Its been about ten years since Paula and I have spoken, our paths have drifted far apart. "Jason", as he is called in the book, called my attention to it, as he had come across it in a Google search. In our last days together Paula was working on this, although I never really thought it would be published, as I know how tough of a thing that is to happen for an unknown writer. The story was fresh in recent memories for me at the time, so it didn't seem that interesting to me, but now 18 years later from the beginning of our tale together with many of the events all but faded into cloudy memories, its almost like hearing it for the first time. Many of the events were unknown to me at the time and the resurrection of old dark secrets between us was quite an experience, as was reading my own history as seen through the eyes of someone so close to me. I found the work honest and well-written, at times even brilliant in bringing to life events that seemed average to me at the time. The depictions of some of the psychedlic experiences would make Hunter S Thompson and Thom Wolfe proud. The directions of our lives parted when Paula saw only one route to the top of the hill and I saw many. This was a difference that was so essential to each of our beings that we had to continue on in our marches away from one another so as not to bring each other down. It appears she has done well for herself and that makes me happy. This book is an accomplishment that I'm overflowing with joy for her and proud to have been there with her throughout the journey, even as dark and confusing as it was. We made it through. I hope her spiritual growth continues to prosper as she finds new heights in her quest to be closer to God as she always has. She is one in a million.

By reading this book, I've gained greater insight into the world of darkness and the deceptions of the enemy. Parents and loved ones should read this book to understand how our children are being deceived by rock music, drugs and other bad influences. God has given Paula great insight into the underworld of Satan's deceptions. I believe when the devil's evil schemes are revealed through this book, our youth will have a better understanding of the right way to live.

All I can say is....wow......

Paula, the Author, was the first new friend I made when I began jr. high school. I remember her as a kind, interesting and very intelligent girl. I see that hasn't changed. I came across this book by accident--I recognized the name on the cover, turned the book over and recognized the face instantly. I have been enthralled reading about this woman who I knew when we were 2 gawky, geeky 13 year olds gossiping about boys, the mean popular girls, our mean teachers, and more about boys. I remember many of the things we talked about; your father, Missy and the bus incident, your trip on the "Love Boat" (I loved hearing about that and seeing all the pics from your trip!) I remember how we both changed as we went through High School, I often wondered about you, Paula. I wondered how you were doing, but you seemed so unapproachable to me. I admit that I was a bit afraid of your intensity. I couldn't understand why you would want to stand out by being so different, while I was trying so hard to blend in. Reading your story has been an enlightening experience in many ways. Thank you for having the courage to write it!

This imaginative story was very entertaining and fun to read. I really enjoyed it as a 40-year-old adult but it was my niece and nephews who adored it.

It's powerful and timely message near the end was perfectly parsed-without a trace of piety. I never saw it coming-and neither will you. That's the best part.

Very rarely will any book or movie have me laughing out loud and then tearing up the next moment. Bravo Mr. Jones!

Clever writing, wonderful illustrations, powerful message. Excellent!

Thanks to the author for putting together a very clever story with an uplifting message. The writing is like a mixture between Dr. Seuss and Shel Silverstein, both of whom my kids adore. And the lesson at the end of the book was a very pleasant surprise.

The whimsical illustrations work perfectly.

I look forward to more from this author and illustrator.

Second best collection of Nibley's collected works
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-10-10
This is the 13th collection of writings of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS) author Hugh Nibley. All of his collected writings are worth reading, although some can be fairly esoteric (such as his writings on the Pearl of Great Price and Joseph Smith Papyri). I consider this his second best collection (just behind his masterful "Approaching Zion"). And I would never use the word "intellectual" to describe Nibley because so much he wrote condemned so-called intellectuals caught up in their love of academic robes, titles and disdain for the rest of inferior humanity.

The author was a scholar of the first rank - fluent in over 20 modern and ancient languages. He wrote many academic and popular articles published in both scholarly and religious periodicals. He spent most of his life as a Professor of Religion at Brigham Young University where he received just about every possible teaching honor. He influenced countless current scholars in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. There is an excellent biography written by Boyd Petersen (see my review). He was fairly controversial at times with his prescient pro-environment and anti-war opinions. One of his many children recently stirred up some muck by retrieving absurdly false memories of abuse that have been proven as false as any such charges can be by everyone involved.

This collection includes writings over the entire span of Nibley's writings. Some portions of the included articles are redundant as Nibley often used the same quotes and portions of previous writings in his articles. Nevertheless, these articles are excellent compilations of the teachings of the LDS church's second prophet, Brigham Young. These articles are divided into 4 sections: Environment, Politics, Education, and Leadership. In all of these, Nibley chastises complacency and points out needed improvements.

The unifying theme of all these writings is that Nibley transmits the ideas and quotations of Brigham Young. Although Brigham Young only went to school 11 days, his wisdom is nearly unmatched and Nibley uses Young's writings to good effect. By the end of the book, I had identified some 2 pages of quotes that I found memorable - about evenly split between those by Brigham Young and those by Nibley. Highly recommended.

The Best Nibley Compilation

Of the multi-volume series of Hugh Nibley compilations (all pretty good, actually), this is the most consistently accessible...probably because, like Brigham himself, these articles tend to focus on real-world, less academic issues than his highly technical theologial writings. Of particular interest are the articles concerning the environment, which (perhaps inadvertently) make a compelling argument that both Brigham Young and Joseph Smith were early exemplars of what we today call environmentalism. I believe that these writings can and will contribute to new phenomenon in the Mormon world: The gradual evolution of a new LDS environmental ethic.

Nibley's work on Brigham Young proves to be thought-provoking in a day when a lot of the books paraded before us are simply kitsch. Nibley does an excellent job in bringing out classic words from Brigham Young that have too long collected dust. The sections on education, patriotism, the environment, and the media deserve reading and re-reading. Nibley has that rare strength of being able to take material that is hundreds and even thousands of years old and making it relative to our own time and our own situation. This book is no exception and is money well spent.

If you work in the field of forensic psychology, police work, and/or a crime analyst this book is a must read. This book not only is enjoyable to read but the last several chapters are filled with research backed valuable information to give the reader a realistic view into an offender's psyche. In short, this is the best book for a reader who wants a real view of how geographical profiling and investigative psychology can be utilized in investigations.

It is this reader's recommendation to stick to books written by Dr. David Canter, Dr. Laurence Alison and academic journals if you are involved on hands on work in the field of Investigative / Forensic Psychology.

Having a strong interest in true crime, with an emphasis on the psychology behind the criminal mind, I found this book imformative and entertaining. Unlike many books in this gendre it does not explore extensive graphic crime detail, but sufficient to provide an example of a point being made. The book wonderfully details a very scientific approach to understanding the criminal mind and profiling. It is interesting how a strong emphasis is placed on geographic profiling, the book explains the reasons for this.
Clearly anyone who has studied some basic psychology and the works of well known 'theorists' will enjoy some sections more than those who haven't. If you haven't don't worry there are many sections anyone interested in the subjuct matter will find facinating. You may well discover a little about yourself.
Overall if you are interested in psychological profiling and how it works get a copy and have a read.

Highly Informative, Highly Recommended

Dr. Canter's book is the best book I have read on the subject of criminal profiling. Unlike most other books on the topic, like the ones written by former FBI profilers, Dr. Canter lucidly explains how to construct a profile of serial rapists and killers. This book is also an introduction to Investigative Psychology, a field of study developed by Dr. Canter et. al. Worth reading for anyone interested in serial murder and criminal profiling.

Jenna Mills has to be one of the best writers rising in the Romance Genre today. She has a way of creating characters that come alive, she uses plots and emotions with razor edge precision, luring the reader to a breathless involvement without ever being manipulative. Good writers craft prose to push buttons in their readers. The truly talented ones do something more. They "See" their books like a movie in their head and use the prose, the magic of words, to gift the readers with the same experience. You don't read Mills' books you SEE the book inside your head. Jenna Mills dances in fire and invites the reader to join her. I won't give away a lot of the plot in this, since there are other books in the series, and you should discover the strong and unusual plotline yourself.

Danielle Caldwell, a working-mother raising her five-year-old son, hears words no mother wants to hear "your son has been kidnapped." After she receives the shattering news, she recalls the darkly handsome man in the lobby of the inn where she works, remembers one of the employees saying he was asking about her. Putting two and two together, she assumes the man has something to do with her missing son. Gutsy Danielle pulls a derringer on him and demands information, when he cannot deliver that and says he is FBI, she demands he leave her alone. The warning the kidnappers gave her was to keep the police out of it - or else.

Leaving her alone is the one thing he cannot do. Liam Brooks is a hunter, he has long been tracking a killer called Titan. It has cost him nearly everything, it cost him the life of his wife, because when Liam got too close to trapping Titan, the killer punished Liam. Now Liam is a man obsessed with vengeance. Only Titan's trail has grown cold, years cold. So when he received a tip about Danielle Caldwell, he defies his superiors and rushes after the trail of the ghostly Titan.

Danielle knows she should not trust FBI agent, a man with a too close relationship with the bottle, but she has no one else to turn to when the horror hits. Why would someone kidnap the son of a working woman, a woman of little importance? Titan wants something from her, but what? Reluctantly, she has little choice to trust Liam. Only, she is unprepared for the instant emotional bond, she sees this man has been deeply hurt. Worse, the sexual attraction is a complication she could well do without.

There is a "structured feel", because this is a series where the various writers must work with in a theme, however Mills takes the line and creates her own feel. That she can write within a preformed outline, only shows what strong a writer she is. It's easy to write a story that comes to your with the inspiration of a Muse. It is harder to take you talent and summer the magic to fit within another dictates. Mills crafts a dark, sinister tale, with strongly drawn characters that, once again, pull the reader along, make you care. It just does not get any better than this.

another super tale from Jensen

Review Date: 2004-06-17
I prefer the tales where Jensen writes what she wants, rather than fitting into a "series" the publishers set. She shines best when she can fly by her own instincts. So this tale is a little "tight" feeling as if she is chafing at the bit to do it all her own. That said, she still shines is this tale of kidnapping and the hunt for a serial killer, showing Jensen, without doubt, is one of the best voices in series romance today.

Silhouette would just do better to stand back and let Jensen do what she wants!

From the "Family Secrets" series

Review Date: 2004-05-31
A cry in the dark awakens the first generation of those people who were genetically altered during experiments in the sixties. They hear a child, but their own children are fine, yet they each know something is very wrong. At that very moment, six-year-old Alex is kidnapped. His mother, Danielle Caldwell, has gypsy blood and a gift for precognition. Once she made a mistake using her gift, which resulted in her child's father's death, and now she has turned her back on her gift and the family who would have her use it.

A string of clues brings Liam Brooks to Diana's door. After his wife's death, Liam has dedicated himself to bringing Titan down. Uncertain as to how, Liam is convinced that Titan is connected to Titan. He does not understand Diana's adamant refusal to accept his help or his own determination to offer it. Guarded and emotionally repressed, Liam is surprised at his reactions to Diana and his sudden need to bring her child home.

Author Jenna Mills pens a compelling and evocative kick off to the "Family Secrets: The Next Generation" series. A CRY IN THE DARK grabs the reader from the beginning and never lets up with its intense emotional stake and unexpected twists. The use of paranormal gifts is handled with finesse as Diana confronts her past and her abilities. Liam's pain haunts him, blocking him from any emotional connection to the present except the driving need to bring Titan down; that is, until he meets Diana. His powerful internal conflict adds just the right balance to Diana's struggle. A masterfully rendered tale, A CRY IN THE DARK comes very highly recommended.

I gave the book 5 stars because it is complete in that is contains all the major Dark Shadows themes. However, it is so tightly bound it will not stay open on the music stand. I had to resort to heavy clips to hold the book and then the few pages containing the current selection won't stay open. A real pain for an otherwise good book.

This music collection is a must have for fans of the classic television series "Dark Shadows." Robert Cobert ("Winds of War," "War and Remembrance," and others) composed the music for the series as well as two related films. Eighteen selections by Cobert are included in this book which is arranged for piano, with guitar chords and vocal lines where available.

This is one of the most comprehensive music books from a TV series I have ever seen. The arrangements are not only well written, but unlike many songbooks, these arrangements sound as much like the original recorded music as possible.

Bonus sections include a photo gallery, a DS discography, and DS lyrics.

Wow, for this book to be republished now might almost
seems like a crime! The thrills don't stop, and there
are only like 4 "good" endings. In one of the good
endings, you win a lot of money, but the only thing I
didn't like about the choices there were that they
didn't let you bet on the green when you were playing
roulette. In two other scenarios, you manage to
barely escape death. In one of them, you complete
your mission 100% successfully. Some of things that
can happen to you are gruesome enough to make it such
a good book, but maybe too good. You could get a
hypodermic needle put into you, gas will envelop you
in a limousine, or you could be turned into an
experimental subject in which if you read enough of
the endings, you will understand that eventually this
human experiment that you have become will explode
into smithereens as a few intense examples. Maybe a
teen rating is not enough, maybe it should even have
been placed as an R rating. If this was turned into a
movie showing the various scenarios, it'd definitely
be rated R at least. You go Brightfield!!
This book may be a continuous portion from another, as
it starts off with how you have just "successfully"
completed a mission from the Far East in the 2nd
sentence of page 1. The book displays how worldly
Packard can be just like in #39 Supercomputer.
Dramatic and to the point to say the least.

A fabulous book, which is full of Armenian History, Religion and above all the horrible genocide perpetrated by the Turkish government on the Armenian minority on their own ancestral lands. A novel indeed, but nothing is fictionalized. Although it does not convey completely the suffering of the Armenian people, no other novel will ever be able to do that.

The book is full of suspense and adventure, that of the brave American Consul, the main character, the slaved women of Hekim Khan. It is so well written that almost reads like a movie script. This book will make a great movie, rivaling any movie which depicts adventure, daring, danger, love, compassion, cruelty, famine, and self-sacrifice for the sake of less fortunate people.

This is a great book; it is light reading telling a story of those caught in the Armenian Genocide of 1915. It is historically very accurate, and actually gives the reader more insight into what was going in Turkey during the Genocide than many other books on the subject. It deals with many of the feelings and spiritual struggles that Armenians must have been going through during the horrific times, and it unbiasedly looks at the attitudes that Armenians and Turks had towards each other. This is a great Christian book for those knowing little about the subject and a good book for those already familiar with the history to examine the personal and spiritual issues that survivors must have gone through.

Very good reading!

I read this book twice because it took me twice to really take it all in. The heart of man is only evil continually, but this book inspires believers to stand for their faith in the most awful circumstances. This is excellent history of a holocaust little mentioned, and I learned a lot about the Armenians, the Turks, and the Kurds, which helps explain the conflict that continues among them today. I will certainly read other books by this author.

After reading the book and visiting Durgin Park (as I have many times in the last 20 years) the reader will clearly see Chef Tommy Ryan has a basic principle and that is you must start with quality ingredients. Everything from the meat, fish, poultry, vegetables and deserts comes from the purveyors who sell the very best. After the Chef and his team prepare your meal it's truly a culinary masterpiece and this book gives the reader the steps to success in his/her home kitchen.

Every now and then you run across an exceptional cookbook. The Durgin-Park Cookbook is one example. It is beautifully laid out with good photos and interesting sidebars full of extra tidbits of history and anecdotes about this Boston institution.

Over the past weekend I made three recipes from this cookbook alone. The Corn Bread # 2 recipe was a real keeper. It had a light texture, was moist, and was crispy on the edges. I added my own twist by throwing in finely diced fresh chives and sun-dried tomatoes in olive oil (drained).

The chicken wings, marinated and basted with a garlic and ginger sauce, were also quite easy and tasty. As with any cookbook, I always analyze the ingredients and decide if they will be to my taste. For example, if ginger powder is called for, as in the chicken wings recipe in this book, I almost always use fresh ginger. Why not? I keep one-inch length pieces of ginger in the freezer and just take them out whenever a recipe calls for powder or fresh. It's all personal preference of course. I just happen to think ground ginger powder tastes harsh.

The Parmesan Potato Rounds recipe was also quite excellent. It is made much like a gratin, but without the heavy cream. Again, it was simple to make and tasted like it took much longer. If you like Parmigiano-Reggiano and potatoes, what's not to like about this recipe? It had a crispy crust on top and soft, perfectly cooked potatoes on the inside.

The Sterns have put together some excellent cookbooks over the years and I'd have to say that this is one of my favorites in the Roadfood series. There are recipes for entertaining as well as daily fare. Most of the ingredient lists for the recipes are easily managed without a lot of complicated chopping, dicing, measuring, etc.

Hmm, let's see, this weekend maybe I'll make the Stuffed Pork Chops and Onion Casserole or perhaps the Scalloped Tomatoes...

factual basises. My two favorites areThe murder of federal revenue agent "Pistol Pete" Bowden (no relation to the author)and the story of the truck driver whose load was a coffin with a newly executed prisoner being transported to his home town for burial is a classic as the driver is arrested because the sheriff figured the coffin was loaded with moonshine whisky. It took the
Governor and a future Governor to come up with a solution.

Bowden is a master when it comes to simplifing complicated
Civil War Battles. Here he reviews Gettysburg and Chickamauga
not only from an overall perspective but also from a regimental
and ordinary soldier's view. Three of his ancestors had served in Alabama units in both battles.

Naturally he could not neglect the Battle of Santa
Rosa island. Ft Pickens is on Sanata Rosa Island and may have been the location where the war actually began. It is a cause celebre in Pensacola and since Hurricane Kathina will not be visted by car for a long time.

Other articles deal with memorable local people: historian EW Carswell, Pensacolia born General Danial (Chappie)
James and western singer Hank Locklin.

Other articles are entaining, either evoking a belly laugh, nostalgia or sadness. All are a social commentary on
Northwest Florida from Pensacola to Madison County and all from
the pen of an author who knows and is proud of his heritage.

Jesse Earle Bowden's latest book, EMBRACE AN AUTUMNAL HEART, is his bet yet. With the precision of the poet's quill, he captures the essence of life as seen from the J.W. Bowden Grocery Story in Chipola Country of Northwest Florida. He shares his memories of the down-home folks who always have time to invite you in to set a spell. From the backwoods gopher puller who catches land turtles for food, to the picutesque icehouse that provides 50-pound blocks of ice for those who don't have refrigerators, life flows like the currents of the Chipola and Apalachicola Rivers that run through the county.

His recollections of World War II from the vantage point of a country boy on the edge of his teens, will trigger your own long forgotten memories of that era.

In the historical section titled "Fatal Shadows" he writes from his lifelong study and knowledge of the Civil War. He mined the documented records to trace the lives of his three Alabama grandsires in the Gettysburg and Chickamunga battles. Using tools of fiction to resurrect the torment of the 1860s, he parallels novelist Shelby Foote's masterpiece, THE CIVIL WAR: A NARRATIVE. Bowden's account is a concise presentation of the Civil War that will intrigue history buffs of all ages. In writing nonfiction, he paints picture-making immediacy, and employs tools of fiction to good advantage in crafting nostalgic stories resonating with heart, spirit and universal remembrance.

You will chuckle as he reveals the foibles of real Cracker politics, including little known facts about Florida governors of the past half century, many of whom he knew personally.

He writes of the horror and anguish of a family member's murder, from the wife discovering her husband's butchered body, to capture and trial of the guilty perpetrators, and be haunted by the callous disregard for human life.

EMBRACE AN AUTUMNAL HEART has wide appeal because of its many facets, including nostalgia, the Civil War, Florida politics and murder, all presented in Bowden's distinctive style. The book is a literary enrichent and well worth your time spent reading it.

I am a great fan of J. Earle Bowden and have five of his books in my library. I feel that he has reached his writing pinnacle in his latest work, "Embrace an Autumnal Heart."
The 448 page novels starts with the excitement of a 13 year-old boy on December 7, 1941, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and changed, forever, the world, awakening a sleeping giant and bringing the U.S. onto the worled stage as a super power.
The first seven chapters of the book tell of quickening changes in the life of a boy coming of age in a bucolic setting in Northwest Florida.
Then Bowden does some of his best fiction writing. He begins with a realistic rural hanging, tells of some of the Great Depression hardships, the story of a soon-to-be, Florida governor's part in getting the body of an electrocuted criminal's body home to his grieving mother.
He tells of now-gone Panhandle leaders such as Judge J.W. Carswell, General Daniel (Chappie) James, country music star, Hank Locklin and others whom Bowden knew personally.
The language of the book is classic Bowden, with descriptions and situations written so brilliently that you are actually transported there by the power of sentence structure that can only come from the pen of a master story teller.
I highly recommend this book to those who love history and especially those who lived during the last half of the 20th Century.
