I am 16 years old and in love with God. This book was such an amazing inspiration to me in my spiritual life that now I want to do so much more for the Lord. If these little Saints could have so much faith and trust in God so as to give their very lives for Him, I can at least be a Saint for Him! A must-read for anyone seeking holiness.

Great book.

(...)Many Sunday School classes have fallen into debates on what Jesus meant by the words we must become as little children to see the Kingdom. Perhaps He was thinking of such children as those recounted in this book. The brief time on Earth these little ones spent only sharpened the impact of their lives of devotion and love. Their lives are ones to inspire readers as they learn of the goodness exhibited by these children, often in the face of terrible pain and suffering. Even Protestants might find a pearl to cling to in times of trial. (...)

Your Sorrow is My Sorrow is one of those once in a lifetime books. I happened to pick this up by accident, or should I say by divine Providence. The words are comforting whether you have lost a loved one, to death, drugs or mistrust...this book will carry you through. The words of Mary come striking through to the heart and lay to rest in the lap of comfort and solace. The prayers are simple yet heartfelt. This is a book that will get you through the rough times. Thank you Joyce Rupp!

Fans of St. Louis sports will find this a fine keepsake edition recounting tales of record-breaking events in St. Louis sports. This was originally scripted for KFNS Radio as part of a series, using vignettes to consider the personalities and events of fourteen different regional sports. While this holds special interest for Missouri residents, any with an interest in local sports history will find its lively descriptions and black and white photos compelling.

"Must" reading for all St. Louis sports fans!

In The 100 Greatest Moments In St. Louis Sports, Hall of Fame journalist Bob Broeg recounts in a descriptive story-telling style the most outstanding, unusual, legendary, and thrilling episodes in fourteen different sports by St. Louis athletes. The individual stories range from 1899 (The Day Old Cy, New Cards Came to Town) to 1969 (Stop-Off to Cooperstown: Carlton's 19-K Game) and range from the comedic to the heroic. The 100 Greatest Moments In St. Louis Sports is highly recommended for anyone who delights in the history of athletic competition and achievement.

For the price of this book, you get some fantastic information, not too deep, but meaty enough to be interesting in a "knowledge" way or a devotional way. The prayers are especially thought-provoking. A traditional and a modern prayer are included for each title, and they are rich enough to return to again and again. A real boon for those with a devotion to Our Blessed Mother.

Perhaps the most popular saint of all, Mary, the Mother of Jesus, has come to be known by innumerable titles of devotion-some lists include more than six thousand titles-reflecting her many qualities. Some people call her the Blessed Mother. Others, the Blessed Virgin Mary-BVM for short-or the Virgin, Our Lady, or, simply, Mary. From Ark of the New Covenant to Virgin of Tenderness, from Our Lady of All Nations to Queen of Peace, this proliferation of titles reflects the different ways people relate to Mary.
Calling upon Scripture, the writings of the early Church, the pronouncements of the saints, papal statements, and recent biblical and theological scholarship, 100 Names of Mary provides historical and theological explanations of the origins of one hundred of Mary's most popular and intriguing names from around the world and across the Christian millennia. Each of the names also includes both traditional and newly written prayers of intercession to Mary that reflect the particular charisms of her titles. Together with an inspiring new Litany of Mary, the stories and prayers in this book provide a portrait of Mary
as mother, companion, disciple, apostle, and advocate who continues to guide the people of God on the path to holiness.

The Vision of God

Review Date: 2006-01-09
This work contains two of St. Gregory of Nyssa's collections of homilies, the first on the Lord's Prayer and the second on the Beatitudes. They are classic works on the nature of the spiritual life by one of the most important Church Fathers of the late 4th century and one whose popularity has increased in the 20th century.

"The effect of prayer is union with God..." (The Lord's Prayer, Sermon 1). In his five sermons on the Lord's Prayer, Gregory invites the reader - the listener! - to embark upon the pursuit of the infinite God in praying the prayer that Jesus taught to the disciples. Each point in the prayer is like a kernel that contains profound spiritual truth, and the ultimate purpose in prayer is attaining likeness unto God. "The pure in heart shall see God." This simple statement is at the very heart of Gregory's understanding of the Beatitudes. Commenting upon a different Beatitude in each sermon, he posits that the they are like a series of steps ascending to God. This ascent is a becoming a son of God, sharing intimately in God's own life.

Many readers may be surprised at the way that Gregory approaches Scripture. He is rather disinterested in getting into the socio-historical context in which each of the above emerged and far more interesting in discussing the application of them to the Christian life. This is no merely "practical application", however. St. Gregory teaches that God is dynamically active. It is, in many ways, a playful image: the God who incites our desire for Him is infinite and incapable of being exhausted by us. "It seems to me that what we desire is nothing else but the Lord Himself" (The Beatitudes, Sermon 8) and this holy desire is a striving forward for God, with God, into God. As unending pursuit, it is unending union.

In our spiritual activity (praying the Lord's Prayer) and in our ethical and moral life (living the Beatitudes), we hear the intimations of "the sweet voice of the Spirit" (The Beatitudes, Sermon 6). Rather than separating the theological from the practical or the mystical from the moral and ethical, St. Gregory keeps them all together as inseparable parts of the same thing: our life in Christ.

Personal Calling to Freedom

Review Date: 2007-11-21
Brennan Hill began studying and teaching classes on heroes a number of years ago. Like his earlier work, 8 Spiritual Heroes: Their Search for God, his new book employs a "bibliographical theology" based on life experiences and born in the hearts of individuals. This theology, he writes, "evolves from truth to truth as we live out our lives and search for our true selves, our mission in life and the meaning of the world around us."

Hill maintains a compelling narrative style while interweaving historical information with the personal journey of each hero. In addition to portraying the extraordinary courage of his subjects, the author always includes the everyday disciplines underlying their heroism, disciplines we can imitate. For example, Harriet Tubman was "always talking to the Lord." Cesar Chavez overcame his natural shyness when asked to speak before crowds of migrant workers. Corrie ten Bloom and Nelson Mandela urged forgiveness and peace. For me, these examples and others like them are one way in which Hill met his goal in writing 8 Freedom Heroes: "It is my hope that your encounter with these heroes will help you, as it has helped me, discover the things from which you need to be freed, as well as come to a better understanding of your own personal calling to free others."

This is an OPUS MAGNUS of profound erudition! An indispensable must have for any student of Gothic Art & Architecture. From sheathed shafts thrusting upwards penetrating groin vaults to the most scholarly look nto this seminal figure in the Middle Ages, this text has it all! While certainly not a light read, it is a and important and pivotal work in the scholarship of the beginning of the Gothic era. It should be more readily available.

Elementary reading for Gothic art admirers

"This was precisely...what St. Bernard had thundered against...
No figure painting or sculpture...,gems, pearls, gold and silk were forbidden...
Suger, however, was frankly in love with splendor and beauty in every
conceivable form."
[On the Abbey Church of St. Denis]
One of the few early accounts on the gothic cathedral building. Introduction itself is worth the money. Mr. Panofsky is explaining political, social and personal influences that together with Suger's psychological traits led to the construction of what is supposed to be the first Gothic catedral - St. Denis. The keyword here is "influences" - do not expect to learn the construction process or anything of that kind. Account itself does not contains many construction details, but deserves your attention indeed. Kind regards, Mario.

Having read lots of "guidebooks" about cities both in the states and in other countries, I can confidently recommend this book as one of the most comprehensive and usable! As residents of the Twin Cities, our household brings out this book everytime we want to know more about a building we've seen, when we want to know how late the zoo is open, or when we can't decide where to have a great dinner out. It is fun to read, very well organized by areas of the cities, and includes great information, such as history of neighborhoods and buildings, menu recommendations for restaurants, and where to find "hidden" locales. Excellent!

Unlike all the other Minneapolis guide books i saw. this one has an entire chapter about the mall of america (which is the whole reason for our trip to minneapolis), but it lists and describes many of the stores (especially the unusual and unique ones), and it has interesting facts about the mall. The book also has great maps. And the best part is, it color codes it's entries. Parks and outdoor activities are printed in green, hotels are in blue, resturaunts in red, etc. This book was a huge help in planning what to do and how long to stay.

Fabulous Retelling of Hamlet on the Plains
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-02
Don't expect to find a bare retelling of Hamlet in 19th Century dress. Deana James creates memorable characters, both good, bad and in between, to populate this extraordinay two book set. In fact, I really think this book should have been published as one volume even though several years pass in the story between the two books.

Deana James is very thoughtful and clever writer. I'm sorry that she does not seem to be writing fiction right now. It fact it is extraordinarily unfair that some romance writers who put out the same threadbare story over and over in barely literate prose are publishing when James (Mona Sizer in real life) is no longer publishing fiction. She is publishing, under her own name, historical works about Texas.

There are also, if you check around on Amazon, two reviews by former students of her that say all the things I would want said about me had I been an English teacher.

One of the Best!

If you like a book with compelling characters, exciting plot, and classic dialogue, then this is the book for you. The main characters in the book are actors--Shakespearean actors. As I love (and teach) Shakespeare, all the references added a kick to the story. Even if you aren't familiar with the Bard, the story is good enough to suck you in regardless. I would have to say that this book (and its sequel "Acts of Love"--they really count as one book because the author structured her story like a play so Acts 1-3.1 are in this book & Acts 3.2-5 are in the next) would be in my top ten list of favorite books.

I read the Adventures of Rolo and though I am an adult, was truly facinated with Rolo's adventures. He had a very interesting day and one does not want to put the book down until you find out what else Rolo has done or where he is going next. It's one of those books that children will read over and over. It brings a smile to your face. I highly recommend it.
