Thoughtful reminiscence by Henry Eyring
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-25
Henry Eyring was an accomplished chemist and lifelong Christian. This book, his posthumously published reflections, addresses both aspects of his life, but it is directed more to Christians (and Mormons specifically) than to chemists. The unifying exhortation of the book is to find truth everywhere possible.

Dr. Eyring weaves advice about living and believing with stories from his life, especially his childhood. Throughout the book, he displays confidence that science and religion are allies, that God exists and is good, and that sometime in the eternities everything will make sense. He frequently expresses love for his parents and admiration for his church leaders.

He starts by writing about his guiding principles and his religion. Next, he quickly explains evolution and radiometric dating, and then briefly summarizes science at all measurement scales. He concludes that God is a better scientist than he is and that he is willing to let God use whatever processes God wants to use.

This book is thoughtful and exhibits great perspective. I found Dr. Eyring's humility and honesty refreshing. The conversational writing style makes for an enjoyable and quick read.

Remarkable look at Mormon Intellectualism

Henry Eyring was my chemistry professor and had an amazing ability to explain complex processes in a manner that made sense and engaged the student. I read this book in the early 80's, not long after Dr. Eyring passed away. A deeply intelligent man, he tried hard to reconcile his faith with science in general. Most interesting were his comments on evolution where he was loath to discount both the intellect and motives of those who believed evolution was scientifically sound. What a breath of fresh air such statements were in an era where religious dogmatists such as Bruce R. McConkie and Boyd K. Packer were moving the LDS church away from a culture of learning to an insular world of strict interpretation of scripture and blind obedience to authority.

Henry Eyring if alive today would be deeply alarmed at what he would see in the religion of his heritage. The LDS church is in deep turmoil because the church stubbornly holds to implausible myths, when the scientific method exposes those myths for what they are. After Boyd K. Packer's "The Mantle is Far Greater" speech, the LDS church has lost all credibility with the scientific community and intellectual thought within the Mormon corridor has been suppressed and villified. This book by a dying old chemist was hopefully not the last gasp of Mormon intellectual thought. May this blessed man rest in peace.

This collection of Eyrings musings on faith are both entertaining and insightful. The book closes the gap between science and faith. After I read it, I purchased a copy for my father and my best friend, neither of whom are LDS -- it has that much universal appeal. Pick up a copy for the intellectual in your life

Sister Gangloff's ability to choose women with a connection to the day from a wide variety of walks of life is an opportunity to allow the reader to expand their hope in life and living as they begin their day.

The reflection questions help you to pause and apply the lessons of the remarkable woman to one's personal life and living.

What a wisdom there is in connecting to others in the present as well as the past who have faced life with grace and courage.

Shortly after Remarkable Women, Remarkable Wisdom was published I was given a copy by a dear friend. I was so impressed with the concept and content that I decided to use it in my classroom. Focusing on a single, outstanding woman each day seemed to be a perfect way to begin all of my classes at an all-girls, senior high school academy. Each day a different student presents our "remarkable woman" to the rest of her class, thus beginning our studies with inspiration for goals we all might strive to achieve. My students have found this opening ritual to be interesting, informative, and, at times, quite surprising. Sister Mary Francis Gangloff writes about these women with compassion and thanksgiving for the gifts they have shared with the world. I applaud her on her own wisdom in bringing their stories to light and sharing them with all of us.

This truly is a remarkable, wonderful book! Sister Mary Frances Gangloff has collected a treasury of women's stories--from Edith Stein and Georgia O'Keefe to Charlotte Brontë and Susan B. Anthony!--weaving together golden nuggets of their wisdom with Scripture and personal reflections... one for every day of the year! Wow. Her impressive and thorough labor of love is a gift and a blessing to her readers. Don't miss out the opportunity to share this beautiful witness of courage and life with your daughters, your mothers, your friends!

Now I jump on the dragon and enjoy the ride. Life will happen, it is up to us to decide whether it happens with us or in spite of us! God bless you all.

As a freshman at Florida State in '91, I worked with the football team as a student athletic trainer. I remember Ben Brown, and how he spent almost every minute with the team, nearly becoming a part of it. Take it from someone who was there: Ben Brown got it right. If you want to know what a season at the top of college football's elite feels like, read this book. Even today, reading passages takes me back to memories I will never forget. I just wish Ben could have been with us in '93, when we won the National Championship, so he could have written a happier ending.

This is the story of the famous saint through whom we received the Miraculous Medal. No sacramental since the Rosary has had such an impact on the Church. The author spent 10 years in research, studying many documents never before available. What he has produced is a definitive life of the Saint which is both highly readable and inspiring. You will come to love St. Catherine Laboure, will see in her a woman of incredible strength and character, of unbelievable constancy, of kindness, humility, obedience and self-effacement. Here was a saint who, from her early years was "entirely mystic," to quote her sister; who from age 12 served 10 years as mistress to her father's large household of 17 (five family members and 12 farm hands), who worked 40 years with constant fidelity running an old man's retirement-nursing home for her order; who after the Miraculous Medal apparitions, would speak to the Blessed Mother at any time she chose and be answered by Our Lady; who was a tower of strength to her order during two revolutions; and who made innumerable prophecies that came true. Full of hidden gems. Enthralling story! Full of terrific photos including some of her incorrupt body. 239pp. PB. Imprimatur.

Even though the Miraculous Medal is probably one of the most popular sacramnetals, up there with the Rosary and the Brown Scapular, most people do not really know the visionary, St. Catherine Laboure. For some strange reason she's not a well-known as St. Bernadette ( Lourdes ) or San Juan Diego ( Guadalupe ), two other saints our Lady has revealed her Immaculate Conception. I bought this book with some reserve because most books I have read about saints have been so overly dramatic that it's almost hard to believe that the saint was also a human being. This book was a surpise, Father Dirvin did such a good job of researching and writing , the book is very interesting. You can see the person of St. Catherine as a true saintly person and also a human being. She was a very hard working person, with her family, later with the Sisters of Charity, and in taking care of the old men. She was a very real person, not given to ecstasies, she even took notice of the Blessed Virgin's outfit when she came to see her and how she looks like. Her Guardian Angel have to remind her that " This is the Blessed Virgin ". This book is really wonderful, fast- paced and great reading. As Rev. Skelly wrote in the foreword " This is a book you will find very hard to lay aside until you have read the final sentence on the last page. "

One of the most outstanding book projects in our time is The Saint John's Bible. The background of how this book came into being and the detailed research that went into the creation of this Bible is fascinating. The text is only superceded by the illustrations.
Should you have an opportunity to see the traveling exhibit of this remarkable book, do so.
The bible is broken into several books. These are scaled down models of the original -- although they are still larger than most books that enable the reader to enjoy the wonderful illustrations and careful handwritten original Bible.
The books have been issued over a course of time and can be purchased individually.

Exquisitely handwritten and illuminated by Donald Jackson, Pentateuch: The Saint John's Bible is as much a work of art as it is a religious text. Commissioned by Saint John's Abbey and University as an expression of the Benedictine monks' daily focus on scripture and devotion to books, art, and religious high culture, Pentateuch presents sacred text in flowing English calligraphy, Hebrew book headings, and colorful marks studding the passages. The care put into each line is breathtaking. In oversized hardcover format, Pentateuch uses the sheer scope of its page to display the columns of perfectly penned scripture in vivid detail.

Rather than one connected novel, this volume of the Saint's adventures contains 7 short stories. As Charteris remarks in the first story, at this point in his career, Templar didn't have to seek adventure - it found him.

"The Effete Angler" (Bimini) - Why would a man who won't even use light tackle for game fishing have a bodyguard?

"The Arrow of God" (Nassau) - Why is a dead journalist found with a beach umbrella through his chest?

"The Black Commmissar" (Jamaica) - Templar meets an old acquaintance, one of the Maroons of Jamaica, on his way to the islands. (Forester's _Admiral Hornblower in the West Indies_ has an adventure in Maroon country, if you're interested.)

"The Unkind Philanthropist" (Puerto Rico) - The lovely Tristan Brown introduces herself as a lawyer for the Kiel foundation, on the lookout for worthy causes to receive funds. Quire, a local 'natural philanthropist', would love to get a chunk of money to disburse as he sees fit. So Templar, being familiar with the Colossal Lie strategy, begins checking bona fides and seeking opportunity, after seeing a man cheated out of his farm by one of the parties involved...

"The Old Treasure Story" (The Virgin Islands) - April Mallory, having inherited a small nest egg and the family legend of a sunken ship, has opted to be the first to *do* something about it.

"The Questing Tycoon" (Haiti) - The tycoon in question doesn't care about religion as such, but only about what he can use. Falsely promising to marry the daughter of a respected houngan to learn the ways of voodoo has certain drawbacks, though...

This is an expanded version of the out-of-print classic from the same author of A MONK OF MOUNT ATHOS (see customer review from Columbus, Georgia). Both St. Silouan and Archimandrite Sophrony are remarkable men who know the Uncreated Light from experience. These are men who can be guides to a world that has lost comprehension of what a real Christian is and what a human being, free of negative emotions and passions of carnality and pride can be. It is an extraordinary portrait. Archimandrite Sophrony is also someone who practiced eastern meditation prior to his re-conversion to Christianity and he knows from experience the danger of confusing the blissful silent expanse of the human soul, with the infinite God. Not to be missed by anyone who wants to know the essence of Orthodox Christianity from a contemporary 20th century witness.

When I first read this book I skipped the first half. Not because it was bad. Rather, it was very sophisticated in it's form. Having recently finished the complete book, I must say this is a must for all Orthodox. St. Silouan as allowed us to see inside of his world and the struggles which he had to endure. He gives us a shinning example on how to, "keep our minds in hell, but not to despair." If you are interested in Eastern Orthodoxy, this would be a great introduction with some help from an EO Priest to explain some of the terms. To read the Saints words and his love for all of Gods creation and how he wept in prayer for the whole world...

It is one thing believing there is a God, and something else knowing there is one! This book explains step by step how using faith and prayer one evokes Devine Grace through which one gets to actually know God, and speak with him face to face. This is the fundamental difference between other faiths and beliefs and Orthodoxy. The living proof provided by people, often meek and illiterate, who have trodden along the narrow path and have been graced to achieve the ultimate. A must for everyone.

Saints Alive is a transcription of classes held by Hilda Charlton in the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in New York City between 1976 and 1987. In this book Hilda speaks of saints, masters and other divine beings that were an important part of her life. These classes were a source of spiritual inspiration and a gift of love by the auther, who shared her experiences, knowledge and accomplishments in an informal manner with hundreds of people that gathered for these weekly meetings. She addressed the public with a conversatoinal style using a language that varied from sublime, to poetic to colloquial. Hilda's message was never preached with superiority or in judgement. Her quest was to be an instrument or channel of God's love and truth. Hilda accomplished what she set out to do leaving an extraordinarty legacy for all humanity to partake of.

Down through the ages, from time to time, souls are born
who are perfect
who are destined to walk among us
who elevate and glorify those whose lives they touch.
Hilda Charlton believed that these "saints" are not elusive myths, but real forces with the power to heal, inform, and change our lives. Saints Alive is an extraordinary collection of Hilda Charlton's teachings on these "perfected beings, who give up their place in heaven to come to earth and help us." For Hilda Charlton, sainthood derived not from conventional religion, but from a spiritual life fully lived. Here are real-life figures who, by their timeless presence in people's lives, continue to perform miracles for us.

In 12 inspirational sessions, she introduces you to her personal saints ... brings them to life ... and guides you into their mysteries. You will meet St. Therese of Lisieux, whose "little way" of accomplishing everyday tasks with deep reverence reverberated throughout the world ... Holy Lady Ammal, a tiny peasant woman from Sri Lanka whose name is still revered for the miracles it brings, and many others. Now, through Hilda Charlton's luminous words and vibration, these miraculous beings can come into your life, too. Comes complete with set of 14 saint cards.

Explore the lives and miracles associated with 12 unique saints, including St. Joan of Arc, Pericles, Jesus, Our Lady of Fatima, Krishnamurti, Sri Nityananda, St. Martin de Porres, Sai Baba, Sri Ramakrishna, St. Colette, George Washington Carver, St. Therese of Lisieux, and Holy Lady Ammal.

She traveled to India as " ... a dancer seeking God" from 1947-50 and then stayed for 15 more years, studying Eastern spiritual traditions and meditation with many great masters, including Sri Nityananda, Sri Mahadevananda, and Sathya Sai Baba. 'This book is a compilation of remarkable classes Hilda gave at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in New York City -- classes in which she spoke with love, wisdom and humor of the saints and holy people who were a living part of her life. The book also includes practical lessons for living a life of truth, courage, and love.'

'When Hilda talked about saints, she began with a gushing enthusiasm I would normally associate with a teenage girl conteplating her latest heartthrob. Almost imperceptibly her tone alternated from one of girlishness to a solemnity manifesting the holiness of the saints' lives to the jocular familiarliy of a next-door neighbor. Only gradually, subtly, and with the utmost concentration did it dawn on me that she herself was one of them.'

In today's society, the word "hero" is used all too frequently. However, in this wonderful book by Ethel Pochocki, you and your children will be introduced to many special individuals to whom the term truly applies. This book contains brief chapters about the lives of many well known saints and some lesser known individuals who may indeed be destined for sainthood.

Each of the book's chapters contains the story of a unique person or group of persons who have used God's grace and guidance to make our world a better place. Pochocki writes in a voice that will be appealing to both children and the adults who share these pages with them. The chapters can be read individually, but the tone is so engaging that you and your child or student may find it difficult to put this book down.

I have many "lives of the saints" books in my home, but this book holds a special place in my library - it offers hope, guidance and heroes to serve as true role models for my children and me.

The only complaint I have about Ethel Pochocki's Saints and Heroes for Kids , is that the title unjustly limits it.
It's straightforward prose and insistence on the everyday nature of goodness and faith, do make it available to children, but adult readers will be utterly moved by its simplicity and sincerity.
Saints, in Ethel Pochocki's treatment are very like the rest of us. They are striving and loving beings who took a few steps more than we have taken.
The treatment of recent heroic acts, such as that of Father Mycal judge, make the moral even more effective.

Review Date: 2005-03-24
Facing the impossible decision of when to stop adding just one more saint or hero ("It's like eating peanuts and potato chips," the author says) Pochocki narrowed the field by choosing saints and heroes that seem especially meaningful to our lives today. The entries are presented chronologically, beginning with Saint Martin of Tours who was born in 316. The list includes individuals from all walks and stations of life. Nearly half of those presented lived in the 20th Century. Among the present-day "heroes" is Father Mychal Judge, who died ministering to firefighters at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. The layout, which includes black and white sketches at the beginning of each chapter, and the vocabulary and style make this an ideal book for children to read or listen to.
