"Warning Signs" written by Stephen White, is the tenth installment in the long running series featuring clinical psychologist, Alan Gregory.

Dr. Gregory has a new patient, a confused, anguished, irritated, and menopausal woman, who needs more help than even Dr. Gregory can originally detect. Under the protection of doctor-patient confidentiality, this woman reluctantly explains the details of her frightening dilemma. During her time with Dr. Gregory, she burdens him with information that has the ethical doctor contemplating breaking the rules of psychotherapy which he holds so dear. Information that gives him reasonable cause to discontinue treating her, however this knowledge also makes it impossible for him to walk away.

I'd say this is one of the better books in the series, however...With every addition to the series I become a little more irritated with Alan and his lack of a backbone when it comes to his relationship with his wife. In the last book, The Program, Alan was wary about giving his wife his honest opinion when they were out shopping. He has no problem lying to her to guard his sense of ethics or to protect a patients privacy, but when she ask for his honest opinion about an impending purchase of a baby crib, he gets as nervous as a Chihuahua. In this installment, Lauren (his wife) wants to go shopping, this time for baby shoes. It happens to be Alan's day off and he doesn't particularly want to shop, however he is afraid to tell her as much - what a namby-pamby - and is only silently gleeful when a phone call from his friend Sam gives him the perfect way out of the shopping excursion without actually having to tell his wife - "No". Stephen White has given Alan Gregory enough personality and real life human character flaws, why, why, why, does he feel the need to make him out to be such a wuss when it comes to his marital relationship. I can certainly appreciate that he is sensitive to her special needs, but I find his wussiness (is that a word?) ineffectual. Still, it was a good mystery, and one that I'd recommend.

I started reading this series from book one, Priviledged Information, and each installment is better than the one before, which is no simple chore. Warning Signs is fast paced and doesn't disappoint. The author can take several seemingly unrelated stories and weave them together in a way that may not always answer all of the questions, but certainly leaves you wondering. The "bad guy" may do horrible things, but the story is told with the psychological insight that doesn't make the reader hate him.

Good story, but it shouldn't include a street guide

This is a good page-turner including mystery and psycholgy. But the writer choose to include too many "street guide" details on locations. Sometimes reading the book felt like reading driving directions from Mapquest! It's good do descibe the surroundings, but not to that level of detail.

Annotation: Warning Signs is about the killing of Boulder's very prominent and popular D.A. The clinical psychologist, Dr. Alan Gregory, immediatley worries. His wife did work for the D.A. Alan's new patient seems to represent more than just another hour of pay. She has a secret that will literally, rock, Colorado. Things become especially dangerous when Alan realizes the link between the dead D.A. and his new patient. A definate page turner, never a dull moment.

Author Bio: Stephen White was born on Long Island and raised in New York, New Jersey, and Southern California. He attended the University of California at Irvine and Los Angeles. His 13th novel in the series, Missing Persons is due out in March 2005.

Evaluation:Warning Signs is about a clinical psychologist, Alan Gregory, living in the picture-esque Boulder, Colorado. First his wife's boss, Royal Peterson, the D.A. of Boulder is killed. From then on a troubling chain of events ensue. Dr.Gregory gets a new patient, Naomi Biggs, who seems desperate to talk to someone. When Naomi's confessions of her son, who turns out to be dead, and his friend Ramp are revealed Dr.Gregory's life is changed. He now has to wonder if he should go to the police, or anyone without being unethical. Life or death of many he knows hangs on whether or not to betray Naomi's confidence. Almost instantly, after Naomi leaves a troubling message and after Dr.Gregory tells his suspicions, they are proven true. Bombs go off everywhere and secrets are no more. Everythings changed from a normal days work to life or death.
I really enjoyed this book because of all the twist and turns. It was hard to know who to trust and who not to. It seemed as if every person had a secret to tell buy only when the time was right. I like how the author added depth to the characters. I felt myself really identifying with different aspects of everyone's personalitys. The book was never annoying or boring and it kept me in suspense until the last page.

A fast pace thriller....

I couldn't lay the book out of my hands until I finished if to the very end.
This is a typical White's book with the brilliant psychological insights and the fast pace rhythm of the plot.
Dr. Alan stand in front of an ethical dilemma - whether to break the client-patient contract or to ignore the "warning signs" and keep his patients secrets with him even though his wife could be in danger for her life...

I enjoyed it a lot and can't wait for the next White's one.

My husband had an affair with a married woman while I was pregnant with his twins. I'm not sure it gets worse that that. This book has really helped me understand the process of healing after infidelity through the eyes of a woman that was strong then devastated and has been there. When I am struggling with the pain I think of this book and I know its OK it will pass.

This book was inspiring. Perfect for me and others in the same situation, who's husband has had an affair but you are both willing to try and work things out. This book helped me to see things in a more positive light, helped both of us to understand each other, and gave advice and consoling every step of the way. Just hearing her story, written from day one like a diary entry, helped me to realise that I was not alone and her feelings and ups and downs were very similar to what I went through. It was nice to have that and know that she went through the same things and came out better on the other side. I bought several books on this subject, and some were just depressing or made me more angry, this is the only one I really ended up relying on.

If your husband isn't having an affair it's still a very good book

I saw Anne Bercht on Oprah. I thought the programme was extremely helpful so I bought the book. The show pointed out that a lot of affairs happen when a marriage seems extremely healthy. This was a big surprize to me.

Generally Anne and Brian had a very good marriage and nice children, you wouldn't have thought that anything would have damaged their marriage. But it happened to them.

The book was extremely gripping because you had the idea that everything would blow over and get sorted quickly, but it didn't, and a lot of drama happened before Brian decided his marriage was worth saving.

This was another surprize that a father could abandon his children and set up with a woman he didn't know that well, and incur huge expenses and pain, when there weren't any major problems like alcohol, drugs, violence or gambling, disability, with his wife or children.

It also showed the horrendous effect Brian's actions had on the entire family. Just when you thought it was unbearable, it became more unbearable.

Sharing the pain

No person who has not experienced a partner's unfaithfulness, can begin to understand the incredible pain, humiliation and loss of dignity this brings about. Even the person causing the pain cannot truly understand what his or her actions caused, until he/she reads "My husband's Affair became the best thing that ever happened to me". It is only through reading both Anne and Brian's account of their feelings and emotions that one can learn that each of us, no matter how different, will experience similar emotional pain and often react very similar under these circumstances. The persons causing the pain often have similar reasons for doing what they did.

This book is a must for everyone who goes through such a horrible experience. It helps one to know that our reactions are quite normal and not as the "guilty" party often tends to think, abnormal or over the top. Pain is pain and healing takes time. There is a lot to learn about oneself and one's partner in this book. Read it, ask your partner to read it and find a good councilor to talk to. You too can save your relationship.

Hats off to two courageous people who shared their pain with the rest of the world!

A little too religious

I bought this book because I was searching for some hope that people make it through affairs.

If you can make it through the first two thirds of the book the ending is actually not too bad. The first two thirds are heavy with religion. Anne does not eat for the first two weeks after she finds out about her husbands affair as she is 'fasting' for religious reasons.

I think she was developing an eating disorder. How ridiculous to not eat for two weeks. It is dangerous and irresponsible for someone with children to take care of.

If you are into God you might find this book readable. If you are not I would give it a miss.

If you are looking to repair a relationship after an affair I would recommend - Infidelity: A Survival Guide by Don-David Lusterman & NOT "Just Friends": Rebuilding Trust and Recovering Your Sanity After Infidelity by Shirley Glass. Both of these books talk you through the steps required to move on and understand why affairs happen.

Well written and informative. Book is divided into short and very digestible chapters that focus on various aspects of financial reporting. I found the information on the future of the auditing and financial reporting industry following the downfall of Enron and Worldcom and the passage of Sarbanes-Oxley to be particulary timely and interesting.

As a first year MBA in the middle of my accounting course I was still struggling. I'd aced Accounting as an undergrad, but only then realized Accounting in undergrad is more akin to book-keeping than financial analysis - BIG difference!

A friend recommended this as an additional book that might help explain things, so I ordered a copy. If only I'd read this before starting the course! It explains, in neat and concise language, many of the concepts with which I'd been having a large amount of trouble. It quickly shows how the balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement work together to explain what is happening in the business.

My only complaint is that this book doesn't really discuss journal entries. Perhaps that's intentional and might be one reason why this book works, but given how effective it is at simplifying everything else, I would love to have the benefit on Tracy's insight on this as well.

While this book would never replace a full accounting textbook, it should be required reading before ever touching any major text. By focusing on one single company and set of statements, you can concentrate on the concepts without having to try to understand a different set of numbers. This makes a world of difference when trying to understand how everything works together. Once these basic concepts are understood, more advanced details make more sense and things fall into place much, much faster.

Make no mistake: accounting is a different language that takes a long time to learn. Think of this book as a phrase book you use to learn the essentials before (if you must) tackling how the language works. No, you won't be able to tear apart the books and become a genius investor, but it'll turn on the lightbulb that will let you understand other books.

Some friends and I have been looking into buying a media company, and none of us have had any experience running a large corportation, or even much in the way of collegete education in financing. This book enabled us to run a high-level diagnostic on the financial health of our prospective business, and recognize certain significant challenges. Consequently, we have had second thoughts, and are proceeding with caution--or at least now we are in a position to make more informed desicions. Amazingly, we were able to find ways to improve the company's financial situation that the CFO has apperantly overlooked--and he's an MBA. ;-)

Everyone else raves but I really really didn't like this book. Here are my reasons:
- he rejects all herbal remedies because they have not been FDA approved. I admit there are problems with quality control and no you shouldn't ask the check out clerk for advice on natural remedies but there are other educated practitioners, even doctors, who can give advice on natural remedies.
- he is too quick to recommend a hysterectomy. While he says that you shouldn't have a D & C to try to identify excessive bleeding if you're going to have any surgery you might as well have a hysterectomy, forget myomectomy or any other less invasive surgery. I'm quite happy that I got rid of my fibroids with a myomectomy and still have my uterus - thank goodness my doctor didn't agree with this book.
- the book is 4 years old now and doesn't take into consideration the recent studies which show that HRT may not be the right way to go. I'd like to know how those studies affect his recommendation that all perimenopausal women take low dose birth control pills
- he seems to have only one answer for perimenopause and that's low dose birth control pills. I'm always suspicious of complicated problems that have only one answer.

I'm still looking for a book that I feel comfortable with.

I spent three years in misery suffering numerous symtpoms that couldn't be isolated by my doctors. Many times, I was told that these symptoms were essentially psychosomatic, or related to my weight, or stress from work. Then my husband found this book in a bookstore while on a business trip...just flipping through it, he immediately recognized the problems that I was experiencing. This book made such a difference for me. It helped me get through the final two years of my perimenopausal period and helped me learn how to manage the symptoms. If you think you might be approaching menopause now (or expect to be in the near future), I encourage you to get this book. It will make the next few years of your life much easier and give you peace of mind and body!

"Where's Spot" delightfully describes a search for Spot in hidden locations. The toddler lifts a flap to see if the dog is there. Great to read with young grandchildren, even the littlest ones, who loudly say "NO" when Spot is not found. You will hear,"Read it again," when the search is over.

I purchased this book 17 years ago for the first time when my daughter was born. I read it to her nightly and by her first birthday she knew the story completely, shaking her head no at each hiding place we'd look in for Spot. She enjoyed looking under the blanket, and in the closet trying to find Spot. It wasn't a book you just read, it was one where she got to pick up flaps to find other animals hiding throughout the house. It was interactive for her and gave us both great joy. It has become my favorite gift for new parents. I wish them the same joy my daughter and I shared reading this book.

My 2-year old son Connor received Where's Spot for Christmas (thanks, Aunt Judy!) and it was love at first sight. I didn't think anything would be able to knock One Naked Baby from atop his "most requested" list, but this charming little book did the trick.

The book focuses on mama dog Sally's search for her wayward pup Spot, who is late for supper. Each page finds Sally in a different part of the house, and contains a lift-up flap that hides a different animal. The text is kept to a minimum (usually it's just "Is he under the bed, etc.?" followed by "No"), but it has a rhythm that really drew my son's interest and had him eagerly turning pages in the hopes of eventually finding Spot. The illustrations add to the book's charm. There are plenty of bright colors and the animals are just irresistible. I'm a confirmed cynic, but even I can't help but grin when Sally and Spot finally settle down for their dinner. My son's enthusiastic "Good boy, Spot" only makes that smile wider.

As simple as the book may seem, it does include plenty of learning opportunities, from identifying the various animals and colors to the household items and shapes. The repeated use of the word "No" also provides a simple example of how letters are combined to make a word.

This fun little book gets my highest recommendation, and more importantly it get's Connor's "Again, again!" seal of approval. It's a great addition to any toddler's library, and would make a great baby shower gift as well.

I am confused looking at the reviews here. They are all for the Spot book. The book is very good too, but the video (here on this page) is also great. I have it for my niece and also for my daughter, and am buying another copy for a baby gift for someone.

This video is great for a baby's first cartoon/TV to watch. It is not too "busy" (or too long) for babies like other cartoons can be. I noticed my daughter *really* watching it and smiling and laughing at it around four months old. And she has enjoyed it ever since (and is now 3). It's cute and simple - perfect for babies and toddlers.

With my daughter interested in Spot, it gave me time to do some dishes or read the day's mail - uninterupted! I highly recommend *ALL* the Spot videos (although the longer ones, like the Christmas one, my daugter didn't get into as much until she was about two). "Where's Spot" and "Spot at the Farm" are her favorites. And she enjoys the books too.

Also - I recommend Kipper the Dog videos too. They are also the same simple shapes/characters and sceneries and stories, just like Spot. And Maisy Mouse videos and books. I never see any babies and toddlers who don't like Spot, Kipper, and Maisy. The Baby Mozart videos are also excellent. Kids are drawn to them. None of the above are wastes of money - and they enjoy them from babyhood into toddlerhood.

My two-month-old daughter got this book for Christmas. I thought she was too young for it. Boy, was I wrong! It is her absolute favorite!! Now at nine months old, she is lifting all the flaps and turning the pages. She gets so excited when I open this book. I cannot recommend it enough. The pictures are bright, the words repetitious, and the flaps sturdy -- a perfect combination for babies and toddlers! From now on, this is the book I am going to buy whenever I need to buy a baby or toddler gift. No one will be disappointed with Where's Spot!

Eliot Wigginton made his students immortal when he sent them into the southern mountains to interview and record the skills and crafts of the region.
This is the first one of a fantastic series that serves as a standard reference for mountain culture. If you are a writer that has any intention of either historical--frontier descriptions or including characters from the region this entire series should be on your shelf or in the local library. Reading them will give flavor to your work.
As a reader you can check to see if the hog killing scene from COLD MOUNTAIN is authentic. This is just one example, there are thousands of others.

This is a great book. I took it on a train trip recently and learned many new words. The people around me were intrigued so I had to give them a demonstration. We looked up many words and I found most of them. I think the others were probably too cryptic and we couldn't find something close to it. I found this book to be really helpful and look forward to using it more. It's giving me a head start on a more advanced education in ASL.

SO much information in one book!!!!!! I expected a book where I can simply look up a sign for a particular word, but this book offers so much more! The introduction alone tells you so much, and offers so much valuable info about the deaf community, types of hearing loss, origins of ASL, diagrams of the importance of hand location, shape, movement and orientation while signing, etc. etc.! This book is wonderful!! Each word offers written words on HOW to sign it, what it LOOKS like with diagrams, a quick explanation of the sign! Having studied ASL in college, and needing a refresher due to a hearing loss in my 19 month old son, this book has become so helpful! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Although this does not have every word I've attempted to look up, such as "steam", it is very useful as a reference for learning sign language. Very clear pictures and descriptions. Gives alternate meanings/uses for signs. This was recommended to me by a young woman who is studying sign language in college. I'm just teaching my baby some signs, but have enjoyed having one book to look up words in, and hope to keep learning more even when my daughter is older! A wonderful, quite way to communicate.

This is one of the best sign language dictionaries that I have ever seen. If the word you want to sign is not clear to you in the picture they show you, the instructions on signing the word you want makes it very clear. Also, when there is more than one way to sign a word, the definitions make it clear on which one you are to use.

I liked this book very much. Ibought this book after attending a special ASL mass at church. The celebrant was none other than Fr. Tom Mc Caughlin who is one of the sign models for this book. He is a terrific person and it was a privilege to meet him.

Great for church interpreters!

All of this lady's material is well thought out and easy to learn. This is a good book for church interpreters. Not only do you learn the signs for your religion, it shows you others as well. It also shows universal church religion signs. This is a must for anyone learning to interpret in a church setting!

I found this book to be helpful in my understanding of the female body.Given that I work with many female executives,I found this information to be very useful in designing my clients' workouts-especially the female body composition.
I liked the fact that the book showed me ways of getting the most out of the block of time I have for my clients. Most of them come in over lunch hour to train, the gyms are packed and there is no time to think and search. This book give me insights on how to save and maximize on the time that I have, and my clients really appreciate it.

Any beginner will be able to pick this book up and make immediate improvements in their fitness and health.

All areas are adressed and I'm happy to see a decent flexibility program covered as well.

As a professional trainer - it is always nice to see a good resource for the new exerciser.

Ladies, if you are just starting out, give this one a look.

If you want a book to give you lessons on what exercises are the best for you and a few meals to use this book may be for you. I found that you can get the same exercises listed in most videos and dvd's that denise austin has previously released. Also, the meals she gives you might work if you were just going to make 2-servings, they don't always work as well when increased for a family.

I was skeptical, but it really works!

I'm the first to admit that dieting makes me grouchy. Additionally, I am not a morning person, so the idea of getting up early and power-walking for 30 minutes four times a week seemed like Chinese water torture. But I had a formal dress to get into, and I needed drastic measures. So I read the book, and gradually incorporated the elements of the plan into my daily routine. I started with the meal plans. It was an eye-opener to see what a true portion should be, and I could see in my food journal all the things I was putting in my mouth every day. Next week, I started the walking. After a week I really started to enjoy it! I have two kids under 6, and I found I relished the quiet time to myself out on the roads in the morning. After that, I started the weight workouts. I saw results in the first month of following all of the advice. The motivational stuff seemed too perky in the beginning, but around week 6, when I started to get major chocolate cravings, I just kept thinking about what she said about halfway through the book. "Nothing tastes as good as being fit feels." Thirteen weeks later, I am 19 pounds thinner, and the formal I was trying to get into was a little loose! Everyone compliments me on how great I look. If you are really serious about getting into shape and fitting into your clothes, this is the book (and plan) for you.

Only good for an absolute beginner

If you know ANYTHING about eating properly already, don't purchase this book. This book is meant for beginners only. Denise must have been paid by the companies that produce the foods she suggests, because if you don't have access to the specific foods and types she recommends, there are no alternatives. The workout is also completely basic and rudimentary and focussed towards those that have NEVER worked out before, or possibly the elderly. I had high hopes for this book but was completely let down and actually returned it.
