This is a wonderful story and a great book I was able to share with my students. The only drawback with the book is that the pages are not in color, but the extremely low price allowed me to purchase the books for my students out of my own pocket.

Katherine Woods - The name to remember

Katherine Woods' translation is the only English-language version of The Little Prince which captures the beauty, simplicity, clarity, and profundity of the Antoine de St. Exupery's classic, penned in French.

(The newer translation is appallingly horrid and bland, mistaken, and frankly perplexing.)

This is really not a children's book, although older children will appreciate it.

Don't measure the value by the thickness of the book. De St. Exupery, himself a WWI pilot, writes with a great economy yet produces here the most beautiful poetry with a delightful playfulness and childlike innocence -- a fresh vision which thus sees clearly and does not obscure the profound.

Mr. Fred Rogers used to quote from de St. Exupery, whose image and illustrations once graced the 20-franc note (in the days before the euro).

There simply is no other work like this one. It is an exceptionally rare treasure, a masterpiece.

Be sure to read Katherine Woods' translation. Read it privately, when you have time to savor each word. And keep a box of tissues nearby.

The Little Prince has often been heralded as a youthful book, required reading in elementary and high schools alike. In delivering it this way I think The Little Prince is missed by the only audience that is likely to truly appreciate it, that is adults. It is not an uncommon misconception that this is a children's book. Indeed, I keep the pictures stored on my computer, and am often asked where they came from. I reply that they are from one of my favourite books, and without fail the response is along the lines of, 'I don't mean to be rude but is that a children's book?'. 'No', I explain, 'it is not'.

The Little Prince is most needed, I think, by adults. It is easy to be caught up in, as De Saint-Exupery describes it, 'matters of consequence' and forget that it is not these matters which bring meaning to life. By pointing out the futility of professions practised endlessly and in isolation of other people, it becomes clear that the Little Prince, with his rose, is the only character with a life of consequence.

This book is beautifully written and translated by Katherine Woods. It speaks volumes through its simple tale, strange though it seems that matters such as these only become clear when they are somewhat removed from reality. Matters such as love, innocence, imagination and priorities. The Little Prince is a gentle and stirring reminder to never forget to see the boa constrictor from the hat.

Little Prince speaks to the child in me

I was an adult when i read this book, and i really appreciated the lessons in life that Saint-Exupery shares through the Little Prince.

A great book, full of beautiful illustrations, easy to read, while fun and sad at the same time.

I personally read it as if Exupery is sharing with us the conversations he has with his own inner child, in the image of the Little Prince. That is why the Little Prince would ask many questions, but rarely answer the ones he was asked. Like all our inner children he's been hidden inside and kept silent for a long long time, and now that he was given his chance, he will speak. And we better listen, for he is an integral part of our psyche, who will take us through the most unbelievable adventures.

I popped in to a bookstore to buy this book and noticed that it was a new translation. New translation? Fortunately I had the foresight to thumb through it. I promptly left it behind and went straight to a second hand bookstore to buy a copy of the original translation. How could the publisher eliminate the wonderful poetic language? I read The Little Prince as a child ( which by the way wasn't so long ago) and I loved the language. Antoine De Saint-Exupery's work is all about painting pictures through language. This watered down mess is no better than an edition of Cliff Notes. I actually apologize to Cliff Notes. At least with Cliff Notes would have explained the intention and nature of the language. I am sorry to see that this publisher allowed the dumbing down of this beautiful classic.

This book was fantastic. I was hooked in the first chapter. Different sects like the FLDS always fascinate me. On the back of the book one reviewer wrote that sometimes "fact is stranger than fiction" and I've never seen it be more true than in this book. Great book for a feminist studies class to read. I rarely buy books because I'd rather save my money and check a book out from the library but this one was totally worth the money!

I wanted to read about the subject of polygamy, a timely subject in view of recent events, a subject about which I know nothing at all. I saw the authoress on Larry King and decided to order the book. The story is horrific. Unfortunately, the style of writing is - in my opinion - simplistic and dull. I gave up and started skipping further along after I just couldn't take any more of which wife said what to which other wife. I do certainly appreciate the fact that Jessop has had the courage to bring this abuse to light, and I hope that all the ignorant and shocking practises in this sect will be abolished as soon as possible. I just wish the book had been better written.

I couldn't put this book down and finished it in two days. After the recent events in Texas, I became interested in what the FDLS was all about. I read Carolyn Jessop's book and highly recommend. After reading this book, my heart really goes out to Carolyn and my admiration for this woman is beyond words. I just finished the last chapter and I can't even imagine what she has gone through to come this far. I feel as if I know her as she bared her many struggles in this memoir. I wish the best to her and her children and hope they find true happiness ahead.

Saint's narrative of how an invisible man survives in an urban setting is very credible because of the amount of details provided. Nick is forced to become a true survivalist because government agents are after him with the intent of making him a laboratory curiosity.
One reviewer commented that Nick appeared rather wimpy in his response to Colonel Jenkins' persecution (that is the best word for it) and this is the only aspect of the book that put me off slightly. If I'd been in Nick's place, Jenkins' life would have been much, much harder.

What would life really be like for an invisible man ?,

Edgy, nail-biting, darkly humorous, sexy, paranoid, and brilliant speculation about what life might be like for a man who is accidentally turned invisible.

This is light-years better than any of the many other recent attempts to build stories on this theme, from books and TV to films, and sadly including the disappointing Chevy Chase comedy which was actually inspired by this book.

The narrator and central character is Nick Halliwell, a 34-year old, single, securities analyst working for a New York firm, who is completely ordinary except perhaps for an overactive sex drive. As part of his campaign to seduce a beautiful New York Times journalist called Anne Epstein, Nick invites her to a demonstration by a company called MicroMagnetics of their new type of magnetic fields.

Unfortunately Anne has cartoonishly stereotypical left-wing/liberal views. She decides that the magnetic fields must be intended for nuclear fusion containment, and tips off a buch of lunatics called "Students for a Fair society" about the event. These idiots decide to stage the other sort of demonstration, which includes cutting off power to the building.

As Nick puts it later, he should have paid more attention to what the students were about to do and what effect this might have on the process which the head of the company describes.

"I knew that someone was about to shut off power to the building ... And this man was telling me that he had some loopy subatomic process roaring away, which sustained itself but whose control system used outside power. It is important to listen to exactly what people are saying ..."

Shortly afterwards Nick is in the toilet when the building is evacuated as someone realises what the students are about to do: perversely ignoring a security guard who asks if anyone is there, he remains in the building and consequently is still inside when the control system has its power cut off, and the equipment blows up, turning everything else inside the building invisible.

Nick is knocked out by the effect. He comes to his senses a few hours later, and realises that he has been turned invisible, by which time government investigators are looking at the building. He calls out to the nearest investigator, expecting them to offer help, and is astonished when the man speaks into his radio and even as he promises medical help, Nick can see that an ambulance and some paramedics are being told to leave. Then the investigators come towards the building with a net. Nick realises that they see him more as an invaluable asset than as another human being, and falling into their hands might be a very bad idea ...

The main plot of the story is about the determined efforts which the investigators, led by the horrible Colonel Jenkins, make to capture Nick, and Nick's equally determined attempts to stay out of their custody. The sub-plot is that invisibility does not affect Nick's considerable libido, and he misses female companionship more than anything else about his situation. And as if it were not difficult enough for an invisible man to find love, any attempt Nick makes to do so is almost certain to offer new opportunities for Colonel Jenkins to catch him.

The dramatic tension in the book is sometimes unbearably strong, and there are some very exciting action sequences: there are also some moments of extreme pathos and some hysterically funny or embarrassing scenes.

Contains a lot of speculation, much of it highly plausible, about how other human beings might react to an invisible person. He is still solid, still needs food, water, sleep & shelter, and has to open doors to pass through them, so he cannot avoid leaving evidence that a person is around. Some people confronted with evidence of Nick's presence assume he's a ghost, or that a burglar has been and gone, but other people who become aware of him react in much more dangerous ways.

"Memoirs of an invisible man" is one of the best novels I have ever read. As I prepare to post this I see that the number of Amazon.com reader reviews is now up to 64 and 62 including mine are five-stars, which must be almost unprecedented. But the book really is that good.

Note: I made some immature Mormon angry because of my negative reviews of books out to prove the Book of Mormon, and that person has been slamming my reviews almost as fast as they are posted.

So your "helpful" vote is greatly appreciated. Thanks, and note that a
short review can be a good review if it prompts a person to read a good novel.

This was one of the most enjoyable stories I ever read. Set in modern times, there is an accident at a research facility, and one man becomes invisible.

The adventure starts there. It's too bad this author never wrote any other books, but this novel is a classic and a fun read. The man even finds a woman to love him.

The many dangers of being invisible were fascinating--like being accidentally hit by people or cars. And, of course, the government wouldn't let him live his life. They wanted to use him (make him a prisoner). He was too valuable. A great fantasy about a man being tracked down by the government.

I don't want to say too much and ruin the story, so just go it. Fantastic.

Also, don't miss the original "Invisible Man," by H.G. Wells.

Not one of the worst books I've ever read but pretty close. Sorry I bought it and am not passing it on to friends. Perhaps it was the subject matter that first intrigued and in the end alienated me but I had to force myself to finish because I couldn't believe the plot. I kept hoping for some relevant message. Mary Magdalene, the original feminist and Mary the Mother of God, the worn out, bitter, stay at home Mom? I won't even try to describe her take on Jesus. Not my cup of nectar. I'll certainly make every effort to keep this book a "secret".

I can't count the times I cried reading this book. Or the times I laughed. Or the times I wondered at how the author made such perfect sense of all the stories, interpretations, arguments, historical events, warring religious factions, as well as getting under the skin of each and every rich and delicious character. My understanding of what might very well be a true "Truth" as I read got clearer and clearer and if I wasn't crying or laughing, I was going aha! yes! could be! why not? never thought of it that way! wow!

The theology is brilliant. The philosophy is brilliant. But it's also a brilliant read. This is a historical novel so it has all that those who read historical novels could want: an Alexandria, Egypt when the Great Library still beckoned, the Holy Land when the temple was the center of Jewish belief, Rome when Tiberius was emperor. It has adventures and quests and love and despair and thrill and danger and derring-do and, best of all, Meaning. The story means something that will stay with you long long after you close the book.

I've read a few reviews that loved the book but said they had a little trouble at first with the style of writing. But that's perfect too. It's like reading Gone With the Wind, the King James version. It's literature on a high level but in no way does this mean "difficult." It means this is a real writer telling a real story that needs to be told.

Though the cover states "What the DaVinci Code only hinted at, this brings to life" is only partially true. Yes, it shows Mary Magdalene as Jesus's companion and intellectual peer, but no, it doesn't reveal any more of their relationship. In fact, it shrouds in diffucult prose what their relationship was, how they spent their time together (other than walking everywhere silently), and how they collectively orchestrated Jesus's resurrection to fulfill prophesy and give the people the Messiah they so desperately needed and sought. Through Mary's voice, it turns the miracles, the parables, and the events described in the Bible as basically misunderstood by the disciples, and therefore calls into question their historical and spiritual validity. This viewpoint, though creative and well-composed, made it all too convenient for me. I'm no Biblical scholar, but I do know some of the pivotal points in the Gospels, and what's more miraculous to me is how Mary Magdalene, whether clothed as herself or as John the Less, is at every one of them and has an explanation as to how they each came to be that's at odds with what's recorded in the gospels. I would agree with an earlier reviewer who found the ending a disappointment. I won't go into it, in case there's a reader out there who doesn't want me to give it away, but be prepared - it will let you down. DaVinci code went further than this, without going into all the details of Mary's (Miriamne's) life. Read it for the interesting perspective, but don't read it for salacious and informed details regarding Mary's and Jesus's relationship.

Although well written, this book takes all the writings of the New Testament regarding Jesus the Christ and his followers as not only ordinary, but, provides a story line that discredits any miraculous happenings, including the resurrection of Jesus. The book provides information on the times and geographical areas mentioned in the New Testament and develops the personalities of various followers of Jesus in ways that are most interesting. However, I would caution anyone planning on reading this book to know that all miraculous events will be given a non-miraculous context.

This fast-pased novel captured and held my interest, being different from anything that I read before. This is the first in the City of God series and has such interesting plot devices as time-traveling Israeli physicst, and a American-born Messianic Jewish archeologist trying to prevent the murder of the Apostle Paul in 57 A.D. (CE) Jerusalem, and a prostitute with a heart of gold. Mr. Ingermanson won a Christy Award for this book for good reason, It's fantastic. While the book is currently out of print, used copies can be found, and are worth the search. You will want to get the other two books in this series, "Premonition" and "Retribution."

Finally, a great Christian novel

Review Date: 2005-06-24
I particularly like Ingermanson's approach to the novel because he wraps up so many things that I'm directly interested in: Messianic Jewish faith, physics, time travel and Jerusalem.

I found the very proper, concise dialog difficult to read through at first, but upon sticking with it I became comfortable with it and felt that it was very appropriate, considering the time frame and the fact that we just don't know how people of that time spoke to one another. Ingermanson is very consistent with his dialog and doesn't wander into colloquialisms or slang, unless it is on the part of the 21st century protagonists. I'm sure he had to be extremely careful when writing the dialog as he could easily slip. I appreciate the care he took here.

I also appreciate Ingermanson's knowledge of Jewish history, especially with regard to Josephus and Roman archives.

The story is well-written, the characters endearing and full-bodied. You'll find yourself rooting for Ari and Rivka.

Another interesting element is that Ingermanson isn't afraid to introduce elements that some Christians might be fearful to bring into fiction. While he doesn't talk directly about sex, he implies that it definitely did go on during that period. Characters are close to one another and you can tell that all of the things we go through as humans today they were going through. Ingermanson touches on such difficult to broach subjects as adultery, incest and abortion.

Ingermanson does a good job with the evil antagonist as well. There is plenty of tension. You feel really badly for Ari, for example, when the antagonist sets him up for failure and Ari is essentially black-balled from the community for a time.

I don't really have anything negative to say about the book. Why only 4 stars as opposed to 5? I guess I would say that maybe Ingermanson tries to wrap a little too much into the book. For example, perhaps the part about meeting the apostle Paul (Saul in the book) could've been left out with the book still being provocative. But it's a slight thing and I don't fault Ingermanson for leaving it in either.

Christians who are tired of namby-pamby fiction that doesn't go anywhere or do anything and has the same oft-repeated ideas as previous works will enjoy Ingermanson's work. It is refreshing and a treat.

Good work Randy!

I really enjoy reading historical fiction. When I discovered Transgression, the first book in the series, I couldn't put it down. It was full of energy, suspense, and action. So I eagerly looked forward to reading Premonition. When it finally arrived, I eagerly started reading about the ongoing adventures of Rivka and Ari. While I found the book hard to put down, I didn't think it was quite as good as Transgression. Don't get me wrong - it is a good book to read, but didn't seem to have the same level of energy and suspense.

I bought this and another book about polygamy (Escape by Carolyn Jessop), because of the current situation in El Dorado, Texas, and I hoped to gain some insight from those who have been on the inside.

I couldn't put this book down as I found Susan's story riveting, amazing, unbelievable, interesting, tragic, inspiring, thought provoking, soul searching, and more. It is a very moving story.

I think having some hint of an idea of what goes on "inside" some of these groups helps those of us on the "outside" to be better equipped to understand some of the actions being taken, and pause to give real thought to what is the "right" or "best" thing to do. There are no easy answers or solutions, for sure. Nobody wants to see children taken away from loving mothers, but at the same time, we want to protect woman and children who may not be in the position to protect themselves, particularly when it comes to physical and sexual abuse of children. There are certainly many complex issues in all of this, but I think it is at least time to keep the spot light on until there are thorough investigations.

In any case, I'm so happy that Susan wrote this book. Her story is incredible, and I highly recommend it to anybody who is interested at all in learning more about polygamy. While I thought Jessop's book, Escape, was also very interesting, and more closely related to the group in Texas in time and space~ I definitely found His Favorite Wife to be a much more interesting story and the style more readable for me, too.

I have a feeling I'll be reading a few more books on this subject... after learning Irene has written Shattered Dreams. It goes beyond morbid curiousity, because there are so many real life and spiritual issues that come to light in these books that apply to some degree to all of us.

I'm not in any book clubs, but I would absolutely recommend this book to those of you who are. It would provide a foundation for many interesting discussions~

And I want to know how they ever got all of Verlan's daughters together for a cruise!

A Powerful Story.

Susan has written a powerful book. Though not a professional writer, she indeed must have "innate" writing talent to so skillfully tell the story and describe in such an understandable way some of her most sublime feelings. As others have noted, this story has it all. Personal crisis, despair, doubt, strength, adventure, danger, murder, power struggles within the church--really, it's all there. Making the story all the more intriguing is that it is true. She tells her personal story as at age 15 she becomes the 6th (plural) wife of one of the church leaders. Enduring the worst third world poverty at times, yearning for a true marriage, remaining steadfast through extraordinarily difficult circumstances, and finally overcoming the notion that women could not and should not think through their situation themselves are some of her challenges. At one point a power struggle within the church leads to murder and attempted murder of people she knows well. It is a saga of courage, strength, steadfastness, and finally the victory of reason over blind obedience. Her message has appeal for everyone. Another reviewer has said it should be made into a movie, and indeed it would be a fascinating story to see portrayed on the screen. Buy the book, you will not be able to put it down.

This was a good book, but Susan didn't share as much of the emotional side of polygamy as I had hoped. For a better read on the subject, read Shattered Dreams by Irene Spencer. It's definitely worth your money.

An Unbelievable True Story!

This is an absorbing and fascinating book based on the author's life as she lived it. You do not want to miss this true story! I could not put it down! I was left wanting more and more information about the author's life, her children and the legacy of FLDS cult that dominated her life and so many others. It was easy to read, written in an unaffected manner, sometimes humorous sometimes devastating in its truth. I was drawn into the story and felt like I knew Susan and all those around her. This is a great story that will have you thinking about the true impact of FLDS and the Mormom church especially as current events uncover crimes within the fundamentalist church.

I've been reading a lot about polygamy as all these cases in the media unfold... Under the Banner and Shattered Dreams by Irene Spencer. She was the 2nd wife and Susan was the 5th. The stories are different because, even though they all had children by the same man, they had different living arrangements and marriages. Both are really good books. It makes a great memoir... fascinating.

I LOVE Jan Brett's books! I buy them anytime I see them whether on sale, old ones on Amazon as remainders, or new.. They make great gifts. I have a backup of many to give to children, particularly my granddaughters. The illustrations in this one are so beautiful it is really a keepsake to save as well as enjoy. Give it as a gift and you will make some child very happy and a parent happy, too.

Beautiful illustrations reprinted from over 40 sources. All illustrations are credited on last page. Book measures 9"X11.5" Only down side was that the price changes by the day. One day it's almost $11 another it's $8.97. But that's just the way Amazon works; something to be aware of. (It's worked in my favor often while shopping at midnight--price suddenly went down!)

Good, Easy Reading

This book is enticing, exciting and sad, all on one page. Usually when a book is a sequel, it is necessary to have read the first book in order to fully enjoy it. That's not the case with this novel. The author has succeeded in giving you just enough insight to the previous book that you don't feel lost if you haven't read it, without reiterating everything in case you have. Bernice McFadden is quickly becoming one of my favorite novelists

Wow, What a book and I was thinking sugar was good, they are both good reads.Sugar comes back to bigelow for a reason, and now we know why.Jude send her back in her dreams to let her know what happen to her, and bring the family together with the true who sugar dad is.I see why mercy was put in her life the way she was to see that lappy have done to alot of people in that town. This was a great book IM sorry it taking so long to read it.

The group felt many of the unanswered questions from McFadden's novel "Sugar" were answered in "This Bitter Earth."

Overall the group felt that each character kept too many secrets. Everyone felt that the secrets were the source of the problems. Joe kept secrets about being Sugar's father and learning the details of Jude's murder. The Lacey sisters held secrets about Sugar's family including Shirley being her great-grandmother. Sugar's life would have been drastically different, if most of these secrets had been revealed earlier.

YES, A SEQUEL THAT CAN STAND UP TO THE FIRST BOOK. THIS BITTER EARTH WAS JUST AS GOOD AS SUGAR. SHE MADE SURE SHE KEPT US IN THE BOOK AND IN THE MIND OF ALL THE CHARACTERS. MANY OF TIMES I HAD TO SAY "COCOA, YOU ARE NOT SUGAR, COME BACK TO REALITY" I FELT THAT CHARACTER LIKE I FEEL THE MY HEART BEATING INSIDE OF ME. ONCE AGAIN A WELL WRITTEN NOVEL BY BERNICE MCFADDEN

I haven't actually read this myself yet but it was recommended by a good friend who has never steered me wrong and in fact and always pointed me to really, really good religious and philosophical books. Hahn is also a writter who is very familiar to me and I have liked all his other books I have read although I find them not to always be and easy read.

Makes the crucifixion and the Eucharist make sense

Dr. Hahn has a genius for making complicated concepts easy to understand. He leads us through the Old Testament and shows us how the old covenant leads up to and culminates in the Last Supper and crucifixion; and the new covenant begins with the resurrection and is perpetuated through the Eucharist. I have a much better understanding of the crucifixion and the Eucharist now that Hahn has put it into the context of Jewish history. My only complaint is Hahn's casual -- sometimes chatty -- writing style and occasional paraphrasing of biblical exchanges into modern American vernacular. While I understand that this book was written for a broad audience, I was still mildly irritated; that said, Hahn's brilliant insight makes this quip hardly worth mentioning.

I have found this book to be a superb talk on theology from the Catholic point of view. I use this book as a guide to look over Mr. Hahn's course at his web site. I plan to follow up his other books in the future. To be honest, this is a biased view since I like the cut of Mr Hahn's jib on spiritual matters. He uses his opinion, the religious view, and quotes others to get a balanced view.

Highly recommend!

Ordered this book to conduct a Bible Study class along with the VCR tape and online classes. I will be reading ALL his books and recommending that our study group conduct classes on each of them.
This book is for anyone serious about really understanding the Old Testament and God's plan for us.

This book is just superb! And I mean- SUPERB!!!!!!!!!Poetic, funny, acerbic- and so full of wisdom. I like his style- so irreverent and so deep at the same time. I will reread it often and will give it around.
I strongly recommend it- you got the point, right?
I met Eryk Hanut once- many years ago. I attended an opening for his artwork in Virginia Beach. I was with a friend (who was already sick and has died since)who admired and praised one of Mr. Hanut's Art pieces . She told him so and joked that she couldn't afford it; He left us and came back with the framed photograph that he had just took off the wall- and gave it to my friend. That's the kind of man he is.
Long live authors of his talent and originality!
