This book gives an excellent account of the physical examination. It is profusely illustrated with high-quality diagrams and photographs. The text is engaging and holds reader interest. While the title implies an approach from a surgeon's perspective, this work will be immensely useful to all those interested in the study and practice of the clinical bedside examination, irrespective of specialty.

Written by Jack Hoza (Director of the Sign Language Interpretation Program at the University of New Hampshire, Manchester) It's Not What You Sign, It's How Your Sign It: Politeness In American Sign Language is an analysis of linguistic strategies employed by ASL signers as compared to English speakers, with regard to the social variables of specific contexts. Chapters contrast requests in ASL and English, rejections in ASL and English, the interconnection between fluency and politeness, and much more. A scholarly text ideal for intermediate to advanced linguistic students and scholars, It's Not What You Sign, It's How You Sign It is a welcome contribution to language and communication studies shelves.

Solid and Faithful Exegesis of Old Testament Prophets
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-01-16
I am definitely in the biblicist fold, so I view critical writings with a view to gain what I can from them while retaining my skepticism of their general value. I need not have held such a view with this book. The scholarship is of the highest quality, thoroughly researched and well supported in the notes. Questions such as, "Did the prophets really act in the way described in the text?", are treated in a forthright, very objective manner. This approach is maintained throughout. In addition to being a worthy contribution in sign-acts study, Friebel's book can be used to illustrate how good exegesis can combine with reverence for the Scriptures to produce fresh insights into biblical teachings. I know it is expensive, but I thoroughly enjoyed the book and highly recommend it to serious students of the prophets.

True Paul

Review Date: 1999-12-07
Harrington is one of the most accessible writers of scripture who is also a true historical-critical biblical scholar. The Jesus of Mark's Gospel and the real Paul and his understanding of Jesus are revealed to the reader with clarity and verve. He also presents a cogent argument that Paul was not anti-woman at all, but was very much in line with the acceptance of women that Jesus held.

I have use this text for years in theology classes, with much success.

I wish it were still in print.

Firstly, it is a wonderful photography book. The large color Photos feature women from the many ethnic groups within Nepal, decked out in the most gorgous jewelry! Much attention is given to the jewelry of the Tibetan groups. The text is informative and easy to read. After a long day at the office, I can open this book and be magically transported to an exotic place. If you enjoy learning about Himalayan art and culture, this book is for you!

Deep, heady, well-argued summation of research on the topic
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-15
This is a great scholarly resource, full of quick synopses on important developments in the last few decades of John Dee research. Scholarship on Western Esotericism has reached a climax in this text, which provides a workable model on how to understand Dee's occultism properly in the context of the culture, politics, science, and theology of his day. A rich and nuanced picture of Dee emerges, and the traitorous reputation of a certain notorious nearby character receives a welcome deconstruction. Towards the end there is a valuable look at Causabon's anti-magical motivation for publishing Dee's scrupulous notes. The book is especially valuable for providing an eastern-European point of view, and is hip to the useful critiques in post-structuralist history.

Both academics and occultists will find this book most enjoyable, though challenging and dense. Great gift for the magician/intellectual who has everything, essential for libraries and bookshelves dealing with Renaissance Magic and the Elizabethan Age.

Brings the archetypal processes of the signs alive
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 1999-05-24
As a beginning student of Astrology I have found this book invaluable. It explains the basics of the astrological signs in terms of their archetypal processes. Roger Woolger, Jungian Analyst says it far better than me --"A wise, enchanting and enriching book. Alice O. Howell makes the deeper meaning of the astrological archetypes alive and relevant as no one else can. Jung would have loved it!" If you want to understand the process of the signs this is the book.
