Great for parents with young children!

I took a class with Wided Eyed Learning and found the class amazing! It was an utter joy to watch my infant communicate with her hands way before she could talk. After this class my child could tell me exactly what she wanted even before she could speak! Every time she wanted milk, she just used her hands and I knew exactly what she wanted! It simply breathtaking to watch. I bought these flash cards to supplement the class and to use at home. I would recommend these for ANY and ALL parents!!!! They are amazingly useful and well done, backed by the authority of highly-trained experts. I can't wait for Drs Anthony and Lindbert book to come out!

I received the "Signing Time! Flash Cards Set 1" as a gift for my baby girl and she can already sign 12 out of the 19 signs (plus many other signs for animals) and she's only 18 months old! I started signing with her at about 9 months old. Her first sign was "milk." I would recommend the Signing Time! Flash Cards set over the "Baby Signs for..." books, as HALF of those signs are INCORRECT, or as I put, "baby-ified." I would rather have my girl signing the correct signs in public. Who knows, maybe she will be able to comunicate with someone else besides me and her dad when she wants or sees something!

Worship is Food for the Soul

Worship is Food For The Soul

Worship, a book and enhanced CD combination by multi-award-winning singer, songwriter, author, and pastor Michael W. Smith, is a fresh collection of ideas and prayers enriched with down-to-earth thoughts and photographs about how Worship should be an integral part of an individual's life.
This book is a compliment to the platinum-selling Worship CD released on September 11, 2001, the historical day of the 21st century Pearl Harbor style attack on New York. An enhanced CD is included with this book and contains a first class recording of Breathe, a Michael W. Smith Video documenting the Worship tour, screensavers for both Windows and Macintosh, and computer background wallpapers...a nice finishing touch to a simple yet elegant and powerful book.
Smith, known by many as the "real deal" in his walk with the Lord, obviously has deep rooted passion for his relationship with the Creator and that shows through brilliantly in this book. He cites the example of being in concert and becoming aware "that something far more profound than a performance is going on...an incredible sense of worship will settle over the arena...At that moment, I realize that I am no longer the performer. I've joined with the audience, and together we are in awe of His presence." This writer has experienced this personally at a 1999 Florida concert by Smith and a review of this concert is online...
The writings in the Worship book provide a brief glimpse into Smith's personal walk with the Lord and relates several key scriptures. Many times it's easy for well-known people to get caught up in the arrogance of fame, but one thing unique about Smith is his dedication to the premise of living the life you preach about and that one should remember "it's not all about you."
I can easily see Worship, the book, as a permanent fixture on my living room coffee table, for everyone to pickup and browse. As Smith says toward the end of the book, "Worship sustains us. Our spirits need Worship like our bodies need food." Worship, the book, is truly Food for the Soul.

Wonderful new edition of a Burroughs classic

SIGNS AND SEASONS is arguably the best book ever written by the literary naturalist John Burroughs (1837-1921). Now it is made even better with an eloquent introduction, and extensive annotations, by Vassar's Jeff Walker, one of the premier Burroughs scholars of this generation. I also like the cut and size of this paperback - easy to fit into a day-pack for reading beyond the sound of highways.

Evslin Adds Water To Beautiful But Dry Tales
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.

As a child I quickly abandoned the dry mythology of my Judeo/Christian upbringing for the glowing, fabulous tales of the Greeks, Norse and Celts.As an adult I ran into this book at a 24 hour drug store, on a late night shopping binge, in the "cheapie bin".Thanks to this book I regained an interest in learning more about the religion of my family and the ideology and symbols of so much of the western world.And, possibly more importantly, was really entertained by the stories thanks to an exquisite storyteller. The writer's purpose, as stated in the intro, was to make the tales of the old testament breathe again.I know the Bible is the best selling book of all time and truly is a source of tremendous inspiration, but it is a difficult and often dull read.Mr. Evslin has definitely resusitated these familiar tales and given them the literary respect they deserve.I wish there had been a book like this one in my school library when I was small.

One of the Best

This short book is one of the best books written on film criticism. It is by no means comprehensive; however, Mr. Wollen chooses his focus carefully. The book is organized around three topics: the work and theory of Sergei Eisenstein, the auteur theory, and semiology. Mr. Wollen presents a clear, concise explication of each topic, augmented with many examples from films as well as other arts. Unlike many books on theory, Mr. Wollen's ideas are not obscure, and his language does not obfuscate the subject; his are, in fact, the clearest, most readable explanations of the basics of these theories that I have ever read. That is not to say the book is simplistic, however brief it may be. For the novice, this is a first-rate introduction to some of the basic principles of film criticism. For the authority, it's a pleasant read, a refresher on some classic ideas in film.

Excellent Resource for Symbols, Signs and Patterns
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-16
"Wherever we live, we are surrounded by symbols--if we choose to see them. We can go through life ignorant of this rich imagery, or we can open our eyes to the deeper truths inherent in much that surrounds us. For those interested in exploring the philosophical and the metaphysical, a world filled with symbols is infinitely rich and rewarding, leading us to a greater understanding of ourselves and bringing a fresh perspective to our lives." - From the book

From crosses to triangles, colors to flowers, symbols permeate art, myth, fairytales and movies. Most everyone knows that a heart pierced by an arrow symbolizes love, as well as that of a red rose. But have you ever considered how that association came to be made?

What about the pyramid on a dollar bill, "the finger", or the significance of the red string bracelet worn by Kabbalists? Or what does it mean that Bill Clinton "points" with his thumb when giving a speech or that kohl lined the eyes of Ancient Egyptian women? Where is the subtle symbol concealed in the FedEx emblem that earned it one of the top eight logos in modern design history?

You'll find the answers to these questions and many more in DK's book Signs & Symbols. At 352-pages with full color illustrations, many in shiny gold, this hardcover reference book is chock full of fascinating tidbits on the origin, lore and associations of thousands of signs and symbols.

Here are just some of topics covered in DK's Signs & Symbols:

* Fairytale motifs
* Religious and national symbols
* Body language, hobo signs, hand signals and symbolic gestures
* Weather, fire, air, water and earth
* Clothing, headwear, uniforms, body adornment and jewelry
* Modern phallic symbols (i.e. rockets, guns and guitars)
* Plants, herbs, flowers, food, trees and animals
* Buddhist mudras
* Emoticons, currency symbols and musical notation
* Fantastical beasts
* Art, theater, dance, masks and musical instruments
* Flags, crests and corporate logos
* Numerology, Magic Squares, Tarot Major Arcana, Palmistry and Runes
* Precious stones and metals
* Astrological, Mayan and Celtic glyphs
* Death, marriage, creation stories and rites of initiation
* Gematria, tetraktys and Sefirot of Kabbalah
* Monuments, architecture, home, gardens and mazes

Gorgeous as a coffee book or simply for leafing through, DK's Signs & Symbols offers magnificent eye-candy via lush photos, gold inking, illustrations, charts and accessible descriptions. As a reference book for writers, researchers, artists or the insanely curious, this book provides extraordinary insights into the patterns, archetypes and symbols found throughout history and modern surrounds.
