each of the 31 chapters first gives a short summary of the events and then redraws the situation with eye-witness accounts. Many activists like Coretta Scott King, Harry Belafonte and members of the Black Panther Party, to name a few, give intriguing details. This moving book is easy to read and especially recommended for young people who need first hand information about the movement. Really recommended!

WHITEFEATHER'S WOMAN is a terrific tale of love between two deeply hurt souls from different backgrounds. Ms. Hale's well written story is a sincerely touching tale that will make you wish every hero is as tender as John and every heroine as caring as Jane.

The entire Montana Maverick series are superb stories and the historicals are the best. I have not read them all so I don't know if I've listed all the historicals, but here are a few not to be missed: 1. Montana Mavericks-Big Sky Brides 2. Montana Mavericks-Wild West Wife 3. Montana Mavericks-Gunslinger's Bride 4. Montana Mavericks-Convenient Wife The entire series is quite large and contains contemporary stories as well.

Another emotional read....

When it comes to romances, it's always about the guy for me. Oh, I want a well-drawn heroine, but my enjoyment hinges largely on whether the author has created a hero I can fall in love with. Deborah Hale has done it here with the gentle-natured, blue-eyed Cheyenne leader, John Whitefeather. Handsome, strong, gentler of wild mustangs and flighty maidens.... But Hale's heroine is no slouch, either. She has come west to Big Sky Country to escape violence at the hands of her erstwhile fiancé. A city girl, she's a fish out of water, but she's a quick study. Whitefeather himself is no stranger to violence at the hands of the more powerful, which gives him a profound bond with Jane. But how can either of them be sure Jane's need for him is not borne solely from her need of a protector? Another emotionally rewarding story from Deborah Hale.

John Whitefeather is a hero who will linger in your imagination long after you've finished reading Whitefeather's Woman. Using the perfect balance of strength and vulnerability, Deborah Hale has created John Whitefeather, a man who has his own secrets and prejudices, yet finds room in his heart for shy, emabttled Jane Harris. Jane wants to start a new life in the wild west, far from the frightening world she's escaped. Her plans don't include falling in love, yet John's gentle ways are exactly the balm she needs to heal her wounds. Make room on your bookshelf for Whitefeather's Woman. The case can be made for this amazing(1) book with three little words: Huzzah for WILSON! Imagine you have been commissioned by the Misanthropological Society of Mars in the year 2006(2) to dissertate about life on the bugbog(3) planet, but find that all life and vestige of civilization have been wiped out by something or another, and that all that remains are some pages of an annoying book called "Misanthropology" (op. cit.). Get the idea? WILSON is not about that at all, but it is an amazingly amusing book; witty, philosophical, likened unto Nabokov's "Pale Fire" (q.v.) because of the footnotes, or unto Mendoza's "Sin Noticias de Gurb" (q.v.) which has no footnotes, but is in Spanish.(4)

(1) Or amusing, as the case may be.(a)
(2) A Martian day is 40 minutes longer than an earth day, and we can presume(b) that earth and Mars have a common 1 A.D. origin. With this info, can you calculate the length of a Martian year?(c)
(3) The planet earth is so described in "Misanthropology: A Florilegium of Bahumbuggery" (q.v.), wherein is posed an unnerving riddle-me-ree, to wit: What do you get if you cross a buzzbug with a diet colt?(d)
(4) Ja ja

(a) Or maybe not
(b) An unwarranted presumption? Who cares? (Dr. Livingstone, I presume)
(c) Based on the information given: no way, Jose[1]
(d) Answer: Buzz Liteyear, or a bugling. (Don't get it? Derive the middle term)[2]

[1] Ha ha. To research Martian years, try Google.
[2] Don't read further unless you give up on the middle term, which follows: A diet colt is a lite yearling. (N'est-ce pas? Now go back and get it.)

* In some versions, AND GENTLELADIES! (too wordy). Trout suggests GENTLEPEOPLE! (doesn't resonate). I say, let it STET.

Is This A Book or Is It A Con?

The writing of David Mamet can be simple, much like a open jaw- steel bear trap lying exposed, at your feet. Or this open jaw- steel bear trap can really be a ravenous black hole in the center of your literary universe, a hungry black hole waiting to devour you, if you are dumb enough to go spelunking into it's center, the vortex. While reading "Wilson" ask yourself the following questions:
1)Is this a book or is it a con?
2)Is "Wilson" a series of unpublished chapters from previous works by the author?
3)Or, is "Wilson" really a surrealistic landscape onto itself much like "The Interzone" of William S.Burroughs?
Do not read "Wilson" in chronological order!
Very rarely does an author such as David Mamet compose a snub- nose revolver like "Wilson" in which the printed words within begin to tell us everything about the author's style, but always end by telling us almost nothing about the writer's style. Good!
David Mamet has informed and confounded us again.

Twisted meta-history

If you locked Vladimir Nabokov's "Pale Fire" and Mark Z. Danielewski's "House of Leaves" in a dark room together, the resulting love child might resemble David Mamet's "Wilson: A Consideration of the Sources." This quirky, twisted "novel" takes a look at literature, pop culture, and... oh, come on, no one can tell.

Imagine a future where the literary history of the world has been put on the computer, and then the entire Internet has crashed. Culture and history as we know it have vanished. So now only a few fragments remain, and must be pieced back together with painstaking (and sometimes insane) skill. Not to mention a lot of (pitiful) academic bickering.

The result is an intricate study of the Bootsie Club, the haunted stories of Binky Beaumont, the mysterious death of Woodrow Wilson's wife, Lola Montez, soap, the Cola Riots, analyzation of the peculiar diary entries ("Dear Diary, I am surprised that I am surprised anymore"), fragments of novels, and interestingly weird poetry.

It's almost impossible to fully describe "Wilson: A Consideration of the Sources," especially since it is only a novel in the sense that everything in it is fictional. Don't expect a linear storyline, or a story in one chunk. That's too normal, too ordinary, and too little fun. So Pulitzer-winning playwright/screenwriter/novelist Mamet takes a different route.

It has no beginning. It has no real end. It can be read backwards, forwards, or from the middle outward. It's constantly self-referencing. It's a giant mass of snippets, anecdotes, and analyses. And while at first it seems like a dense, nonsensical mass of fictional bits, eventually the brain adjusts to it.

Mamet spoofs the pompous tone that academics use -- there are studies of nursery rhymes in here! The smallest and most ridiculous bits of literature and history are studied, such as the Joke Code, a philosophical look at humor. In a possible homage to Nabokov, he also peppers the whole thing with footnotes.

Every time the text seems to be getting too serious, Mamet throws in a footnote that proclaims "Why? Because it makes a pretty picture" or proclaiming, "Yah yah yah yah. I'm rubber and you're glue." And don't forget his poetry: "The ponderous burdens of the few/to license, nay, inaugurate the new/peregrinations of the Wandering Jew..."

Postmodernist comedy is at the heart of Mamet's twisted meta-history. "Wilson: A Consideration of the Sources" is hard to get into, but becomes weirdly funny when you "get it."

Shapiro's spiritual experience resulted in her production of a journal transcribing the thoughts that were reaching her from beyond. Wisdom's Choice contains the messages which she received in a 40 day period, providing a series of spiritual messages average readers will easily absorb.

I was sent this book by a friend. I had some time so I opened it up and started reading. I read one page and starting crying. It was so powerful, so perfect, so much where I was at the time. I couldn't put it down, yet I wanted to savor it and not finish. I know now I will go back to it many times. It is one of the simplest yet most profound books I've ever read. Before I finished it I could think of 20 people I wanted to buy it for and send it to.
This book will change lives, buy it and have it change yours.

As a skeptic, I was hesitant to open Shapiro's book. But the words spoke to me and touched my heart in a way that I cannot express. Simple, elegent encouragement for this journey we call life! It's totally practical advice, too. Nothing out of the ordinary from this 'spiritual healer'. Thank you!

Since purchasing WISDOM'S CHOICE, I have had the opportunity to read it and read it again. Each time I was challenged to stop and think not only about Kathryn's words but how they might apply to my own life and spiritual world view. Since I am someone who is quite spiritual I did not have much trouble accepting her thoughts or even the fact that she believes they came to her from a higher power. What I enjoyed most was the breaking down of simple words such as disease (dis ease) and nothing (no thing)and the pages that are filled with food for thought. The book does not preach but rather suggests that you take your own interpretation on what you read. Gently written yet seems to pack a soulful spiritual punch. Size and style make for a nice gift book. If you enjoy thinking about what you have read then this is a must have book. Go a little deeper with WISDOM'S CHOICE!

Even though this book is geared towards children, it was a great resource when I was student teaching in a sixth grade language arts class. You won't be sorry if you buy this one!

This is a great book for when I do projects and research papers. It has grammar and bibliographic information which helps me to do correct term papers. I am 12 years old which makes it easier for me to find things. The best thing about this book is that you don't have to hassle to find a piece of writing information when it is all in one book.
