Read this BEFORE you take accounting!Review Date: 2008-04-22
A friend recommended this as an additional book that might help explain things, so I ordered a copy. If only I'd read this before starting the course! It explains, in neat and concise language, many of the concepts with which I'd been having a large amount of trouble. It quickly shows how the balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement work together to explain what is happening in the business.
My only complaint is that this book doesn't really discuss journal entries. Perhaps that's intentional and might be one reason why this book works, but given how effective it is at simplifying everything else, I would love to have the benefit on Tracy's insight on this as well.
While this book would never replace a full accounting textbook, it should be required reading before ever touching any major text. By focusing on one single company and set of statements, you can concentrate on the concepts without having to try to understand a different set of numbers. This makes a world of difference when trying to understand how everything works together. Once these basic concepts are understood, more advanced details make more sense and things fall into place much, much faster.
Make no mistake: accounting is a different language that takes a long time to learn. Think of this book as a phrase book you use to learn the essentials before (if you must) tackling how the language works. No, you won't be able to tear apart the books and become a genius investor, but it'll turn on the lightbulb that will let you understand other books.

Devastating InfidelityReview Date: 2008-05-17
If your husband isn't having an affair it's still a very good bookReview Date: 2008-05-02
Generally Anne and Brian had a very good marriage and nice children, you wouldn't have thought that anything would have damaged their marriage. But it happened to them.
The book was extremely gripping because you had the idea that everything would blow over and get sorted quickly, but it didn't, and a lot of drama happened before Brian decided his marriage was worth saving.
This was another surprize that a father could abandon his children and set up with a woman he didn't know that well, and incur huge expenses and pain, when there weren't any major problems like alcohol, drugs, violence or gambling, disability, with his wife or children.
It also showed the horrendous effect Brian's actions had on the entire family. Just when you thought it was unbearable, it became more unbearable.
Sharing the painReview Date: 2008-02-14
This book is a must for everyone who goes through such a horrible experience. It helps one to know that our reactions are quite normal and not as the "guilty" party often tends to think, abnormal or over the top. Pain is pain and healing takes time. There is a lot to learn about oneself and one's partner in this book. Read it, ask your partner to read it and find a good councilor to talk to. You too can save your relationship.
Hats off to two courageous people who shared their pain with the rest of the world!
A little too religiousReview Date: 2007-11-20
If you can make it through the first two thirds of the book the ending is actually not too bad. The first two thirds are heavy with religion. Anne does not eat for the first two weeks after she finds out about her husbands affair as she is 'fasting' for religious reasons.
I think she was developing an eating disorder. How ridiculous to not eat for two weeks. It is dangerous and irresponsible for someone with children to take care of.
If you are into God you might find this book readable. If you are not I would give it a miss.
If you are looking to repair a relationship after an affair I would recommend - Infidelity: A Survival Guide by Don-David Lusterman & NOT "Just Friends": Rebuilding Trust and Recovering Your Sanity After Infidelity by Shirley Glass. Both of these books talk you through the steps required to move on and understand why affairs happen.

Say "no" to perimenopauseReview Date: 2008-01-12
Lone voice hereReview Date: 2004-12-09
- he rejects all herbal remedies because they have not been FDA approved. I admit there are problems with quality control and no you shouldn't ask the check out clerk for advice on natural remedies but there are other educated practitioners, even doctors, who can give advice on natural remedies.
- he is too quick to recommend a hysterectomy. While he says that you shouldn't have a D & C to try to identify excessive bleeding if you're going to have any surgery you might as well have a hysterectomy, forget myomectomy or any other less invasive surgery. I'm quite happy that I got rid of my fibroids with a myomectomy and still have my uterus - thank goodness my doctor didn't agree with this book.
- the book is 4 years old now and doesn't take into consideration the recent studies which show that HRT may not be the right way to go. I'd like to know how those studies affect his recommendation that all perimenopausal women take low dose birth control pills
- he seems to have only one answer for perimenopause and that's low dose birth control pills. I'm always suspicious of complicated problems that have only one answer.
I'm still looking for a book that I feel comfortable with.

This is the first one of a fantastic series that serves as a standard reference for mountain culture. If you are a writer that has any intention of either historical--frontier descriptions or including characters from the region this entire series should be on your shelf or in the local library. Reading them will give flavor to your work.
As a reader you can check to see if the hog killing scene from COLD MOUNTAIN is authentic. This is just one example, there are thousands of others.

Good boy, Spot!Review Date: 2008-01-04
The book focuses on mama dog Sally's search for her wayward pup Spot, who is late for supper. Each page finds Sally in a different part of the house, and contains a lift-up flap that hides a different animal. The text is kept to a minimum (usually it's just "Is he under the bed, etc.?" followed by "No"), but it has a rhythm that really drew my son's interest and had him eagerly turning pages in the hopes of eventually finding Spot. The illustrations add to the book's charm. There are plenty of bright colors and the animals are just irresistible. I'm a confirmed cynic, but even I can't help but grin when Sally and Spot finally settle down for their dinner. My son's enthusiastic "Good boy, Spot" only makes that smile wider.
As simple as the book may seem, it does include plenty of learning opportunities, from identifying the various animals and colors to the household items and shapes. The repeated use of the word "No" also provides a simple example of how letters are combined to make a word.
This fun little book gets my highest recommendation, and more importantly it get's Connor's "Again, again!" seal of approval. It's a great addition to any toddler's library, and would make a great baby shower gift as well.
Where's Spot? ***VIDEO***Review Date: 2003-07-31
This video is great for a baby's first cartoon/TV to watch. It is not too "busy" (or too long) for babies like other cartoons can be. I noticed my daughter *really* watching it and smiling and laughing at it around four months old. And she has enjoyed it ever since (and is now 3). It's cute and simple - perfect for babies and toddlers.
With my daughter interested in Spot, it gave me time to do some dishes or read the day's mail - uninterupted! I highly recommend *ALL* the Spot videos (although the longer ones, like the Christmas one, my daugter didn't get into as much until she was about two). "Where's Spot" and "Spot at the Farm" are her favorites. And she enjoys the books too.
Also - I recommend Kipper the Dog videos too. They are also the same simple shapes/characters and sceneries and stories, just like Spot. And Maisy Mouse videos and books. I never see any babies and toddlers who don't like Spot, Kipper, and Maisy. The Baby Mozart videos are also excellent. Kids are drawn to them. None of the above are wastes of money - and they enjoy them from babyhood into toddlerhood.

WISH I FOUND IT SOONER! Parent to a mute child who signs as his primary communicationReview Date: 2008-04-07
The only problem I really see from this book is that its not big enough. For now at my sons age and language level I think it is perfect. However when things become more complicated in his language I can see a need for something more intense. It is my hope that by that stage my son will have mastered other methods of communication such as typing a word into his dynavox to tell me what the sign means. I hope that this is the case for other parents and interpreters also.
I now buy this book as a gift for parents who were not previously signers who find their children either can't speak or are deaf. I think it is that neccesary.
I only wish I had found it sooner!

Pretty Amazing!Review Date: 2008-04-10
It also accuratley described a relationship between my cousin and myself. All of our lives he has told me, "I don't know why. I just want to take care of you. I have a feeling I NEED to take care of you." According to the book he has a karmic debt to pay me from a past life. After reading this book we both understood better our connection.
If you aren't inclined to believe in this stuff anyway, this book probably won't convince you of anything, but if you are open minded and intuitive about the people you meet and your hunches about them this book will confirm those intuitions with an uncanny accuracy!
Furthermore, my personality card is a 5 of Hearts. It nailed me dead on and explained my fear of committment and my desire for freedom and adventure. YES! All of my life I have felt I am here on this planet to gobble up experiences and thus, I don't want to be tied down or held back. It has been a problem for me. This book also explains why when I am in love I am such a pushover. In love I become the Queen of Hearts. The most giving and romantic card. So true.
It won't only explain love and chemisty but also talks about Saturn connections where you feel opressed or critizised by the other. Watch out if you and your boss have these connections. Mars connections indicate sexual attraction, but can also indicate bickering. Pluto connections affect us deeply and can transform us totally, which can be painful.
There is also an excellent chapter in the back of the book on spiritual relationships that I found very enlightening and very true.
This book is a wonder and I will have it for years to come.

The main problems I have with this book are 1) the language is sometimes difficult to understand especially in the introductory chapters of the book, and 2) the book gives a lot of "don'ts" but not many "do's" - for instance regarding the measurement of cash flow, the author tells you all the wrong ways of doing it, but neglects to tell you the right way of measuring cash flow.
I have given the book 3 stars because it does have some interesting parts. But if you're new to accounting I would instead recommend getting the book Financial Statements by Thomas Ittelson.
PS: This review is for the Sixth Edition of the book.
