Best ACT Review Material Available!

I am a high school instructor who has worked with gifted and college-prep students for fifteen years. Preparing for the ACT is a major concern for most college-bound, high school juniors & seniors.

I have presented extensive ACT workshops to students over the years and have used numerous ACT prep and self-help books. THIS IS BY FAR THE BEST BOOK THAT I HAVE EVER OFFERED TO STUDENTS!

The book is small, concise, and loaded with great information:

a.) Each of the 4 parts of the ACT is broken down into understandable objectives,

b.) Specific types of questions that consistently appear on every ACT are revealed,

c.) Uniquely helpful strategies are presented for each section (along with examples that appear as typcal ACT questions).

This book proves that "GOOD THINGS REALLY DO COME IN SMALL PACKAGES!"

My daughter loves this little book!

Like many high school students, my daughter carries a back pack that is almost as big as she is. This little book gets more use than the bigger ACT book we bought because she carries it around with her and actually uses it. Good idea!

Josh Melrod is a gas and a grove. This cat has serious chops when it comes to writing a story. He just may be the next great american writer no one has ever heard of. Tara Weigh is to non-fiction what Celia Cruz was to Salsa. Give these artists a chance and they will amaze, I promise you that.

At first glance, it might be mistaken for an old Farmer's Almanac-which is a good thing. One of the things that kills me about lit mags (and I read a lot of them) is the way they all wind up looking the same, with a few notable exceptions. This is one of the notable exceptions-not just the look of it, which is beautiful (hand done illustrations grounded firmly in American printmaking traditions)-but page through and you'll find surprising, challenging stories by names you know and names you don't. The first story, by Bob Olmstead, is fantastic-it sets the bar pretty high and the other stories, for the most part, clear it. I'm looking forward to the next issue.

A Very Well Done Anthology

Aimee Bender is one of my favorite writers and I loved her story. She has a wicked sense of humor, but it was touching and sad too. Also really good were the stories by Jonathan Tell and Robert Olmstead (very different from his stories in "River Dogs"). I enjoyed the book as a whole and thought the illustrations were cool and unique.

This book is a superb, concise, up-to-date review of basic physiology in the form of charts, tables, diagrams and illustrations. The book is exceptionally well-organized and focused, which permits ready access to the information. Although designed primarily for medical students, it is also valuable for physicians interested in concise and accurate review information. I found that it provided me with all the basic information that I needed to review for the Boards. This book should be in the library of every physician who is interested in keeping current. Highly recommended!

Although the text contains charts, tables, mnemonics, and fast facts, its strength is its charts. There are a huge number of them, and they are very detailed and well-organized. For example, renal physiology, which is always a challenge, contains some exeptional charts,(specifically, p.312, Summary of Renal Tubular Function). The book also includes relevant anatomy and clinical information - a definite bonus. As with most mnemonics, some are useful, while others are simply good for amusement.

Based on the frequently correct assumption that men and women disagree about "what is funny, romantic, adventurous, and too violent on screen," Jean Warmbold, a film buff and screenplay writer, has compiled this comprehensive listing of great "chick flicks." In other words, here's a collection of descriptions of comedies, romances, thrillers, and classics that women can really warm up to. Or as the author so cleverly puts it in her introduction, "blood relations over bloodbaths, apt wit over slapstick, mindful deed over mindless speed, and strong female characters who are no longer trapped inside a man's imagination or fantasies." Whatever you call it, it's an invaluable guide for movie viewing with your favorite girl!

Instead of blindly searching for the perfect video to match your interests, peruse this comprehensive collection of titles and their reviews to insure you come home with a winner every time. Ms. Warmbold's reviews are thoughtful as well as insightful and a welcome help to the viewer. She includes the date, director, writer and cast of each video and film which is an added bonus to round out the background. Searching by categories aids in selection.

There's bound to be something a friend can enjoy in this! This book covers all genres of movies, and although men can certainly enjoy it, it does seem to speak to the female population. These are not "chick flicks", but almost all other movie review book are reviewed by men. These reviews by a female are very refreshing. Hope you all enjoy it as much as I have!

Then out spake brave Horatius,/ The Captain of the Gate:/ ``To every man upon this earth/ Death cometh soon or late./ And how can man die better/ Than facing fearful odds,/ For the ashes of his fathers,/ And the temples of his gods/ ... Then none was for a party;/ Then all were for the state;/ Then the great man helped the poor,/ And the poor man loved the great:/ Then lands were fairly portioned;/ Then spoils were fairly sold:/ The Romans were like brothers/ In the brave days of old./ Now Roman is to Roman/ More hateful than a foe,/ And the Tribunes beard the high,/ And the Fathers grind the low./ As we wax hot in faction,/ In battle we wax cold:/ Wherefore men fight not as they fought/ In the brave days of old./

I've just begun reading Ms. Hill's books and am enjoying the journey. This particular story drew me in from the first page, and I loved it immensely. Michael is so honorable and selfless that it's impossible not to get on his bandwagon for helping his chums from his childhood and improve their lot. His love for Starr is pure and selfless as well. I loved the read so much that I would tell my husband about it each day, and he got to where he'd ask me what happened next. The final several chapters we actually read to each other and savored the ending together. We've never done that with any other book. This one was that special. The proverbial "must read."

Loved it!

This book is one of Grace Livingston Hill's best. I love the fact that Michael keeps his word about helping other "street kids" like himself. The romance eliment is subtle, but it's very powerful and touching.

Moving book, with wholesome romance and satisfying morale.

This book was really powerful. I am not a crier, but I found my emotions touched by this beautiful story. One can almost see the author's love for humankind shining through. The main character was a wonderful man, suitable for being a hero to any little boy. I think the author truly must have been inspired to write such a magnificent piece of literature. This book was so good, I wish that everybody could truly appreciate it like I do. I have several friends who have also discovered the beauty in this long-forgotten book. I am hoping to read more of this author

I bought Maida books at garage sales when I was a child in the 70's. I loved them and read them over and over. Despite how dated they are (or maybe partially because of it) my own four children love them too. I just finished reading Maida's Little Shop and Maida's Little House to them for the third time. Every few years, we have to do it again. As is typical, the first few books in this series are the best ones.

If you don't have a feel for working-class Boston in the early 1900's after reading Maida's Little Shop, you just weren't paying attention. They're very evocative books. What I wouldn't give to be able to see Primrose Court on a sunny October day, hear the school bell ring, and taste a pickled lime!

So glad this has been reprinted!

I am so glad this book has been reprinted. I hope they do the entire series. My mother read these books as a child and has collected some of them over the past few years. I read the first few and was completely enchanted by the sweet stories and wholesome writing. The books may seem dated, but the storyline still holds its charm. I am looking forward to seeing more of these books reprinted!

my mother collected wonderful books and this was one of the series that she collected. Maida's little shop is the first in a series that capitvated me as a child and one of the first chapter books i ever read, it tells the story of Maida Westabrook the only child of "Buffalo" Westabrook a millionaire in the vein of Daddy Warbucks from the time period directly following, lame since an illness, (possibly polio) she is directed by her fathers private physcian to find something to occupy her time, having always had tutors and unable to go to school, one day while driving with her father, his doctor and Billy, a reporter of her father's accquaintance they find a small shop in Boston that catches her interest, soon she is installed in the shop with her companion/governess, "Granny" who is an Irish woman searching for her lost daughter and her family.
Keeping the store Maida and Granny soon make friends with the little children of Primrose Court then the older children and Maida is sworn to secrecy about who she is and her father, so of course the children don't believe the fantasical stories of the places she has been and the things she has seen, of course until the end which I am not going to give away,
this is a charming read for parents who want to read to their children and although now it is dated and the writing considered simplistic and almost childish in this day and age it is still worth a read, after all, I am forty-two years old, I haven't read this book in thirty years or better and I can still remember this much of it that must say something to the timelessness of the book.
