This is one of my all time favorite religious books. I will never forget how Wilcox compares the temple ceremonies to a four act play.

This book so clearly explains how to step back and really experience the peace of attending the temple. S. Michael Wilcox preserves the sacredness of the experience. His stories and insights are appropriate and thought provoking. It is a wonderful book for anyone who holds a recomend or desires to understand the personal imporance to any faithful Latter-day Saint the temple experience holds.

I'm not sure how long I've had this book. I'm not even sure how it came to be in my possession. But it is the most meaningful book I have on the purposes of the temple and how to gain more from temple ordinances. Brother Wilcox has assembled a thorough collection of quotes and personal anecdotes that bring his points home in such an understandable and motivating way. Particularly interesting to me were two items: first, the stories of his ancestors and his portrayal of their feelings at having their names found so their temple work could be completed; and second, the inspiring collection of quotes from modern prophets and apostles regarding the protection to be found through temple work. We worry so much today about how to keep our families safe, and think there must be some complicated answer. The actual answer is quite simple--attend the temple more often, and bring more of the power of our Savior into our lives.

I enjoyed Mr. DeHart's book very much. He twists his tale around popular fantasy subjects, new spec-fic and Seattle WA. He builds a tense novel with a little bit borrowed and a little bit new; I really appreciate how he was able to take a classic children's tale and make it older and darker. His Lost Boys live in a world that slowly creeps into the one we know - opening up clash between those that live in the light and those that have been banished to the shadows. Overall this was a fun and engaging read.

This book is a remarkable interweaving of classic and hypermodern. It is a supernatural mystery thriller. It has elements of fable and fantasy, complex multi-dimensional characters with psychological and spiritual problems that the reader really comes to know and care about, and a variety of amazing non-human and ex-human players that play significant roles in the story: angels, demons, genies, and a few mysteries. The world of Peter Pan is explained as a centuries-old struggle of evil spirits seeking to gain access to the physical world by swapping places with children who then become lost boys, boys who have been replaced, half in our world and half in another. The damaged, sinning, yet redeemable humans who finally discover and resist this evil are an amazing group. The narrative pace is mostly fast and switches perspective frequently among chararacters. The climactic final battle is amazing. Good triumphs, but not without cost and tears. I hope to read more of this author in the future.

Anne James Valades is one of the most evocative novelists I've read in a long time. Her prose is gorgeous. Her stories and characters real, even though she uses the mystical element to great effect. In the Shadow of the Amates is sweet, sad and historically fascinating. If you know anyone who is going to Mexico for the first or umpteenth time, they'll love this book.

The book left me hungry for her next novel.

Anne Valades, making her debut onto the literary scene, enveloped me with a quality of writing that gave me the sensation of being in the garden of which she so eloquently describes. She took me on a journey through Mexican history and brought me home to a special place in her heart that she named Amacuepantle.

I read this book for Dr. Bryan Mark Rigg's class at SMU and I was very impressed. It is very rare that you hear about the "half-Jews" during the Third Reich. It was very detailed and opened the study of the Holocaust wide open. No longer will teachers focus simply on the concentration camps, but now will also look at those forced into seclusion for being, as Hitler called them, "half-breeds." Well researched on an obscure topic. I enjoyed the book very much, must read to fully understand the Holocaust

James Tent has done a masterful work of discussing the history of "Mischlinge" (partial-Jews) during the Third Reich. His well written account tells the tragic stories of countless "Mischlinge" and the struggles they faced under Hitler. In a largely unknown field of research, Tent sheds light on a chapter of Nazism that is deserving of more study. I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of the Holocaust and the Third Reich.

When I picked up this book, I was uncertain I would find the topic all that interesting -- once started, I found I couldn't put the book down. An unheard of experience with an academic history. Professor Tent is a distinguished historian whose earlier work has been characterized by meticulous research and flawless analysis. This book is no exception, and yet it is so well-written and engrossing that it reads both quickly and well. As with his earlier works, Prof. Tent has chosen a subject about which little has been written and has again produced a masterpiece of the historian's art. Obviously a man of considerable decency, Tent treats his subjects with deep respect and sympathy when he uses interviews with the aging survivors to bring about an understanding for their plight and the keen sense of an inexorably tightening official noose as the war progressed. "In the Shadow of the Holocaust" effects the reader on several levels for it is not only an excellent scholarly study of the these now all but forgotten victims of National Socialism, but of the very human impact that experience had on them and would continue to have for the remainder of their lives. I am very grateful for the impulse that led me to read this book -- it is a treasure not only as a superb history, but also as a recounting of a unique human experience.

For many years my husband and I have traveled through the Moore Haven area where the author's main character makes his home. The way Settle describes this area is so vivid that you could almost smell the earth being brought to life. Undoubtedly, the descriptions during the 1926 hurricane were chilling. The reality of this book makes it a must read for anyone who deeply loves Florida.

Not only is this historical fiction work "a good read," it offers up a lot of history about Florida that most people do not know. Real people who helped develop the state are interspersed with the lives of the main characters and, from Jacksonville to Tampa to Miami, a glimpse of early 1900s Florida becomes real. The book reminds me of James Michenor's "California Gold." Great way to learn customs of the Seminole Indians, to "experience a hurricane," and to learn about the beginnings of the Florida Everglades problems.

A Meaningful Glance into Our Past

I just finished this book in one sitting, having only intended to read a chapter or two. I was drawn in and instantly caught up in the story of Zol, and his trek toward becoming a man in his clan. This book is not only engaging, but is historically accurate, using the Clovis people as Zol's clan base. The characters seemed real and engaging; I found myself holding my breath as Zol encounters dangers that seem unfathomable for an eleven year old boy to face in 2005. I enjoyed particularly the appearance and antics of Koot, the young hunter's pet crow. His actions and behavior were very accurate for those of the Corvid family and I could not help but laugh out loud. I would certainly recommend this book to intermediate readers, especially those young people who enjoy historical fiction. Furthermore, In the Shadow of the Mammoth would be a wonderful addition to anyone's "read-aloud" collection. This book is a triumph for Ms. Clark, and I look forward to seeing more books from her.

This book is exciting from the very first page.I have bought it for six middle-school aged children in my family, both male and female, and they all loved the story. Even their parents were intrigued with the topic aand read it as well. As a former teacher, I highly recommend "In The Shadow Of The Mammoth" as a wonderful addition to a teenager's personal library.

An easy read that moves at a fast pace. Both my daughter and son loved this book (pre-teens). Although the setting is the ice age, the story speaks to the universal struggle kids face in trying to belong, have a purpose and be courageous. The action (especially the encounters with the Sabortooth Cat) had them hooked. They also really enjoyed Zol's pet crow's antics. The illustrations are beautiful and the characters come to life.

Invasion of Justice was a grab-you-by-the-throat read! After reading Justice Incarnate (book 1 of the series) I wasn't sure whether a second book could be just as riveting, compelling and page-turning. I was happy to find that Invasion was all those things and more. I especially loved Black's use of ancient lore surrounding the city of Petra in a futuristic.

As for the futuristic world Black has created, it is believable, consistent and incredibly interesting. Even a bit scary! I highly recommend both Justice Incarnate and Invasion of Justice for anyone who loves a great adventure story. A must read!

In 2096 Indianapolis, empath Petra Neiman is awakened in the middle of a nightmare by her phone. Special Agent in Charge of the Central Region Investigation Authority Kincaid demands she comes immediately alone to Chicago to "look" at a dead Jane Doe he links to two kidnappings. Petra knows all about the high profile homicide in a seaside genetics lab as she was there inside the malevolent killer in her dream.

Uncover dark-ops officer Gideon Callahan is assigned to observe Petra under the disguise of assisting her, as her brother is the top suspect in the abductions. However, Gideon becomes irate to learn she is an empath as he feels emotions do not belong at a crime scene. Soon he admits she is impressive as Petra explains that the dead amazon was in a cat fight over the shipping of cargo, females to sell on a slave auction. She hides from him and Kincaid that her brother is involved in some unexplainable way. Instead she plans to capture the evil killer she met in her dreams. Meanwhile Petra falls in love, but fears touching her beloved mean because that means intruding on his darkest secrets and perhaps worse Gideon will see the inner Pet she hides from the world.

The second Shadows of Justice futuristic paranormal mystery is a fabulous thriller that grips the audience from the moment Gideon and Petra meet at the crime scene. The who-done-it is investigated on two planes with Gideon working the mundane while watching Petra perform on the mystic lane. He, like the readers, will soon become a believer that the impossible is possible. Fans wanting an exciting something different starring a marvelous heroine will appreciate Regan Black's terrific tales (see JUSTICE INCARNATE).

Review Date: 1998-04-13
Steven Barnes has written alot of good, solid science fiction over the years -- and he uses that experience here to build a contemporary mystical fantasy adventure that entertains, intrigues and engages you completely. Iron Shadows makes forays into the darkly mystical world of cults & sexual magic, while maintaining a James Bondian plotline and reaching deep into the frailties of human interactions. The erotic tension and gripping issues make this a hard book to put down. My only amazement is that in all the explorations of human sexuality -- the only character that crosses over the standard straight stereotypes is the "evil" villain. Trite, but it doesn't destroy the quality of the remainder of the novel. Highly Recommended.

Steven Barnes has a been personal favorite of mine ever since I read "Streetlethal". Barnes is an avid Martial Artist and student of eastern philosophy whose considerable knowledge in both of these subjects shows in his stories. If you are interested at all in either of these subjects you will definitely enjoy this book. On a story level, Barnes' plots are usually not too complex; however he is a master at characterization and he really makes you care what happens to his characters. I loved this book and have already pre-ordered a copy of "Lion's Blood".

Set against the powerful and evocative backdrop of the human condition, Ahmed elegantly reveals the internal and external intrigues of love, betrayal, tragedy and dispossession afflicting humanity from time immemorial. Weaving classical themes of tragedy and redemption, each passage sheds light on the complex dualities and paradoxes that manifest in individuals and societies comprised of individuals. Consequently, this rarefied collection of poems speaks equally to the forsaken lover, the broken warrior and the restless nation-state. Strikingly vivid and deeply poignant, Leaping Shadows is a must-read for aficionados of avant garde literature and poetry.
