A Real Helper!

Astrology books are great at pointing out the negative characteristics of the different star (sun) signs, but don't offer much advice for dealing with them. As an example, most astrology books tell us that Cancer is "needy." We're given that information and then moved on to another characteristic. Lorna MacKinnon is able to help us out. She offers practical advice on how to deal with and overcome our star sign's negative traits. To continue the example, she includes an exercise in the Cancer chapter on "Getting Your Needs Met." It's not just a "how to." It's a real way of getting you to size up your needs and expectations (applicable to more than just Cancerians). There are many exercises of this sort for each of the signs. She also offers "Coach's Tips" and "Tools for Making a Difference" throughout. It is chockfull of incrediblly insightful guidance. The book is excellent. I read it cover to cover and would recommend it highly to anyone. Even people who have never studied astrology will find it very informative and thought provoking. It should be required reading for all beginning students of astrology. The more advanced student will do well to add Ms. MacKinnon's advice and experience to their toolbox. This is top shelf material.

Insightful & Informative

This book was excellent. I started by reading my own star sign to see if I felt the information was accurate or just nonsense. Surprisingly, the information presented about my star sign (and all the others) is insightful, meaningful, and purposeful. As the other reviewer stated, many astrology books focus on the negative (or even the positive) aspects of a sign, but do not really show you how to do anything with the information. But, MacKinnon does; this really is like having a coach on-hand. Through exercises designed to increase your awareness of your own goals, values, etc., she not only addresses the positives and negatives of each sign, but offers practical solutions for helping yourself get through trouble points. She devotes a generous 12-15 pages per sign (sometimes more) and the information is really valuable, whether you are interested in astrology or not. Most of the exercises (and there are about 5 per sign, so 60ish total) can be done by anyone, not just those born under the star sign the exercise falls under. This is definitely a book I'm going to keep on my shelf and I'd 100% recommend it.

Thinking in pictures
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2004-08-08
The author investigates imagery in literature, religion and art, making the connection to universal themes in the human psyche. The book lists the idea, quality or state symbolised and then discusses all the major imagery used to represent it under the topic. Important symbols with multiple meanings therefore appear under various different topic headings, whilst related topics are sometimes grouped together.

The book provides an overview of the various imagery used by different cultures that stand for concepts like happiness, joy, wisdom, goodness, evil, truth justice, freedom and salvation amongst others. The author claims that traditional imagery as a whole represents a relatively small spectrum of emotions and ideas that were seen as the keystones of civilisation, in order to emphasize the positive over the negative. The book includes many cross-references, an index and plenty of striking monotone and full colour illustrations.

Clever and witty, the female protagonist is one to watch.

The book which borders on suspense since the main character, Ali, is the hunted and not the one in pursuit is clever in the plot. Ali at first is a bit cool, but you start rooting for her as she tries to fulfill her agenda. A great book for a escapist weekend or airplane flight.

Splendidly sorrowful and acerbic!!!!!

Man! Although I am woman, I feel the depth of sorrow that the author has expressed in his writing. He sure seems like one hurtin' puppy but in the end it looks like he's gonna pull though. 60 Signs is a triumph of the soul. It reads like a journey through the mind of a human being who is rebelling against his station in life. He presents strong arguments for the validity and utility of nihilistic ideals but expresses the joy and wonder of finding true love. True happiness, although elusive, can be discovered only through hard work and persistence. This is the message from one Mr. Newman.

This is one of those books that my wife checked out of the library just to scan. Soon, she began to want to photocopy one neat suggestion to "post" for herself, then another, and finally she admitted that she really wish she had ALL the pages, so here I am just ordering the book for her. She loves it and reads the "actions" out loud to me. I have to admit that I have not read the book, but she's read it, and re-read it, and is constantly telling me and other people about it, so it must be GOOD! I wouldn't be surprised if she's not getting me into the "Age Erasers for Men" just so I can look and feel as young as she's beginning to feel and look.

Out the mainstream
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

Seven times, maybe eight, diferent cultures invented writing, but the alphabet was created just once. Most scholars say it derives from egyptian hieroglyfics. This book, on the contrary, holds that the letters of the Latin alphabet we use today come from the old Luna Zodiac, "which long antedate the twelve signs of the ecliptic or Solar Zodiac".

It compares the letters with their possible origen in hieroglyfics, old chinese, astronomical signs, old semitic... making a great effort in showing graphs in a modestly printed book, as for 1953.

Scholarly, great reading if you are interested in alphabet history.

A magnificent look at history of typography
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2003-08-21
This is not a book on modern typography, or on modern ad campaigns; it is a wonderful review on the use of typography through the first 50 years of the 20th century.
Best of all is that the book itself has a beautiful design and concept, as if it were a book from that era: rounded corners, washed away colours... Therefore, in brief, it is more a book to look at, admire, and enjoy, than a book to work with and get ideas from on a usual basis, as it would happen with other kinds of publications. Me, as a lover of typography, strongly recommend it.
