The Cure of Ars is one of the most exciting books about the saints done by the "story teller of the saints" Mary Fabyan Windeatt. This book tells how St. John Vianney had trouble becoming a priest, his lifelong work at the town of Ars, his fights with the devil, about the pilgrims flocking to the town, his attempts to become a hermit, and his holy death. I strongly recommend this book to any person who is studying for the priesthood or is thinking of it. I like this book for numerous reasons. The main reason I like this book is how the author writes it. She makes you feel that you are in the story with the saint. This is what she wrote at the beginning of the book... "My name is John, and I have been dead since August 4, 1859. How happy I am! For my soul is in Heaven. Yes, for eternity I am privileged to see God... For endless eternity I enjoy a happiness that is beyond the power of mere words to describe."

Lifestory of Saint with Catholic doctrinal truths for kids!

This book is great for readers of ages 10-100. There are 211 pages with each chapter's reading not more than 10-12 pages each. The story relates the life of the Saint John Vianney from childhood to deathbed. It conveys how human Vianney was as well as the virtues that made him a saint, most especially how humble he was and his perserverance against the attacks of the devil. If you want to inspire a young boy to the priesthood, if you are a Catholic homeschooling family, if you teach Catholic religious education, or someone just interested in learning what a parish priest life is like, then this is the book for you!

This is another wonderful tale from Stuart who gives you big book quality even in series romance. He is naturally dark and brooding, the O'Neil, living with his housekeeper and son on the edge of the Maine coast, hiding from deep dark secrets and torments that he could not save him family from drowning. Cursed to live alone.
She runs off the road in the middle of a hurricane to avoid hitting a ghostly little girl and it plunges her car into the deep waters of the sound. Just as she thought she was dying she is saved by O'neil.

Taking the old worst opening line to start a book and making it a title, Stuart gives you one great supernatural tale and another of her dark tormented heroes.

I could not put this book down. All I can say is if you loved Jane Yolens book "Greyling" as a child, you will love the shape-shifting hero O'Neal, and his ghostly family. This book is as good as it gets.

Dr. Lumpkin leads the reader through the interior maze of Christian enlightenment. The mystical experience of meeting God within our own soul will bring tears that will wash clean your soul. I wept at the reality of God in me, and me in Him. This book is the wonderful combination of ancient and modern mystical writings, along with scripture and personal observation.

Excellent Disaster Book, Fascinating Story

Thomas and Witts tell the story of a week in May, 1902,when the Carrabean city of St. Pierre was obliterated by a volcanic eruption. When I first saw this book, I wondered how anyone could pen over 150 pages on a volcano that wiped a city out in seconds, leaving only two survivors. I thought there would not be much to write about. Boy was I wrong! It turns out that in the week prior to the eruption, St. Pierre was hit by landslides, a tsunami, and even a deadly snake infestation! Several hundred were killed before the great event itself. The final eruption is simply the climatic horror and can almost be seen as a blessing, putting people out of their misery. This book is probably hard to find now, but it is worth getting, and will interest just about everyone from the scientist to the casual reader.

Story of a Political as Well as Natural Disaster

Review Date: 2001-05-27
To me this review does not do justice to the most compelling aspect of the book, which is how political pressure, and assurances of safety in the face of all evidence to the contrary, by governmental officials and other trusted leaders dissuaded the people of St. Pierre from evacuating the city in time to save their lives. I read this book many years ago and have forgotten some of the details, but this theme -- more popularly explored in "Jaws" and recently in "Isaac's Storm" -- has stayed in my mind. Most readers will never be threatened by a volcanic eruption, but this book is a somewhat grim reminder that our own leaders may be lying about impending natural disasters. Remember Pelee!

Letters of Love

I picked up "Dear Hope ... Love, Grandma" because it was so beautiful with a photo of Grandma as a child on the dust cover. I sat in the bookstore and read it cover to cover before buying it. The book is non-fiction. Grandma Hilda and Hope are real people. Each chapter is a story. I couldn't put it down.

"Dear Hope ... Love, Grandma" makes you realize the possibilities of grandmother-granddaughter relationships. Nine-year-old Hope and her grandma write from their hearts. Through their letters, Grandma tells Hope the story of her life. Grandma Hilda was the youngest of five children. Her mother was an immigrant Jewish widow who barely spoke English, yet she managed to impart to all of her children a love of family, loyalty to one another, a love of God, and a healthy dose of humor to see them through the hard times ahead.

Grandma Hilda writes affectingly. She never talks down to Hope and hence not to us either. This is a small gem from an obscure publisher that deserves our attention. It is cautionary tale as well. If we do not save our family stories, our elderly relatives will take them to their graves, and we will lose untold treasures. We doubtless already have.

There is much to be learned from this beautiful volume. I highly recommend it to grandchildren and grandparents alike. What a treasure for you to share together.

Connecting the Generations

This is one of the most moving books I have ever read ... because it's true. Grandma Hilda is the grandmother we all wish we had had. She's warm, she's loving, she's kind, she's funny, she's generous, and above all, she's real.

Through her letters to her granddaughter Hope, Grandma Hilda tells the story of her life. Born in 1902 in the Jewish ghetto of St. Louis, Hilda was the youngest of 5 surviving children. Her father died when she was 2. She was raised by her mother who barely spoke Engish, and yet her mother managed to convey to her children her values of love of family, love of God, honesty, loyalty, devotion, and a liberal dose of humor to wash it all down.

Above all, this book is a cautionary tale to save our family stories before it's too late. If Hope had not cared enough to write to her Grandma, these wonderful stories would have gone with Grandma Hilda to her grave. How many family stories could be saved if we all took the time to do what little 7-year-old Hope did? After I read this book, I followed Hope's example. Now my own mother is dead and just like Hope, I have her stories.

Bravo DEAR HOPE ... LOVE, GRANDMA! Everyone needs to read this book.

"Dear Joan,
I love you truly, madly, deeply, but..."

Anyone who has ever been in love, or thought they were, and decided to give this twosome-thing a try...

"Dear Joan,
I love you truly, madly, deeply, but you are truly, madly deeply driving me..."

...can relate to standing in a state of utter frustration and despair in their lover's kitchen/bedroom/bathroom/whatever room at some ungodly hour in the early morning as their mind...

"Dear Joan,
I love you truly, madly, deeply, but you are truly, madly, deeply driving me away...far, far away. And I don't want to be far, far away from you, but...

xx,
-Annette"

...wrestles with their heart and their hormones in a battle that will, ultimately, determine the outcome of their love life. "Dear Joan" is a witty, honest look at two people whose paths crossed and must now decide if they should continue on together or if they should part ways before what was once love/lust turns to hate/disgust.

I anxiously await the next instalment in the series, "Another Dear Joan", from Ms. Saint Marie. The Secret Keeping

This is the best written Amazon Shorts I've read so far, not only in terms of basic writing skills (surprisingly lacking in many Shorts I've read), but in the soulful revelation of the story. The characters live and breathe; the delicious morsels of their insightful wit pepper the story. No matter what your persuasion, everyone can relate to the relationship angst of Dear Joan.

It was very interesting... three stories in one book. I like the Lone Star Country Club series, and this helped me to see transitions of the other characters whom I'm following from the series, especially baby Lena and her mother. It's amazing how different authors can collaborate and keep the integrity of the whole series flowing. Keep these stories coming.

This is a wonderful anthology. The Debs are Jenna, Mary and Frankie written by Ms Barton, Ms Rimmer & Ms Major. Ms Rimmer's Mary works at the dress shop where the ball gowns are created by her best friend Maragret McKenzie. They are the continuing characters through out the book. Jenna wants a real 'cowboy'to be her escort to the Lone Star C.C. Ball. She meets Brent and wants him to be that cowboy. Mary crashes the Ball and meets by design the town's young attorney James but keeps her identity a secret. Frankie only wants 1 man-the poor next door rancher Matt. All 3 go to extremes to get her man but find the journey to the ball worth it. There are 12 more single titles in the series. The first of which is Ms Rimmer's June release STROKE OF FORTUNE.

This is the alpha and the omega regarding The Divine Mercy message, its origins and content. Sister (now Saint) Faustina received this message via visitations from Our Lord. You can read it slowly since it is divided into many small sections. A great bed table book. And you need not read it cover to cover to receive immense inspiration. Even random passages are meaningful. If you simply want to learn about The Divine Mercy OR if you already know about it and want to immerse yourself in it... then this is the book for you.

A Beautiful and Powerful Work!

Review Date: 2004-03-28
Divine Mercy In My Soul is a MUST read. This is the intimate diary of Saint Faustina, a nun who lived in Poland during the early 1900's. She received apparitions of Jesus and He commanded her to have an image of Him painted- depiciting His Divine Mercy. (With the red and white rays pouring from His pierced Sacred Heart.) There are many, many messages that Jesus gave to St. Faustina about His burning love for the world and about His unfathomable Divine Mercy- that It excludes no one who wants to receive His Mercy. This diary is beautifully written-- it is humble and realistic. Although St. Faustina was known to nearly no one, she was charged with the great work of telling all souls about the infinite Divine Mercy of God. This is a poetic work of the heart and a profession of St. Faustina's great love for God and humanity. This is a beautiful revelation from God. I can not recommend this book highly enough!

Tremendous Resource

Review Date: 2002-03-26
Are you sick of pouring through the contemporary name books? Then pick up this treasure. Featuring more than 8,000 girls and boys names, the advantage to this resource is that it lists appropriate patron saints for most of the names, along with a very brief biography of such saints, the meaning of the name and includes the feast day for the patron.

For parents desiring to find Christian names for their children, this is an indispensible resource.

In addition to common Germanic, English, French, and Irish/Gaelic names, the book also features many African-American, Native American, and Arabic names as well.

You'll find such common names as Thomas, Anne, Susan, and David, as well as less common names such as Marva, Montana, LaShawna, and Moesha.

Where there is no appropriate patron saint for a given name, the book will examine the history of a name, break it down into parts, or find a patron that relates to the name's meaning so that very few names do not have a patron associated with them.

I recommend this book for any parent deciding on names for their children.

From the introduction of the thought-provoking concept of "Therefore What", Rob Eaton presents important principles in a way that sheds new light on Christian values and makes the reader want to take the next step - actually incorporating these values into one's everyday life. No matter where you are in your spiritual progression, this book will help move you closer to Christ. With insights on finances in the Kingdom of God (on what should your money be spent), spiritual combat, record keeping, the nature and role of adversity, effective family time, and so much more, this is a must-read book!

I've read many books that are heavy on insight but provide little practical application. I've read many others brimming with practical suggestions on how to live life, but which contain precious few interesting ideas to give any real depth to the advice. Both are nice, but neither entirely satisfying.

It is therefore delightful to read an essay that combines both as smoothly and inspiringly as Eaton's "Pahoran Principle" (in a chapter toward the middle of Digging Deeper). This chapter of Digging Deeper struck me particularly hard, but others are equally strong, with thoughts on individual Book of Mormon stories and verses presented in very readable and consistently thought provoking pieces.

This is a great book for the scripture reader who wants to think "that's an interesting twist I hadn't thought of before," followed shortly by "that would really help me as I deal with _____." For me there were any number of vexing problems of my own that I inserted in the blank as I was reading, and I came away both inspired and motivated to move forward on them - and with new thoughts on how to do it.
