I do not in general write reviews of books I have not yet read. I am writing this review because this is a book I so much look forward to reading.
It is written by Rabbi Abraham Feldbin who is a true mensch, a kind and good human being, a wonderful teacher of Judaism. It has been privilege to meet him several times in his visits to Jerusalem . Both in conversation and in hearing his ' Divrei Torah' I have learned much. He has immense experience and very great wisdom.
I have no doubt this book will be a highly enjoyable and inspiring one to read.

Abraham Isaac Feldbin, the author of Reflections Are Not Shadows, is my grandfather. This book he has put together, is the most precious gift he could ever have given to us, his family. This is not a book, that only Jews will enjoy. This is a book, that human beings in general, will enjoy. It's very interesting, to read the opinions and points of view, of such a phenomenal, worldly man, rabbi, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, etc, who has had so many extraordinary experiences, throughout his lifetime.
My grandfather published this book, at his own expense. All proceeds and/or donations will go to the beautiful Congregation Moreshet Avraham, in East Talpiot, Jerusalem.
Please consider, not only purchasing this book, but also, creating such a legacy, for your loved ones.

I whole heartedly agree with the above reviewer! Have a tissue nearby, I sat down and read half the book in one sitting. It was a a beautifully written, therapeutic, enlightening read that I would venture to say all children of LDS divorce should have this as required reading. It made me deal with deep feelings I didn't know I had. The writer seems to take her experience and make it parallel to your own somehow. It was like it was reading a book written by me, for me, from a higher vantage point later in my life. I am a returning patron of this book -- buying copies today for friends of similar family backgrounds. If the author ever reads this review-- might a say a big thank you from all of us whove made better sense of our grief in the context of the gospel, because of your literary talent and experience.

I found that this book really stated what I felt about my own family and dealing with divorce. The author shares with you her experience of divorce and shares some things she did to get her through this hard time. She has also stated many wonderful, helpful ideas about how she dealt with divorce better. You may want to have a tissue near by because this book will dig deep inside you.

As someone who wasn't previously interested in the physical strategies of Captain Moroni's war with the Lamanites, reading this book by John Bytheway's helped me develop a great appreciation for the spiritual strategies, as well as the physical, in the war for the Nephites' continued freedom. I believe that all aspects focused on in "Righteous Warriors" are helpful to Book of Mormon enthusiasts and survivors of "the world" everywhere.

Surprisingly enlightening!

I loved this book! John Bytheway is great at incorporating humor with the spiritual to keep you interested all the way through. He looks deeper and helps you to see that the war chapters of The Book of Mormon are not just stories but that they are true and teach important helps for our day. I would recommend this book to anyone!

Thoughts on Rivers of Shadow, Rivers of Sun by Norm Zeigler

People who fish, and in particular fly fish, will like and understand this book as well as those who travel, appreciate architecture and history, enjoy good food and drink as well as those who enjoy an adventure and being with nature. I enjoyed this book for something else - the kind, compassionate and unadorned truth from this very philosophical of a writer. His fishing may take place in fairly shallow waters but his observations of the human plight take place in the deepest fathoms of life.

Fishing becomes a metaphor for all of us who are constantly casting about, trying to lure those elusive rainbows to us. When successful we do as Norm does, we often release them and they are gone unknowest from us forever; others we keep and digest.

Fishing in this book is like other sports - baseball, basketball, football; or skiing, ping pong, or tennis. It is about finding a sense of balance and knowing the direction you are casting your lure, your pitch, the ball, the swing, the rhythm. And the streams the author fishes in are not only the waters of fish but the waters of life where the bottom may be sandy and gravel-like and fairly steadying, or moss slick rocks that can that too quickly remind us all of our own mortality; or easier in the shallows of life than in the depths of it, and, as happened to the author, sometime we are overwhelmed by the rapids in life and go feet up and risk drowning in the real and symbolic waters. Fishing as a sport is also reflective of the common ingredient in other athletic activities that one must have in order to be successful - whether in fishing or in life - endurance. It is not just setting the hook and reeling it in. It is about access and exhaustion in getting there, casting until you are too tired to cast again - and then casting again. Endurance begets suffering and the author suffers the frigid cold until his hands no longer work properly and he suffers the realization of lost hope when no matter what exertion and expertise he has - there are no fish and there will not be any fish for that day. Tomorrow, and tomorrow, creep in the hope of better days.

This Book is an excellent book. Not only is it fun to read but it is imformative too. This book was set during world war one and the holocaust. This book is about a young girl and her life over a long period of time. It had a very clever plot and kept me interested the whole way through the book. This book is geared for people between the ages of 12-15. Buy this book and you won't be sorry.

Sacred Shadows is an exiting and touching book. It shows what it was like for a German Jew to live in Poland during the times of Hitler. Lena, a teenaged girl who helps her mother in the shoe store. Sala, a friend from school, and Lena become very good friends, but later Sala freezes to death near a lake after a cold night in Lena's basement. Further into the story Lena falls in love and goes to another country with him because it's too hard to be a Jew in Poland. This is a great book, I think that everyone should read it!

Spirited account of the LDS church in Africa
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-02-19
This book is a moving, sometimes funny, sometimes heart-breaking account of Elder Pace's service among the African saints. It begins with his service during the terrible famine in Ethiopia in the 1980's and continues until his release from his assignment as a member of the Quorum of the Seventy assigned to the Africa West Area.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a fascinating story. It sure made me appreciate the great blessings I enjoy as a member of the church living in the United States. The first chapter is mostly quotes about the plan of the gospel, and I think, slows the book down. These would have been better placed at the end.

The book includes many of Elder Pace's talks, including his address in General Conference of April 2000. The pictures are wonderful. My favorite was the picture of Sister Pace talking to a woman who was carrying a sewing machine on her head! Now, that's ingenuous. One that missionaries, families, and those curious about the LDS church would enjoy.

Best LDS Church Book in Years
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-21
Safe Journey is the best LDS Church book in years. But first, a word on "LDS Church Books". Books are of the utmost importance in Mormon culture and follow a strict and complex hierarchy. Of first rank are the scriptures--Bible, Book of Mormon, Doctrine & Covenants and Pearl of Great Price. These works are considered the "standard works" and serve as the measure of the orthodoxy of any other work. The next level are works written at the express direction of Church leadership, such as Talmage's "Jesus the Christ" or which remain published exclusively by the Church, such as President Kimball's "Miracle of Forgiveness". After these are works of General Authorities, which traditionally bear a disclaimer stating that any such book is entirely the responsibility of its author rather than a statement of Church doctrine. Many excellent and worthy books are written by gospel historians, BYU Professors, Church Education personnel and others, but works by General Authorities have an implicit authority that derives from the mandate of their authors to be Special Witnesses of Christ.

The largest subset of General Authority books are the "teachings" volumes, which generally summarize sermons and conference addresses. Next you have volumes of exegesis and commentary concerning the standard works and various doctrines--most notable of which are those by Elder McConkie and Elder Maxwell, different styles, same message. A fascinating and increasingly popular style are what I call Church Procedurals: primarily works such as those by Elder Gibbons which, though ostensibly biographies of Church Presidents, provide the best publicly-available record of the operation of the Church at the highest levels. Another example would be "Pure Religion" by Glen L. Rudd. But the rarest and my personal favorites are the autobiographical works. (Elder Maxwell's "Moving in His Majesty and Power" falls squarely in this category.)

Elder Pace manages in "Safe Journey" to hit the high points of every subcategory. It is a sound and instructive blend of doctrine, Church History, procedure and biography. And, despite its depth, it is a fun read. We forget sometimes that the restoration is still happening--Elder Pace manages to reveal the frustration of leading the enthusiastic new African saints without in any fashion detracting from the Spirit. He demonstrates that it the testimony of Jesus and His modern prophets that is truly essential to the work--all else is merely an appendage of lesser importance. This work is also all the more powerful because it faithfully describes the Lord's process of bringing his blessings to a new people--it is primarily the story of the building of the Ghana temple.

Elder Pace succeeds in telling an honest and complete story that is all the more fascinating for its portrayal of the many roadblocks both encountered and overcome in his administration of the Church in West Africa. Some discouraging moments are shared for the purpose of highlighting the joy that follows when things are put right--which doesn't necessary happen on Elder Pace's schedule. Elder Pace does not hestitate to share personal struggles and the value of this book lies in its author's willingness to share the lessons he has learned from his experiences in Africa.

Very pleasurable visually with bright colors and stunning use of white to indicate light. I can never seem to pull this off and look forward to trying to recreate some of the paintings to see if I can achieve success.

I received this handwritten note from Clive Cussler, author of the popular Dirk Pitt books.

Dear Ned,

I read September Shadows and admire your work. I was especially impressed with the way it flowed. The short chapters made it fly.

Here's to Deke Gannon and Dirk Pitt. Long may they wave.

Two long years since Deke Gannon appeared in Sound of Shadows and that's too long. September Shadows is a gripping account of post 9/11 efforts by Deke and Cross to find and cancel terrorist efforts to murder America's President. A techno-thriller filled with action and plot twists with a little romance in the mix. Hope we don't have to wait another two years to follow Deke in a new adventure.

First Class Act: Shadow of a Giant Mistaken for Invisible

Review Date: 2002-02-21
Ralph Ellison, the musician and the author of the extrememly well-conceieved and paced novel "Invisible Man" (a rare instance wherein the plotting falls perfectly in sync with the decsriptive; falling, as with the eloquence and precision of the inernal mechanics into the ornate casing of a timepiece; a statement as much as a parody concering perceptions), here provides many surprises, all attesting to the immensity of his talents and array of his interests: There are articles on Jazz, BeBop, and some of best first-hand renderings upon the scene as it had developed at a period between literal non-accepatnce to a greater receptability; Eliot, as in the author's pechant and interest for the motifs, messages and stylistic of "The Wasteland"; Faulkner and the South; Historic American literary recurrances involving language, rythmic and individual, and some very valuable and erudite selections whose range -both autobiographic and literary- are as indispensable as they are of true merit and eloquence. This edition (and it is a shame there had not been more!), legitimizes the talents and perspectives of a gifted author whose legacy -although saddly never fully realized- shall always stand above any field of the discordant (as in the Wasteland), ringing more true than any pause between a jazz riff's sometimes-disquieting
strains.

Love your series!

Hello! I must say that I love your series. The first day my dad came back, he gave me the books to read. And from that very second I started to read them. Your words seem so real that more than twice I actually thought that I was the character in the book, fighting the monsters. I love fiction books and I can read them 24/7. Your series were the best books I ever read.(I'm not just saying that).

And your illustrating, don't even get me started. I've been trying to draw like you draw ever since I was old enough to hold a pencil. I'm not even sure if I made any progress.

One thing that I want to know is will Jax marry Marina? And who is The One? Is it a baby? And will the Chitin ever return to their regular selves? Please could you send a summary of what will happen in the next few books? I am very anxious to know the next adventures of the characters.

Gripping adventure series

Apart from reading everything remotely related to Harry Potter, my teenage nephew has never picked up any other book that was not required reading at school. His passion is his Playstation and nothing else. It was therefore quite a surprise when I saw him devouring Book One of The Shadow Beasts series. Curiosity got the better of me and I picked it up too and what a pleasant surprise it was!

Gregory Janicke has a way of gripping the reader from start to finish. I devoured Book One "The Dark Mystery of The Shadow Beasts" in one afternoon and was very soon looking out for Book Two "Attack of The Shadow Beast". Both books were fast paced and full of action, but it was Book Two that really developed the characters and creatures and by the end of it I felt that I knew them all as well as I did Harry, Ron and Hermione. Janicke takes the reader through Planet Dulunae like on some magical ride leaving you begging for more.

A great read for pre-teens, teens and adults that never grow up. Full of good values and teamwork, the characters and creatures of Shadow Beasts fight all odds and forces of evil in the spirit of other great stories like Harry Potter, Star Wars and maybe even Lord of The Rings. You can bet my nephew and I will keep a lookout for Book Three "The Conquering Beasts".
