For those of us teaching literacy through the Braille medium to students in the early grades of public schools, this book is hotter than hot! Anna Swenson has clearly done her hours in classrooms. She explains the approaches to literacy which regular educators take, then she suggests logical and practical accommodations for Braille students. Examples from student portfolios are abundant. Bulleted suggestions are straightforward. Cross references are current and pertinent. End-of-the-book references are in no way redundant with what we already have in our growing literature. Thank you, Anna. I don't know how I've managed without "Beginning with Braille!"

A must for families of Deaf children

I read this book as an assignment for an American Sign Language course I was taking at the local community college. I expected a dull, boring read and was very surprised. Lorraine Fletchers' account of her child's first few years is heart wrenching and (at the same time) triumphant. A must read for hearing parents of Deaf children.

First book written concerning interpreters and education
Helpful Votes: 30 out of 30 total.
Review Date: 1999-09-24
Ms. Seal has put together a valid and worthy book about the need for changes in how interpreters are trained who will be interpreting in education environments. With the push for inclusion and placement of deaf and hard-of-hearing children in public schools, it is more than about time that someone wrote concerning the need for more intensive training of interpreters to keep up with the knowledge base and subjects that are required in school. In a situation where information is received non-directly from the teacher, if the interpreter doesn't know or understand the subject, faulty information is given to the student. Yet when the student makes the mistakes on testing because of misinformation, it is they who must pay the price. This is not a funny subject, but since I've been through college with a variety of interpreters with different abilities, I understand of what Ms. Seal speaks. In a neuroscience medical class, an interpreter who was hired because he was cheap and had no certification, misinterpreted the medical term 'olfactory' as 'old factory'. That was bad enough for an adult, but to give that type of information to children on which to base continued learning would be a crime. This book should be read by all those in special education and those training interpreters throughout the U.S.--it should definitely be required reading, and I plan to use it in future teaching and recommendations to science teachers through out the U.S. Karen Sadler University of Pittsburgh

Every Subaru owner should have this thing. The only thing I don't like is that its thin and a little translucent, not as thick as it would seem. And it took 2 weeks to get to me. Other than that I love it!

Challenging and Enjoyable on Many Levels

Review Date: 2008-01-17
A blend of history and memoir, Blood Done Sign My Name is a thoroughly enjoyable, challenging, and informative book. Author Timothy Tyson (currently a history prof in Madison, Wisconsin) grew up in North Carolina, son of a preacher and a teacher. In 1970 he was a ten-year-old living in Oxford NC, a typical segregated Southern town planning (reluctantly) to integrate its schools during the coming autumn. In May the father and brothers of one of his neighborhood pals murdered a young black veteran in broad daylight. This murder sparked a violent upheaval in the town and eventually led (among other things) to Tyson's liberal white father being driven out of the town. The family moved to Wilmington NC just in time for Timothy to participate in the racial integration of the schools there and for his father to witness the events leading to the incarceration of the Wilmington Ten. (Ben Chavis, the best-known member of the Ten, had been a leader of the protests in Oxford as well.) As an adult, Tyson considered this year a turning point in his life. In this book, he explores his own family's history, the murder and its aftermath, the civil rights movement, and the legacy of racism in contemporary America. By turns funny, moving, charming, enlightening, and scathing, it is a book filled with colorful people ("...the Lord works through deeply flawed people," Tyler writes, "since he made so few of the other kind.") and powerful events. Highly recommended.

I work with a preschool program for deaf and hard of hearing children. We are constantly searching for new products to help preschoolers with hearing loss develop language and communication skills. This book is perfect for our need! Blue is a delightful and educational dog that most preschoolers have seen at some time on televison or on videotape. So the content of the book quickly captures their attention because Blue and Steve are learning sign language! The book is repetitive and its contents are about experiences that preschoolers can identify with! Our preschoolers (and their parents) are thrilled that sign language pictures are above the printed words. The book also contains a sticker section which the child uses to help solve Blue's clues! It is in a coloring book format so the child can have fun while improving his motor skills. What a great way to get deaf and hard of hearing children interested in language and in learning!

Finally, A Valuable Text Available to Astrologers
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-15
This valuable 1029 C.E. Arabic text was first translated by R. Ramsay Wright and published in 1934. For the most part this text hasn't been available to astrologers since the translation was typewritten and limited to a print run of 100 copies. Only those fortunate enough to find a copy in a university library had access to the translation.

This is all changed with the Astrology Classics edition of Al Biruni. David Roell of Astrology Classics has taken the astrological part of the lengthy translation and typeset it in a modern easy-to-read font with many clearly set tables, and published it in a a very affordable paperback edition.

For astrologers perhaps the most interesting notations in the text are the comparisons between the Arabic and Hindu views of astrological principles. This is invaluable in tracing the movement from Hellenistic astrology to India to the later Arabic writers.

My only complaint about this edition is that the original translation contained some interesting and pertinent information on the lunar mansions which is not included here. The lunar mansion material was located in an astronomical section of the text apart from the core astrological concepts, and perhaps that's why it was missed. Perhaps this material will be included in a later Astrology Classics edition of Al Biruni.

This edition of Al Biruni is a must purchase for any astrologer who wants to have a complete historical picture of the development of astrology up to and through the Arabic period. Plus there are many descriptions of techniques pertinent to modern astrological practice. For the low price there's no reason all astrologers shouldn't have this book in their library.

If you are looking for a Book of Mormon study guide, look no further. Ridges includes the actual text of the Book of Mormon interlaced with commentary, cross references (many fully reprinted), and applicable excerpts from general authorities past and present. Ridges writing style is readable and engaging. He can make the scriptures come alive for you like never before. I am now reading this particular volume for the second time. There was so much good information to absorb, once was just not enough.

superbe, best there is for medical students! A MUST!

Awesome, this is the best examination book for surgical patients I know of. It is written for the medicalstudent and is almost perfect! supplement it with "cope's early diagnosis of the acute abdomen". If you can get your hands on "Bailey's symptoms and signs in surgery" you might have a look at it too. It is a little more detailed but also 20 years old and not printted anymore! (do not buy the newest version, only the title remains the same!)

You will be a better student for having read and digested this book!
