Although this book is miniature it is packed with information about your sun-sign. The feature of this book I enjoyed most was that it paired your sign with each of the other eleven signs (including itself; Taurus and Taurus). For example Taurus and Leo. It then described the chances of a relationship between the two. Another feature I enjoyed was the different chapters about Taurus. Such as your talents and careers, body and mind, and Taurus at a glance. I know that you will enjoy this small book as much as I have.

A fantastically decorated, charming volume.

This pint-sized book about the Taurus birth sign exceptionally covers in a concise, informative and very pleasurable to read style, all the basic information any astrology follower would enjoy having around in a single, beautifully illustrated, compact volume, more than suited to be carried around everywhere.
In merely eighty pages, it offers a fascinating look at many of the qualities and traits of the Taurus personality as studied by astrology and their relationship to almost every aspect of daily life, including:
*The Sign of the Bull
*Character and Personality
*Signs and Symbols
*Health and Fitness
*Home and Family
*Careers and Goals
*Pastimes and Play
*Love among the Signs
As a bonus, it also contains a brief introduction to the history of Astrology.
This is a fun read for everyone.

I stepped off the edge of normal thinking and rose to new heights of awareness. I have appreciated Mr. Eco as an author of great books, but I see him now as Dr. Eco, the man who makes words speak new meaning. When I listen to people, friends, family, (yes and God forgive me, TV talking heads) I no longer hear what they say, I see they are trying to express ideas with words they do not control. I just wish I could control them, the words, as Dr. Eco does. An excellent read, and excellant study and a great way to build your mind. Thank you Dr. Eco, mille gracie, mille, mille gracie.

Symbols: Development of a Methodology of Communication
Helpful Votes: 77 out of 77 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-27
The Italian Umberto Eco is a towering figure. A literary critic, novelist, and semiotician (studying symbols and symbol systems), he gained international recognition with "The Name of the Rose" (1980) in which he brought the study of semiotics to fiction. In this book, "Theory of Semiotics", he makes his contribution to the theoretical study of signs encompassing all cultural phenomena. His focus is on the development of a methodology of communication.

Like Roland Barthes, Eco starts from the foundations of semiotics in Saussure (Course in General Linguistics: who developed the idea of sign-systems and the sign/signified distinction, as well as the distinction between langue/parole - language and speech) and Claude Levi-Strauss (Structural Anthropology). Yet Eco surpasses this tradition to move into new territory, recognizing the limits to structuralism and Saussure's ideas. He recognizes, for example, that meaning is not merely governed by structure, but also interactively constructed by the reader/interpreter, who often inserts or fills-in missing meaning to construct a coherent picture.

Those interested in an introductory work to this fascinating field should be pointed to Eco's work "Semiotics and the Philosophy of Language" which is easier to start with.

An excellent resource for communicating with your infant
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 16 total.

This book is ideal for parents of infants who want to enchance the ability to communicate precisely with their child before the child is able to vocalize. It contains simple and precise intstructions for teaching your child signs that they can use as early as 9 months old. It is basic enough for anyone -- you don't need experience with signing. The justification is clearly detailed, yet fun to read. The instructions for signs are clear as well. I found it much better than the similar book, "Baby Signs" in both content and instructions for making signs. If you or someone you know is interested in signing with their hearing child, this is the book for you!

It works miracles!

I bought this book when my daughter was 9 months old and started using it right away. She picked up the signs incredibly quickly and the amount of whining and pointing dramatically decreased. She's now 19 months and talks and only has a couple of signs she still uses, but at her age she's now asking to go "potty" on the toilet because we've been using the sign for 9 months to identify when she's obviously going in her diaper. Amazing. Buy this book if you have a baby and you will be so pleased!

Leslie Rebecca Bloom does an excellent job of articulating how feminist poststructuralism can be a useful theoretical lens for doing research. Her text is an excellent example of praxis, practice informed by theory. She has the courage to interrogate her methodology as she is in the moment of conducting her research by consistently being reflective of her actions and analyzing the possiblities and limitations of narrative inquiry and the relationships involved in research.

Discussing violence as a symptom of underlying cultural problems, Dr. Karras provides us with eight specific indicators of potential violent acts by young people. She also provides 77 practical, pre-emptive suggestions of what concerned people can do immediately to take command as primary caregiver to the young. In my 36 years in the classroom, and raising four children, I have never read anything to compare with the clarity of these suggestions. Dr. Karras offers them to complement love and concern, with the perspective of an adult taking charge of raising a responsible and sensitive human, rather than handing this task to violence-glamorizing media.

Wonderful!

Review Date: 2008-07-03
Visible Signs is a wonderful, oceanic sweep through several months in the lives of ten or eleven women in post-1980s Antigua, Guatemala. The women are indigenous, Guatemalan Spanish descendants, and short and long term expatriates from North America and France. They struggle and clash, work and learn with one another; they share their thoughts, cultures and energies, traumas, fears and loves. The stories include the struggle for survival and independence of Mikela and Natividad, two young orphan sisters, and the competing efforts of the other women to help them. Lourdes has recently come from the U.S. to reinvigorate her waning artistic spirit after her marriage reached an impasse. Gwen, Lourdes step-daughter and significant challenge, visits and engages immediately in the circle of women. Ginny is a priest who has come to recover her spirit after she was ingloriously and traumatically expelled from her congregation. Wilma, who lost her son in the civil war, works as cook, housekeeper, day planner, and anchor for insecure and controlling matriarch, Rosemary, who immigrated years ago with her now-deceased second husband and love of her life. The reader is taken effortlessly and masterfully back and forth through time, and shares in the thoughts, conversations, and activities of the many characters. In real time, we witness birth and death. We are taken into many churches; we visit new age healers; we participate in local customs during Easter. We hear the voices (often unwelcome) that speak in the minds of most of the characters. Above all, this is a vibrant, loving story about spirit and the good that comes from group effort to draw on spirit in the midst of conflict. Spirit dissolves and resolves struggles. Visible Signs is masterfully written, entertaining and insightful. It's wonderful.

A heartwarming story.

A ten year old girl must save herself and her twelve year old pregnant sister in Visible Signs, a conflict-filled novel set in Guatemala. The two native girls meet with a group of older American women who bring their own conflicts to the table and the new circle of friends seek aid from one another in this touching and spiritual story of cultural gaps closed to celebrate human nature. Deftly written and executed, "Visible Signs" is highly recommended to women's fiction shelves and for anyone who seeks a heartwarming story.

Good old fashioned romance, with clean language and no dirt in the book. A nice change comparing to all the trash you read these days in the rest of the new novels. I'd recommend it in a heart-beat.

"Vital Signs: A Mission of the Heart" is the first published work from Janet Bergera, and quite frankly, my heart and soul are waiting for more of her works. The characters in this novel vividly come to life and are able to display a true passion for each other, without the author resorting to "trashy" content. Miss Bergera, if you read this review, thank you for touching my heart, and please give us more. A talent like yours shouldn't be kept from the world

Another beautiful collection from Walker Evans, showing his greatest photos of billboards, movie posters, newspaper headlines, theater marquees, graffiti, street signs, hand-painted shop frotns, covering 1920-1975. You will discover variety of ways to interpret the different layers of meanings from his photos with striking impression. It provides an excellent documentary about American culture. Walker Evans also collected and exhibited signs, sometimes next to his photographs, which brings his work into another level. From letters to graphics, from graphics to signs, sometimes people is becoming helpless under the mass media. Highly recommended for graphics / black and white fans.

Walker Evans SIGNS are unique and wonderful. These images glow in there black and white surroundings. Some of the images are simple and delicate and other are busy and loud...a great mixure.Codrescu's essays give you a delightful walk through of Evans life.Andrei has an original insight... description of these signs from our past. There is excitment in these essays...energy in which Evans must have had as he photographed these images. As you read on you will see Evans attraction to signs. I also enjoyed the layout of the book. The images have room to breath and the text is perfect. I was very happy to add this book with my collection of photography books.
