Signs Books

This is a short book, quick and easy to read. However, it contains wonderful characters--Peter, who is deaf, and Molly, who is hearing, an engrossing plot involving past lives and present terror, and interesting information about sign language and homeopathic medicine. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and highly recommend it.

The art work of this Swiss-born artist cannot help but bring abstract expressionism to mind at first glance. But on actually looking at any piece--whether painting, record album cover, print, or mixed media--one is instantly moved to realize they do not fall into this category. While Bucher's art works strive for a minimalism, in this they are not mute, remote representations of or paeans to ethereal ideas, absolutism, or purity as in abstract expressionism. The "breaks" of Bucher's art works such as broken or slanted lines, off-kilter shapes or ones which seem to start to disintegrate at an edge, or darker-toned spots suggest the rough, broken ground of the human condition. And the mixed media works containing letters and numbers somewhat reminiscent of Barbara Kruger or Ed Ruscha affirm Bucher is an artist of the day exploring the finer stylistic points and the mediums of contemporary art. The newly-published art book exemplifies the range of this artist's work that was exhibited at a 2002 exhibition at the U. of Brighton.

This book is awesome! My two year old is hearing impaired and I ordered most of the books in this series. I am impressed with the the way the author and illustrators have put this book together. It is the easiest book I have found to teach not only myself and my daughter sign, but also for my other school aged children to learn as well. I highly reccommend this book for anyone who wishes to learn sign.

This dictionary helps address an important issue in medical communication: Just because you or the interpreter knows the correct sign for a medical term doesn't mean your deaf patient does. This spiral bound book is designed to be laid flat on a table during a medical interview. It not only illustrates the proper signs, it also gives definitions of medical terms in plain English. In addition, it defines many terms which would need to be fingerspelled because they have no established signs. There are anatomical diagrams in the back to assist with explanations as well. It does not discuss grammar and doesn't address Deaf culture as it relates to medical care, so it is not intended as a stand-alone book for medical professionals or interpreting students.

There are many books on astrology that explain the zodiacal influence of each sign on the nature and tendencies of the human being. This one, however, dares to bring these influences into relation with the impulses of love and freedom being brought constantly by Christ. In fact, the whole zodiac is treated here as the dwelling and working place of cosmic beings who work upon the human being and his or her destiny. It brings the signs of the zodiac, the cosmic Christ, the hierarchies of spiritual beings, and the processes of reincarnation together in a very readable form.

My son hates reading because he is so bad at it but recently he was introduced to the Meg Parker Mysteries at summer school and loves them. It takes him a while to get through the stories but he enjoys it enough to actually try on his own without me or the teacher pushing him. I haven't read them myself but they must be good to get him so motivated.
